Sainsbury's has asked us to find 30 MNers to test out their new Mobile by Sainsbury's service. You can either try out the service yourself, or give it to your child or another member of the family so that they can use it to keep in touch with you and others, and then you can tell us how they got on.

Here's what Sainsbury's say about the service: "The average UK family is feeling the pinch, and Mobile by Sainsbury's is an easy way to make your pound stretch further. The Nectar savings you can make through Mobile by Sainsbury's offers will allow a family of four to eat an incredible 45 meals a year*. We know that many customers find choosing a mobile phone network a bit stressful, so we've opted to not only keep our price plans as affordable as possible - we've also made it incredibly simple. With our pay as you go service, customers know exactly what they're getting and how much they're spending, which means no nasty surprises at the end of the month."

This is open to all UK MNers with at least one child at home. One of the main benefits of the service is the amount of Nectar points you can earn, so you will need to have a Nectar card, or be willing to sign up for one if you're selected to take part.

Testers will be provided with one of the handsets below (these will be allocated at random) and you can keep it after testing. You'll also be provided with a SIM card and a £10 top up voucher with which you can purchase one of the Mobile by Sainsbury's bundles which includes 200 minutes, unlimited texts and 250MB of data, lasting up to 30 days. The services included within these bundles are for UK use only and the minutes can be used to call any UK mobiles and landline numbers.

Nectar card users will receive double Nectar points on their Sainsbury’s shopping (some exclusions apply) and fuel while they are using the bundle service, as well as double Nectar points for every £1 they top up. You can link your Nectar account to your phone by texting your Nectar card number to 40774 for free. All points collected through Mobile by Sainsbury's will be credited to your Nectar account within 28 days.

If you're selected to be a tester but you're not currently a Nectar card user, we can provide you with a sign up sheet. You can find more information about the Mobile by Sainsbury's Nectar perks here.

Nokia 100

Samsung E1190

BlackBerry Curve 9320

Sony Xperia E

Samsung Galaxy Fame

Nokia Lumia 520

You can find out more information about the handsets here and via Sainsbury's customer care line on 0845 440 0775, or 40775 from a Mobile by Sainsbury's phone.

If you'd like to stay with Mobile by Sainsbury's after the trial period of up to one month you'll just need to continue to purchase Mobile by Sainsbury's bundles or top ups. If you don't want to carry on after the trial, you don't have to.

All selected testers who add their feedback to a thread on MN will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a £100 Sainsbury's voucher.

More information about Mobile by Sainsbury's can be found here and usage terms and conditions here.

If you’re interested in taking part, please sign up here.

Thanks and good luck,

* Based on a family of four spending £75 on food (ONS family spending 2011) and £39 on fuel (ONS living costs survey 2011) per week and have 4 linked numbers on active bundles

Done. This would be good. My eldest daughter starts high school in september so she would have my old basic phone for school and if I was lucky enough to be selected I would be using the new phone. Fingers crossed smile

Kveta Mon 29-Jul-13 18:46:47

Ooh, done. I am just coming to the end of my O2 contract and am scouting about for new deals, didn't even think to try sainsbury's!

ForgetfulNameChanger Mon 29-Jul-13 19:00:40

IloveJudgeJudy Mon 29-Jul-13 19:01:28

Yes. We would be very interested. Thank you.

Fluffycloudland77 Mon 29-Jul-13 19:01:55

Alambil Mon 29-Jul-13 20:25:50

TooWetToWoo Tue 30-Jul-13 09:27:15

MadeOfStarDust Tue 30-Jul-13 10:22:09

Meee Please - didn't know Sainsburys did mobile phones either.... always looking for cost effective mobile service and getting points to offset against the cost of food (Christmas! etc) is a bonus.

Orli Tue 30-Jul-13 10:27:37

Done! I hope I get chosen...

icecreamcrackers Tue 30-Jul-13 11:11:50

Duplogiraffe Tue 30-Jul-13 11:32:29

SisterMatic Tue 30-Jul-13 12:04:47

Done! Hopeful for this one!

Thinking of changing both phone and service so would like to be considered.

Tortoise Tue 30-Jul-13 12:33:20

Done. Fingers crossed I get selected although I doubt it as my reason wasn't very exciting lol!

afromom Tue 30-Jul-13 12:54:46

Done! I've been thinking of looking for a good phone deal for DS for ages as his Dad works away for long periods of time and he really struggles with missing him. It would be great if he had his own phone that he could use to text his Dad, with a bit of privacy, when he is missing him. Fingers crossed!

JParkson Tue 30-Jul-13 13:42:19

I'm in smile

I'm happy with any of the phones bar the Nokia 100 (my brother's is intermittent, and my 10yr old DS's one decided to not accept phonecalls or messages one day when they were out playing... cue police being called out to help find him!!)

alreadytaken Tue 30-Jul-13 15:23:03

have been looking for a mobile contract for the teenager - however Sainsburys bundles are not very competitive. Happy to try it out for free though.

YoshysMum Tue 30-Jul-13 23:14:27

Done, thanks.

bushkate55 Wed 31-Jul-13 11:07:09

Yes I would certainly be interested as this would be a good opportunity to try out a different system from a different provider at a lower cost than I currently pay for my daughter's phone use.

babybearsmummy Wed 31-Jul-13 13:32:57

Would love to test this, current contract is nearly up so would love to give Sainsburys a whirl and see how they compare as my current provider is RUBBISH!

