(249 Posts)
AnnMumsnet (MNHQ) Fri 25-Oct-13 15:13:14

We've been asked by the team at Samsung to find 20 (v lucky) MNers to try out its latest handset - the Galaxy S4 Active and to add feedback on Mumsnet.

Samsung says "We think this new handset would be great for parents. The Samsung Galaxy S4 Active is specifically designed to handle all aspects of modern family life - including

~ the great outdoors - with a fully sealed design that provides great protection from dust and water - you can even use the device to shoot photos and video underwater, with your results optimised by the new Aqua Mode.

~ everyday family life - we'd love you to report back on how the handset withstands your general day to day life with a child we'll be asking testers to 'allow' it to be dropped on the floor, 'eaten' by your LOs, and even 'accidentally' dropped in the bath/ (clean) loo to demonstrate how well it copes with modern family life.

~ looks and functionality - the Galaxy S4 Active also shares the Galaxy S4s slick design and useful smart services, so you can enjoy the same great style and convenience"

Full tech spec here

This new handset will be supplied unlocked for use on any network (just insert your sim) - the costs of calls/ texts/ data must be borne by testers. The handset retails for c£400 grin.

If you're selected to take part you'll be asked to try out the handset (including some challenges!) and to add feedback at least twice on Mumsnet - we'll be looking for first impressions as well as some follow up feedback after a couple of weeks.

We'll also need you to add a review to the MN smartphones review pages
and on the Samsung pages

If you'd like to take part and can commit to adding feedback as above please add your details here

We'll be in touch with those selected asap

thanks and good luck

OMG I have wanted this phone ever since it was announced!!

Am guessing it is UK only though? sad

FudgeyCookie Fri 25-Oct-13 15:33:08

Entered! Would love this phone but really can't afford to buy it outright! Love the idea of the protection parts of the phone and would love love love to try it please! grin

CookieLady Fri 25-Oct-13 15:35:25

Wonder if the phone is as good as they say it is?

I've entered. 8 month old DS2 likes to chew on my phone when his teeth are playing up, I'm sure he'd love the chance to put teeth marks in a shiny new phone.

MuffCakes Fri 25-Oct-13 16:06:31

Fingers are crossed

startalloveragain Fri 25-Oct-13 16:07:20

<unique selling point> grin

In my quest to prove myself as a tough apple nut to crack I forgot to mention that I will, of course, let the kids wee on it/eat it/hide it in god dishwasher etc etc. smile

The dishwasher, not God's dishwasher. I can't promise that...

Towanda Fri 25-Oct-13 21:37:55

I'm trying to apply but when I click it takes me to a page that can't be displayed and when I C&P the address in the link, it takes me to I might be doing something wrong?

NameOfTheNick Fri 25-Oct-13 21:38:43

Me me me, my current samsung has by some miracle lived through being dunked in the toilet so would be amazing to try the s4 active to see how it goes up against my toddler and our active lifestyle.

Didn't work for me either, had to type it out.

LegoCaltrops Fri 25-Oct-13 21:40:03

Aaargh! Can't open the entry form! I don't know if it's not working or if it's ... just my stupid phone. (how ironic!) grin Will try on the PC tomorrow.

Towanda Fri 25-Oct-13 21:42:00

That worked! Thank you GML!

iantoscoffeecup Fri 25-Oct-13 21:53:06

Entered...doubtful as I have only managed to get chocolate in the last 12 months. But this would give me a great excuse to try something other than my iPhone. smile

I have entered - I hate my current phone, it is horrible and would do almost anything for a new one grin so this is a lovely chance to get one that is hopefully nice.

LegoCaltrops Fri 25-Oct-13 22:10:48

FallingInBloodIsHardOnMeeeee Fri 25-Oct-13 23:16:20

It's doing the same for me, I'm trying to enter again because I don't know if my first try went through or not but it isn't working!

Paleodad Fri 25-Oct-13 23:18:10

Entered. I would love to be picked! Does it make any difference if you have been picked in a recent MN competition? in, would it be seen to be unfair if I got picked again?

AnnMumsnet (MNHQ) Sat 26-Oct-13 10:01:27

Sorry - link now working above!

mylovelymonster Sat 26-Oct-13 10:57:31

My old phone has just died and am considering getting a smartphone to replace but have no clue which one or how to choose, so this trial would be perfect for me. I also have two children of 7 & 4 who are ipad aware (BIL) so would be good for them to join in too (under supervision).
I have also just given up work so would have time to test thoroughly.

