My second thread. The first is awaiting deletion due to details that were in the thread.

Basically, my brother is in intensive care with multiple stab wounds, he is stable, but critical. So he could go either way.

At the moment it doesn't feel real to me, I feel like I'm in a soap or something! It's very surreal sad

HazeltheMcWitch Mon 31-Dec-12 20:05:51

Not seen first thread, but here is a hand.

HazeltheMcWitch Mon 31-Dec-12 20:06:22

Have you got anyone with you?

FiaGrace Mon 31-Dec-12 20:09:38

Didn't see original thread but so sorry you're going through what sounds like a nightmare. I hope you've got friends and family around to offer support?

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt Mon 31-Dec-12 20:14:27

Yes I'm at home with DP. My mum is at the hospital with him now, he's just had a tracheostomy to help him breathe a bit better and to hopefully help him to get off the ventilator quicker.

Santasapunkatheart Mon 31-Dec-12 20:17:37

I have to go soon but I will check in to see if all is well when I can. Do you want to talk about it - or is it too sensitive? Sounds bloody harrowing. Thank God he survived. It sounds as if someone meant to kill him.

OnlyWantsOne Mon 31-Dec-12 20:20:20

Poor boy and poor you

Hope he makes a super quick recovery poppet xx

CatPussRoastingOnAnOpenFire Mon 31-Dec-12 20:24:42

CHRIST! That is awful! Fingers crossed and hand held for a fast recovery!

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt Mon 31-Dec-12 20:24:59

Santa someone did try to kill him sad I can't go into details because of the police involvement. His injuries are horrrific.

I don't mind talking about it, it helps it seem more real, if that makes sense?

OnlyWantsOne Mon 31-Dec-12 20:31:07

Have a cup of tea and cuddle your DH. seriously be kind to yourself.

Would it be a good idea to take some bits to your mum to ease her comfort, change of clothes?

I hope the scum that did this are now in custody.

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt Mon 31-Dec-12 20:44:07

My mum is being taken care of, various family members have been back and forth all day with bits and pieces for her.

I'm not sure how much I can talk about. It's in local news with names and everything so it's hard to say what I can and can't tell you. It would help if we'd been told exactly what we can and can't say.

peaceandlovebunny Mon 31-Dec-12 20:45:49

canutesauntie Mon 31-Dec-12 20:52:40

Hand squeezing from me too.
Hold onto the fact that intensive care is a marvellous place, the staff and the things that they can do are brilliant, they made me feel safe even when critically ill, they will make your brother feel safe too.
Hope you are coping & thinking of you.

OMG awful. Praying for him too x

Thank you Canute, the ICU where he is is excellent, so I keep being told by various people. He has his own nurse and both times I've seen him there is someone sat watching him.

Awful isn't it Horse? I'm just thankful the news doesn't have all the details of his injuries.

Thank you everybody, it feels better to talk to a bunch of random strangers smile my mum said I can talk to her about it but I don't want to worry her, with mumsnet there's always someone around to chat to, my mum has to sleep sometime!

I'm still waiting to hear how his tracheostomy went! It was supposed to be over at 8pm, I texted my mum at half 8, no news yet, my sister (who is there with mum) said she'd let me know when they knew.

Hope you have some better news soon x

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt Tue 01-Jan-13 22:38:37

I found out a bit earlier that last night one of the nurses was brushing his teeth and his eyes opened, so she asked him if he knew where he was and he shook his head, she asked him if he hurt anywhere and he shook his head, she asked him if his throat was sore and he nodded, she explained he was in hospital in intensive care and his face went all confused and then he fell back to sleep.

I've just been copying and pasting lovely comments off his FB onto word and emailed it to my sister, she's going to make a scrap book for him for when he wakes up and is able to look at it properly.

FiaGrace Tue 01-Jan-13 22:40:57

At least he isn't in pain as such + the scrap book idea is great. I hope he has a settled night.

