Nurseries

$50 question: when's the best age to start (part-time) nursery?

Our DS has had the same (part-time) nanny since he was 4 months, and he adores her. The thing is, she's planning to move away later this year, by which time our son will be nearly 3. My DH thinks that he'll be more than ready for nursery.
I worry that losing his nanny and going straight to nursery will be a great shock for DS.
He's very sociable, happy and talkative, but I can't help thinking that's because he's felt so secure for so long.
Though it would cost a bomb, should we try to have both nanny and nursery overlapping for, say, a month, just to ease things in?
Writing this, I realise I'm sounding unbelievably precious, but our nanny is really part of our family now, and it'll be a real loss when she goes. I know every child is different etc, but do any of you have a similar experience?

maybe he could go for just a few hours a week until she goes?

there'll be lots of others start at 3 too so he won't be the only one, which might help?
