JoMumof3 Sun 30-Sep-12 21:51:34

I'm pretty new to this and chose my user name before I realised everyone had such interesting names on here. I was just wondering if people would like to share the story behind their name......

sittinginthesun Sun 30-Sep-12 21:52:16

I was sitting in the sun...

MrsPresley Sun 30-Sep-12 21:53:06

I wish I was grin

crazynanna Sun 30-Sep-12 21:53:45

It is the name my grandchildren address me by wink

oddslippers Sun 30-Sep-12 21:54:31

I have two pairs of slippers yet can never seen to find a matching pair hence .... grin

I had to find a name to replace my own one and this one just came to me based on Keep Calm and Carry On which seems to be everywhere at the moment!

Sossiges Sun 30-Sep-12 21:55:21

I like sausages wink

Mydogsleepsonthebed Sun 30-Sep-12 21:56:18

My dog sleeps on the bed ......

OrangeLily Sun 30-Sep-12 21:56:49

DH had actually bought me flowers for a change 'cos they'll look nice in the house'

I fancied the bloke in the ear piercing place, kept going back. grin

CouthyMowWearingOrange Sun 30-Sep-12 21:58:14

This is a 'new' name for me on here. Based on my first name on here. It's a spoonerism, and tbh it's a bit true, in as much as I am outspoken about things I believe in.

stopcallingmefrank Sun 30-Sep-12 21:58:18

I used to know someone who was in a band called Stop Calling Me Frank. Something happened to bring it to mind recently and the name made me laugh.

OwedToAutumn Sun 30-Sep-12 21:59:01

I recently namechanged, because DD1 (13) joined in a thread I was on. I was a bit uncomfortable about that, as I might ask for advice, or mention personal things on here, so I would rather be anonymous to my family on here.

This name is the title of a poem by Michael Luenig, and obviously an allusion to the poem by Keats.

My recovery from depression. I started off as dark mornings.

(Prays she doesn't thread kill)

Pascha Sun 30-Sep-12 21:59:54

It's an old Easter namechange from last year, I liked it enough to keep though I'm getting bored with it now, it doesn't lend itself to alterations very much so maybe I will have a think for Halloween..

AlmostAGoldHipster Sun 30-Sep-12 22:00:07

Mine's from a silly quiz on FB smile

Yamyoid Sun 30-Sep-12 22:01:08

My childhood best friend's nickname for me. We've lost touch so I thought maybe if she's ever on here, she'll know it's me.

LST Sun 30-Sep-12 22:01:38

It's my sons initials

<outs self completely>

ScorpionQueen Sun 30-Sep-12 22:03:20

Born in November, delusions of grandeur. smile

SabrinaMulhollandJjones Sun 30-Sep-12 22:03:36

Red Dwarf.
<wants to be international jetsetter>

littletingoddess Sun 30-Sep-12 22:05:06

Mine - Little Tin Goddess - is a line from the Metallica song "The Memory Remains" as I like the song. I thought of "Faded Prima Donna" but... Maybe for a name change one day...

RustyBear Sun 30-Sep-12 22:05:24

This is the original RustyBear made for me by my mum to take in my pocket on my first day of school. He was originally a deep rusty-red colour but has faded from being washed in my pocket so often. The patches cover the holes he got when attacked by moths. He's now over 50 years old and living in retirement on the shelf by my bed.

SerenaJoy Sun 30-Sep-12 22:05:57

Mine is the name of a character in my favourite book smile

Fairyjen Sun 30-Sep-12 22:06:08

I like fairies and I'm called Jen.

Also have large fairy tattoo.

FrankelSaysRelax Sun 30-Sep-12 22:06:12

Mine is a play on "Frankie Says Relax" and changed in honour of the mighty Frankel grin

No spare time MN ate it grin

redadmiralsinthegarden Sun 30-Sep-12 22:08:42

was looking for inspiration for a name-change. happened to notice red admirals on the buddleija, but (as you can see), I couldn't be arsed to find out how to spell buddleija properly grin

Eglantyne Sun 30-Sep-12 22:09:23

Two famous Eglantynes. One was Chaucer's prioress, who wasn't what she appeared to be on the surface. The other was the founder of Save the Children. Both alluding to my fear that one day someone will notice that I'm actually just pretending to know what I'm doing re parenting...