Please put my name in the hat. MLM

milk Sat 26-Oct-13 13:53:22

I hope I get it... my Nokia 1100 is looking sad sad

bludgerwitch Sat 26-Oct-13 13:54:28

ScoutJemAndBoooooooooooo Sat 26-Oct-13 21:20:35

WhatABeautifulPussy Sat 26-Oct-13 21:34:25

sanityisamyth Sat 26-Oct-13 22:47:04

I have a galaxy S4 and really wish I didn't. The battery is useless and keeps cutting out. It has swelled up and is actually pushing the screen outt of the front of the phone. It has to be permanently plugged in to be of any use.

I wish I could have my iPhone back :'(

DoItTooJulia Sat 26-Oct-13 22:52:02

Sanity, not sure that's the way to get a replacement! wink

sanityisamyth Sun 27-Oct-13 01:01:30

It's a well known fault - need to send it back to o2 to get it sorted sad

Dillydollydaydream Sun 27-Oct-13 02:46:44

Looks good. Would love to try the underwater camera feature!

Fingers crossed.

Strawberrykisses Sun 27-Oct-13 07:40:01

Am I too late? Entered anyway!

SilveryMoon Sun 27-Oct-13 07:52:04

Just added my details.
I have the galaxy s3 and am not overly impressed. Mine keeps freezing, but I know loads of people who are really happy with theirs.
want to try out the s4 before upgrade time so i can decide whether it's galaxy again or iphone

rupert23 Sun 27-Oct-13 08:44:10

looks great and my teenage children would be very jealous of me if i got to trial it

SaltySeaBird Sun 27-Oct-13 09:06:02

I'm crossing fingers on this test. My ancient iPhone (the really old one) has all but given up the ghost and as we have a very active, outdoors lifestyle I think this phone sounds perfect!

BooMeowson Sun 27-Oct-13 09:38:33

My phone is 3 years old and dying - this would be great timing!

telsa Sun 27-Oct-13 09:57:04

This would be a brave new world for me!

FromGirders Sun 27-Oct-13 10:10:10

Oh wow. A phone which I might actually not be able to kill. I seem to go through them rather fast :-S
Have entered!

MegGriffin Sun 27-Oct-13 17:06:52

isitme1 Mon 28-Oct-13 09:05:34

The phone sounds like amazing.

HoneyDragon Mon 28-Oct-13 09:28:52

choccyp1g Mon 28-Oct-13 09:42:50

Have wanted one of these ever since seeing the ads for the photos you can take. and my current phone is almost dead, so fingers crossed.

isitme1 Mon 28-Oct-13 10:01:51

Forgot to add
Dp galaxy note was accidentally dropped by ds and the screen cracked.
Still is.
Would love to see how thw active copes.
Sounds like the ultimate family friendly phone!

vincenta Mon 28-Oct-13 10:17:59

Done! I love Samsung phones! To my mind they are best phone available on the market(were, are and will be smile))))I loved My Samsung phones when they weren't smart phones and now like my Samsung galaxy Ace too. Unfortunately I can use so many apps as me and my 4.5 years son would like.Better camera and video would be so useful and to be honest this underwater video ?!!? That's something amazing!Would love to try! I also should add that I really envy those with big screen phones as it is more nicer to browse web smile
Hope we are lucky!

knackeredmom Mon 28-Oct-13 10:45:06

would love this! Have 2 very technology destructive kids

Primrose123 Mon 28-Oct-13 11:01:23

I've applied!

sharond101 Mon 28-Oct-13 20:27:29

I am crossing my fingers for this one. I so need a new phone it caused tears today. DS is getting restless in his pram (17mo) and music from my phone is all that will let me get the dog out. He puts it in his mouth though and sound is muffled because speaker is thus kapput. also screen is cracked bug time. I dialled the wrong number today and couldn't hang up because the cracked screen occluded my pressing the end call button. That and the two hour battery life is doing my head in.

isitme1 Mon 28-Oct-13 20:30:13

MNHQ when do we find out

Georgethesmartestgiant Tue 29-Oct-13 07:28:43

Hope we hear soon < overly excited >

ScoutJemAndBoooooooooooo Tue 29-Oct-13 07:37:35

I hope we find out soon, I am very excited and hopeful.

