CYSTITUS IN TEN YEAR OLD DD!! Help??

Hello SmileSmileSmile

Throughout the week, my DD aged 10 has been screaming in pain because she explains to me that her bum is sore and itchy and her front is the same. She also says that she keeps on fidgeting and wriggling due to the pain and frustration. She has kept me up every single day until the latest 2:30 and it is becoming ridiculous. We have took her to the doctors and they put her on antibiotics and told her to drink lots of water. She has been doing this but is still in pain. Also, this pain only occurs when she is laying in bed at nighttime. We are both very tired during the morning because she has been in pain half the night. It is truly horrible! She screams and screeches in pain, clutching on to her front and shouting for me to come and help her. There is truly nothing I can do! It is affecting her sleep and health and my sleep and health. She also mentioned that it feels as if her "front is burning up" and her " bum aches with pain." When she eventually gets to sleep, she wakes up about 4 hours later. What can I do to cure this? Ps: really sorry for the long paragraph ( I had rather a lot to say)

Thanks,

Ruby Smile

It will take a few days for the antibiotics to start to take effect.

She might find seeing in the bath a bit easier. You also give her paracetamol/calpol to help her with the pain, provided she isn't allergic to it. Ibuprofen/calprofen might be helpful for the inflammation too.

Has she been treated for worms too as that DNA cause itching? Has her urine been tested to make sure it is a UTI? Antibiotics can cause thrush so that could be an issue too

Are you absolutely sure it's cystitis? An itchy, burning bum at night is a classic symptom of worms.

It sounds more like thursh to me than cystitis. Thrush can pop up after a course of antibiotics. Check that canestan is appropriate for 10 year olds and try that.

Also stick her in a cool bath with a couple of cups of table salt. It should soothe whatever is hurting.

Hmmm the worms thing definitely sounds possible as well - that's usually a night time only issue. You might even be able to see them if she'll let you have a look.

Sounds a lot like worms to me too, my DS gets this often - worth looking into this.

I was going to suggest worms too, they don't always present with anal itching. My DD was investigated for appendicitis, she was in so much pain. Turned our to be threadworm.

Agree about the cool bath with some salt! Also try cold damp cloth for her front bits. I used to get lots of UTI from around 10 onwards (thank you puberty) and used to find sitting on cold damp faceclothes a restbite from the burning and also had cool baths.

This really sounds like threadworms. They can travel into the the vagina and cause irritation and urine infections, and can give terrible stomach cramps with a very itchy bottom. An Ovex tablet from the pharmacist will help. Prob best to treat the whole family. Pumpkins seeds (if you can get her to eat them!) and pineapple juice are anti-parasitic and can 'immobilise' the worms. I know threadworms probably may seem unlikely but it really isn't - given the symptoms you describe. Good luck with sorting it - nothing worse than seeing your child so distressed.
