We've been asked by the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) to find out all about your last pregnancy and discussions around and about contraception.

Please answer this survey - it should only take a few minutes.

It's open to all UK MNers who have been pregnant and had a baby in the last 3 years. We'd like you to think about your most recent pregnancy when answering this survey as we want it to be as up to date as possible.

Everyone who completes the survey and adds their details at the end will be entered into a prize draw where one person will win a £250 John Lewis voucher.

Please note all data is confidential

Me too grasshopper. It saved the bother of discussing the pros and Cons of having three. (actually that's not entirely true -worst week of my life discovering I was pg and knowing dh didn't want any more)
Wouldn't be without my littlest smile

All done! Would love to win obviously...

I thought the doctor and HV who raised the subject of contraception were incredibly insensitive, given that DD was conceived after a lot of heartache, two miscarriages and three lots of IVF. They knew how she'd been conceived yet still had to tick a box to say they had discussed contraception with me. It wouldn't have been so bad if they'd couched the question in a sensitive manner but they didn't. They just said "I have to talk to you about contraception ...."

IShallCallYouSquishy Wed 05-Sep-12 16:12:25

3duracellbunnies Wed 05-Sep-12 16:48:18

Done. Didn't spot the box for sleep deprivation as form of contraception. All the discussions annoyed me too. We had 3 very planned and wanted children, some took a while to come along, by that stage we had worked out where they were coming from. And so what if we hadn't wanted contraception (which was never suggested as an option) we're both adults paying our own way in the world. Wanting another child was never seen as a good answer by any of the health professionals. I think new parents should be offered the opportunity to discuss it, but not have to -lie- tell a health professional what they want to hear just to tick a box.

AmandinePoulain Wed 05-Sep-12 17:32:32

There's no box for "I've heard of bf as a form of contraception but don't believe it works" or "baby only 3 weeks old so no chance" grin

Done! would be interested in how contraception advice differs with age.....

Minty82 Wed 05-Sep-12 19:11:50

Amandine - exactly what I put in the box!

BonnieBumble Wed 05-Sep-12 19:14:19

After being asked by 11 different health professionals after the birth of ds1 about my contraception decisions, I wrote on my notes that I didn't want any advice after the birth of ds2.

I went to the doctors for something completely unrelated to family planning last year and was asked if I was using condoms as there were no notes of prescribed contraception on my file. I told them that I was there because I was having dizzy spells and did not see the relevance of whether or not I was having sex.

I'm almost 40 have two children and no unplanned pregnancies and yet health care professionals are more concerned about the possibility of me having an unplanned pregnancy than the possibility of me having a serious illness.

YY Exactly worldgonecrazy - unless they're deliberately trying to upset a woman who's had trouble conceiving in the past, and may be feeling rather sore and hormonal any way post birth?!

This was my reaction to that chat which is obviously box-ticking at the hospital, with the community mw and the 8wk check with the GP:

Lyftiduft Wed 05-Sep-12 22:58:06

with you on the box ticking- after a 3rd degree tear that required over an hour in theatre to repair, I didn't need to discuss contraception before I left hospital with my newborn, thanks, surely it could wait? Some general sensitivity would be nice- surely my notes say what my delivery was like, so no, GP I don't want a coil fitted when the idea of any medical professional going anywhere near my vagina still makes me shudder and I'm still having flashbacks to the birth of my DS 20 months on sad hmm angry

Done - my midwife at my last booking in appointment was quite put out that I didn't want to be sterilised at the same time as my c section. She's going to be made up to see me yet again early next year then, the old trout grin

COCKadoodledooo Thu 06-Sep-12 03:49:45

Done. I answered based on my successful pregnancy with ds2.
I had a miscarriage at 11weeks into a completely unexpected pregnancy (GP and midwife both fully aware of this aspect of it) earlier this year, no one has discussed or even suggested contraception to me since then. In fact there's been no follow up from any medical professional at all, which I believe is not unusual, but maybe that's a topic for a different survey.

Done, also agree on the lack of 'just too bloody knackered' , or ''DH on the computer until midnight' as contraceptive options! And I wish they'd stop pushing breast feeding as a contraceptive so much, one unexpected pregnancy and subsequent miscarriage later despite DS being surgically attached to my boobs for the first six months!

I also thought that bf as a sole method of contraception was unreliable, but I can't remember if this was suggested to me by someone else or if I just thought it myself.

Marrow Thu 06-Sep-12 23:15:16

I started this but can't complete as there's no option for sterilisation on Q9.

AnnMumsnet (MNHQ) Sat 08-Sep-12 16:10:27

Marrow - sorry about that - you could add it in the "why" box and I will have a fiddle with your data a bit. Anyway may have missed you as I am closing this off soon.

Hello - thanks for all the responses. GirlWithTheMouseyHair is the lucky winner of the £250 JL voucher - well done!