Willemdefoeismine Tue 29-Oct-13 08:18:31

I must be very sad as this would make my year...such a technology dinosaur and need to mod-up blush

I'm not getting my hopes up. I'm still smarting over the day on a cruise ship which I was absolutely perfect for!

bludgerwitch Tue 29-Oct-13 08:49:27

I know, me too - my old phone is dying, it'd be so easy to replace it with just the new version but I don't really want to do that, I want to try something new!

And I could do with a rugged phone, too much playing on beaches in bad weather for delicate technology to fare well!!!

glastohead Tue 29-Oct-13 11:09:05

Another awesome trial from mumsnet.

Looking forward to reading feedback (and hopefully battle testing phone with my tiny tearaways!!)

sharond101 Tue 29-Oct-13 12:05:40

please, please, please, I really am begging now!

isitme1 Tue 29-Oct-13 12:09:29

Thanks MNHQ and Samsung!

My ancient iPhone is on its last legs, with no prospect of getting another.

I was going to do outdoor storm photos on it and post them up.

SilveryMoon Tue 29-Oct-13 17:17:07

Nothing here either.
Look forward to reading the reviews

ScoutJemAndBoooooooooooo Tue 29-Oct-13 17:44:49

Sadly nothing here either, I would have had such fun with it too hmm

OYBBK you certainly bloody deserved one after the last few days. For services to weather updates and safety of MNetters you should have got a flippin' phone!

vincenta Tue 29-Oct-13 19:03:40

Oh no. no email for me...
For those who are more lucky than me: Have a lot of fun testing your new phone!!! smile

Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Tue 29-Oct-13 19:17:15

Me neither sad I look forward to reading the feed back ready for my upgrade.

smile Gwendoline.

SinisterMatic Tue 29-Oct-13 19:33:38

Well done lucky ones!

I am in... So happy and grateful, my old phone died at 11am!! Really pleased that I don't have to worry about replacing it on contract. Thanks Samsung and Mumsnet!

darksparrow Tue 29-Oct-13 20:01:37

Lots of screams of joy in this house too!!

ScoutJemAndBoooooooooooo Tue 29-Oct-13 21:00:13

I even checked my spam folder, hoping that my winner's mail had gone astray sad but no joy.

alemci Tue 29-Oct-13 21:24:54

thanks so much. will it take sim card from my old phone if it is on monthly contract but not locked into deal on handset.

Rishi79 Tue 29-Oct-13 21:39:35

Not sure.. whether my application was in sad seems too late to check. Hope to get a surprise e-mail tomorrow when i wake up smile

androbbob Tue 29-Oct-13 21:41:06

I am in and finding it ridiculously exciting! Just hoping I dont have to travel miles to collect if from whichever depot it will get left at! I hate the Nokia work have given me to use and as I work outside and prone to dropping stuff (esp. phones) I hope it lives upto its claims!

alemci Tue 29-Oct-13 21:45:12

won't they post phones to us?

alemci Tue 29-Oct-13 21:45:13

won't they post phones to us?

DoItTooJulia Tue 29-Oct-13 22:01:16

They said they'd post it out, I think that andro means that depot where you're post gets left if you're not in to receive it?

alemci Tue 29-Oct-13 22:16:12

yes hopefully they will come this week.

TheYamiOfYawn Tue 29-Oct-13 23:38:08

I got selected, and am very very excited.

LegoCaltrops Wed 30-Oct-13 06:49:26

Congratulations to all who have got this. Am very jealous! envygrin

BerstieSpotts Wed 30-Oct-13 07:30:29

Congrats! :D Now I just have to save up £400 to buy one... grin <never going to happen>

Indith Wed 30-Oct-13 19:25:52

Wow! I'm in! Very excited but slightly worried I won't be able to work out how to use half the shiny features. Oh well sure the dcs will work it out for me. Ds2 is going to be thrilled, I usually try to stop him from throwing my phone in the bath rather than encourage him to try it out.

androbbob Wed 30-Oct-13 21:46:34

DoItJulia is correct - they will be posted out to us, but if you are out then you usually have to go miles away to collect parcels. Wonder if it will arrive before the weekend??

MoogDroog Wed 30-Oct-13 22:08:30

I'm so excited I'm getting a bit impatient - do hope they arrive before the weekend! Do you think they'll let us know when they're on the way?

Been reading up - sound amazing! grin

DoItTooJulia Thu 31-Oct-13 20:14:14

Moog, I've been emailed to say its coming tomorrow via special delivery!!

How exciting! It's great timing, we are off to waterworld at the weekend, so might get chance to take an underwater shot or two!