Caoilainn Wed 31-Jul-13 15:31:56

Done, would love to test this as I was about to go and buy DS1 a pay as you go phone in the next couple of weeks.

painforlife Wed 31-Jul-13 16:17:31

Done. I'm sick of t-mobile customer service. this is perfect timing for me to switch to another network. plus I can give the phone to my daughter who always takes mine!

PearlyWhites Wed 31-Jul-13 16:31:32

Mumsnet please could you check if my survey was registered thanks.

Yes and my application as well please if possible. I'm on my phone and it went a bit weird when I submitted the form!

DelayedActionMouseMaker Wed 31-Jul-13 17:49:49

This would be great for me as I have no mobile at all! smile

PenguinBear Wed 31-Jul-13 19:53:19

Groovee Wed 31-Jul-13 21:16:39

WhoremoaneeGrainger Thu 01-Aug-13 09:53:29

Would love to try this out - DD goes to Senior School in September and its quite a walk from here to there - would feel good about her having a phone, especially in the winter.

nerysw Thu 01-Aug-13 20:00:19

Done, I'd like to know how using the bundles compares with the contract I have at the moment and this looks like the perfect way to find out, fingers crossed....

umabritmum Fri 02-Aug-13 17:30:30

Signed up! Looking forward to test the service and hopefully save some bucks by doubling up my nectar points

loopylou6 Fri 02-Aug-13 17:36:42

So, when do we get to find out who the lucky 30 are?

FireEngineDoll Fri 02-Aug-13 18:18:23

Signed up too, fingers crossed.

Trickle Fri 02-Aug-13 18:53:15

ooo DH is near the end of his contract and our network doesn't cover our new house, great way to find out if this would

erikab922 Fri 02-Aug-13 21:12:21

All done, would be great for my DH to test as his phone is ancient, I've really been dithering in trying to find a new/better mobile service for him - seems like since I locked into my last contract you are starting to get less service for more £££.

NettleTea Sat 03-Aug-13 11:59:47

signed up!!

Blatherskite Sat 03-Aug-13 12:30:40

Done. I'm going to be looking for a new phone soon so would love an opportunity to try-before-i-buy smile

Good luck all!

Messandmayhem Sun 04-Aug-13 08:11:48

Tortoise Sat 10-Aug-13 13:21:00

Did it come by royal mail or courier?
Couriers are known to not be able to find my house so it would be good to know who's delivering.

SisterMatic Sat 10-Aug-13 15:10:36

Sorry, have been out.
it came by courier in an overnight mail bag..vair exciting.

It was the nokia 100..its alright actually. Been making a few calls on it. Network coverage is good too. Thanks Sainsbos!

Fingers crossed it will arrived today grin

Tortoise Mon 12-Aug-13 09:15:15

Me too afro.
I'm just hoping its a courier that can find my house! I'm along a main road but still they struggle to find it!

afromom Mon 12-Aug-13 09:30:28

Mine is hard to get to as well, it's on a new estate so often doesn't come up on satnavs unless they have been updated recently.

mammal Mon 12-Aug-13 09:42:26

Thank you. I managed to miss your email and had no idea I had been chosen until the package arrived this morning. A lovely surprise!

Courier has just arrived with a Samsung Galaxy Fame. Ds is very happy.

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 09:52:55

How do I register my current nectar card for the trial of extra points? I've been sent a new nectar card but already have one.

umabritmum Mon 12-Aug-13 10:01:57

We were given the very basic phone Nokia 100. DD was little dejected on seeing her handset but I consoled her that Mom will be checking only the service and Mom is glad to receive one from Sainsbury. So, I guess others Mumsnetters can be relieved of their handset.

Ours arrived this morning, the basic Samsung E1190 - which is absolutely fine for our needs, perfect in fact because it's unlikely to get him mugged! grin

We will not be able to test the 3G or mobile internet aspect of the service - as neither are available on the handset. However, am impressed with the signal so far, and DS has sent 4 texts out and made a call and all is well so far!

Groovee you need to text your nectar card no to: 40774 and just register your existing card... that's all we did.

Blatherskite Mon 12-Aug-13 10:07:35

Nothing here yet. Hoping it arrives today.

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 10:11:33

Thanks Whoever, need to get the flaming phone off him now! He's on his £10 bundle using unlimited texts

afromom Mon 12-Aug-13 10:16:46

Still waiting! Hopefully they are not driving round in circles trying to find us!

Tortoise Mon 12-Aug-13 10:17:39

Those of you that have received their phone, which courier delivered please? I'm worried because I don't want them to deliver to the wrong house (it's happened a few times!) or not deliver at all.

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 10:17:56

I thought it was my new mattress by the size of the van. Was a bit relieved it wasn't haha.

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 10:18:23

It was just a random one with a big massive white van Tortoise.

Breezy1985 Mon 12-Aug-13 10:24:35

Were still waiting here, DD has been sat next to the front door since she got up grin

Tortoise Mon 12-Aug-13 10:26:20

Thanks. If it doesn't arrive today I will ask MN if they can find out for me.