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt Tue 01-Jan-13 22:50:16

I hope he does too, he's been fiddled with quite a lot this evening and apparently he didn't like being moved. They have to move him every 4 hours to help dislodge all the fluid and blood on his chest, and also most of his wounds are on his back so they need to be checked and redressed etc, he doesn't like being moved bless him. I'm happy with the care he is recieving though, the nurses who are looking after him are fantastic.

StillSlightlyCrumpled Tue 01-Jan-13 22:51:01

What a good idea with the FB posts.
How are you doing? It sounds absolutely horrific, your poor brother. Hope tomorrow brings some positive news.

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt Tue 01-Jan-13 23:14:03

I'm doing fine thanks, I still don't feel like it's real. I feel kind of guilty because I don't seem to be able to show any emotion for it whatsoever, yet when my brothers family visited today and they came back into the waiting room from seeing him they were in tears. I am upset, of course I am, he's my brother fgs. I'm just confused as to why I can't seem to feel anything. Does that make sense? Probably not, it doesn't to me!

HintofBream Tue 01-Jan-13 23:50:45

I guess the reason you are showing no emotion and are feeling it is not real is that you are in shock, and it is your body and mind's way of protecting you in this awful situation. I am sure every single person who has read this thread will be thinking of you and your brother and wishing you well and hoping for good news tomorrow.

xxDebstarxx Wed 02-Jan-13 08:56:14

I hope your brother had a good night. In a weird way I feel that the fact he is making it clear he doesn't like being moved is a positive sign.

As for not showing emotion you are probably in autopilot and dealing with the here and now. Someone has to be strong and I guess that's you. I imagine that when your brother is fully on the mend you will look back at these few days and have a good cry.

Sunnywithshowers Wed 02-Jan-13 14:00:09

Hello lovely

I hope your brother continues to improve.

Don't worry about the emotions - when my DB broke his neck (since sorted phew) I didn't cry until he was out of hospital.

Santasapunkatheart Wed 02-Jan-13 16:50:06

It might be useful to get some counselling for you and your family.

I am also thinking of your brother and hoping that he is strong and able to come through all this well.

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt Wed 02-Jan-13 21:18:17

My mum has texted me an update -

DB got infection somewhere coz his temp high. He had CT scan earlier which didn't show much. Will be several hours till results.

He not on any sedation now just morphine and he staying asleep okay.

He just had really good cough and responded himself as his face went red and his head lifted slightly.
The nurse also cleaned his mouth out and he tried to suck on the tube a bit. Mostly reflex actions but good sign.

lunar1 Wed 02-Jan-13 22:06:29

I hope you get some more concrete news soon, still thinking of you and your family.

WholeLottaRosie Thu 03-Jan-13 14:57:38

Be kind to yourself, it does sound like you are in shock. When I've been in stressful situations I've been fine at the time, it's further down the line when it kicks in properly.

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt Thu 03-Jan-13 16:40:34

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt Fri 04-Jan-13 01:06:03

I'm going to C&P the message I've been updating various people with (names removed). Back home now, Doc said no point in staying. Got a phonecall from my sister in tears at about 7pm saying that DB was on 100% oxygen and they can't do anything more for him. He can only fix it himself now. His right lung is very badly damaged and isn't able to heal because of the oxygen being forced into him so his left lung is doing all the work. He's now on 85% oxygen, and there's still every chance he could die. It's all up to him now sad we need a miracle to get him through this.

Evian his mum and 2 sisters aren't really anything compared to how much close family he has wanting to take care of hi. Put it this way, the ICU waiting room has 15 chairs, 12 of them tonight were taken up by DBs family and that was nowhere near even half of close family members!

Only just seen this thread. Thinking of you all. Hoping for a miracle for you.

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt Mon 07-Jan-13 12:36:32

What a bloody day so far! Got summoned to hospital at 3am because his good lung is giving up, so we're just sitting around waiting for him to die. Then a doctor came and suggested this procedure to put oxygen straight into his blood to help his lungs heal. Great! Yes? Only problem is, he has to go to manchester. 2 hours away. So now we're waiting to hear from the Dr about what exactly will happen and how long he'll be there etc. So we're all clutching onto this one straw.

Just seen this. What an awful time for you. Thinking of you and praying for a miracle. I hope they can move your brother and the procedure works for him.