Thanks MNHQ and Samsung!

bludgerwitch Thu 31-Oct-13 20:19:05

Mine is thankfully being shipped to my MiL, we're getting the keys to our new house tomorrow and then going up to hers on Saturday, hopefully my new SIM will be there by then.

Indith Thu 31-Oct-13 20:20:36

I'm going out tomorrow but thankfully dh is working from home. Look forward to playing this weekend!

Wonder how I get all my contacts off my current phone and on to the new one........

alemci Thu 31-Oct-13 21:22:29

can you put your current sim on a contract in new phone automatically or do you ring your provider. I only use phone and texts on current one.

Yay I've been chosen as a tester! smile got an iphone at the minute though so not going to be able to copy my contacts over. I'm so excited grin

Alemci you can shove it in, but if you have a normal sim you might need to get it cut to a micro-sim which is dead easy if you have a phone stall where you live - they have special shaped cutters that trim the excess plastic.

Indith Fri 01-Nov-13 07:19:37

oh no do you need a micro sim? balls, I live in the sticks. I was in town yesterday!

MoogDroog Fri 01-Nov-13 07:41:46

Was coming on hear to say that I'd spotted the microsim problem - I'm heading to town today (in the sticks also), and apparently Vodafone will swap it over if you take it in to the shop.

Of course, heading into town (which I need to do anyway) will no doubt mean that I miss the postie... sad

LittleRobots Fri 01-Nov-13 07:43:50

Aw I so wanted to win this!

DoItTooJulia Fri 01-Nov-13 09:15:59

It's here! It's lovely!!

Just putting my sim in and charging it up!

alemci Fri 01-Nov-13 09:52:54

mine arrived at 7 a.m.

I am right in thinking I need to provide my own sim card.

had to order a new sim as my phone is old and want to keep n.o.

doing a £10.50 a month package with 1gb of data. not locked in. is there a cheaper way of doing it paying as you go. any ideas?

TheYamiOfYawn Fri 01-Nov-13 10:37:31

I'm charging mine up at the moment. It is lovely. Rather alarmingly big.

How has it been sent? Courier or Royal Mail? Couriers can't get to my house...

BerstieSpotts Fri 01-Nov-13 10:45:16

You can cut a normal sim card down with scissors but you do run the risk of damaging the sim card.

BerstieSpotts Fri 01-Nov-13 10:49:55

As long as you don't cut the chip itself though, and are sure of the shape it needs to be - I think you can get templates online or just use the sim tray itself if it comes out (like on an iPhone) you'll be fine. Be warned, some SIM cards (older ones) have a larger chip about 1cm across. The newer ones have a much smaller chip about 0.5 x 0.7cm. DON'T try to cut the 1cm square ones as they're too big. You need to contact your network to get a new SIM card. I'm not sure when the change was but it was in the past few years, not too recently. Most people will be fine unless you've had the same sim card for years and years and years.

TheYamiOfYawn Fri 01-Nov-13 14:25:25

Am posting from it. I took my sim to the Three mobile shop and they cut my sim down.

magentastardust Fri 01-Nov-13 14:47:45

No sign of mine yet! Impatient bah.

Mine arrived! Hadn't realised I needed a micro sim so now have to wait another 24 whole hours before I can use it though! Soooooo frustrating!

Mine is here too, I have twitchy fingers but like others need to get my existing sim cut down, plus I want to get an adapter so I can still use it in my current phone if necessary.

Had a wee fiddle with the things it can do without a sim in and OMG it is fancypants shock

magentastardust Fri 01-Nov-13 15:30:15

I don't think mine is coming today! I want to play.

MoogDroog Fri 01-Nov-13 15:38:41

Mine is here! Posting from it now (must stop it doing tappy noise). Missed the delivery but picked it up from sorting office.

Its beautiful! Very big and swanky and I can see myself in a state of confusion for some days whilst I get used to it.

magentastardust Fri 01-Nov-13 15:49:34

Which courier company was it everyone? I am in North East Scotland which loads of courier companies say is in the highands (it is not at all) so take days to deliver!

Royal Mail special delivery smile

magentastardust Fri 01-Nov-13 16:29:03

Oh that should have come then ! Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

MoogDroog Fri 01-Nov-13 16:42:10

Don't suppose anyone has sussed out how to get contacts off an iPhone and onto this lovely thing yet?