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 10:30:37

Well think the last 2 days of the school holidays will be quiet while he works out the new phone. grin

Im still waiting for mine.....daren't do any housework today in case I don't hear the door, that's my excuse anyway!. Really hope it comes today, I'm like a big kid!!!!! smile smile

afromom Mon 12-Aug-13 11:05:44

Yeah! It's arrived! DS very pleased to have it, but a bit disappointed that he didn't get one with Internet as he was hoping to be able to use it to Skype his Dad who lived abroad. We got the basic Samsung E1190.
Thank you so much Sainsbury's, he is currently very happy texting me and trying to get lots of people's contacts to add to it. I think the family will be getting lots of random texts today grin

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 11:06:24

Would it be wrong to send him to the shops so I can phone and check on him? Need to take him to Primark too as everyone loses coverage in there.

afromom Mon 12-Aug-13 11:08:55

Tortoise ours came with APC Overnight. Maybe they are using different ones in different areas?

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 11:12:58

The HUGE bag it arrived in says APC but don't know if it then goes to a SE courier.

I wondered if they would pick specific phones to test in specific areas too. The wait is killing me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

magentastardust Mon 12-Aug-13 11:16:38

Hope mine comes today, I am away with work tomorrow and won't be in for any deliveries!

Breezy1985 Mon 12-Aug-13 11:17:21

I hate waiting, DD has given up.and gone out, I want to finish the decorating upstairs but won't hear the door. I am desperate to know what phone she's got..

magentastardust Mon 12-Aug-13 11:18:30

It says it was random MummyB? Think it is the service rather than the phone we are testing -would be lovely to get a good handset though. I am not very good at waiting either!

magentastardust Mon 12-Aug-13 11:19:33

We are in Scotland and couriers normally arrive about 3 days after they are actually supposed to so this may be a long wait.

Tortoise Mon 12-Aug-13 11:20:21

Thanks, not heard of them. Nothing so far. I'm very impatient and hate waiting lol. Also need to go to the shop for food supplies!

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 11:30:19

Don't try sending texts too quickly. But they are going through quickly now. Not tried calling yet, when he goes to Football training that will be good to see how quickly he answers.

Breezy1985 Mon 12-Aug-13 11:41:51

Ours is here, had APC on the van too.

We got the Nokia 100, DD is slightly disappointed that she won't be able to test the internet, she was hoping to be able to go on whatsapp but she's playing on it already and looking forward to being able to text.

Fillybuster Mon 12-Aug-13 11:41:59

It arrived this morning - Samsung Galaxy....I know nothing about phones (been using a work blackberry for the past 8 years...) but am delighted as it is for me smile smile Thank you MN and Sainsburys smile

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 11:48:36

The £10 bundle is a great deal too 200 minutes with unlimited texts and some internet. Dd is already going "Oh that would suit me great!" as it's the texts she likes.

Fed up of waiting now, lol.

It is a cracking bundle, but a real shame that the non-Internet phones get no use from the included web access. It would be nice to have a bundle with maybe a few more inclusive minutes and no Internet access to choose too?

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 12:07:22

I was just thinking that just now Whoever. It would be good for the non internet phones to get more minutes instead as they are theoretically missing out.

Mines just arrived! Got the Nokia 100 in the end. My lad got his hopes up for one that was a bit more all-singing-all-dancing, but we are chuffed to bits. Still cant believed I got picked! lol smile

magentastardust Mon 12-Aug-13 12:41:47

Our courier just arrived too-a Samsung Galaxy Y-Which wasn't on the above list but is on the Sainsbury's phone page link.

Thank you! I needed a new phone badly mine is very old (and embarrassing ;) but ds is also starting to ask about phones as many of his friends now have -so I think I may treat him and give him a surprise!

Trigglesx Mon 12-Aug-13 13:04:10

I just got mine - Samsung Galaxy Y as well. My older phone has been well and truly eclipsed.

Thank you Sainsburys and MN! Have tried a couple things on it, but need to wait until tonight when the DCs are in bed to get everything set up on it properly - as it will take me forever! blush

Tortoise Mon 12-Aug-13 13:23:56

Still nothing here sad.

umabritmum Mon 12-Aug-13 14:15:57

The Nokia 100 signal ( all 5) is great and the phone is working like a charm compared to my existing provider.

* Calls and texts - perfect . No distortions on calls
* Radio - Received 7 stations and the headphone works good.
Overall, it reminds me when I had my very first basic phone years back smile

Could not get a chance to test the internet and other facilities because of the limitation in the handset but I must say that I am very impressed by Sainsbury Mobile Service smile.

Tortoise Mon 12-Aug-13 14:22:08

I just phoned APC couriers and they tracked my parcel with my address.
It's out for delivery and should be here in the next 15 mins grin.

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 14:30:00

whoop whoop Tortoise

Going to try the internet tonight when I take ds bowling. He's on the wifi just now.

Anyone know how to check what is left on your allowance?

afromom Mon 12-Aug-13 14:35:55

I think you call the number that you used to register the top up voucher and it tells you how much you have left there. Not sure though, just going on how it works on other networks.

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 14:39:21

How do I check my Mobile by Sainsbury’s bundle balance?

To check what’s left in your bundle, call 40775 free from your mobile.

