TheOtherHelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Fri 03-May-13 11:25:14

As part of our partnership with B&Q, we're looking for 20 MNers who have an unloved room in their home that they'd like to revamp. Do you have a sad and tired spare room you'd like to make over? A living room in need of a spruce? Or a bedroom crying out for redecoration?

Here is what B&Q say about their unloved rooms initiative: "This summer, we're launching a new initiative to help Britain say goodbye to its unloved rooms. Most homes have one - a spare room that's more of a cupboard, a tired and broken bathroom from a different era, even an overgrown garden that's become a jungle. With our vast range of home decoration products and simple expert advice, we want more people to see that making a big difference doesn't need to be difficult or expensive. Whether it's picking the right look, choosing the right products, at the right price or simply finding out how to make it happen, we're making sure you'll find it all under one roof at B&Q."

If you're selected to take part you'll:

- Be sent a £300 B&Q gift card to spend as you wish on materials to re-decorate/revamp your unloved room
- Need to be available to complete your room revamp between 14 May and 3 June
- Write feedback on how your revamp is going during that time on a thread on MN
- Need to send in photos to MNHQ of before, during and after the revamp

10 of the 20 participants will also need to film their revamp process on their smartphone (via an app we'll need you to download). Those MNers will receive an additional £25 B&Q gift card as a thank you for doing filming.

B&Q would also like participants to attend a You Can Do It class in store if possible - this would be free of charge but they're only available in certain stores. This isn't essential to taking part but please indicate on the sign up form (link below) which store you could get to if you would like to attend.

If you'd like to take part, please sign up here.

Any queries, please post them here.

Thanks and good luck

Me! Forget unloved room, I have an unloved house. It's going to be hard picking a room to nominate...

Pinkyorkbunny Fri 03-May-13 11:36:06

Done! What I would do to my living room with that voucher blush

lalahotpants Fri 03-May-13 13:18:27

Fab! My little man would be thrilled xx

JennyWren Fri 03-May-13 13:49:00

dahville Fri 03-May-13 13:55:16

This would be a lot of fun! Fingers crossed.

Amylea24 Fri 03-May-13 14:08:50

Me! i would do my living room with the voucher.

choccyp1g Fri 03-May-13 14:18:29

Yes please! I need to do the whole house, but could start with one room.

Done! Would love to sleep in a bedroom that doesn't give me nightmares....

Me too! I have a non-room at the moment, utterly full of boxes to the point that it can't be used for anything.

I want to reclaim the room!

ValiaH Fri 03-May-13 14:52:26

Done- would be great to have a restful bedroom rather than the garish one the last occupants left us

MmeLindor Fri 03-May-13 14:57:39

Am I allowed to enter even though it would be a professional doing the work? I don't know if I want to have plastering a wall as my first DIY attempt.

JParkson Fri 03-May-13 15:45:00

Done smile

AngieQ Fri 03-May-13 20:37:21

Our spare room is grim. We tend to store all our stuff in there. It could definitely need some TLC.

bobkate Fri 03-May-13 21:07:25

Done too smile this would be such a massive help...keeping fingers tightly crossed.

Mintyy Fri 03-May-13 21:15:06

Nah, abandoned it. B & Q want a ridiculous amount for £300!

portiapinks Fri 03-May-13 22:45:06

Done. Fab idea from b&q !!

PuggyMum Sat 04-May-13 09:13:17

I've joined! Would be lovely to make our guest room fabulous for when baby arrives. So guests can have a sanctuary!!

Pascha Sat 04-May-13 09:24:18

Bugger. The last part left to do here is the hall, stairs and landing and it needs a damn sight more than £300 to do it justice. This time last year this would have been fantastic.

LegoAcupuncture Sat 04-May-13 09:59:38

Me! My bedroom is so desperate of a makeover, the wallpaper is from the 80s.

PeneloPeePitstop Sat 04-May-13 10:05:04

Done. We built the DCs a den at the end of the garden, and while it's weather tight it's not welcoming yet. It'd be great to get some furniture and finish it off in time for summer, they'd love a space of their ownsmile.

Done, our front room is a mixture of a dining room, Chinese laundry and a workshop, complete with 70's carpet.

