Confusion on mortgages & buying a house.

OH & I are looking into buying a house. There are so many ways of getting a mortgage & putting down a deposit etc. I just wanted to know what you felt the best way was? We pay far too much a month on our privately rented place considering how small & damp the place is. We looked at how much deposit we'd have to put down for a nicer & spacious place to buy & turns out we'd be paying less a month for our mortgage than to rent.