StillSlightlyCrumpled Mon 07-Jan-13 12:53:57

Emotional rollercoaster! Has he arrived yet? Fingers all crossed that this is the miracle.

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt Mon 07-Jan-13 19:43:46

Not yet, he left the hospital here at 6, and the ambulance took exactly 2 hours to get here with equipment/team etc, so assuming they've kept that pace up he should be there in roughly 20 mins. He's still critically ill, but things are looking so much better already. His oxygen levels in his blood were up to 100% straight after the procedure which is fantastic considering before the op it was less than 50% and he had less than 24 hours to live.

Horsemad Mon 07-Jan-13 19:59:14

I know lots of paramedics & medical staff from our area OP & I know they'll be doing their utmost to give him the best chance.

They really are amazing people.

Going to be a very long night and we'll be stiff tomorrow, we're staying in the waiting room for the night. Don't know how he is yet though, will update when I've seen him.

The nurses managed to find us accomodation in the hospital itself so at least we have beds for the night which was an unexpected but welcome surprise. Although we're in the transplant department, quite a way away from where we need to be.

Fantastic news. And how wonderful that you were given beds - presume just hospital beds?

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt Tue 08-Jan-13 10:33:03

No Love it's proper accomodation, £10 a night (first night free), just a poky little bedsit, kind of like a flat, 6 bedrooms with en suites and a communal kitchenette and dining area. The bedrooms have a single bed and a mattress on the floor. Very uncomfortable but a lot better than the waiting room chairs we were first planning on!

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt Tue 08-Jan-13 10:35:15

Oh and yes Bogey, his step brother has been arrested and charged, he's been reprimanded and the trial starts in March. No-one knows why yet though.

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt Tue 08-Jan-13 10:40:32

I still can't believe this, he'd be dead by now if it weren't for this ECMO thing. Aslong as I live I will never forget the moment I woke my mum and told her he'd come through his surgery. The look of sheer disbelief and then relief on her face was just amazing. She just burst into tears, none of thought he'd make it through the first step which was being moved!

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt Wed 09-Jan-13 14:07:01

The ECMO is doing its job well, his heart rate is now at 60, his blood pressure is normal and the infection is going. He is still critical but his chances of recovery are looking much better smile

If anyone is interested, this is ECMO. I read online that the average cost for 1 person to recieve the ECMO treatment is 45,000, and the average time is 8 days. They think my brother will be on it around a month or so. I dread to think how much a month would cost! shock

Horsemad Wed 09-Jan-13 14:16:55

Brilliant news Cunny!

Thank God for the NHS, I know they get a lot of slagging off, but they are there for lots of people.

I will update until he's home and fully recovered (physically anyway, I imagine the psychological side of it will take a while sad), I like doing it, it's a bit like keeping a diary of what's happened.

SecretNutellaFix Wed 09-Jan-13 17:37:55

Every small improvement is a welcome one. Plus it's better for him if his sleep is a natural one, rather than drug induced.

I keep checking in on you.

EvianBaby Wed 09-Jan-13 20:08:38

Great news!! He's got a lot of people who love him to keep fighting for. Try and look after yourself too. Having a chid who's frequently in hospital I know how hard that is, but you should at least eat and drink regularly. I'll keep everything crossed for more good news. Take care xx

Also, not sure if I mentioned before, he's on kidney dialysis too to give his kidneys a break because they got tired and packed up (according to them it's normal).

How Is he today?

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersWife Tue 15-Jan-13 19:11:07

Todays update! They have reduced his sedation now because it's good for his physiological awareness so he is now listening and responding too by flickering his eyes moving his head and hand. He has squeezed my mums fingers a few times and pulled a few faces too! He's not as puffy (his face was really really puffy) no longer on kidney machine, the drains out, heart rate and oxygen good. He's doing well. Also would you be able to get rat out again tomorrow? Also need some more if u couldd poss go to trimpets? X

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersWife Tue 15-Jan-13 19:14:40

ripsishere Wed 16-Jan-13 00:17:39

Fabulous news funny. Not so sure about getting rats out of trumpets. It sounds like an especial warped magician.
I know it isn't much of a consideration, but, presumably he has a urinary catheter. I would check that they are clamping and releasing. I had one in for about a month. I am still vaguely incontinent.

mistlethrush Wed 16-Jan-13 09:21:04

Sunnywithshowers Wed 16-Jan-13 10:28:49

BitBewildered Wed 16-Jan-13 23:06:25

Excellent news Cunny! It sounds like he's making great progress. Thanks for updating, it's still the first thing I check when I'm here!