AncientsOfMuMu Sun 30-Sep-12 22:10:20

I roam across the land garden

LetUsPrey Sun 30-Sep-12 22:10:32

I saw mine on a t-shirt stretched across Steve Backshall's chest grin

I started with A name which described me and my interests.

Then I changed one word for halloween and didn't get around to changing back.

Then I need to name change so I just edited each of the 3 words to a synonym and ended up with hauntedlittlelunatic.

GnomeDePlume Sun 30-Sep-12 22:11:47

I am short, fat and wear feathers

isitmidnightalready Sun 30-Sep-12 22:12:01

I used to frequently same my name in surprise as I realise the time, whilst I lurk on MN. Now I am in bed much earlier, or much later if I find a good thread on mumsnet...

SPsFanjoHarboursDeadCatsAgain Sun 30-Sep-12 22:12:58

A article about a woman who's fella found a dead cat in her fat folds when he went down on her!

Usual everyday things of course grin

I have tremendous Norks.
They are not always under control
I love Victorian literature

Maryz Sun 30-Sep-12 22:15:31

Mine is rivetingly interesting and unusual.

There are no other Marys in the entire world [gavel]

I've been here since the dawn of time before user names were invented to be interesting

Yddraigoldragon Sun 30-Sep-12 22:15:57

Half Welsh, half English, dragon in both...

Maryz Sun 30-Sep-12 22:17:05

<tries to figure out who HLL is and can only come up with SpookyTinyNutter confused

chocolateteabag Sun 30-Sep-12 22:17:41

I meant to put chocolate teapot (as in "as much use as a") however had a brain fart and put bag instead
I like it though and often occasionally think how nice chocolate tea bags would actually be.

JustSpiro Sun 30-Sep-12 22:20:27

I was DumSpiroSpero after one of Lucas North's (Spooks) tattoos grin. The MNr's that know me call me Spiro, but otherwise I was constantly getting shortened to Dum - hence JustSpiro.

Now I get shortened to Just instead...confused

EdgarAllanPond Sun 30-Sep-12 22:21:48

WHen i was 17, i had a nice 1970 edition of the complete works of Edgar Allan Poe with beautiful illustrations.

i think the first version was Edgar Allan Poo because i was potty training at the time...

Previous NN was a Firefly class spaceship, but changed to this because of a thread about Supernatural and its rather nice trenchcoat wearing exAngel. It was supposed to be temporary but I liked it so decided to keep it. (MrDTK is on my profile, sadly he doesn't belong to me)

Oh and just in case the real MrsDTK is on here (or someone who knows her) Congratulations on the birth of your daughter, she's absolutely bloody adorable (and kudos on looking so good so soon after giving birth) grin thanks and have a nice brew

BestIsWest Sun 30-Sep-12 22:23:26

Because West IS Best. This is what I think every evening as I travel home from work into the sunset. Someone already had the name WestIsBest and only ever posted once.

Annunziata Sun 30-Sep-12 22:23:47

This is my birth certificate name, but I go by something else in RL. I still love it though.

AnneElliott Sun 30-Sep-12 22:25:01

Persuasion is my favourite book ever

bonnieslilsister Sun 30-Sep-12 22:27:04

My sister was known on line as bonnie for ages and I am her much younger and better looking lil sister. She is now ImperialBlether

aufaniae Sun 30-Sep-12 22:28:02

I joined a TTC thread, and chose aufaniae after a group of ancient European fertility goddesses. Thought it was apt. And if I believed in such things I'd say it was lucky as I was only on the TTC thread for under three weeks before getting a BFP (previously had been trying for about 5 months!) and am now 12 weeks pregnant smile

I was going through a messy divorce when I joined MN, I occasionally had bad days, but the day I joined I was having a good day. My other NN is TodaysNotAGoodDay, but I haven't used that one for ages now.

FairPhyllis Sun 30-Sep-12 22:31:02

Fair Phyllis is a Tudor madrigal by John Farmer: here

I am named after a delicious cocktail of my own invention I think . It's two measures of champagne and one of sloe gin and makes you want to dance grin

mmmmmchocolate Sun 30-Sep-12 22:32:26

Mmmmm as in naice..

Chocolate as in... Well chocolate!

Best said in homer Simpsons voice for greatest effect!

