Hmmmm.

I loved the album but went to see her live last week at La Scala at Kings Cross and she was terrible.

Supporting band were a pair of pretty average DJs just recutting some standard tunes. They finished at about 9.15pm... she didn't come on until gone 10.15pm (by which time the crowd was at best discontented, at worst some people were booing). She came on, made some vague apology for being late and then played six, yes just six songs, and then said something along the lines of "thanks London and good night" - everyone was along the lines of, okay, guess it'll be a long encore. But no, lights up, 10.45pm, gig finished. Appalling. The set wasn't that great either - she just rattled through the headline tunes (didn't even do "I'm a Lady"); not coherent at all and just really lacked atmosphere even though I've not seen La Scala so packed for a long time.

Had a look for an apology or something on her website the next day (in case she'd been ill for example), but nothing. Gutting, not least since I'd been banging onto my mate I went with about how great she was!

Technically, she was pretty good, certainly on those songs that demand it, like Les Artistes and Say Aha. On the other hand, and I'm not sure why, her voice didn't have the impact on the crowd which you'd expect from hearing the album (i.e. utterly electrifying). Maybe it was because people were quite pissed off and stroppy by the time she came on, maybe it was because the album is very eclectic and needs a lot of work for it to hang together and come together fluently from a live perspective or maybe her heart wasn't in it. Whatever the reason, her voice wasn't as compelling as I'd thought it would be.