<scratches head>

darksparrow Fri 01-Nov-13 16:54:10

Mine came Royal Mail special delivery with the normal post man at the usual post delivery time - in a jiffy bag and not massive.

Moon - can you save to your SIM? If not this should help

TheYamiOfYawn Fri 01-Nov-13 17:24:04

Oooh. It seems very nice indeed. I have spent the afternoon loading up my apps and organising them. I am not convinced that it is as rugged and sturdy as is claimed as it doesn't seem all that different from a standard galaxy apart from the seal, but it is a very nice phone. I like the big keyboard with the numbers.

MoogDroog Fri 01-Nov-13 17:43:04

I think its going to kill me to drop it in the floor! Its too precious!

I'm still very confused by it, but thats more the ios to android switch I think. I dont cope well with phone adjustments confused

Excuse the rubbish typing!

emblosion Fri 01-Nov-13 18:03:11

Mines here! It's SO BEAUTIFUL. I'm another one that has had the same giant sim card forever but the network are posting me out a new one. I'm stamping my feet with impatience to get testing.

I don't know how I will be able to bring myself to drop it either!

Indith Fri 01-Nov-13 19:24:53

well I may not have my sim in it yet but im sorting out aps and swttings etc over the wireless. sort of fun, sort of frustrating.

emblosion Fri 01-Nov-13 20:29:11

I'm having a good play over the wireless too. Really love the keyboard and the big screen.

YeahBuddy Fri 01-Nov-13 20:37:16

Posting from mine now, I don't know how I'm ever going to be able to put it in water though - I'm way too paranoid!!!

MellowMarshmallow Fri 01-Nov-13 21:37:15

It's so pretty, I'm scared to touch it. I've broken my current phone 3 times in 10 months. Have ordered screen protectors and drop proof case. I know it's meant to be rugged, but if I had spent £400 on a phone, I would be happy to spend another £10 protecting it, so think I am sticking to what a real customer would do.

Me too Mellow - I've got a boingy rubber case, screen protectors, and a flip case all on the way! Its just so.... shiny.

DP wants me to let him touch it shock His track record with phones makes me feel it'd be safer in the hands of my 3 yr old (affectionately known as DestructoBoy).

androbbob Fri 01-Nov-13 23:09:32

Stamps feet with impatience - mine is sitting less than a mile away in the PO sorting office. it opens at 7am in the morning, so I will be there as soon as I can rally the troops! I have a small sim so should be able to just get up and go....can't wait! Also have family up at my parents this weekend and footie match to go to, so will be well tested by little people and rain this weekend.

MoogDroog Fri 01-Nov-13 23:18:58

Anyone care to do a link the the cases and screen protectors they've got? I get so bamboozled with choice!

Andro - that must be so frustrating. I only just managed to catch the sorting office before it shut.

This phone is amazing. Some of the things it does are magical. The head tilty thing is crazy and I've just managed to get the telly to show what's on phone. Must not tell DS of this and the Angry Bird big screen potential.

MellowMarshmallow Fri 01-Nov-13 23:28:50

Don't ave links handy. Went for something Knight for screen protectors. Was about £5 when all others just a £1 but didn't want to take any chances. That was on eBay. Got the case from amazon. The Amzer one which was £7.99 which annoyingly meant I'd need to pay p&p so also bought cheap book for DS to remove p&p. chose Amzer case as it had good US reviews. Hope that helps. Have just found out I also need to get micro SIM so will be a few days before I can do first feedback post.

Indith Sat 02-Nov-13 08:02:07

you can get the telly to show what's on the phone? oh wow! must play more.

can anyone help me out with fiddly bits? it has automatically put the entire contents of my gmail address book as contacts. I don't want that at all, how do I say no to linking them like that? plus on this old phone I could have different things for apps eg I have fb set to only give automatic notifications when on wireless but not on mobile data and gmail to never update emails unless I tell it to. all I can find on new one is to autosynch or not autosynch in general so is it all or nothing or can I do things individually?

going to go sort sim today, also realised am at the end of my contract so good timing!

MoogDroog Sat 02-Nov-13 08:35:39

Yes telly shows what's on phone! It helps
that we have a Samsung TV and bluray player, but I think you can do it with others.

Can't help with the fiddly bits I'm afraid, but I have just typed this entire post by dragging my finger across the keyboard rather than typing each letter. Faster MNing here I come!

YeahBuddy Sat 02-Nov-13 13:23:48

I'm going to get a case for mine as well, I assumed my s4 case would fit but this one is ever so slightly bigger. I like the actual buttons on the bottom - on the normal s4 the two sides buttons are touch sensitive and I was always accidentally brushing them!

