Looking to improve your lifestyle? UK MNers needed to try The Orb from Fitbug - worth £50 NOW CLOSED

(289 Posts)
MichelleMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 05-Aug-14 09:43:42

We have been asked by the team at to find 50 UK MNers to try The Orb fitness tracker. We're looking for Mumsnetters who are keen to track their fitness levels everyday, those who are embarking on a new fitness plan (maybe trying to lose post baby weight), and those who just want to try out this product.

Fitbug says: "The system sets you personal targets each week for steps and food, helping you improve your lifestyle at a rate you can gradually adjust to, so it’s not a hardcore exercise regime or a diet that you do for a short time, but a way of improving your habits for the long term."

See here for a brief overview.

The Orb is iOS and Android compatible - but check the list of compatible Android handsets here:

If selected, you'll be sent The Orb to try for a few weeks and so long as you add feedback as required you will be able to keep the product. There are no ongoing costs to worry about. You will also be able to download the Fitbug app and get more info on the Fitliving site:

In addition, all MNers who are selected will be given access to one-to-one support at Fitbug for their new gadget, should they need it.

If selected, you will be sent the Orb at the middle of August, and asked to try it for around a month. We're looking for feedback on a thread on Mumsnet twice: once on first impressions, on opening/ first use - on set up/ why you wanted to take part, etc. and then at the end of the month on your overall experiences with it, what you liked about it etc. The second feedback will be early - mid September. Please only apply if you're able to take part and add feedback at these times.
Please also note that Fitbug may use your feedback comments on their website and social media channels, as well as elsewhere.

If you'd like to take part, please add your details here:
We will be in touch with selected MNers ASAP. If you're not selected, please keep an eye out for the feedback thread, as there will be an extra chance to win Fitbug products.

Thanks and good luck!

this is a great product test, fingers crossed grin.

Acolyte Sun 10-Aug-14 23:25:09

I have been looking on eBay at similar products. It'd be great to have a months trial with one before parting with my hard earned!

SaltySeaBird Mon 11-Aug-14 05:45:36

Oh I've looked at their products before and thought they looked great but nobody I asked about it had heard of it before. I'd love to be selected but even if I'm not lucky I'll be watching the review thread with interest!

Jellylove Mon 11-Aug-14 07:20:26

Done survey, hopefully I may get picked

Reniee14 Mon 11-Aug-14 08:23:42

[bites nails] I'm holding out hope until I see the flurry of "thanks for choosing me" posts...
Until then (unless all the people they chose aren't MNers, which would be really unfair) I'll assume the emails haven't been sent yet.

MichelleMumsnet (MNHQ) Thu 14-Aug-14 13:31:32

Thanks to everyone who has signed up. Recruitment has now closed and we'll be in touch with the lucky selected MNers later on today!

Fingers crossed for the rest of the day then!

I got all excited, but the email from MN was just a general news round-uphmm. Why do they always do that?

Ditto InMySpareTime

No email here either, though I was very doubtful I'd be in with a chance of this one as much as I'd have loved it!

ilikeyoursleeves - you will only get an email if you've been selected.

HeySoulSister Thu 14-Aug-14 16:51:49

Still nothing?

ineedausername Thu 14-Aug-14 17:01:25

I wish at least someone would get one so we all know whether we are in or out!

Ilikeyoursleeves Thu 14-Aug-14 17:52:30

Anyone heard yet? I've not, assuming I'm out then since it's past office hours now? Although is the end of the day for mumsnet later than 5pm?!

HalleLouja Fri 15-Aug-14 08:23:50

Nothing here. No one seems to have heard anything. Not counting my chickens.

I keep frantically checking my inbox blush

BiggerYellowTaxi Fri 15-Aug-14 09:00:53

Yes ThePortly, I've also developed a -raging- mild obsession with my email inbox.

SurfBoredCat Fri 15-Aug-14 09:02:51

Another one who keeps checking their inbox!

YeGodsAndLittleFishes Fri 15-Aug-14 09:09:24

No little red star on my inbox, either. [sigh]

HeySoulSister Fri 15-Aug-14 09:48:39

NannyPeach Fri 15-Aug-14 10:08:30

HappyHippyChick Fri 15-Aug-14 10:15:15

I'm in too!! Woo Hoo!

YeGodsAndLittleFishes Fri 15-Aug-14 10:26:58

I have an email too! Thank you MN and Fitbug! smile

<unpacks running kit and longs wistfully for a foreign city to explore on foot again.>

Back to my old stomping ground and work, thanks for the incentive/motivation.

sad not me this time.

HellonHeels Fri 15-Aug-14 10:53:43

I've just had a message to say I'm one of the lucky ones - thank you SO much MN and Fitbug smile

Obfuskate was it you who wondered about being the 'wrong kind of mumsnetter' for these tests? I also don't have children so don't give up.

Really looking forward to trying this - and I didn't realise you got to keep it so thank you again, that is really generous and I'm so grateful thanks

HeySoulSister Fri 15-Aug-14 11:00:50

Ooh thank you thank you thank you!!'