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersWife Wed 16-Jan-13 23:31:50

Todays update, He is still the same physically. Lungs not yet started to heal though most of his wounds are healing well or healed. He's back on the kidney machine just to help control fluid levels better.
The Ecmo machine is keeping him alive and stable enough for them to have reduced his sedation. This is why he's been responding to us in small ways. The responses show that his brain is okay.
But the very fact that he's still on Ecmo means he's still very poorly indeed. They are letting him wake up slightly but only to a point. They will keep him sedated until he's well enough to come off the Ecmo. This time is approaching but no one can say how long it wil be.
Days or weeks even. Hopefully days.

PickledApples Thu 17-Jan-13 00:40:03

Slow progress. Good to hear he is still being watched and treated / monitored closely since moving to the ward too.

ripsishere Thu 17-Jan-13 00:52:48

Doesn't matter whether it's weeks, days or months. He's moving in the right direction.

Take care.

Glad David is continuing to make progress even if it is slow. Are you still staying at the hospital?

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersWife Thu 17-Jan-13 19:55:45

No I'm not, I haven't been since he first got there sad DP is a gritter driver and has been on call constantly since last week so we haven't been able to get there sad

My mum went and stayed for a few days this week though, she got back yesterday. I really want to go soon though, but it takes a lot of planning.

ripsishere Thu 17-Jan-13 21:51:54

Don't fret over not staying there love. Since he is improving so much, you aren't really on call anymore if that makes sense.
Go David.

canutesauntie Thu 17-Jan-13 23:45:35

I'm so glad your brother is improving. Dont worry about not being there at the moment. He's in for a long haul and will really need you once they start to let him come round from the sedation. Rest up ready for all the hospital visiting!

Sunnywithshowers Fri 18-Jan-13 00:45:25

Cunny I echo what everyone else has said about not worrying that you can't be there with him at the moment.

Big hugs to you and yours tonight, and wishes for David's continuing improvement.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersWife Mon 21-Jan-13 08:56:12

Sorry I haven't updated for a couple of days, been very busy. This is Fridays update-
Last night he was quite awake and opened his eyes wide and seemed anxious...they talked to him for a while and put him back to sleep. His wakefulness was compromising his oxygen levels so they are keeping him asleep for now. They said its perfectly normal and he's stable.

And yesterdays update-
Things pretty much the same. His wounds have healed but stuff still in lungs, old blood n gunk etc. Heavily sedated again as when he's semi conscious it interferes with the oxygen etc. Sounds like he'll be on Ecmo a while longer yet. All normal just a question of time.

Thank you so much for your support so far everyone, I really appreciate it smile

mistlethrush Mon 21-Jan-13 09:06:51

Glad its still going well Cunny!

Sunnywithshowers Mon 21-Jan-13 09:23:41

I'm glad it's good news Cunny. smile

BitBewildered Mon 21-Jan-13 18:48:21

Thanks for the update! Thanks to your DH and his gritting colleagues too - they've been gritting like mad here all day.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersWife Tue 22-Jan-13 09:06:49

If I can chat MIL up to have DD all day on thursday I can go to Manchester with my mum and sister smile fingers crossed she says yes!

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersWife Wed 23-Jan-13 23:00:45

Update on David, the docs think he might have a clot on his lung sad
Ultra sound showed something in his right lung...could be fluid or a clot. They're going to put a chest drain in tomorrow and if it drains its fluid. If its a clot they will remove it in theatre.
His sedation is quite light again and he seems more settled than previously when it was light...he's not getting agitated now.

