Let's talk tyres...the team at Michelin would love to know your views and experiences of car tyres. Often overlooked, these are an essential part of any car.

This survey is open to all UK Mumsnetters who have at least one child and who also have at least one car at home.

Everyone who completes the survey will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky winner will get a £250 John Lewis voucher.

Here's the link: www.surveymonkey.com/s/XTX9ZJ6

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

Done - although I think the question about "dealing confidently with a puncture" might have been more specific. I can very confidently pull over and contact a breakdown service to change the wheel! I also am confident that I know how to do it - however, I'm not physically strong/heavy enough to loosen the nuts, which is hugely frustrating.

Completed - and hoping I win because I need to buy a couple of new tyres and could flog the voucher to a family member.

MNHQ, has mine been submitted? I pressed submit but my phone started playing up.

Done. My requirement for choosing a brand wasn't there: in stock. So when I limped to the garage on the space saver spare, I didn't care what type they put on, just one was put on ASAP, so I could get to work at more than 50mph - tyre slashed, and not repairable.

I agree with Hamu about the puncture question, and feel the same.

I also think that the winter tyre question missed some detail: we've thought about them, but it's the storage. In our current house it would be possible but awkward. In our old house it would have been impossible.

I agree too about dealing with a puncture by calling the breakdown service.

And the winter tyres question depends on so many factors. Nearly all our driving is done in the suburbs. If we lived on the Yorkshire moors, we'd probably make a different decision.

I live in London 'proper' and am still thinking about winter tyres (and snow chains) as we live on a steep hill and have witnessed several bad accidents over the past few years.

Last winter was ok, but 2 years ago we just didn't use our car for over a week at one point, as we couldn't be sure we'd get it down (or up) the hill safely.

Completed. Most of my friends wouldn't have a clue on checking tyre pressure or changing a tyre.

Posted too soon!

I learnt from my mechanic Dad but stuff like this can be a life saver to know.

Done, I'm obsessed with tyre pressures. My Ddad generally sorts my punctures out, bless him :)

Done! This has actually reminded me that I need to check my tyre pressures....and that I'm going to need 2 new fronts soon (run flats to so not cheap Sad)

Done. I too could ring the breakdown people very happily and confidently. I would not even consider changing a tyre myself. I know how to do it, but it would be a real struggle for me, I don't have the strength to get the nuts off, and I would want someone to check it for me afterwards.

dh is crap at this kind of thing - its not just a womans job Grin

My car does have a tyre pressure warning light which comes on if there may be any problems - this alerts us to check. So, I tend to rely on this more than anything else. I also tend to consider the driving feel, or the look of my tyres - rather than physically checking.

I have never been able to loosen the nuts on my wheels, so changing one would never come into it. I would call my breakdown service or take the car to a local garage to deal with issues.

DH tends to check the tyre pressure if it ever needs doing. If I had to I am sure I could read the manual and figure it out.

I just had to put two new tyres (run flats) on my car, I did all the research myself and was pleased when my garage recommended the same ones I had chosen. The only advantage to having run flats is that I don't have to worry about changing a flat tyre, I suppose that justifies the price of them!

I must say that that since my ex left I've become far more savvy when it comes to my car and checking tyres, oil levels, water/coolant etc. I have never even practiced changing a tyre and if I didn't have my current car I'd certainly have had to have learnt by now.

Done and I agree about punctures, can do it fine but can't undo the nuts by myself.

Report
prettybird · 24/10/2014 13:02

Agree about the nuts. I know what to do but physically can't do it. Especially given the wee short tyre wrenches that come with the spare wheel - far too short to get an leverage.

I remember once asking the breakdown service to undo the nut slighlty so I'd be able to do it next time: he said there was no point as they are all self-tightening now anyway Hmm

Frankly I should be ashamed of myself, XP went 6yrs ago and dad died 4yrs ago. I still haven't got to grips with this stuff Blush. Punctures is what pay breakdown cover for.

My garage are very good though. They had to fix a headlight in the summer and I mentioned we were about to go on holiday so they said they'd check the tyres for me.

AFAIK our local college runs car maintenance courses but I'd be stuck for a babysitter. Why did I not sort this out when I learnt to drive in my twenties Hmm.