I'm half marathon training again so this is perfectly timed! Maybe we could all have an exercise/support thread to keep us all motivated

IScreamForIceCream Fri 15-Aug-14 11:20:13

Oh you lucky ducks!
No joy for me, so please can you do an honest assessment of the Orb so that us non-chosen few get to know if it's worth it?

Chopstheduck Fri 15-Aug-14 11:35:11

Oooh I got one, so excited!!

I'm hoping to do a triathlon next year, so this will be fab. Thank you mn grin

rookiemater Fri 15-Aug-14 11:44:03

I got an email and I'm in - very excited and exhausted after my first metafit since the school holidays began - so hopefully the orb will give me the inspiration to keep going.

Thank you mumsnet !

HeySoulSister Fri 15-Aug-14 12:16:02

Just been looking at these online and reading up a bit more

I'm very excited now! Wondering why it measures 'sleep' though confused

Also wondering what colour I get! I'm going to guess i will get white

There's pink, black or white

FitByForty Fri 15-Aug-14 12:39:27

One for me too! Yippee!

I'm just in the middle if the C25k training programme so I'm hoping this will keep me motivated.

heymammy Fri 15-Aug-14 13:22:30

Ooh I've been chosen too, thanks so much! I've just been researching these gizmos online and they look brilliant actually. Goal setting, target tracking, sleep monitoring and dietary advice. Can't wait to receive this, I'm at the start of my getting fit campaign so this is perfect timing smile

Ilikeyoursleeves Fri 15-Aug-14 14:19:24

Not me, sob :'( All that was in my inbox was a bill notification from BT (double sob). Well done to the lucky chosen ones!

Dutyfree Fri 15-Aug-14 14:21:20

I'm in too!

So pleased and I hope this can provide the kick up the arse I so desperately need!

Teladi Fri 15-Aug-14 16:10:26

Gutted!! Hadn't heard of the Orb before so looking forward to seeing how the chosen MNetters like it. I had been thinking about getting a Vivofit but if the Orb is good, it could be a winner.

Wow! I've been selected blush

Thanks MN!

SaltySeaBird Sat 16-Aug-14 07:49:20

Damn was really hopeful for this one. I only seem to get lucky on product tests for cleaning products where hundreds of people are needed! Look forward to seeing the feedback as I've been interested in these for a while.

HeySoulSister Sat 16-Aug-14 09:34:01

Anyone's arrived in today's post?

bumpiesonamission Sat 16-Aug-14 10:06:32

Mine has. Is there a review thread yet?

HappyHippyChick Sat 16-Aug-14 10:09:34

Mine arrived, but I'm having trouble setting it up already! Won't let me enter my weight as it needs to be between 85lb and 1200 lb. I do fall within that range!

harderthanitlooks Sat 16-Aug-14 10:33:46

I got chosen yay! not sure how I missed the email. It arrived this morning. I haven't set it up yet, I'm waiting for a child free moment

NannyPeach Sat 16-Aug-14 11:33:43

Mine is here - I have a black one grin.

Problems already though, I have a Nexus 7 and when i go to download app on Google Play, it says 'Your device isn't compatible'?

Apparently you can get a dongle for pc but do I have to buy that?

NannyPeach Sat 16-Aug-14 11:48:17

I would also like the dongle for the PC. Will have to find out about that.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes Sat 16-Aug-14 12:40:53

Mine's arrived and it is black. Took ages to set up and register. (Needed to weigh myself on wi fit which needed charging, then had to go and find a tape measure for waist, then a coin, etc. Then it wouldn't paur and wouldn't recognise my nickname as my username (use email as username).

I think I may naad to adjust the height/step length I have as my 3.3 km run is showing up as less than 2.8km and so I probable need to add a cm to my height to put that right. No idea how to, or if I can.

Also, how to add food eaten/nutrition?

YeGodsAndLittleFishes Sat 16-Aug-14 12:43:01

Yes I want to use it to monitor a health concern unrelated to my heart rate/cholesterol etc so gave up and went for fitness as goal.

heymammy Sat 16-Aug-14 13:00:26's here! 'Tis shocking pink though, won't be wearing it on my wrist that's for sure. Right, about to go and do the app stuff. It's very small isn't it. Doesn't have a 'screen' as such so I'm guessing everything is done through the app.

Can't wait to get started smile

Mine arrived this morning - I got a white one. Its on my wrist. Think I need to adjust the stride as apparently I've only done 20 steps. I've only wandered around the house but I've definitely done more than 20...

bumpiesonamission Sat 16-Aug-14 14:17:05

Set mine up and been for s walk but as it's on my wrist and I pushed the buggy I don't think its accurate. I've tested the contact me page though!!!

Mines white but I wanted a pink one grin grin

NellVarnish Sat 16-Aug-14 17:49:36

Hurrah! It's here! Thank you MN and Fitbug, I need all the help I can get.