Going to visit tomorrow smile

Hi cunny, still waving when I pass hospital and thinking of him. Glad you re able to see him tomorrow.
It Is sounding positive

Cailleach Wed 23-Jan-13 23:43:18

Thanks for updating us...I was wondering how he was doing. He's a tough lad!

Sunnywithshowers Wed 23-Jan-13 23:56:40

Hi Cunny

I hope they're able to sort his lung out easily. Great news about the sedation. smile

Big hugs xxx

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersWife Thu 24-Jan-13 00:05:09

Cailleach he is very tough. The first week he was in hospital we were trying to work out how many cars he'd written off and simply walked away from, we ran out of fingers hmm the amount of times he's been in accidents, fallen out of trees and been beaten up is unreal. Not to mention the countless heart ops he's had!

Thank you so much everyone for your support through this.

diddl Thu 24-Jan-13 10:14:34

Sounds as if he has been through a lot-even apart from this!!

Hope he continues to improve.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersWife Thu 24-Jan-13 12:39:03

Just saw him briefly before he had another ultrasound and we noticed he's back on nicotine patches. My mum said 'Oh I see you're back smoking again David!' and he grimaced grin he's kind of concious, very weird.

Still thinking of you all xx

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersWife Thu 24-Jan-13 14:07:53

I've been with him for a while and it is heartbreaking. It's so much worse seeing him like this than when he was completely unconcious. He's lightly sedated now which means he can move a little and move his head. He was struggling and getting agitated and trying to get up. He started crying too sad I said to my mum that he looked like he needed a hug and he nodded sad

Sunnywithshowers Thu 24-Jan-13 14:13:54

Oh Cunny big hugs to you. My DB was in hospital after breaking his neck and it was terrifying when he was getting agitated.

(They sorted his neck - he walked out of there a few days later. smile)

BitBewildered Thu 24-Jan-13 15:45:01

Oh poor man, wanting a hug sad. I suppose he's too covered in tubes for one? He IS making progress though, and will be able to be bear hugged by all of you. Can he speak? Sorry if it's a stupid question. It occurs to me that he might have a tube down his throat, but I have no idea.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersWife Thu 24-Jan-13 15:54:40

He's too covered in wires and tubes for a hug, the best we can do is hold his hand. He can't speak, but he can move his arms, legs and head. It's so sad seeing him so helpless and frightened like this sad

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersWife Thu 24-Jan-13 15:56:20

He has a tracheostomy, which means he has a hole in the front of his throat for the ventilator. So his mouth his free.

BitBewildered Thu 24-Jan-13 16:46:55

So distressing for you all. It must be awful to see him like that. I'm guessing that the lessening of his sedation is an indication that he's improving. He has come a long way since your first post!

Sunnywithshowers Sun 27-Jan-13 23:43:53

Hello Cunny I was just popping in to find out how you and David are doing? xxx

StillSlightlyCrumpled Mon 28-Jan-13 09:48:13

Hi cunny, hope goings are still going ok. What a long journey this is for you all. Take care.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersWife Wed 30-Jan-13 18:56:06

Hi all, not much to update. The doctors decided that the fluid/clot on his lung was probably just a bit of fluid and decided not to do anything about it. He's gradually waking up more and more and he has his glasses now so he can see grin my sister is going again tomorrow and taking the ipad so he'll hopefully be able to communicate smile

eosmum Wed 30-Jan-13 19:20:11

Good to see he is improving, still thinking of you all.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersWife Wed 30-Jan-13 22:21:53

One of his lungs is starting to heal too, which is fantastic news!

So far his ECMO treatment has cost £144k shock

Lordy- but worth every penny. Am so glad for our NHS. The are amazing

Here's praying for David keeping onwards and upwards

Sunnywithshowers Wed 30-Jan-13 22:28:12

Hurrah for his lungs, treatment and specs smile

Money well spent Cunny

LegoAcupuncture Thu 31-Jan-13 11:00:32

Was just thinking of your brother today, this thread had dropped off my TIO so had to search it.