To check how much credit you have left in your pay as you go account, dial *#1345#.

I've been with Tmobile so long that I never have a clue how to do things.

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 14:42:45

Just reading throught the FAQ and in time, you'll be able to have a recurring bundle where it will automatically top up. That will be so helpful for me.

I've had mine however it is a very basic phone with no web access at all, a samsung E1190 so the web access part is completely useless. Bit gutted about that tbh. Oh well grin

However, Ive set the phone up, instructions on how to top up seem clear and consise and it was very easy to add the bundle and it wasn't a long winded process at all which I liked. I can't stand it when other network companies add adverts or make the process a hard one when I just wanted to top up quickly. All good so far.

Tortoise Mon 12-Aug-13 15:27:25

Not here. Phoned up and I think they are now going to the wrong place! Might have to phone again! They will not like me lol.

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 15:31:47

Tortoise... you're going to have to meet them somewhere grin

Blatherskite Mon 12-Aug-13 15:32:07

Where did you get the number for APC from Tortoise? I've had nothing here either

Tortoise Mon 12-Aug-13 15:39:29

Yay its here. Got the Samsung Galaxy Y.
APC number is 0800 373737 got it by googling!
Thank you MN and Sainsbury. Going to set it all up now.

magentastardust Mon 12-Aug-13 15:47:21

Glad you finally got it Tortoise!

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 15:49:08

Whooo hooooo at long last Tortoise.

Breezy1985 Mon 12-Aug-13 15:54:27

Glad you've finally got it tortoise grin

Ours is working well so far, I'm glad for the unlimited text, DD has been texting me every 2 minutes, hoping the novelty wears off soon grin After being a bit disappointed to start with she's now very pleased with the phone, don't think she's put it down yet smile

Blatherskite Mon 12-Aug-13 15:56:39

I rang. They have nothing for my address at all today.

Tortoise Mon 12-Aug-13 15:57:18

All up and working. Signal fine so far. Will be going out tomorrow so good chance to test it.

Tortoise Mon 12-Aug-13 15:58:15

Oh no blather sad.

daisychicken Mon 12-Aug-13 15:59:31

Parcel was "tried to deliver" while I was out this morning so I've rearranged for tomorrow afternoon - cant wait to see what we have and to try it out!

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 16:05:26

Blather try emailing Angelie and see what she can find out.

Trigglesx Mon 12-Aug-13 16:11:06

signal fine here for phone and text, but running into a problem getting it to sync with my wifi. Very annoying, just seem to keep going in circles.

Blatherskite Mon 12-Aug-13 16:11:24

Already done smile

She has the right address so either Sainsbury's have mixed it up somewhere along the way or my phone just hasn't been dispatched yet.

magentastardust Mon 12-Aug-13 16:14:02

It is exciting everyone receiving their parcels! ( I am a nightmare at Christmas time)

Tortoise Mon 12-Aug-13 16:17:59

In the op it Says includes £10 top up voucher. Do I have to pay for first top up or is it free?

afromom Mon 12-Aug-13 16:59:58

There should an envelope in the package with hand written note on the front. The voucher is inside with the £10 top up on it.

Trigglesx Mon 12-Aug-13 17:07:21

Oh hell. I can't get the stupid thing to connect to the internet. Reset router and everything. Damn thing just keeps scanning - tries to connect (password is correct, I've checked it about 50 times) and then disconnects or keeps bringing up the password thing again and again.

I give up. Cannot think straight I'm so aggravated. I'd reset the phone and start over, but don't know how. I can't face an age on the phone with a help/support desk over this. hmm

At least I can test the phone and text stuff anyway. sigh

DelayedActionMouseMaker Mon 12-Aug-13 17:14:08

Ok, just arrived and its an E1190 so the same as Ghostsgowoo. First impressions (and I know the review is not for the phone) is that this thing is going to last 5 minutes, very flimsy and plasticky and basic. But it's free and for that I am über grateful at the moment!

So impressions of the sainsburys bit...
Top up, connection is very sketchy and I had to try twice to connect my card and actually put my £10 on. You have to register a top up card first, I'm assuming this is the nectar card linking bit but in skim reading the instructions this isn't clear.
I now have to figure out how to convert the credit to a bundle, it seems I will need to make another (free) call to do this, it would have been easier if I could just do that straight away. I have two kids running around being noisy and making the first call was fairly challenging in itself smile
As this phone will be a very seldom used piece of kit (no Internet or camera or music etc) then I possibly wouldn't be too hassled about going through the whole process again to sign up to the bundles if this if i wasnt doing so as part of a test.
Ok, converting to bundle now, but its so crackly I can barely hear what's happening and it seems to have skipped straight back to the beginning of the menu without letting me know if my bundle request worked or not.

Free phone aside, First impressions not great here I'm afraid.

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 17:15:01

I had an envelope with the top up voucher inside, you then call and use the long number on the voucher to top up.

My internet connected no bother, found my wifi and I got the password right for once.

I also found inside the sim pack the phone number for the phone after phoning my own phone to get it blush

DelayedActionMouseMaker Mon 12-Aug-13 17:17:25

On my old phone I used to do top ups on the run, this would be near impossible on this system. It's barely audible and misses out great chunks of what the lady with the accent is saying. It's bloody frustrating!