I was scooselooseabootthishoose because I'm scouse and a lovely mnetter came up with the name it's now been abbreviated as another poster had a very similar name.

Ruprekt Sun 30-Sep-12 22:33:11

I was another name for 8 years when some bitch came along and outed me to the head teacher at school.

I had to name change immediately as she knew who I was but I didnt know who she was. angry

Ruprekt in the Michael Cain film makes me laugh a lot hence my name.

marshmallowpies Sun 30-Sep-12 22:33:49

I name changed from something which identified me a bit too closely to anyone who knows me (too close to my Twitter name), and this was the first thing that popped into my mind.

It's taken from Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, of course - the song happened to be running round in my head that day.

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea Sun 30-Sep-12 22:33:59

I have an unexpected item in my shagging area wink

It was supposed to be a temporary NN for a specific thread in general health but some people were kind enough to tell me it made them laugh.

It made me feel slightly better about my unexpected item.

I have already thought of my next NN should I ever decide to name change. It is a truely excellent one which I might sell to the highest bidder grin

FairPhyllis Sun 30-Sep-12 22:34:19

Sloe That cocktail sounds amazing, I will have to try it sometime.

Chocolateporridge Sun 30-Sep-12 22:39:31

Because nothing beats a bit of nutella stirred through porridge in the morning or for supper, or for a snack....

marriedinwhite Sun 30-Sep-12 22:43:37

I had my colours done, when it was the thing, just after my engagement was announced and the lady said, you are one of the few people who can wear white and creams and ivories (unless they have a pink or blue tinge) will drain you. So I was married in white. Had a veil and a train and everything.

steppemum Sun 30-Sep-12 22:45:07

I lived on the Kazakh steppe for 8 years, and started mn from there (many years ago now, (reaches for dentures and walking stick)
Quite like th eplay on words, although I am not actually a stepmum .

Novia Sun 30-Sep-12 22:47:34

When I first joined I was planning my wedding to my Spanish DP and that's the word for fiancé in Spanish!

CollieEye Sun 30-Sep-12 22:53:38

I've name changed a few times. My first name was my twitter name, and twitter shows my real first name so I thought it best to be a bit more anonymous especially when I confess to things here. I had a couple of other names but they didn't feel right. One evening I got that uncomfortable 'being stared at' feeling, looked up from the lap top to see my dog giving me the patented Paddington Bear hard stare. So here we are...

I pushed the button on the bottle when I just meant to sniff it. I inhaled it and everyone else thought it hilarious. I didn't.
And I didn't even like the smell that stuck in my nose for days.

Mine is from a line from ds's favourite book, the author of which clearly knows all about how cats think smile

lovebunny Sun 30-Sep-12 22:55:31

couldn't think of a name, thought it ought to be about rabbits as i have four mini-lops, came up with 'lovebunnies', didn't like it, tried 'lovebunny' which sounds like a porn queen and so totally inappropriate it made me laugh - so i kept it.

Imsosorryalan Sun 30-Sep-12 23:01:58

An absolutely hilarious post on MN about an old lady and farting and an ambulance man called Alan...still cracks me up!

RandallPinkFloyd Sun 30-Sep-12 23:02:59

Nc'd last week as someone appeared with a really similar nn.

Was watching a film at the time so picked my favourite character. (second time I've told that particularly dull story in the last half hour!)

iliketea Sun 30-Sep-12 23:03:01

I wanted a cunning disguise (I actually drink coffee, rarely tea) smile

RandallPinkFloyd Sun 30-Sep-12 23:05:36

I'mSoSorryAlan that was the best thread ever. I was in tears by the time we got to that poor woman!

DowntonTrout Sun 30-Sep-12 23:13:03

I used to be someone else on here which was a name that was apt for my situation at the time,

Then someone, Worraliberty I think, said she had always thought my name read DowntonTrout and so, because I would always have been linked with a very long, memorable saga, I changed to this.

Nothing to do with Downton Abbey or trout fishing.

DowntonTrout Sun 30-Sep-12 23:14:55

And probably, in hindsight, not much of a name change grin

SomeoneThatYouUsedToKnow Sun 30-Sep-12 23:18:57

Errr, well, mine is pretty dull compared with most peoples but I name change fairly often for stalking purposes

My MN name is from the Goyte song, sort of. I was name changing and couldn't think of a name when this song come on the Radio.