Will go and see if I can figure out how to use it - putting off measuring tape and scales. <faints>

HappyHippyChick Sat 16-Aug-14 18:13:24

Has anyone else had trouble with the website using a phone? I can't get it to add any food, the page just goes black and freezes. It would be much better if you could add food using the app.

InculKate Sat 16-Aug-14 19:02:21

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

It's the sleeping bit I'm excited about. My sleep is shite, so I'm intrigued as to what it will say about it.

Having a proper day out tomorrow so hopefully I'll have a better idea of whether or not the steps are accurate. Mine was stuck at 20 for hours, then suddenly leapt to 876.

bumpiesonamission Sat 16-Aug-14 19:27:30

Yep, same problem here with the food diary! So stupid! Off to link with the mfp.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes Sat 16-Aug-14 19:31:52

Yes, I've had to fire up the laptop to add food. As far as that goes, it is much like other nutrition apps, but very annoying not to even have basic food options to add (like portions of fruit; glass of water/juice/tea/coffee; toast/cereal; popular meals, etc.)

NellVarnish Sat 16-Aug-14 20:21:24

I can't even get mine going, grrr. Did all the scales/measuring shriek etc, and inputted that, but app won't recognise my steps or anything. I'm worried it's the bluetooth on my phone and I might have to return it.

Am getting cross now so leaving it until a teenager comes in till tomorrow.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes Sat 16-Aug-14 20:40:30

Nell mine was like that too until I joined/synced the orb (registration) with the phone. It does need bluetooth on for that, can you turn that on?

affafantoosh Sat 16-Aug-14 20:42:55

msFITs had exactly the same problem with my Nexus 7. I've emailed MN and Fitbug. The set up to get to the stage of finding out it won't let me download the app was horrific though, dire website, full of bugs, tablet-unfriendly and huge chunks missing from webpages. It took me about 8 attempts to register as it kept sending me in circles and making me fill in forms again. I'm really disappointed and I haven't even used it yet sad thought this would convenience to healthy living but so far it's been a glitchy PITA.

FFS 11.40pm and I'm still trying to pair it. Completely not happening - tablet can't seem to find it at all. I'm really pissed off now!

I've been trying mine with all of the different types of pairing as I've got it synced with the iPad (for battery sake) and I'm at home). It seems that the option to constantly feedback movement isn't actually so constant - mine seems to give up and go to sleep (or reset to a different form of pairing rather than constantly pushing info?) Whilst it's probably to save battery, it's not what it suggests in the blurb, and it makes it difficult to gauge how well it's working in these initial set up days.

Chopstheduck Sun 17-Aug-14 08:02:41

Mine arrived yesterday too smile

It seemed ok to set up, but it seems to be very slow actually syncing anything. I registered it with the app, but nothing at all synced until I logged in online and even now, it doesn't seem to be streaming very well. It's still stuck on what it was an hour ago.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes Sun 17-Aug-14 08:23:37

Inculkate no, you don't sound like you're bragging (but am vair impressed and want homebrew on my wi too now) sounds as if they sent you a faulty one. At some point (next week? After a week of attempts?) We there should be some Fitbug people helping to iron out problems, so maybe they will help.

Thank you for the running/step adjuster info! I hadn't seen anything about that, will have a look now.

Sleep mode seems to have not worked on mine. I did turn sleep mode on (and off) but it hasn't recorded anything about it (although it might just be being slow). Had to getbup a few times for the loo so wondering if that has affected it.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes Sun 17-Aug-14 08:35:49

Sleep monitoring has updated on mine now. Swipe to the left and there is a little graph showing when I woke up (including waking at half 3 to the cat sitting up beside me, nose to nose, staring right at me!).

FitByForty Sun 17-Aug-14 09:14:11

Mine arrived yesterday too. Nice black one. Not too difficult to set up on the iPhone 5. I'm not one for reading instructions and did have a couple of hiccups ( couldn't get the device to pair up) but got there in the end.
Was frustrated not to be able to set more than one goal. Or a more general goal anyway. I want to lose weight, get fitter and tone up. Seems I want too much grin

However, not sure what I've done wrong with the sleep monitoring as it doesn't seem to have any data at all. I did the 3 fast button presses and got the 5 flashy lights thing so assumed I was all set up when I got into bed last night. But it appears not! Feeling frustrated this morning.

Going for a run in a bit so will see how it deals with that. Am not going to change my stride length as it's more of a shuffle than a run in general anyway!

YeGodsAndLittleFishes Sun 17-Aug-14 09:16:58

So there is a way to actvate stride extender when running, then. It looks about the same level of inconvenience as activating my Runtastic running app (although that also gives me a map and tracks where I run, with elevation, how fast each km is etc. so is worth the extra bother for that. And it's a free app.)

YeGodsAndLittleFishes Sun 17-Aug-14 09:19:25

FitbyForty have you turned the sleep mode off again? Long press until it flashes 5 times). Then it seems to take about an hour to sync the sleep info.

SaltySeaBird Sun 17-Aug-14 09:20:30

I was gutted not to get into this test as I'm on a real fitness drive at the moment - not taking the car and walking a lot more for starters, plus running a lot as I've entered a 10km race at the end of September.

