Rhiannon · 04/05/2001 20:09

Rhiannon is a name I've started to like a lot recently, but it came into my head too late to call my daughter it, so it's my fantasy name!

I chose Candy because of the Jesus and Mary Chain song, "Some Candy Talking" I thought it seemed appropriate!

Starling · 04/05/2001 21:43

I chose mine because it was the first thing I saw when I looked out of the window (good job it wasn't a tit!)

Oh Rhiannon, and I thought it was your REAL name, because that's what my daughter is called and I was going to ask you what you thought of it as an adult! I always hated my name from being a teenager I'm assuming my daughter will hate her name too! Also what for short, Rhia, Rhi, Reeny, Anna, Non....!? She refers to herself as 'Yanny' at the moment which is quite sweet though... Still it's a bit pointless asking you now!!!
(By the way if anyone knows, there is supposed to be a song by someone or other (Fleetwood Mac?) that is called Rhiannon and I was wondering how I could get hold of a copy, is it an album track? Is it good? Sorry it's a bit before my time! Thanks...)

Oh yeah, I chose my name because it's an extension of my own and one of my friend's refers to me as 'the Lizzer' which makes me laugh a lot, sounds like some kind of sci-fi monster, Raaaah!!

Yes Rhiannon is a lovely song. Go on to ask.co.uk and see if it can help, I've found some excellent websites from it.

Sorry to disappoint you, I am actually Annie and I did wonder whether Rhiannon would turn into Annie as a shortened version, so it's probably a good job I didn't give it to my daughter.

Just had a nosey on ask.co.uk myself. Rhiannon is on the album The Dance.

I've even got the words for you!

Rhiannon rings like a bell thru the night and wouldn't you love to love her? She rules her life like a bird in flight and who will be her lover? all your life you've never seen a woman - taken by the wind - would you stay if she promised you heaven? - will you ever win...?

Chorus Rhiannon, Rhiannon, Rhiannon

She is like a cat in the dark and then she is the darkness, she rules her life like a fine skylark and when the sky is starless all your life you've never seen.. a woman.. taken by the wind..
-would you stay if she promised you heaven?
-will you ever win? - will you ever win?

Chorus Rhiannon, Rhiannon, Rhiannon

Dreams unwind, Love's a state of mind.

Hope you like it, lovely words!

Jbr is my initials, basically but my name is actually Jay. Just that!

I like this website because you can just have initials and just give your e-mail address without an inquest unlike on other sites I've looked at. Also, the e-mail isn't required because they are going to investigate you, it's just in case you forget your password.

Thanks so much for that Rhiannon (I've forgiven you for dashing my hopes on the name front now!) I'm so pleased the words are nice and not "Rhiannon is an evil witch who broke my heart..." or something!!! I never thought to look it up as a song before I chose it. I really loved it straight away, different but traditional - and there's Welsh blood in her family, so it was perfect, shame it's an odd one to spell unless you've heard of it. I was shocked because there's loads of people who have never heard of it before at all - didn't think it was THAT rare...

I'll be asking everyone I know if they own the album now too, cheers for that....!!

My nickname was my husband's idea.He says looking at my bum reminds him of a peach, hence Peaches.Maybe it's a bit private to share but I think it's quite funny.I think this discussion site is great and discovered it by chance.I'm so glad I did.
Take Care,

I choose Winnie because at university I needed a password and I had an article on Winnie Mandela in front of me. Simple but true. I've tended to use it ever since...

I found this website thanks to an article in a paper. I do think it is great. The only problem is I am slightly addicted! Help...

Tigger · 06/05/2001 11:03

I chose Tigger because we all love Tigger and Winnie the Pooh in our house, and it was the kids who chose it for me. I saw in a magazine someone who had been surfing the net and had come across this site and said it was very good, thats how I got started.

Eulalia · 06/05/2001 19:35

I've been using Eulalia for awhile now on other boards. It is the name of one of my toy sheep. I collect anything to do with sheep. Except the real thing! This one you squeeze its middle and it baas. The name means beautiful voiced.

I too found a magazine article with this website in it and then I realised that I had seen the two founders on tv sometime before I was the proud owner of a "pooter" as my two year old calls it.My nickname was something my then boyfriend now husband gave me and hasn't called me it for years. My children went into hysterics at my explanation of why I'd chosen it! They're at that age!

Midge · 06/05/2001 21:25

Oh dear, I am almost too ashamed to confess (almost...) Midge is my moms cats name - I couldnt think of anything else at the time. Sad isn't it.
I found the site through a magazine article. The same magazine also helped me, via e mails to find a really good web site for parents of premature babies - we are hopelessly undercatered for in this country.

An old friend of mine had a cat called Clitoris. Good job I did'nt choose that one eh.
My husband wanted to call our cat Bo***s so we could shout it from the back door at night!
I didn't let him... so Midge it is.

I wish I'd thought of something funny like you lot. Mine came from a copy of Pericles which was the book I was supposed to be cataloguing when I came across this website. Starling, if I'd followed your example I'd be air-conditioning-vent.

Tel · 07/05/2001 19:26

My nickname is something my currently childless friends used to call me in our crazy London days - in full it's Telstar, from the groovy discmakers of the seventies. In fact, I rarely get called my proper name in full.
I found this site after reading a newspaper article and I must say it's been a bit of a lifeline. Know what you mean about the addiction thing too.

Chairmum · 07/05/2001 20:14

Eulalia, I'm a sheep collector, too! I've never met another 'sheepy' person before, so I'm really pleased to hear about your pastime. I don't have the real life version, either, but have been asked to help with lambing next year (post F&M) on a friend's farm.

Do you get given sheep things at Christmas and birthdays? I get them by the bucket load. I tend to hide away the ones I don't like, I'm afriad. I have lots of night shirts and pj's with sheep on them and three pairs of sheep slippers.

All in all, I find my sheep so much better behaved than my children, lol!

Hedgehog · 08/05/2001 08:20

I chose my nickname because I have always loved hedgehogs and I feel rather like one at the moment- all spiky on the outside and all soft underneath. Just hope I don't get splatted by a car......!

I found this website on another parenting-type website sometime around February, someone had mentioned it on the Boards there. I'm totally addicted and it's a good job my hours are being 'disintegrated' (waiting for them to get round to the old VRs!!). I chose my nickname as, at the time, I was looking forward to Spring - and still am!!! Were the last 2 days all we're going to get??

I wonder how many 'surf' here who don't actually post? I look forward to logging on!!

This board is hilarious! I always wondered how Eulalia came up with her nickname! I wish I'd thought of something snappier than my initials.

Report
Lizzer · 09/05/2001 12:05

Yeah it's funny isn't it, finding out how people chose their names... I may be a bit weird here, but does anyone else draw 'mental pictures' of the people using their names as a guide?
For example 'Eulalia' I have down as strong, Greek goddess type (don't know why!) 'Tigger' - full of life, energy, umm.. bounce! 'Rhiannon'- mysterious, dark haired raven!'Ems'- like a friendly next door neighbour who pops round for coffee! Winnie'- I always thought was from 'the pooh' and not 'Mandela', and thought it would be great to have an 'Eeyore' too - but I guess I'll have to re-think that one! I'll stop there but they are all complementary I assure you!
Yes, I am probably cracking up, but I agree with Tel saying this place has been a bit of a lifeline too, as most of my friends are without children so haven't any hands on experience. I just wish I'd known about it from being pregnant and through those early weeks, it's so nice to hear pearls of wisdom and just to be told 'actually, you're not doing anything wrong so don't worry' is the best!