Shelby2010 Sun 30-Sep-12 23:19:06

Swamp logger from 'AxMen', which DH was watching while I was MNetting & couldn't be arsed think of anything witty.

BrianCoxIsUpTheDuff Sun 30-Sep-12 23:22:09

I had another NN, but it was similar to a MN regular (who I've not seen for aaages rhondajean - is she still around?)

Then there were LOADS of threads about how dishy Prof Cox is but I can't stand the man. He is freaky and he scares me.

My reasons being:

He has scary hair
big teeth
wild eyes.

I do like being BrianCox though, feels right, I just change the last bit whenever I feel the need. I have been:

and am now UpTheDuff, because I am!

I have been a few other NN's but none of them felt right so reverted back to ol' Coxy and in a perverted kinda way, I now like him more than I used to because of my MN association with him grin

jaffacakehips Sun 30-Sep-12 23:24:13

I like Jaffa cakes and I have hips don't think they are related gringrin

krystianah Sun 30-Sep-12 23:25:45

Mine is my name, only glammed up into something much more exciting. I actually tried to make it ridiculous, like Jerry Springer guests, who have names like La'Keisha-Shyana. However, like all weird names you hear (in the playground or showbiz) you just get used to them...and I really like my nom de plume. Makes me think of champangne glasses, ice, chandeliers and all things glam. Just don't call me Chris, okay?

StaceeJaxx Sun 30-Sep-12 23:28:35

Ever since watching Rock of Ages, I've been in love with Stacee Jaxx. grin

KatoPotato Sun 30-Sep-12 23:39:43

When I found out I was pregnant (at 20 weeks!) my work colleague said he'd hook me up with his pregnant wife for advice but it 'mostly involves registering on Internet forums'

As I'm called kate, nickname Kato, had something cooking inside that we called 'Kato Potato'

CinnabarRed Sun 30-Sep-12 23:43:28

Mine is after my first yacht, already called Cinnabar when I bought her. Which makes me sound much more glamourous than I am.

DameFanny Sun 30-Sep-12 23:43:34

I took an MN break and came back with the wonderful fanny after a riverboat in a Pratchett novel. Then joined a thread about female equivalents to chaps.

Justspiro - I'm reminded of 'justcallmedog' who got very annoyed when people still couldn't get it right..

CinnabarRed Sun 30-Sep-12 23:46:05

And I can't spell...

MirandaWest Sun 30-Sep-12 23:48:36

Character in a set of books that I love.

OvO Sun 30-Sep-12 23:53:54

Because it looks like an owl.

SuoceraBlues Sun 30-Sep-12 23:56:22

My Italian MIL (suocera) came to live with us cos her carer ran away and the old people's home had kicked her out for being disorderly.

I got the Blues.

But it is getting better. Or I'm just getting used to it.

She hasn't called me slutwhoreprostituteslappertheif for oh...about four days. This is MAJOR progress.

But I am not going to tempt fate by changing my username.

InvisibleHotPinkWeasel Sun 30-Sep-12 23:57:15

This is my username for when I'm in trouble.

It was born out of a statement I made on a thread that culminated in my stating

Then I'm a Hot Pink Weasel Wearing Lederhosen

That Maryz up there pointed out the name potential.

I have recently broken Mnet on more than one occasion so currently have ditched the Lederhosen for an invisibility cloak.

There are a couple of reasons, but the sane one is a play on words of a beatles song.

InvisibleHotPinkWeasel Sun 30-Sep-12 23:59:03

Tapir, yours is one of my favourite names makes me smile every time I cross your path.

5madthings Sun 30-Sep-12 23:59:22

I was 3madboys, then i had ds4 and became 4madboys and then i had dd. I stayed 4madboys for a year or so after she was born but a number of posters said i should change my name to include dd and everyone assumed i only had boys etc.

I couldnt be arsed thinking up anything new so 5madthings was easy. I am slightly mad and have five mad (but adorable) children.

picturesinthefirelight Mon 01-Oct-12 00:00:41

It's the name of a song from a musical that dd's was in & her character sung.

100mph Mon 01-Oct-12 00:01:09

Because I am fast.. sometimes.. in my head..