One thing I do love is the Northern Accent though, as a Yorkshire lass I approve! smile

Trigglesx Mon 12-Aug-13 17:18:05

I had to agree, I was slightly annoyed at having to do a 2 step process to get the bundle sorted. First you put the credit on, then you access the bundle. I have managed to go online, but not using my wifi - which is annoying, but I suspect that's a PHONE problem not a Sainsburys service problem. I do, however, wonder where it's connecting. hmm

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 17:19:32

Delayed You do get a top up card to register but I didn't need it to put on the initial £10 and I had to text my nectar number to another number.

Once you get the kids in bed, go through the pack as it explains it more.

DelayedActionMouseMaker Mon 12-Aug-13 17:20:05

Oh and would agree on the the tariff being much less value for money if you have a phone with no Internet access....rendering that part of the bundle useless, would think a few extra minutes would make up for that if you did a more inclusive tariff later in the future.

Trigglesx Mon 12-Aug-13 17:23:22

I ended up ringing the number back and speaking to a customer service rep re the bundle after putting the credit on, as I thought I'd done it all wrong because it said "you have zero bundles right now" or something like that. The rep sorted it, took my details, and then added my nectar card number as well. But it cost me 25p to do that. hmm Hate having to pay to talk to rep.

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 17:23:55

Also when you register and use the top up card it puts it on the phone automatically. Then you would only have to do the bundle. But I like the idea of a rolling bundle.

DelayedActionMouseMaker Mon 12-Aug-13 17:28:35

Thanks Groovee, have done it now, kids quieter, am calmer! smile
Sending the text to connect my card was a little hit and miss too...couldnt get enough signal....bizarrely when I rested the phone on my ipad it boosted the signal hugely and sent it!

Just come home and my very lovely next door neighbours handed me a package which they had signed for - a Galaxy Y. Now, I don't remember receiving an email from Mumsnet saying I had been chosen but I am in the middle of school uniform shopping so anything is possible.
One reasonably impressed 14 year old. It's a touch screen phone so already a step up from the very basic handset he previously had.
He found the top up voucher very easy to use and he has linked my nectar card to the network without any problems.
He has already tested out the messaging facility and it certainly works ok from upstairs to downstairs.
The fact that there is a "borrow a pound" service is a really useful tool as it gives me peace of mind that he will never be out of credit. He was also impressed with the fact that there was a small amount of preloaded credit.
Connection to the internet using the home hub was easy but at the moment he can't access the internet via the Sainsbury network, not sure if that's him not setting the phone up correctly or a network issue. We'll have a longer look once the initial novelty of a new phone has worn off.

I thin it would have been easier if everyone had the same phone as I don't really see how you can give an accurate review when different handsets have different features e.g internet access. I didn't realise you could still buy a mobile that didn't have internet access.

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 17:59:20

Nor did I mummy as even my dad has internet on his basic nokia from Asda.

DelayedActionMouseMaker Mon 12-Aug-13 18:01:48

Agree mummyB I Last had a phone over a year ago and this is a very different kettle of fish, it's like going back 10 years grin

Not wanting to sound like a green-eyed monster or anything but I think its a bit pointless giving phone models to test the network that are poles apart. Some we were given were so basic we cant even review what the web connection is like, whereas others have got an all-singing-all-dancing model to test it on. I don't really get it.

DelayedActionMouseMaker Mon 12-Aug-13 18:08:58

I'm assuming that Sainsburys were given a certain amount of free phones by each company to use for promotional purposes? I'm very grateful for the phone tbh, i can't afford a hugely expensive phone and so have put off buying one at all, so to get one for free is lovely...

...but I am a little jealous of those with the fancy scmancy ones! smile

Trigglesx Mon 12-Aug-13 18:12:18

I am surprised - what's the point of asking people to check the internet service on phones that have none - or such limited capability that they just can't.

I'm not complaining - I've got a singing, dancing one. But I agree that it would have been more helpful with more varied feedback if everyone had the singing dancing ones of some sort.

I don't get it either tbh. Its put me off the whole thing really because I can't give an complete review of the network because the phone is so basic. The web access bit is an important feature in choosing a network for me and I would have to buy another phone in order for me to continue using the Sainsbury's network which I can't afford to do. Its such a shame as I wanted to swap to sainsbos network as it looked so good.

Ghostsgowoooh - I completely agree. Ive got the Nokia 100 and cant believe how basic it is and I will be surprised if it lasts long enough to do some kind of review on it. It is more like a toy phone. Like you, it has put me off Sainsbury's network straight away as I don't know what the web access is like where I am.

There's no 3G on the basic phones either. DS is heading somewhere very rural soon, where I have to use a 3G signal booster to get any signal. So it'll be interesting to see if he can use the service! smile

Breezy1985 Mon 12-Aug-13 18:37:29

We got the Nokia 100 too, even the 3310 I had over 10 years ago had more functions. Liking the network so far but DD is already asking for an upgrade for xmas, even my mums tenner jobby has a camera. Would of thought that they'd given us phones with net access so we could check the service but suppose can't complain with it being free and she's making the most of the texting.