Before I saw the test I knew of the Fitbug Orb and had been thinking about buying one but the early feedback has really put me off! Will be following the rest of the trial with interest.

Mine monitored sleep for 2 hours, until I got up for a wee hmm Going to have to remember to reset it each time I have a wee now!

FitByForty Sun 17-Aug-14 09:43:12

I thought I had YeGods but perhaps not. It's recorded over 1000 steps so far today (I've only been to hang the washing out!) so it should have turned off automatically now. I'll have another check in a bit.

I confess to being a bit of an Apple consumer as I find their technology intuitive and easy to use. First impressions of the Orb are very much neither of these things.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes Sun 17-Aug-14 09:50:11

You do need to turn sleep mode off, it isn't automatic. It still records your steps, even in sleep mode. (It counded my 100 steps trip to the bathroom before I turned it off.)

It also says I fell asleep after 20 minutes last night, when in fact I was still awake for another hour until I went to the loo (it recorded those steps too). So it records sleep as when we tell it we are asleep, which is odd.

affafantoosh Sun 17-Aug-14 10:49:56

Still can't pair it. It's recording that I've burned calories today but I think(on the website - the app is just tumbleweed) that's a resting calorie burn because it's given me no indication that it's paired.

FitByForty Sun 17-Aug-14 10:53:15

Hmmmmm got the sleep data now. It seems about right. Turned on at midnight and off at 9.15 which it probably was by the time I got it sorted. There's a couple if waking bits between 7.15 and 8.30 when I actually got out if bed. The instructions on the website definitely says sleep mode turns itself off after 50 steps if you don't do it manually YeGods

Have just returned from my morning run. MapMyRun gives me 3.8k covered. Orb says 2.45 for the morning so far so quite a bit of difference. Orb says 294 calories burnt versus 380 on MapMyRun. They both have the same data in terms of weight, height etc.

affafantoosh Sun 17-Aug-14 10:56:08

Hmmm. Anyone else really glad they didn't invest in one themselves? I'd be raging if I'd spent fifty quid on this!

affafantoosh Sun 17-Aug-14 10:57:45

Can I just ask - can anyone see the Orb in their list of Bluetooth devices?

YeGodsAndLittleFishes Sun 17-Aug-14 11:29:50

FitByForty thanks, I'd completely missed that on the website (was trying to set up/register just with my phone and was short on time once I finally turned laptop on.) Got emails today about sleep mode saying it switches sleep mode off after 50 steps, as you say. Only it doesn't do that. hmm

YeGodsAndLittleFishes Sun 17-Aug-14 12:18:11

affafantoosh I checked my bluetooth list and clicked on a box next to what I think is my orb. I now have a fitbug icon on my top toolbar and it seems to be constantly updating/streaming/syncing.

bumpiesonamission Sun 17-Aug-14 13:02:12

Can anyone answer a question about the sleep mode. If I activate it when I go to bed and off in the morning. How will it track when I get used to lo although I know it's bang on every hrs?

YeGodsAndLittleFishes Sun 17-Aug-14 13:11:14

How will it track what?

If you are active (e.g. trip to the too) in sleep mode, it just shows as a spike of activity on the sleep graph. If very active (lots of repetitive wrist action, say) you might want to leave the orb on the bedside table, beside the beaker! [hrin]

bumpiesonamission Sun 17-Aug-14 13:39:24

lol at increased wrist action

Ah ok, but it doesn't seem to match up with when I went to feed lo last night?!envy

Right so far I've been able to add what I've eaten to the Food Library using the website on my ipad and navigate around but it still isn't recognising any of my activity even when I push the wee button. So it must recognise my Orb? I don't even know what I'm talking about now. I'm gibbering.

affafantoosh I can't see the Orb in my Bluetooth, I think that's the problem - it looks like this pic:

It's seriously doing my head in as I just want it to START. I've walked miles today. not really grin

NellVarnish Sun 17-Aug-14 17:27:07

Have just sent an email enquiry, hopefully I can get it sorted as it's a cute if frustrating little device.

Maybe there will be a Special Thread tomorrow.

Got home to find mine had arrived yesterday whilst I was away fir the weekend...

Got black which I was pleased about.... Didn't want pink....

Will post properly on thread once it is opened but first impressions good... Bracelet is small enough (just) for me - most watches etc are too big...

Set up app easily on my phone, synced 1st time, updated firmware and it is now working .... Have dabbled with settings on the web site too.... So far so good....

NellVarnish Sun 17-Aug-14 20:40:19

grin Kate

So hamster do you have to update firmware?

I have just managed up sort it out...

My phone was also not running properly so I deleted the app snd unpaired the orb, the reinstalled the app and suddenly the update screen reappeared and it completed the update...

So I have now re-paired it and everything is working again .....

I'm now on 2.8 and it kept my data too grin

bumpiesonamission Mon 18-Aug-14 07:28:24

Interesting, I successfully tracked my sleep last night and it got the disturbed times i.e when lo woke bang on!!

