My 18 month old STILL has cradle cap, is this normal? Will it ever go?

Dentinox never did do the trick!
I removed a bit that was flaking off tonight and a bit of her hair fell out! I'm worried now that she'll lose more hair. Any one got any tips/ can reassure me that it will be OK?

My 4yo still has cradle cap. It gets better with time albeit extremely slowly. Her hair covers it though.

My almost 4 year old still has it too. My friends son is 6 and still has a little bit. I don't know at what age it is definite to go.

DD had it until she was 4.

One thing that work was to plaster her head with vaseline, leave it overnight, and it all lifted off in the morning. Dreadfully messy on the pillows though!

It does go eventually.

DD1 is 2.5, we just got rid of the last of her cradle cap as she has had head lice and the nit comb removed all the cradle cap too. Am now considering nit combing DD2's hair to clear her cradle cap too.

If you really want it gone you'll have to bite the bullet. Olive oil, left on for a bit and then combing out. It's not a nice job and won't be welcomed by DC, but once you've got rid of it that's it. You can leave it and one day it might go, I'm sure it does no harm, but with fine hair it is very visible so best to remove for us.

My nearly 5yo ds still gets it too if I don't keep on top of it. If it builds up I use Dentinox at bathtime every day and some gentle brushing, as far as he will tolerate it. A few hairs come out but nothing catastrophic. I use a firm hairbrush or nailbrush with small circular movements while the shampoo is still in, then brush it out while rinsing. That seems to get rid of it over the course of a few days. Then I just have to make sure I use Dentinox once a week/fortnight, seems to keep it at bay.

i disovered my boy had it when he was around this age - it had built up and i hadn't noticed cause his hair was so thick. i did olive oil for a few hours then regular hair washing with normal baby shampoo and i also use kids conditioner and rub it inot his scalp. i've heard you can use head and shoulders.

Thanks everyone for getting back to me. Her hair is fine and it is visible so it would be nice to clear it up. I was a bit shocked when some hair came out tonight though, maybe I should leave well alone...

A nit comb gets rid of it, combing lots and lots of scales out of my ds2's hair is probably one of my most boaksome moments, although it did become satisfying after awhile, still .

You need olive oil or vaseline to soften the flaky bits and then the hair won't come out. Washing out vaseline would be harder I imagine than olive oil.

Oilatum scalp treatment shampoo worked on my ds (3). it's pricey but you don't have to use it every time you wash their hair. You shampoo it in, leave it for about 5 minutes and then rinse. I comb when wet and the cradle cap just lifts off Have tried olive oil, dentinox etc but nothing works as well as this. A lot of the cradle cap just washed away!

Well it may remove hair, but the hair will not be attached to the scalp. Lets face it you will be nit combing for years to come, it's inevitable.

I did the nit combing at about 8 months and the amount of skin/scales was honestly boaksome(ds2). My dd had cradle cap until she was quite old too, I didn't do anything about it tbh, I haven't noticed any bald spots.

Have you tried Epiderm? It was the only thing that cleared dd's cradle cap. Ask for it at the chemist.

The cradle cap came back a while later and after a search on MN I discovered that it was probably the Johnson's baby shampoo which was causing it. We changed shampoo and the cradle cap stopped.

Definitely recommend Edpiderm.

I was also going to say Epiderm - we had it for DD's excema and I slapped it on Ds's head and left it on. A bit of time and combing had it all shifted. Stupidly I didn't keep on top of it and it's come back. I don't have the Epiderm anymore - I wasn't aware it could be bought over the counter.

I've had to start nitcombing hte DC's hair as DS1 is at school. When I did DD's hair (she's 2) all the cradle cap came out. SHe completely clear now

I agree with Yama and sneaker. Epaderm cleared my ds's. Also, wouldn't it be worth a trip to the GP if you're worried about the hair falling out? They sometimes prescribe a special shampoo (not Dentinox) to deal with the fungus which is associated with cradle cap. About olive oil: I was told it can actually make it worse because it hardens, so although it can remove the cradle cap it can make the skin underneath sore...

Thanks so much everyone, it's reassuring to know it's not just my lo! I think I will take her to the GP so they can have a look at it. I might try the Epiderm first/ nit comb though. Thank you!

Bio-oiil has just taken off my little one's cradle crap (!). Managed it in about 2 appliations overnight!

It's truly the holy grail, that stuff. Sorted out my dry, just about to crack heels....

DS still gets patches in his very fine hair and he is 12 (guess it might be calkled something different by that age). I just slather it in conditioner and comb out with a nit comb!

We have our winner! Bottom butter has done the trick. Slapped it on last night. Washed his hair with dentinox this morning, combed through. All gone!

Hello ladies! Just to update, bio-oil and a gentle combing with the nit comb in front of Pepper pig has done the trick, and now it is all gone! Yay! Thank you all so much for your help! :)

Got rid of DS' craddle cap the first (and only) time he had nits as well. Used the oil-based product and combed it out (hedrin, if anyone wants to kknow, and it worked very well) and all the cradle crap came out! Then the cradle cap built up again, so this time I used just normal olive oil, rubbed it in really well, and after about 20 minutes I used the nit comb to remove it all whilst watching a movie. It all came out no problem. If you try to take out the cradle cap without oil first the hair might pull out.