Tortoise Mon 12-Aug-13 18:43:38

I agree its a bit silly that some can't test internet.
So far found top up very easy (once I found the envelope!) Adding the bundle was also very simple. Also have linked nectar card and wireless box.
So far all good, no problems.

magentastardust Mon 12-Aug-13 18:45:09

I also was a bit surprised that so many of the 'basic' phones are being used for the review-You needed to have a child to take part in the review and for the majority of testers it is for their child to use -I would say the Nokia 1100 in particular with the features of 'large Keys' and 'a torch' would be aimed at the more senior market rather than a child/teenager?

However I guess it is the network we are reviewing and not the actual handset but I agree that it would have been good for everyone to have had one that could access the internet as that does effect the network review.

Has anyone received a Galaxy fame or a Nokia Lumia yet ? smile

Fanjango Mon 12-Aug-13 19:02:35

Have to wait for tomorrow to get my phone. They would pick the one day in out to try to deliver! Can't wait to see what we've got smile

DelayedActionMouseMaker Mon 12-Aug-13 19:30:27

I've never had a phone with a camera, as a photographer it's something I would have loved. smile

afromom Mon 12-Aug-13 19:35:29

We've just realised that we did our top up wrong! We put the voucher on and didn't connect the bundle whoops! DS has been texting all day and had managed to use up £2.75 worth of credit! So I called the number and spoke to the man who added the extra credit for free and connected to the bundle. He was very helpful and didn't even laugh at the thick women who can't top up the phone wink

On the down side we have realised that not only can we not use the Internet on Skype for DS to call his Dad abroad as we have a basic model, he also can't call or text him with the bundle! So although he's having great fun texting me all day and my Mum, it's not going to be much good for the purpose that we wanted it for hmm

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 19:36:53

Am out and away from wifi and the mobile data won't work. Have tried switching on and off and have switched the phone on and on. Any ideas?

Most teenagers use or have a more capable phone than a basic phone imo, at least ds has and so does his friends and he's nearly 14. street cred and all grin ds has a galaxy y on 02 that his dad bought and its a proper sturdy great little phone.

Trigglesx Mon 12-Aug-13 20:47:56

I have a question for any with a galaxy Y. When you are starting to set up web, it tells you to text WEB to a number... can someone please give me that number - I've accidentally deleted it and can't find it anywhere. Thanks!

Tortoise Mon 12-Aug-13 21:02:15

Truffle text WEB to 40127

Trigglesx Mon 12-Aug-13 21:06:30

oh thank you!!!!

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 21:19:30

Will the WEB thingy be what I need to do on the Galaxy Fame then? It's so not working.

Trigglesx Mon 12-Aug-13 21:24:46

mine wouldn't connect to internet at all until I did that and installed what they sent back.. still not connecting to my home wifi, but i'll eventually either sort that or stomp my feet grin

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 21:28:32

I'm downloading the software update but need the wifi for that. Maybe a job for tomorrow.

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 21:33:39

Right I am being really stupid, where in the settings will I find the web messages?

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 21:35:28

phone now rebooting with a minion type character on it. Hope I haven't fooked the phone at the first hurdle blush

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 21:37:04

Magenta we got a Galaxy Fame. I hadn't told ds about this phone at all, so would accept anything and when I was explaining about it, he sighed and said "phew I'm glad I didn't get the lumia as that is what everyone else has been getting and they don't like them. I like a Samsung."

magentastardust Mon 12-Aug-13 21:45:46

Ooh the fame looks good-looks like it has a really good camera. I am away to try and get my Galaxy Y set up now that I have peace!

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 21:49:06

Phew finally got it all working. Thought we had a faulty phone.

Groovee Mon 12-Aug-13 21:55:33

It's made me realise how much I miss my samsung. Wonder if ds wants an iPhone? wink

DelayedActionMouseMaker Mon 12-Aug-13 22:39:56

Ghostsgowooo, if you figure out how to get the phone to stop its beep every time you press a key I'd really loved to know, searched everywhere to find this function or the ability to change the ringtone and nadda.

afromom Mon 12-Aug-13 22:55:06

It's in settings-profile-select profile-edit-scroll down to keypad tone-select mute

magentastardust Mon 12-Aug-13 23:39:46

Okay this is embarrassing -set up bundle and credit etc no probs -can someone please tell me though where does the SD memory card go -I have the galaxy Y. I have found an online manual but it doesn't tell you where it goes for simplefolk like me!

magentastardust Mon 12-Aug-13 23:41:15

okay found it!

DelayedActionMouseMaker Tue 13-Aug-13 00:48:32

Afromom, do you have the Samsung e1190? Because mine doesn't have profile edit on it.

Groovee Tue 13-Aug-13 07:55:29

There's a memory card? blush Maybe I need to have a look through that box more.

I took the phone off ds last night as I knew he would sit on it all night and we go back to school tomorrow. So getting back into routine. We'll see how the coverage is on his walk to school.