BrittaPerry Mon 01-Oct-12 00:01:14

I use the initials BP in most of my name changes, for the past three years anyway, unless I am trying to actually hide* Britta Perry is on the quite amazing Community

*except for when I had the name of my blog, just for using on bloggers, but it snuck onto the main boards. Oh, and my other blog too...

I'm basically a namechange slut. But rubbish at hiding it.

Thanks pink - it describes me to a t...short, snuffly and spotty wink

Well.. it all started with Sarah being a brat, then I turned up and showed her my tights, juggled my balls and turned into an owl. Then the silly bitch broke my Escher exhibit and said I had no power over her. Honestly... Some people are so precious!

OpheliasWeepingWillow Mon 01-Oct-12 00:15:56

Because I am a gloomy cow. And I love the Waterhouse portrait of Ophelia. So... Ophelia plus weeping plus willow growing aslant a brook.

WandaDoff Mon 01-Oct-12 00:23:16

I like crap wordplay smile

SummerRain Mon 01-Oct-12 00:28:37

I live in the west of ireland.....

negativecreep Mon 01-Oct-12 00:30:54

just a nirvana song smile

PorkyandBess Mon 01-Oct-12 00:35:22

I like a bit of Gershwin and I was joining BIWI's bootcamp.

I have just looked it up - this is my 17th name.

cynner Mon 01-Oct-12 00:39:06

My real life name is a child I was called school the Head screamed at me that I was a naughty little Cynner, I became..

Noqontrol Mon 01-Oct-12 00:42:03

I have no control....

Longdistance Mon 01-Oct-12 00:49:39

My old nickname from school days. Was very apt for what I used to do for a living, and is a character from pigeon street.

PorkyandBess Mon 01-Oct-12 00:54:54

Ah, Long Distance Clara - I remember her!

JustSpiro Mon 01-Oct-12 07:57:41

Justspiro - I'm reminded of 'justcallmedog' who got very annoyed when people still couldn't get it right.

Well I'm not going to lose any sleep over it, but hopefully being on this thread might minimise it. Anyway 'Just' is better than 'Dum' grin!

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans Mon 01-Oct-12 10:41:27

Welcome Jo, maybe we can help you come up with another nickname?

Empress of the Seven Oceans is my favourite book and I think it works nicely as a nickname, easy to shorten and also easy to vary for seasonal namechanges / if I feel like it, but still recognisable.

ScarlettCrossbones Mon 01-Oct-12 10:47:08

It was my DS trying to say "skull and crossbones" when he was about 3. Thought "ScarlettCrossbones" was much nicer!

BlameItOnTheCuervo Mon 01-Oct-12 10:54:33

Fir years I had a name based on my rl petname. But after stropping and deleting my account I chose this because I think its one of the best song lines, a mantra I used to live by, before I became dull.

She is the singer/songwriter of the theme tune to Plants vs Zombies, which was my children's and my obsession at the time that I registered.

When I heard that song, I knew that one of them or me had finished the game again and the words always made me laff.

OhChristFENTON Mon 01-Oct-12 11:11:12

Mine was of course in honour of this wonderful dog . I laughed and laughed, and still do, and I first came across the clip right here on MN.

Good old MN, good old Fenton.

SummerRain Mon 01-Oct-12 11:20:08

OCF... that's hilarious grin

I wonder does that poor man know he and his dog are internet celebrities?

I've got 4 kids by 3 different dads. blush 2 have a Scottish father,1 has an Iraqi Kurdish father and the youngest father is Moroccan. I realise this makes me sound Luke a complete slapper but I've just been unlucky in love. I'm with a lovely man now though and I know this time it's going to last.

Signet2012 Mon 01-Oct-12 11:29:47

We where trying to get pregnant when I first came on mn. Decided it would happen in 2012. Due to my surname baby would be a cygnet, mixed with partners nickname for spelling grin

I chose this name as a reminder to do it every day......

(We have our own business which still isn't going according to plan, we have significant negative equity in our house that prevents us from selling it, we've used all our savings to live on while we get the business established and now we're at crunch time. It's either going to work in the next three months or we'll be bankrupt).

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans Mon 01-Oct-12 11:51:06

Good luck, ChinUp.