Chopstheduck Mon 18-Aug-14 08:41:58

I'm not convinced by the sleep tracking. I was up quite a bit last night, but it only registered a few minutes awake. Unless you are tossing and turning it doesn't actually know if you are awake or asleep!

I haven't had the technical issues, but I'm still not entirely happy with it atm, will see how it goes.

It isn't streaming automatically, only when I push the button to sync it.

It is very slow updating to MFP, and I can't edit my base calorie level - it is underestimating what I need to maintain! I have high muscle tone, so need quite a bit more than it worked out yesterday. I did sit on my backside most of yesterday though (200 mile drive) and only managed 8k steps so will be interesting to see what it says today, which will be more of a typical day. There really needs to be a sync option somewhere to push the data as required.

I'm def not going near the update after reading the comments on here.

I'm having massive problems with my sleep tracking. As this was one of the points I was most interested in, it's disappointing. The first night, I thought it was my footsteps when I went for a wee (but don't remember it flashing). Last night, it definitely flashed when DS2 got up for a wee in the night, so I reactivated sleep mode when I went back to bed. It definitely reactivated, lights flashed etc, but it hasn't logged my sleep.

I think the sleep should be deactivated by user, not orb. This way is far too inaccurate.

Have reported my post where I said its not working on Nexus7 and could do with a dongle for pc.

Have tried same as affafantoosh, and now have the app showing as working but cant get the orb to link, tried uninstalling & re-installing, nothing happening.

Will wait for answer on dongle.

NellVarnish Mon 18-Aug-14 11:29:38

I've had a couple of speedy replies from Customer Services and followed their instructions but it's still not pairing my Irb with my account. Just waiting for another reply from them to see what to do next.

I'm not being ungratefu, I know I'm lucky to test it, but I'm glad I didn't pay £50 for it as it would've been flung out of a window by now.

Cambam2010 Mon 18-Aug-14 11:47:55

I'm having trouble adding nutrition info. why can't you do everything on the app, why do you also need to go on to the website? or have I got it all wrong?

scousadelic Mon 18-Aug-14 12:02:32

I received mine on Friday but had a busy weekend so am just setting it up today. I am a fat, unfit 50+ technophobe so we'll see how I go but I am really hopeful this will give me the kick in the pants I need to get healthier, thinner and fitter. Thanks MN.

scousadelic Mon 18-Aug-14 12:10:30

Well so far mine is going swimmingly! (Hope that's not tempting fate!)
I have added my breakfast into nutrition with no problems and have just uploaded my activity, which is very little as I have been sitting at my kitchen table catching up with stuff on my computer.

My plan is to carry on this week as normal to see exactly why I am so fat and unfit then start changing things next week. I go on holiday in 3 weeks so am hoping to see some changes even by then

Chopstheduck Mon 18-Aug-14 13:13:14

I feel rather lost atm, which is very unusual for me! There are different figures all over the dashboard.

Apparently after doing 30,000 steps (a gym class, 8 miles on my bike, and usual housework, shopping, etc) I need have burned 2374 today so far.

But on MFP, it still shows as a negative of 970 for exercise :S

Chopstheduck Mon 18-Aug-14 13:19:21

Oh and the app says I have burned 1691!!

Sleep function didn't work last night. Orb didn't flash at all, then flashed incessantly. I fell asleep.

Have not added nutrition for yesterday/today yet as I dont have access to/time for laptop every day.

My firmware won't upgrade. Been trying all afternoon and it's still firmly stuck at 0%

Will have to email customer services later.

Chopstheduck Mon 18-Aug-14 17:28:48

nutrition is a lot easier using My Fitness Pal, and the two will sync, eventually! Seems to be very slow, but it is going through eventually.

rookiemater Mon 18-Aug-14 17:48:06

Picked mine up from the post office today - I have the black one. So far I have to admit I'm a bit underwhelmed - even simple things like getting it set up involving having to go to the website rather than getting full instructions have bugged me (not that I'm not grateful for getting it for free grin).

It also looks very flimsy too with lots of bits and pieces - again not a problem at all as it's free, but I'd be feeling a bit cheated if I had paid for it.

Am waiting for DH to get home before I can start using properly as I need his i-phone or i-pad to use so I need to see which will be the least annoying for him !

scousadelic Mon 18-Aug-14 17:52:23

One facility I would like that I can't find is the ability to hide things on the dashboard. I guard my weight jealously and think DH and DD would die of shock if they knew how much I really weigh, either that or I'd die of embarrassment that they knew. I hate the fact that it is displayed in BIG BOLD numbers which means I will not be able to show anybody the app.

I want to have my weight on it as one of my goals is to lose some but I wish there was a hide thing or a way of choosing what is displayed

HeySoulSister Mon 18-Aug-14 18:18:16

Mines not arrived!

