DS spiked with coral at nursery

DS keeps falling over and banging his head on things which I guess is part of the course for a 9mo old. But the other day, he fell forward onto a piece of spikey coral that another child was holding. I don't want to make a mountain out of a molehill, but I do kind of think that they can't have been watching him. I don't let him go near any pointy things like forks. Poor little thing has little scratches all over his forehead. Any thoughts on whether I should be worried about this? (They have got rid of the coral...)

It sounds like one of those things, really. He won't learn to walk unless he keeps trying, and falling over is part of the process.

I wouldn't woory much about the coral, either. Just unfortunate that it was in the way of your DS's fall.

However closely watched, it's impossible to prevent a child from ever falling - on occasion I've been right next to DS watching him closely and he's fallen and I haven't caught him in time. He's also had falls at nursery and it was explained to me clearly how it happened - in one case he was pulling up on a table and fell against the leg of it - and I think that's reasonable.

The coral is a bit daft though - it can be extremely sharp and I wouldn't have it near babies. As long as they have learned from it and are apologising and won't do it again. I might also ask to see the stuff they have out and check there isn't anything else silly or dangerous.

I imagine they had the coral as part of a session on touch - think it's part of the national curriculum for nurseries ie Ofsted birth to three matters or whatever it's called. Just one of those things.

Yes - it was part of a treasure box. Might check that they don't have other spikey things in it. Just struck me as a bit daft, but they were very, very apologetic!!
