Bruise Nursery

My son had a bruising on his forehead when I went to pick him up from nursery. The nursery nurse did not inform me at first and only started talking about it when I was looking at it. I asked her what happened and she said she thought it was paint and tried to remove it. She said it might be a scratch but it clearly does not look like a scratch. I am upset about it because no has explained to me what happened and tried to play it down. Whenever I touch the bruised area my son does not feel comfortable so if it was a fall or something hit him I am sure he would of reacted and cried.

I dont know whether to bring this up again to try to find out what actually happened. I understand accidents happen with children but I am upset about not knowing. They are normally really good with him and I was really happy with the care being given to my son. This is the only time I felt unsettled. Am I over thinking this?

Nope not at all. I'd speak to the manager and ask her/him to investigate what happened and confirm to you what strategies they have put in place to ensure this doesn't happen again. Bumps and bruises are to be expected at nursery but any accidents should be documented and explained to you.

Thanks big area, they said it is not an accident as no one has confirmed anything. They asked me to sign the incident book.

I work in a nursery so have seen quite a few bumps and bruises over the years. If we see a mark of any kind, we write it up in the accident book and ask the parent to sign it. If we don't know what happened to the child to obtain that mark then that's exactly what we write. This sounds like pretty poor practice and I would definitely be questioning their accident and incident policies.

How old is he? Can he not tell you what happened?

He is still a baby (12MONTHS).

I had similar to this a lot when DD was at nursery. I was often signing an incident report for 'we heard a bang and she started crying, then we saw this bruise'. I moved her to CM

I found bruises come up quite a while after (hours to days)
Maybe they think oh theyve banged themselves but its fine and then later a bruise has come up