Anyone else still waiting for theirs?

silverlace Mon 18-Aug-14 20:41:11

Not sure how well mine is working. I got up this morning to go to the loo and I then looked at the stats. It said I did 215 steps and had burned 247 calories! The bathroom isn't that far away. It is now saying I have done over 16,000 steps today and burned over 3500 calories. That can't be right can it? I have been sitting atmy desk most of the day.

scousadelic Tue 19-Aug-14 07:16:13

I set mine to sleep at bedtime and was really looking forward to the result as I don't think I sleep brilliantly. Woke up this morning and it says I have slept 0 hours at 0% quality but have walked 519 steps! So that's why I feel knackered! grin

YeGodsAndLittleFishes Tue 19-Aug-14 07:35:58

sousadelic you could just put the weight you have told your DD/DH you are on the app and still aim to lose weight. But better to be honest about it and accept it.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes Tue 19-Aug-14 07:38:29

silverlace are you wearing your orb on your wrist? You could try putting it in a pocket.

affafantoosh Tue 19-Aug-14 08:08:28

Nexus 7 people apparently my Nexus is a 2012 version (who knew? I'm blaming DH who told me it was a 2013 one) and that's why it won't work. I'm being sent a dongle so I can use it with my laptop.

I've also politely expressed to the nice customer service person that I'm glad I didn't pay £50 for this ...

affafantoosh Tue 19-Aug-14 08:24:59

I should add that I'd feel much guiltier if it wasn't for you lot all having a nightmare anyway wink

UpFitNow Tue 19-Aug-14 08:27:53

Excited when I saw the chance to test a fitness 'thing'. Been considering something for a few months but no idea what to go for. So it was a bit like Xmas when the postman arrived with a parcel.
First impressions were very good - it looked very modern (black one). Was about to out the door for a short run (part of the new fitness campaign) so decided to set it up when I got back.
Set it up on ipad mini and attached the orb to my wrist.
Attempted to look at the video of how to use but kept coming up with Server problems so just played about with it myself.
Impressed that I could add on food and it would give me all round health updates - so I logged the food that I had so far.
The next day I attempted to log what I'd eaten the previous night and then I realised something...I could not find how to amend a previous day. This was only after getting very frustrated with the App and then realising I could not do anything via the App (you can only look at it) and had to log into my account online.
Then the next issue hit me - attempted to log a slice of bread and an egg - simple you'd think - especially as I've regularly used MyFitnessPal in the past. However it only shows food in terms of grams. So without trekking to the kitchen (which would increase my steps!) to check the packaging I did not know how many grams in a slice of bread or in the egg - whereas MFP gives the cals for the bread and egg automatically. So I decided that it would be too big a faff to record food on the Orb.
First full day and regularly was looking at how many steps I'd taken - it seemed high first thing - I'd only been up about half hour - so I walked around the house and took 60 steps in about 90 seconds and then refreshed the app - it showed that I had just done over 1000 steps. Hmmmm!!
So I've now attached to belt and see how that goes.

scousadelic Tue 19-Aug-14 08:29:14

I'm a bit confused about something (technical idiot here!) and wondered if somebody technically competent could advise me. I have the app on my phone but it just displays stuff and I am entering info on my laptop.

In a couple of weeks I am going on holiday and won't be taking a laptop with me. What do I do? Can I do anything from the phone? Or a tablet? I have a Kindle Fire I could take. Or could I access it from a friend's computer? If so how?

Chopstheduck Tue 19-Aug-14 08:51:18

I'm using MFP to log the food, which can be done via app, and will sync across to Fitbug.

the mobile site on a phone isn't too bad neither, to add exercise - so you don't really need a laptop. I've not even tried logging food on it though. I will stick with MFP as I have been using that a couple of years already, it has a good app, and it is a lot more user friendly going on the comments on here!

Chopstheduck Tue 19-Aug-14 08:53:43

I really don't like the way that fitbug starts with negative calories and slowly increases during the day. First thing in the morning it is syncing to MFP with -970 calories based on a rate of 482 base level which is absurdly low. I don't understand why it doesn't just start with a normal base level.

harderthanitlooks Tue 19-Aug-14 08:55:28

I'm glad its not just me having trouble with the fitbug I keep loosing the data and it seems quite inaccurate. I "borrowed" my husbands fitbit and used both the fit bit gave me about 600 more steps. I'm not impressed so far.

harderthanitlooks Tue 19-Aug-14 08:58:37

I made sure that both the Fitbit and Fitbug had the same data. I'm glad I didn't spend £50 on this.

Sleepytea Tue 19-Aug-14 09:12:32

Soul sister, I'm still waiting...

stealthsquiggle Tue 19-Aug-14 09:50:06

Ok, so I have finally unboxed mine and set it up. I am definitely a novice user compared to a lot of you as I have no previous experience of food trackers/ exercise gadgets at all. So can someone tell me, other than pure masochism (given the experiences reported here) why would I want/need to update the firmware?

YeGodsAndLittleFishes Tue 19-Aug-14 10:23:39

How are you lot using MFP to log nutrition? How do I sync MFP with the orb? The only Fitbit thing on the list is a itbit air tracker which I don't have (looks expensive).