Glad to hear he is doing well, hope he continues to improve.

littleduckie Thu 31-Jan-13 16:58:41

Glad to hear he is still improving

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersWife Thu 31-Jan-13 17:13:04

My mum went today and he was awake when she got there but as soon as she spoke to him he got really upset and had to have more sedation to put him back asleep. Good news is that his left lung is healing and his right lung is better than it was.

Cailleach Thu 31-Jan-13 18:34:56

Good to hear, CunnyFunt, keep us informed on his progress.

Horsemad Thu 31-Jan-13 18:49:48

Good to hear his progress smile

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersWife Sat 02-Feb-13 19:27:11

FANTASTIC NEWS!!! He's off ECMO! That means that if his lungs are strong enough they'll move him back to where he was before Manchester hopefully on Monday or Tuesday smile smile smile

Hope he continues from strength to strength, January must have felt a very long month for you all!

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersWife Wed 06-Feb-13 22:33:49

Fantastic news! David is leaving Manchester tomorrow and is coming back to the local one he was at smile he was sat up in a chair yesterday apparently shock

He used to play football for a local disabled team and this saturday they're playing a game in his honour and his kit has been signed by Sheffield Wednesday smile

Oh wow Cunny that is just fantastic! Am so pleased for you all. Get him to give us all a little wave in Manchester!
Hope he arrives safely back home tomorrow (well not home but ykwim!)

LegoAcupuncture Wed 06-Feb-13 22:36:52

Hurray! He has done amazingly well.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersWife Wed 06-Feb-13 22:49:10

It truly is a miracle. A few weeks ago we were sat in hospital waiting for him to die, with literally a few hours to live. And now we're waiting for him to be able to speak to us! I just can't believe it.

Sunnywithshowers Wed 06-Feb-13 23:10:27

grin That's amazing Cunny.

ripsishere Thu 07-Feb-13 06:43:21

Smashing. I can't tell you how pleased I am.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersWife Thu 07-Feb-13 09:16:05

Not half as pleased as we are rips grin

ripsishere Thu 07-Feb-13 09:22:47

I can imagine. Well done both the NHS, your family and most of all, your brother.

ripsishere Thu 07-Feb-13 09:23:12

Oh FFFs, both was wrong but you know what I mean.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersWife Thu 07-Feb-13 09:30:41

Yes I do grin

Cailleach Thu 07-Feb-13 18:40:47

Tough bugger, your brother! Well done to him and you and the lovely old NHS.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersWife Sat 09-Feb-13 21:23:57

Extra extra! Read all about it! HUGE NEWS!!!! MASSIVE NEWS!!!

He came off the ventilator for a bit today and was fine smile he even had a little drink! He is half whispering half mouthing words and can converse. He asked my mum to take a photo of him and put it on his facebook page. I saw it, it's amazing, he's sat up in bed looking round and smiling. The doctors are utterly amazed at how much progress he's made over the past week.

He now remembers EVERYTHING about the attack though.

Sunnywithshowers Sat 09-Feb-13 21:38:54

WOOHOO! <pompoms>

That's fantastic news Cunny grin

Shellington Sat 09-Feb-13 21:40:03

Sounds amazing, glad docs are taking good care of him! Baby steps though, he'll want to be up and off smile

Horsemad Sat 09-Feb-13 21:42:56

Excellent news Cunny smile

FANTASTIC NEWS Cunny, sending hugs to you and yours xx

JsOtherHalf Sun 10-Feb-13 09:09:30

ChestyNut Sun 10-Feb-13 09:48:20

Such good news grin

Wishing David lots of strength for the road ahead.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersWife Sun 10-Feb-13 17:07:30

We were going to see him yesterday but we ended up spending 4-5 hours scrubbing blood off almost every surface in our house sad

Sunnywithshowers Sun 10-Feb-13 17:21:22

Blood? What happened Cunny? <hugs>

ChestyNut Sun 10-Feb-13 18:08:48

Why [Shock]

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersWife Sun 10-Feb-13 18:51:59

My dog somehow cut the end of his tail, it bled like buggery and he's a greyhound, with a very long, waggy tail. It was ridiculous! All over the walls, the furniture, the white dining chairs, DD's toys and her clothes that were drying on the airer.