Thought we had everything sussed here and then read some of the other testers feedback about registering a bundle. I hadn't realised that the £10 top up didn't automatically mean that we had the £10 bundle. I'm used to dealing with a contract phone not a pay as you go so don't know if this is something that pay as you go customers automatically do. The phone worked, I topped up using the voucher, got a message telling me the amount of credit on the account, son could send texts, make calls, connect to the internet so it hadn't clicked that I needed to do anything else.
I rang the 40775 number at 8.00am this morning, spoke to a very nice, helpful adviser, who didn't laugh at me and despite the fact that the actual credit on the phone was around £7.00 (yes son, all of your friends and relatives know your telephone number now and that you haven't done anything exciting this summer holidays) has attached a £10 bundle. I can see that afromum had a similar issue so perhaps the instructions need to be a little clearer, that a £10 top up doesn't automatically link to a £10 bundle, you actually have to buy a bundle with your top up.
Customer services were easy to get hold of, polite, pleasant and checked that the top up card and my nectar card were all linked. In addition they suggested that security codes were set up on the account which was very easy to do.
Criticism - cost of call to customer services was, according to the voice message, up to 25p - not a lot but couldn't this be free or included in the bundle of minutes?

Groovee Tue 13-Aug-13 08:28:43

I only knew I had to register a bundle because Vodafone offered a similar service when dd had a PAYG from them (my granny died and left £109 on the phone as she topped up every so often to keep the phone active despite never using it). And I had to note down when to call up.

This is why a rolling bundle would be a good idea. The 25p to call CS is a bit annoying too especially when other providers provide this service free.

Am off shopping in Sainsbury's today grin

Blatherskite Tue 13-Aug-13 08:33:37

I'm hoping our phone arrives today. I'm getting very jealous of all this talk of setting up phones!

afromom Tue 13-Aug-13 09:06:27

Glad I wasn't the only one fingersandthumbs

poachedeggs Tue 13-Aug-13 09:06:56

Mine came yesterday - a Galaxy Fame, I feel very lucky. Thank you Sainsbury's!

I had to phone tech support about a glitch when I was setting it up, and the man was helpful and no waiting at all, fab start.

Top up was easy and I agree she has a lovely accent! I didn't realise I had to select a bundle either, but fortunately hadn't used any credit so it was no problem.

I was a bit sad that because I didn't link the nectar card first I don't think I'll get the points on the first top up. But never mind. I haven't had a nectar card until now so idon't know what I'm missing!

Signal here is patchy on my usual O2 network but it's worse on this one. I've found a patch in the kitchen near the window. The neighbours think I've lost the plot grin

As a result I probably won't try out the internet until tomorrow when I'm working away all day and will have some signal.

Delayed sorry the edit profile bit is:
Select the profile you want (driving/meeting/outdoor) then select edit (in the bottom left hand corner) -sorry I was doing it from memory , DS wouldn't part from "his" phone lol!

I have the Nokia 100 to test. Set it up yesterday morning. Unless I'm being really dim (strong possibility!) there is no Internet so I'm not sure how I'm supposed to test this out?

Also I just checked calling credit. It says I'm on the bundle tariff but only have £1.98 credit left. I thought texts were free on the bundles? My son was texting the entire population yesterday. Oops.

Blatherskite Tue 13-Aug-13 10:14:37

Rang APC again. Nothing for my address due to be delivered again today sad

I wonder if they've used a different courier for some of them?

DelayedActionMouseMaker Tue 13-Aug-13 10:38:57

Thanks afromom, that other ringtone was awful! smile

Well, made my first call, sent my first text, all seems fine. When I call from our house the connection is crackly and breaks up a lot but we have had patchy connection here with one other provider. DH uses 02 and that's crystal clear however. Not really sure what other feedback I can add aside from that as that's about all I can do. Is that all they wanted from us non interweb types?

DelayedActionMouseMaker Tue 13-Aug-13 10:40:42

Seems like a whole lotta faff for not a lot of gain on their part really, not that I'm unhappy about getting a free phone and what will probably amount to a months texts and calls for me! smile

Blatherskite Tue 13-Aug-13 10:45:47

I'm going out. We were in all day yesterday partly because DD had been poorly and partly to wait for this phone. As far as I can tell, nothing is due to be delivered today either. I can't bear another day of stir-crazy kids

Trigglesx Tue 13-Aug-13 11:30:38

Phone service is pretty good here at our house, which can sometimes be a bit spotty. I did notice some echoing on the phone which is distracting. The texts are going through, even from our dining room, which has previously been labelled the black hole of Calcutta for phone signal. hmm

So far so good. I'll be out and about more tomorrow, so can check service in different areas - especially (and ironically) our local Sainsburys which always seems to have a huge "no signal" area at the back half of the store that drives me crazy. (for some reason, when I'm browsing at the back of the store - that's when the school is ringing me re my DS. Always! hmm)

Fillybuster Tue 13-Aug-13 11:51:22

Feedback so far:

1. I also didn't link the Nectar card before topping up, so another one who didn't get the points. Also don't normally use a Nectar card, but still a bit sad about that - I think 'regular' Sainsbury's customers would be more cross, so maybe worth clarifying the instructions?

2. Another one who didn't realise that you have to select the package after topping up. Again, no harm done, but instructions could be made more straightforward on the IVR platform.

3. Galaxy Fame here too. Lovely phone (ok, I can't figure it out, but that's for me to deal with...grin) but 24 hours after selecting the package I still have no mobile data access. I have called the support line, and texted the number I was given several times. Each time I receive a message telling me that my mobile data access settings will be sent through shortly, but so far, nothing. This is definitely 'service' rather than 'phone'...can anyone help?