Chopstheduck Tue 19-Aug-14 10:30:59

It's fitbug, this link should hopefully work -

MichelleMumsnet and affafantoosh, they are sending me a dongle for my laptop too.

My Nexus 7 must be 2012 too.

mnistooaddictive Tue 19-Aug-14 11:00:18

I've been using mine for a couple of days, it is much easier now DH has set it up to sync from MFP. It would be much easier if Fitbug let you enter food on the app. Sleep tracking isn't great as it has me asleep when I know I was awake. The app really is very limited. I like the concept and am looking forward to the advice next week.

NannyPeach Tue 19-Aug-14 13:29:51

Ooh I need a dongle - also seem to be using wrong device. Do I contact customer services about this?

rookiemater Tue 19-Aug-14 13:34:03

Ok yay so I now have it set up on DH's i-pad, have also downloaded the app on my old apparently non compatible i-phone so we'll se if that works.

Not looking forward to food logging - i find MFP tedious enough compared to the WW app so I will try to link them.

So far I'm not massively impressed. I can measure steps using my omron pedometer which cost around £15 and my heart rate and calorie count using my heart rate monitor, I'm hoping that the sleep mode thing will be useful.

Dutyfree Tue 19-Aug-14 13:51:04

I'm still waiting too...

Hopefully tomorrow!

littleducks Tue 19-Aug-14 13:58:19

I got hot pink.

Tried to set it up today on my phone (S4) using the Android app. A bit of a disaster tbh. The screen won't show all the options and I end up getting stuck.

Hope it gets better. I was really looking forward to this.

littleducks Tue 19-Aug-14 14:04:06

I keep getting this:

YeGodsAndLittleFishes Tue 19-Aug-14 14:17:37

inculcate the first time mine came out of sleep mode, it flashed green 5 times (I think). The second day it didn't work and the light just stayed on for a bit when I pressed the button. The third day it also went on for a bit when i pressed it, but it did come out of sleep mode at that point (or could have been because I got out of bed again around that point.)

I'm going to need week to get used to using this.

Chopsthe Duck thank you! I am trying that connects the websites-viewed-on-the-phone but doesn't affect the fitbug app. Have tried syncing and added food to MFP before and after to see if it works.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes Tue 19-Aug-14 14:19:09

littleducks could be because phone battery is low, or not in range of wifi?

littleducks Tue 19-Aug-14 14:26:34

NellVarnish Tue 19-Aug-14 15:45:58

affafantoosh and Michelle - latest update from Customer Service below via email:

Unfortunately these devices do not have Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy. Your iPhone is a 4 and your iPad is a 2. The dongle which I have sent you will allow you to upload on a PC or a Mac computer.

So I'm being sent a dongle too. My phone is actually a 4s which was one of the compatible ones on the original questionnaire to apply for the trial. I might be wrong my brain is scrambled from trying to set the thing up, but I'm sure it didn't ask any questions about Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy.

This is something the Fitbug team might want to look at I think, as if I'd been an ordinary customer buying one on the internet using an iPhone 4S, I'd assume compatibility and not even think of the Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy part.

Maybe it's written in the small print somewhere.

Anyway will let you know when the dongle arrives and how that goes. Seems to defeat the purpose if you can't just press the button on the Orb to update steps etc., though and have to faff around with a dongle and a laptop /PC.

These are constructive comment by the way, MN and Fitbug, not me moaning much. grin

NellVarnish Tue 19-Aug-14 15:46:50

Mine didn't track sleep - which is a tad annoying as it's the only feature that would have been additional to my existing pedometer and the ability to track calories through MFP - feel so bad, I wanted to love this product as it was free, but I'm just not getting it.

mnistooaddictive Wed 20-Aug-14 09:23:43

yesterday I had a massive number of steps which I very much doubt is true! Something like 7km which I think I would have noticed! Don't know if it picks up steps when I drive?

BiggerYellowTaxi Wed 20-Aug-14 09:27:25

You're all making me feel a teensy bit better that I didn't get picked. Thanks grin

rookiemater Wed 20-Aug-14 09:32:38

mnistooaddictive - I use a pedometer and the fit bug is recording way more steps than that. Although today I have apparently not walked any, despite my pedometer recording 387 so far confused.

If you read upthread there is a way to adjust stride length, but it didn't work for me.

HellonHeels Wed 20-Aug-14 10:32:48

I've got mine now! Brought it to work to see if I can get it set up when I take a break.

Must admit I am dreading it a bit after reading some of the reports on the set up woes.

HellonHeels Wed 20-Aug-14 16:19:42

Initial impressions:

Looks a bit flimsy, sorry. I got the white one which looks as if it's going to get very grubby looking quite quickly. I like the variety of ways to attach it to yourself but I'm not convinced about the little strap - not certain that would record steps properly.

My set up process worked fine; I have done the health questionnaire (a bit simplistic unless you are starting from zero on knowledge of health issues).

Haven't looked at the food tracking yet. I use the weightwatchers tracker so learing another system might be an effort but I'll have a go when I'm back from hols next week.