Sunnywithshowers Sun 10-Feb-13 19:29:14

Oh your poor pooch! I hope he's okay, and you're also okay?

My lovely cat cut his mouth during a fit a couple of years ago, there was blood everywhere. You have my sympathy.

LegoAcupuncture Sun 10-Feb-13 19:33:04

Hurray for your brother.

Eek on the dog tail massacre!

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersWife Sun 10-Feb-13 20:08:33

Oh I'm fine thank you, just disappointed that I didn't get to visit David. The dog is fine, just miserabe because he has a bandage on his tail so to stop him chewing it he has to wear his muzzle. He needs the bandage because if he wags his tail and knocks his tail the scab just falls off and he redecorates again hmm

ripsishere Sun 10-Feb-13 23:24:52

Poor dog, but wow to David. Good lad.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee Thu 14-Feb-13 12:11:45

Just at the hospital now, it's amazing! He's sat in bed smiling and laughing and making jokes smile he can't talk so he has to mouth everything he's saying, we could do with a lip reader! I brought DD (20mo) today, it cheered him up quite a bit as he's pretty fed up. He's even managed to write a birthday card for my mum, that made her cry. It's her birthday today and we're off to Frankie and Benny's soon for lunch which will be nice.

DrGarnettsWinterMixture Thu 14-Feb-13 12:17:46

That's wonderful news, I'm so pleased for you smile Have a lovely lunch, and happy birthday to your mum!

Sunnywithshowers Thu 14-Feb-13 14:39:04

I'm so pleased for all of you Cunny. What a lovely birthday present for your mum smile

Have a wonderful lunch, and best wishes to David. He sounds awesome.

xxDebstarxx Sat 16-Feb-13 10:44:24

So pleased read about the improvements David is making and how wonderful for your mum. What a fantastic birthday present she has had.

Hi folks, sorry for the delayed update, I am unable to get on MN at the moment so have asked my good friend Scuttle to post this message for me.

David is doing really well, getting stronger every day. He still can't speak, eat or drink though, which is really frustrating for him, he's desperate for a Big Mac he has some orange squash that he can swill around his mouth to get some flavour but he can't swallow it.

He now has a mobile as well as my BILs iPad so we can text him and he can text back, which is great! He can also get on Facebook. His first post was just a 'Hi all, I'm back, thanks for the support' etc type message, and the next one is just SO typical of him, 'Well I don't know about you, but my belly feels like my throats been cut!' <groan> but it's great to see he still has his sense of humour he's allowed friends to visit now which means that pretty soon he'll have to have an appointments book to slot everyone in! Hopefully going to see him this weekend smile

Horsemad Fri 01-Mar-13 15:43:36

Great to hear he is continuing to make progress.
What a journey he's had.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee Sat 09-Mar-13 12:54:16

Hi all I'm back now. Fantastic update on David smile he came off the ventilator on Monday and was allowed to drink on that day, on Tuesday he was removed from ICU and had a smaller tube put in his trachea hole so he could have an eating test, and on Thursday he had his trachea removed completely and ate a massive plate of mash, broccoli and gravy!

He's able to walk too, he's even walked outside! The progress he's made in such a short space of time is utterly astounding. He is such a strong abd determined person. I'm proud to call him my brother smile

Horsemad Sat 09-Mar-13 13:26:26

Wow Cunny, amazing news thanks for updating. smile Well Done David!

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee Tue 12-Mar-13 09:45:17

He's coming out this afternoon!!!

Horsemad Tue 12-Mar-13 13:15:16

Wow! smile

escorpion Tue 12-Mar-13 13:31:42

Have been following this thread for a while and just wanted to say how pleased I am for you and your family. What great news that David has made an excellent recovery. smile

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee Tue 12-Mar-13 14:44:31

Well he left hospital at half 12, his first stop was McDonalds grin

Wonderful news. Bet you never thought a McDonald's meal would be good for someone's health!