MamaGeekChic Mon 01-Oct-12 11:53:23

I'm a mother to 17mo DD, I work in the IT industry, I love all things style and beauty related.

nipersvest Mon 01-Oct-12 11:53:59

mine is a recent name change. many years ago, when i first joined mn, it was me who posted a link to another forum, who were discussing mn in terms of it being a vipers nest. nipersvest is a play on that. i used it briefly ages ago but am now using it permanently.

MrsAceRimmer Mon 01-Oct-12 12:16:46

Have name changed to this for the Red Dwarf new series. I can only dream that he'll be mine blush
My nn before was IsSamNormansDad, a result of DS watching far too much Fireman Sam while I was pregnant with DD, and lets face it, we all wonder grin

I'm named after one of my favourite songs by my favourite singer. It tells the story of him being in love with an English songwriter who broke his heart just when he was about to tell her he loves her. If Ds had been dd she would have been named after the English songwriter. Ds is named in one of his other songs. I am a huge obsessed stalker fan grin

nananaps Mon 01-Oct-12 12:50:23

im up the duff and need lots of nananaps of an afternoon at the mo.

BlameItOnTheCuervo Mon 01-Oct-12 12:58:08

Nananaps, are yoiiu my sis? That's a term she uses!

greenandcabbagelooking Mon 01-Oct-12 13:00:48

I contributed "I'm not as green as I'm cabbage looking" to a thread about old saying jut after joining, when I had a very boring name. I thought it had good nickname potential, so with a bit of altering it became my name.

MerlinScot Mon 01-Oct-12 13:08:36

Merlin has been my nick offline for ages too, it was given to me by an American online friend I met years ago. She said I was better than a magician, so she said "you're better than Merlin!" and so it stuck with me. Scot is referring to Scotland, where I live. It came out only because Merlin was a nick already taken everywhere!!

DowntonOut Mon 01-Oct-12 13:19:17

Felt I was too prolific on here and had shared to much personal stuff under my original name no name-changes. Had Downton on my mind and the name is a word play on Down and Out (was feeling a bit miserable at the time).

I have since discovered DowntonTrout - Our NCs were around a similar time from what I can gather, but are not related. When I can think of something, I might NC again.

JoMumof3 Mon 01-Oct-12 14:12:45

Wow, thank you everyone for replying. I couldn't believe it when I logged back on. I never thought about the whole not wanting people to know who you are issue, hopefully I'm never going to be so controversial on here that I'll need to hide! I like the idea of having 2 usernames and switching between them though!

I think I am going to have to change my user name to something more exciting. I'm going to become LittleRaindrop I think, because in March I'm having a my first ever picture book published which is called The Little Raindrop (I'm sure you'll all hear more about it nearer the time smile)

aufaniae Mon 01-Oct-12 14:19:56

Welcome, LittleRaindrop - lovely name smile

BlameItOnTheCuervo Mon 01-Oct-12 14:24:31

That's lovely, just to warn you, mnhq don't allow promotion or advertising onboard, unless yoiu pay the fee.

ShesADreamer Mon 01-Oct-12 14:27:32

My first retired racing greyhound's registered racing name.

smoothieooo Mon 01-Oct-12 14:29:02

Many years ago when I was working in meedja, I was having a discussion with some colleagues about being smart - apparently the more intelligent you are, the more ridged and pitted your brain is. The accusation levelled at me was that I was such a dumb-ass, that my brain was as smooth as an egg. hmm

Years (and career change) later, I'm still called by my MN name by some people...

ByTheWay1 Mon 01-Oct-12 14:30:25

I tend to say..... by the way a lot .... and after leaving when all the threads seemed to be doom and gloom and rehashing old things over and over and over - ended up with having to put a 1 on there.....

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans Mon 01-Oct-12 16:24:31

That must be so exciting, LittleRaindrop, congratulations.

LittleRaindrop Tue 02-Oct-12 10:32:14

Thank you for the heads up BlameItOnTheCuervo, I will be careful with what I say. I wonder if they would be OK with me pointing people to Twitter if anyone is interested?

Thank you Empress, it is a really exciting time. I saw the illustrations last week which was pretty special smile

Seriouslysleepdeprived Wed 10-Oct-12 19:43:47

Name says it all really...

SeriouslySleepDeprived I think we have a lot in common. confused

Because of this except that I'd only ever heard the routine so spelled it wrong! sad
