Life Insurance - help needed please!

Have decided I really need to get some for me and DP, as DD is nearly 3 now.

DP is on a fairly low income, and I am still a full-time student, so we are broke at the moment, but I am due to start work as a junior doctor in August so our income should increase quite steadily thereafter. So whilst I cannot afford expensive premiums right this minute, I do want to make sure that DD will always be well provided for and might be able to afford to pay more in the future.

I really don't know where to start in regards to comparing policies. A quick look suggests that it is not really something the BMA offer.

Where can I get impartial advice to compare policies without someone trying to push their own product?

I'm really quite naive with financial matters as I have never really had any money to speak of!

Can anyone nudge me in the right direction or recommend anyone?

Thank you so much for your comprehensive reply, it is a very good starting point!

I hadn't even considered just saving rather than an actual insurance policy, that is a good idea. But I guess I just want the assurance that if I drop down dead tomorrow (which I hope is unlikely!), after we essentially have had no time to accrue anything of any value, she will be looked after.

I guess if I stay alive (which I hope I do!) I am hoping I will have chance to build up assets etc. that will have some worth - we plan to buy a home etc as soon as we can afford.

But at the moment we have diddly squat! Although it seems choosing a policy is an assignment in itself, and right now I am tied up in finishing my course!

Think I will delegate it to dp to research the best deals - thanks for the links and the advice!

If what you want is a life policy, just go on //www.moneysupermarket.com and get your quotes off there. If you are youngish without major health issues, that would be an impartial place for comparing prices.

A pure life policy should not cost much in itself. Critical illness policies cost a lot more and, depending on how you feel about the risk, I have steered clear of them as I don't feel they are worth the cost but that is just me.
