What to do

My ds (12 months) has been in nursery since he was 3 months, recently he has started having a lot of accidents, and has been in the accident book three times in the last 2 days, most of the time it is just stuff like other kids hitting with toys or him stumbling and falling because he is learning to walk, i accept these accidents as i know this happens and nothing can be done. yesterday when i picked him up he had a big gash on the underneath of his chin which he had done whilst pulling himself up on the fire door and falling on metal that was sticking out from the frame of the door. now don't know what to do, all other nurseries we have looked at haven't seemed as good as this one in other areas and really don't want him to be there today as the door is still broken, me and dp can't get any time off work and have no one around that could look after him till we get something else sorted.

I agree that accidents do happen at this age, but having metal sticking out of the door is gross negligence IMHO and the nursery manager needs to make it a priority and sort it out ASAP.

You also need to have a very serious discussion with the manager and voice your concerns. Is the staff/child ratio correct in his room?

My DS went through a stage when he was about 14 - 16 months where I had to sign an accident form about 3 or 4 times a week.

All they have said is that they are going to get some foam or something to put around the door, the ratio isn't correct all the time. just don't want him to be there, feel like such a bad mum by still taking him today

If the ratio isn't right ALL the time then that is a major concern and I would report it to OFSTED and inform the manager of your intentions. It means that your child is not being taken care of properly and is potentially at risk.

Putting a piece of foam on the door is only going to "soften" another childs fall but could still do serious harm. After all it is a major health & safety risk and I personally would not be happy about it!

You are not a bad mum - none of this is your fault! Have you thought about a child minder instead of a nursery?

don't really know much about childminders, he really likes the nursery enviroment and didn't think a childminder would be the same. have rang ofsted, they are ringing me back later to go through a complaint. thanks for your time

I really hope you manage to sort something out. If you raise your concerns with the nursery and OFSTED, then maybe things will improve. Good luck!