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee Wed 13-Mar-13 17:33:20

Well David's freedom was short lived, he's back in ICU now. Mum picked him up from hospital and treated him to McDonalds (the nurse said he could eat anything as long as he chewed really well) and he was fine but late last night he started throwing up a lot (he was at his wifes house) and DW rang my mum who told her to ring an ambulance. Turns out a bit of sick got in his lungs and he's now sedated, on the ventilator with a chest infection sad

Horsemad Wed 13-Mar-13 17:48:09

Oh no sad

Really hoping it is sorted soon and he's home again before too long.

xxDebstarxx Wed 13-Mar-13 17:54:51

Come on David, you can do it!

He seems like such a fighter Cunny I hope he gets better soon.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee Tue 19-Mar-13 23:08:11

He is so fed up, went to visit him this evening. He's back out of ICU now and onto the normal ward. He's got a swallow test tomorrow and they're going to xray him as he eats to see where exactly the food is going. The reason for his chest infection wasn't actually the bit of sick that went into his lungs. The actual reason is that even though he was able to eat food and pass it ok, little bits were going the wrong way and ended up in his lungs! The McD's just finished him off

Sunnywithshowers Tue 19-Mar-13 23:25:54

I'm sorry to hear that Cunny, I hope that David is well again soon. x

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee Tue 19-Mar-13 23:34:10

I saw his back shock I thought his front was bad enough, he's got a 4-5" scar across his throat and a few scars on his chest (a couple from the knife but most are from drains etc), but omg his back! There's about 13 separate stab scars all over his back sad it looks an awful mess even though they've long since healed.

Horsemad Tue 19-Mar-13 23:49:03

Hi Cunny, hope David continues to improve.

Sunnywithshowers Wed 20-Mar-13 00:40:17

That sounds awful Cunny sad

ripsishere Wed 20-Mar-13 04:50:58

I missed your earlier updates.
Scars? pah. Scars are nothing. He is alive.
I bet he isn't so keen on MacD's now.
Well done David, onward and upward.

Sunnywithshowers Sun 24-Mar-13 01:09:23

Hi Cunny, how's David? x

MelodyBaker Sun 24-Mar-13 07:16:46

How is he? I am sorry your family are going through this. It is one of those things you hope will never happen too you , hope your looking after yourself x

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee Wed 27-Mar-13 10:28:02

Ooh sorry, only just seen this! He's very fed up, he hasn't had an eating test yet! That's tomorrow and hopefully they'll x-ray him then too. He can't wait to get back out.

Think I'm going to ask for this to be moved, I don't want it to go poof and it's due to go soon I think.

Sunnywithshowers Wed 27-Mar-13 22:30:41

Good idea Cunny. Poor David, he must be very frustrated (and hungry!).

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee Thu 28-Mar-13 18:20:48

He's out! Already! He had his eating test at 3.30 this afternoon and he's home already!

Sunnywithshowers Thu 28-Mar-13 21:23:38

Whoop! Whoop! <sparklers>

Fantastic news - well done David. And big hugs to you and your family xxx

Horsemad Fri 29-Mar-13 08:56:51

Great news! Don't overdo the Easter egg eating David!!!

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee Fri 29-Mar-13 14:14:40

I've just seen my grandma who told me more about Davids release, turns out he was let out straight away because he can't actually eat shock he's been given a supply of bagged food, enough to last 28 days. He still has his feeding tube in hanging out his nose!

Sunnywithshowers Fri 29-Mar-13 14:30:25

Poor David, that's rough. I hope that he's able to eat again soon.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee Thu 04-Apr-13 19:54:56

Poor David sad he found out today that he's got to keep his feeding tube in for at least 2 months!!

Sunnywithshowers Thu 04-Apr-13 19:57:16

I'm sorry to hear that Cunny, it's really crap. I hope the doctors are able to take it out sooner.

TheCunnyFuntIsAGrittersFiancee Thu 04-Apr-13 20:03:06

He's hungry constantly, he's a skinny little thing and needs about 3000 calories a day, instead he's only getting 1200 with the bagged stuff!

Horsemad Fri 05-Apr-13 15:05:19

Really hope he gets rid of the feeding tube soon.