Indith Sat 02-Nov-13 16:16:55

Right then, I have most of my usual apps sorted, I've got rid of most of the annoying screens and I've got my sim chopped and inserted and I've set the mobile data limit. I like how it will completely stop me once I hit the limit so no nasty bill surprised smile

Where is the button thing for turning autosynch on and off? I seem to have more options now I've got a sim in but I can't find the button again! Slowly learning my way round it. It is a bit of a beast!

The blokes in the 02 shop this morning were drooling a little and asking me how I'd got my hands on one already grin. One of them pointed out that I can take it in the bath. Woohoo! I no longer need to risk my kindle, kindle app downloaded, looks beautiful on this phone. I might just have to test it out tonight.

Need to play with the camera so I can have some photos for my wallpaper now!

androbbob Sat 02-Nov-13 17:12:48

Well I have got it and it is great! Everyone here has had a go of it and have just got my hands on it!! Have taken some photos with it and made an album with it and downloaded a game which the kids have played with.

phone feels big and quite weighty but stable like a tablet. Screen size is good and have watched a few utube videos and the quality is good. Will go to phone shop tomorrow to see if can get a case for it as it still seems like it could scratch ir break! Havent dropped it yet or put in water.

TheYamiOfYawn Sat 02-Nov-13 17:23:03

I am writing this with wooly gloves on. How cool is that?

magentastardust Sat 02-Nov-13 18:03:06

Mine still hasn't arrived ! Away to email Katie Mumsnet to check everything ok- I am a teeny bit scared now that there has been some mistake and actually I am not getting to review the phone.
I have been drooling over youtube ads for the phone and picking out cases and everything! sob!

Indith Sat 02-Nov-13 19:54:22

in the bath on the phone. slightly nervous!

BEEwitched Sat 02-Nov-13 20:39:22

I've just started playing with it - it's huge and gorgeous! Love the brushed steel look, and the slightly more intuitive and less know-it-all autocorrect function!

It'll take me a while to get used to it!

Indith Sun 03-Nov-13 10:29:21

my keyboard has shrunk! how do I get the big one back? d's 1 confessed to fiddling but claims he never got past thelock screen.

Indith Sun 03-Nov-13 11:00:01

done it! Could just be that I'm inept but I do find it hard to find things for simple settings on this you may have guessedgrin blush

alemci Sun 03-Nov-13 11:59:53

can't use mine yet or my old phone as the sim takes 24 hours to work.

want to set a password.

also realised that I can use my own wi fi provider at home so probably won't run up a huge net bill.

Rishi79 Sun 03-Nov-13 22:49:50

Looks like Samsung is scared of a device tester to test the phone and find faults smile and decided not to send me one and get into trouble smile Well, have to stick on with my broken iPhone now sad Good lulck testers.. Keen to read the feedbakcs to see whats so amazing on Samsung S4.

ShatnersBassoon Mon 04-Nov-13 09:42:55

Mine arrived on Friday, so I've been getting to grips with it this weekend, and even dared to let the children get their grubby little paws on it. I was on MN in the bath last night shock.

First impressions are that it doesn't really feel any different to my old smart phone - I was expecting something massively bulky, with a huge rubber pad surrounding it. I'm pleasantly surprised that it's just a phone, not something that I'd expect a builder to have to keep cement dust out (does that make sense to anyone but me?!).

Lovely and easy to work out even though I've never had a Samsung phone. I had a small sim card in my old phone so no problems there, and contacts seem to have moved with it. Children are all over it and have 'helpfully' changed some settings to make it better. We shall see...

Oh yes, and DH is silently, but very obviously, jealous of it. I usually have to make do with his old phones when he gets an upgrade, but now I'm the one with a whizzy little toy grin

magentastardust Mon 04-Nov-13 14:01:09

Well- I still haven't got mine...but I know where it is now -phew!

Post office said they tried to deliver it on Friday and left a card through the door to re arrange a delivery etc.
They never did the buggers as I purposely stayed in all Friday in anticipation of the delivery and even made the poor dc's walk home from school themselves.
Anyway phoned the depot today -the parcel has been sitting there since Friday and they will redeliver it tomorrow -so hopefully by the time I get it and get my micro Sim -I will be up and fully running by Wed eve/Thurs-almost a week behind everyone but looking forward to catching up !