I really loathe watching videos so the video support for set up and use is a major interest-killer for me. Maybe I am just not a visual learner. Anyway it's working OK so far without having to watch any videos!

I used my PC to set it all up, would have been fiddly on the phone but the app appears to be working fine so far. I'll clip it on and see how I do on the way home.

Chopstheduck Wed 20-Aug-14 16:41:28

mine crashed earlier, and went back to zero steps today. I think it lost the mornings data, because I have been on my feet for most of the past 7 hours but it reckons I have only done 122 minutes of walking.

TBH I am at the point now, where if I had paid for it, I would want my money back.

rookiemater Wed 20-Aug-14 16:56:02

Managed to get the sleep data through DH's i-pad. My ancient ye olde i-phone is not compatible, but managed to log steps yesterday so I thought it would be ok. Sleep data seems a bit rubbish - it logged the hours I had switched to sleep mode and said my sleep was of 99% quality, which seems unlikely as I was up once in the night to go to the loo, and also moved around a bit.

I did manage to adjust my stride though using the i-pad and that was easy. However I would say I'm fairly average at 5ft6 so it seems weird that the default setting is for a very small stride.

Is there an official thread to report our feedback on mumsnet?

YeGodsAndLittleFishes Wed 20-Aug-14 17:17:23

I used the stride adjuster thing for my run today and it seems to have worked ok. It took a couple of goes to turn it off as I kept getting a green light and had to press and hold longer for an orange light. Seems to be updating better now.

It does seem to be quite a lot of faffing about, but will stick it out for the full month at least to get a good overview.

My sleep is still odd. It says I woke up at 10 today (I woke up at 8) - it has me "briefly" waking at 8 but going back to sleep. I must have been very relaxed doing breakfast grin

I'm getting sent another as the firmware won't update, and think I'm getting a dongle too as I'm on iPad mini and iPhone 4s - both of which I thought would work when I signed up.

I also don't think the pedometer is accurate in the slightest.

NellVarnish Wed 20-Aug-14 23:39:59

Did you see the other thread in Product Tests for first impressions? Left some feedback earlier. Hope my dongle I hate that word, sounds DIRTY arrives soon.

The website is terrible :/

msFITs Thu 21-Aug-14 09:26:06

Got my dongle but cant get it to work confused, but fortunately have managed to 'borrow' a friends compatible smartphone and that's working.

Will go to look for 'official' feedback thread now.

I loved your essay post Kate grin, it was very well thought out. I have found my Fitbug great but I have never had any gadget like this before, not even a pedometer and have never used a calorie or fitness tracker so suspect I am using it at a much more basic level than most people.

I have inputted my food data but I am following a low carb diet which looks like it is horrendous on this! I also am a bit bemused by the fitness data. I went to my personal trainer this morning so did an hour of mixed exercises (squats, lunges, weights, crunches, etc) but the exercises to add come in a minimum of 15mins where I am doing little bits of each

All in all, if they interpret the data we put in I'll be the one who looks like a butter-mainlining-slug!

Hi - can anyone help me with who to email for the dongle? I can't get my fitbug to work with my iPhone 4S and am struggling with finding someone to contact. Thanks!

Chopstheduck Fri 22-Aug-14 08:09:29

Mine doesn't seem to have synced at all with MFP yesterday and so still shows -970 calories in my diary. I am getting very frustrated with this now! I really think we could do with a rep from Fitbug to help us address all the issues we have all been having. I don't think anyone has not had problems with it.

scousadelic Fri 22-Aug-14 13:05:03

Kate Yes that is one of my concerns, there is no facility to allow for eating healthily but differently ( although it has made me wonder if I should cut down on the fat!)

Ilikeyoursleeves Fri 22-Aug-14 22:10:05

Just read through some posts and I'm glad I didn't get chosen now! To make up for my disappointment I actually decided to buy something similar and got the Fitbit One and I have to say, it's excellent! So if any of you want an alternative that actually works, I'd recommend the fitbit one. Looking forward to reading the Orb reviews too though, it might get better.

Chopstheduck Sat 23-Aug-14 09:44:24

Falied to record sleep AGAIN

synched -1937 calories to MFP, despite telling me in the dashboard that I had burned 3800 yesterday (on the go all day and road biking).

Sorry, but I really do think now that it is a waste of £50 and I am really unhappy with it. No response from fitbug neither, so not overly impressed with their customer relations neither.

msFITs Mon 25-Aug-14 17:38:15

NannyPeach I emailed Fitbug explaining that I was a mumsnet tester.

Don't be too hopeful, I've not got the dongle to work.

HeySoulSister Mon 25-Aug-14 17:42:14

So far mine is working perfectly. So far!!

redandyellowbits Wed 03-Sep-14 12:08:35

Today I have done the school run (in car) and then been on a run (interval running for 40mins), and my fitbug says I've done 9,000 steps already. This doesn't seem right to me - it seems way too high - can anyone advise? Anyone counted their steps and had a similar morning? I'm not really getting on with my fitbug at all, not finding it very user friendly at all.