I never have signal in our sainsbury's either, and you're right - it will be the only time that the school need me! It'll be interesting to see if Sainsbury's have signal on their own network in their store. I suspect not, because they piggyback on Vodafone as far as I know. (I'm currently on VF)

Fillybuster - we had the same issue re mobile internet access. However, it was me being dim again - (honest I'm not usually this bad). A message had been sent for the internet set up but it wasn't appearing in text message inbox because it wasn't a text message as such.

At the top of the home screen there was an envelope intertwined with the settings icon. When I opened this it contained the data settings needed. Very easy to install once I had realised where it was and because I had texted web to the number several times we had several of the messages.

I'm also another one of those people who didn't register their nectar card number first - although I seem to remember putting in my nectar card details when I signed up so perhaps I will get points or did I just confirm that I had a nectar card?

Groovee Tue 13-Aug-13 13:02:13

Filly, We had the same problem. At the top of the screen swipe it down to bring up a menu type page and download the software. You need wifi on. Once it's all done and rebooted it will work. Took me most of last night to get it sorted.

I didn't register my nectar card til after I set up the phone. Used my card this morning in Sainsbury's. Not sure really how one works. I've had mine for years.

Groovee Tue 13-Aug-13 13:03:11

Oh and ds used the phone out and about today. Good signal and quick with texts and he phoned dh to see how it went with dh being a fair distance away with no problems.

Breezy1985 Tue 13-Aug-13 13:30:03

DD has made a fair few phone calls now, yesterday the signal was really glitchy while we were out and about and a few texts would not send, I had a perfect signal on my phone (3) but seems to have been fine today as she's managed to ring me every 5 minutes, don't think the 200 minutes will last her long at all hmm She's off to her dads this weekend and they usually have a rubbish signal at his house so we'll see how it is there.

I also thought the bundle.would go on automatically, so had to ring twice, I think a rolling bundle would be fab, my old payg phone used to do this and it was handy.

Can't really test anything else as no internet, though I do think non internet users should have there own bundle with some extra minutes.

Been using the phone for a couple of days now. Overall I found it fairly easy to top-up and choose a tariff. The signal for phone calls and texts has been good. I cant comment on the web access from where I am as the phone didn't have this function. Overall I think the Sainsbury's network seems okay, although it doesn't really tempt me to change over to them as I use the web a lot on my phone so I'm happy as I am. Thank you though for the opportunity!!! smile

SisterMatic Tue 13-Aug-13 16:13:40

I found it abit of a fuss to have to top up and then buy the bundle, as I went straight to the bundle part when I called.

I am also getting a few texts from is lovely to hear from you, I just get excited thinking somebody wants to talk to me grin

SisterMatic Tue 13-Aug-13 16:15:26 find out it is just an information text sad

(Pressed post too soon)

Groovee Tue 13-Aug-13 20:18:10

Been all over the place today and finding the network coverage good and the internet is working well. Have a very happy little boy. Will see how he gets on at school this week with the school run and football practice.

magentastardust Tue 13-Aug-13 23:02:42

Been finding network coverage good , Internet has been pretty quick and working well. Made some calls and quite a few texts -the first couple seems quite slow for some reason but not had any problems since. I can't seem to work out how to hang up calls but that is as issue with me and not the phone or network smile

Tortoise Tue 13-Aug-13 23:35:49

Coverage is a problem in my town which isn't good as I'm most likely to get a text from DSs while I'm down town or around school pick up time when they go back after hols. It's a shame its Vodafone like my talktalk mobile contract. If I'd realised that before I might not have bothered to apply because of it.
Internet seems to be working fine.
Texts send quickly and easily (at home).

Fillybuster Wed 14-Aug-13 12:54:01

The very luvverly Sainsbo's mobile helpdesk chappie I spoke to yesterday explained that they can't send the settings through to the Android phones, so have to talk customers through the process to do a manual install.

I've got the Galaxy Fame phone, so interested to double check with anyone else who received that model whether you were able to receive the settings automatically?

Anyway, its now up and running. 2 grumbles: it looks like I have to turn mobile data off manually in order to switch over to wifi, and I simply cannot work out how to get my hotmail account set up on the phone....but both of those (I think) are handset issues, so probably not relevant for the trial smile

Blatherskite Wed 14-Aug-13 12:56:16

Still no phone here so unable to test anything sad

Groovee Wed 14-Aug-13 13:23:28

We have the galaxy fame. What was the problem? I've set it up fully with no help from the help desk.

Fillybuster Wed 14-Aug-13 14:17:14

Interesting. Sainsbury's Mobile wasn't one of the suppliers listed on the mobile data section, so there was no way to turn on the mobile data....the phone bit worked fine, as did wifi, but just that didn't kick in. How did you do it?

Groovee Wed 14-Aug-13 15:09:26

I didn't realise that ds had received a text about texting WEB to a number. So I did that then went into the bit at the top, you swype your finger down the screen and it comes down with bit for turning on mobile data and downloads. I downloaded the software over wifi, then it closed the phone down and rebooted and when I switched it on again it was there and ready and able to use right away. It took me most of the evening though!

AngelieMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 14-Aug-13 15:34:03

Hi everyone, thanks for letting us know how you've been getting on so far! The feedback thread has been opened, so if you could continue the discussion there, that would be great smile