YeahBuddy Mon 04-Nov-13 20:43:24

Has anybody tried taking pictures underwater yet? I really want to but I'm soooo scared I'll break it!!!

ShatnersBassoon Mon 04-Nov-13 20:46:51

I haven't, and I'm not sure when I'll want to. No snorkling trips planned, and underwater bath pics would not be fit for human consumption.

BerstieSpotts Mon 04-Nov-13 22:23:02

You could let the DCs loose with it in the bath with some rubber ducks or something? Or do you have a nice photogenic baby you could borrow to take to the swimming pool?

androbbob Mon 04-Nov-13 22:24:24

I have taken mine to work today and used it out and about on site taking photos of the fellas working on site. it rained and I wasnt too bothered about it getting wet!

The photo / camera bit has a few good functions - I have spotted that it does panoramic, so will have a go of that tomorrow and se how well that works. I have taken some photos of my nieces at the weekend and they seem crisp and clear.

I could do with changing the front screen as that picture and text 'life companion' or summat like that, is a tad annoying! need to think what to change it to though.

Downloaded some music as well - sounds good!

Waiting for the challenges to land now!!

viperslast Mon 04-Nov-13 23:02:56

Ooh I was trying to find this thread! Mine arrived Friday too. Of course I had forgotten I had entered so not checked my email meaning the first I knew was a random luffly phone arriving with my postman grin very nice surprise but took me a good 30 minutes to figure out what was going on whilst ds jumped around squeaking it was for him not likely

So far I love it however my keypad seems a tad off, not responding quite right almost a life of its own which got me wondering if we have any warranty with these phones and if so what counts as proof of date of "purchase"? Obviously I am being greedy really but I guess resolution of any issues would form part of any review?

BEEwitched Tue 05-Nov-13 11:34:26

I got my SIM card working and just had a nice long chat with my mom in Germany - excellent, clear line, not loud, not shrill, very easy to understand.

It's amazing how many mobile phones have fantastic features but absolutely suck at being a decent phone, I'm glad this one seems to be the whole package!

magentastardust Tue 05-Nov-13 13:08:19

Mine has finally arrived! It was addressed to the wrong number which explains why I never got the card through the door and luck was on my side as the postman was off ill today , luckily it was an old one that covered so recognised my name and knew that the parcel should have actually been for my house !
Can't wait to get it up and running tonight when I get a proper chance -first impressions are that it is really big!

alemci Tue 05-Nov-13 16:09:41

has anyone else put any security on theirs. I did a password but it is a pain because it locks constantly so you have to keep putting it in. On my android you don't have to do it so often.

Anyone got any ideas if you could stop this happening

YeahBuddy Tue 05-Nov-13 16:38:01

alemci you can change it so it only locks after a certain amount of time has passed if that's what you mean. Go to Settings> My Device> Lock Screen> Lock Automatically and try changing the time.

androbbob I hate that Life Companion text, it just seems a bit hmm but I can't think of anything yet to change it too.

Mine dropped shock shock accidentally from my bedside unit onto the wooden floor last night but has suffered no ill-effects. It has also been stolen and dribbled on by one of my toddler twins and (fingers crossed) seems absolutely fine!

MoogDroog Tue 05-Nov-13 16:49:33

I've changed my Life Companion text to say Thanks Mumsnet grin

Finding my way around it quite nicely now. I intend to try MNing in the bath later!

Well I have to say, I'm pleasantly surprised with how much I like this phone! I'm very set in my ways with my iphone lol and the predictive texting on the samsung is taking a lot of getting used to, but I love the bigger screen size, and the picture quality from the camera is amazing smile The signal is no better or worse than on my iphone; still can't use it downstairs in my house, but battery life is far better! Liking it so far smile

magentastardust Tue 05-Nov-13 21:14:25

Was looking forward to wowing my children with using the phone as the TV remote but sadly our Hitachi isn't compatible -boooo! smile

alemci Tue 05-Nov-13 21:54:22

thanks yeah buddy

MoogDroog Tue 05-Nov-13 22:56:03

On phone in the bath. This is the pinnacle of technology as far as I'm concerned. That and being able to type by swooshing my finger around.

I might never get out grin

TheYamiOfYawn Tue 05-Nov-13 22:59:53

I have been playing with mine today and have discovered how to make it take a photo by saying 'smile' or 'cheese'. I can't get the head tilting thing to work, though.

alemci Wed 06-Nov-13 09:41:22

also I have linked it to my home wifi. Does it automatically link to wifi when you are out and about or do you have to do something in the settings to enable it.

magentastardust Wed 06-Nov-13 12:04:40

Does anyone know how you put off the push notifications for example of facebook-does that have to be managed within the individual app or within the phone settings -either way I can't find it !

darksparrow Wed 06-Nov-13 12:12:02

Application Manager
Think you have do do each application that has a notification seperately I'm afraid.

I have googled tons for this phone - if in doubt google your problem and "S4" and you will get you answer!

MoogDroog Wed 06-Nov-13 13:41:44

Mine now has a case and screen protector. Doesn't look or feel quite so beautiful now.

Suppose I'll get used to it.

Indith Wed 06-Nov-13 14:13:17

I have a case now, one of those flexible ones over the back. I have a fancy screen Knight screen protector but not put it on as I'm scared of making the screen feel less nice.

overwise I think I'm fairly set up. Need to play with more functions for fun, can't see myself using voice command stuff but shall play for fun.

alemci Wed 06-Nov-13 15:18:55

I still don't understand about the wifi thing when you are out and about. Should you just be able to link up to it or do you have to turn something on. At the moment I don't think it works if I am not within reach of my own wifi

I have connected it to my wifi at home but have never had this sort of phone before. Is it like 3G?

ShatnersBassoon Wed 06-Nov-13 15:44:40

You'd have to be within the range of an open wifi signal. I use my 3G when I'm out of the house, my mobile internet. I have unlimited data allowance on my contract, so not a problem for me.

I sometimes use Wi-Fi hotspots when I'm out, like in John Lewis, but only because it's faster than my mobile internet. You have to sign in to these, and the phone will tell you if you're in range of Wi-Fi.

MoogDroog Wed 06-Nov-13 15:47:30

Alemci - not sure about this phone, but presume it works same as my last. You have to let it know about Wifi networks. Set it up at home and then when out and about search for nearby networks (say if you're in a coffee shop that has free Wifi) to join (sometimes with a password). Otherwise phone will give you 3g (if available)

Indith Wed 06-Nov-13 15:48:10

mine connects to my home wifi and when I'm at uni automatically connects to uni wifi as I've put the password in. When out and about if you use internet then it uses mobile data which you have to pay for. I have a certain amount I can use on my contact, above that would appear on my bill. If you go to a cafe or somewhere with free wifi you can tell your phone to connect, it should automatically tell you that there are networks available. usually one you've used a network once the phone will automatically connect to it once you are in range so you don't have to tell it to connect in places you regularly go to.

I think! grin

magentastardust Wed 06-Nov-13 21:20:03

I can't get the palm motion screen capture thing to work -I look a bit of a wally waving frantically at my phone!

MoogDroog Wed 06-Nov-13 21:50:08

Have you got palm motion turned on Magenta? If you have, you just swipe the side of your hand from right to left, touching the screen.

am totally gutted that i didnt get this. have applied for so much, and been doing the competitions for years and never got anything at all. how are the lucky ones chosen please? and when is it my turn??????

magentastardust Wed 06-Nov-13 22:34:30

Got it now -thanks. Practice! I was hovering my hand instead if touching.

magentastardust Wed 06-Nov-13 22:40:24

sad Cherry. I have been entering the comps for years too and not a sausage, I think with the insight thing it is probably just luck of the draw whether you fit the criteria of what the product testers are looking for -Age, age of dc's , location etc?
Hope it is your turn soon .

emblosion Wed 06-Nov-13 23:56:29

Sim card finally arrived today. We have lift off :-)

Indith Thu 07-Nov-13 08:52:09

haha the taking pictures by saying smile thing is ace.

magentastardust Thu 07-Nov-13 11:11:22

I like it too however my two year old says 'cheeeeeese' before I am ready and we end up with her taking the photo!
Lot of fun!
I am also enjoying being woken up by my 'walk through the forest' alarm which is much more pleasant than my normal shrill beeping!

I just had an ancient old lg phone before so everything was very basic but loved my dated ipod which I used a lot for taking quick snaps, email, viber etc -I am getting used to the Samsung now though and am getting quite attatched to it.
Downloaded my Tesco groceries app and a few others, anyone used the S health yet ? If this phone can make me thinner too that is even better ;)

Indith Thu 07-Nov-13 12:07:15

oooh tesco app, I should try that. The health one sorry of seems like a decent idea but I might then feel like I have to do exercise. .........