Nehru Sat 04-May-13 11:05:12

all the places are bloody miles away. WOuld cost me in petrol to even get there

CaptainKirksNipples Sat 04-May-13 11:34:39

Done! We currently have a pale green colour in our bedroom. Got a bargain (discontinued line) but we ran out before I realised dp had painted around the bed and wardrobe instead of moving it! That means I can't move anything until we do it all again grr...

I'm in

I'm in, would love to sort my bedroom finally.

I would have ticked yes to video but don't have a smartphone. Seems silly as surely any video would be able to be sent in?

i just did it, but it didnt come up with a message saying sent, so has it gone through properly?

SoupDragon Sat 04-May-13 12:36:40

I wouldn't be able to do it within the deadline - too short notice sad

I hate my bedroom.

I'm applying - have a bedroom that hasn't been redecorated for 10 yrs a very long time

to everyone else thats applied, what happned after you sumbitted it? did it say sent or thankyou or anything?

i am desperate to be picked, my house is so white, plain and dull, it is suffereing from new builditus, plain plain plain!

i think this is a problem alot of people are having right now, in the noughties it was all about making things neutral, and declutting, and now theres loads of people like my family, that are living in dull colourless houses.
and it is time to inject some colour and life

everywhere i look its white, it has good bones though, niced sized rooms, and very nice chunky wooden flooring[lightwood], so 300 pounds would go really far in making a big transformation
dds room is really lovely, only just done it recently, just after christmas, and had this great thread on mumsnet all about it.
and some mumsnetters even asked mnhq if the thread could be moved from chat to home decoration so that it didn't disapear,so thats quite a compliement! turned out fantastic.

infact my only problem with this is choosing which room to do, as i have a bedroom to decorate for the baby i'm currently pregnant with,i want to do something fun and exciting in there and a kitchen diner, thats, yes thats right, you guess it, thats plain white too.

white white white argh
fgs even my talk name is white ! grin

the kitchen is seriously white though, white high gloss slab cupboards, the ones with the long rod handles, white gloss mosaic tiles, and brilliant white walls.
its south facing with three windows and and on a sunny day its actually dazzling!
but seriously its way way too white

please pick me and let me bring some colour and life into my familys life!

ILikeToMowIt Sat 04-May-13 13:10:46

i agree that the deadline is a little optimistic.. but: i think that if we get selected the £300 will be enough of an incentive to get started. would love to give our office a makeover, so i can lock in dh or the kids and not feel guilty we can actually start using it as an office rather than a place to throw stuff into and then close the door and pretend it has disappeared.

IceNoSlice Sat 04-May-13 13:13:46

whiteandiris, I'll swap your white rooms for some 1980s wallpaper if you want? A clean crisp white base sounds great to me right now! The wallpaper in two rooms is so hideous I can't put any pictures up as the pattern is so busy. Think fleur de lis in one and pink flowers in the other. Beyond grim! <pick me, pick me!>

IceNoSlice Sat 04-May-13 13:16:44

Oh and no, I didn't get any kind of confirmation that my entry went through properly. MNHQ, please could you confirm this is ok (and that you got my entry smile). Perhaps you could add a 'thank you for submitting...' Page or message please? It is disconcerting to not receive one.

ice, yes its a great base, but seriously makes me feel insane, although the fleur de lis, and pink flowers does sounds rather than headache inducing!

well hopefully we will bth get picked, your headaches will vanish and i will be slightly less insane grin

oh thanks for replying that you didn't get a thanks for submitting or anything message either.

i am on the verge of filling it in again, yes thats how desperate i am!lolgrin

yes i too would like to know my entry went through ok, if at all possible
thanks muchly smile

ice, what room are you hoping to do?

PavlovtheCat Sat 04-May-13 14:16:15

OK, I have to unloved rooms. the first is the kitchen. It's gonna take a whole heap more than £300 to do that one grin

But the kids bedroom is very tired looking and we so need to get it looking less puke yellow with holes in the ceiling (not real holes, just bits of plaster damage from bodged loft conversion). Some of my friends have the most amazing kids bedrooms and my kids still don't have shelves up blush

So - done!

AnnMumsnet (MNHQ) Sat 04-May-13 14:23:45

IceNoSlice - yep rec'd ok.
After you click complete you just go to this page where you can check out loads of other things do, win etc

musu Sat 04-May-13 14:27:11

I've got a few unloved rooms to choose from. The problem with this though is not having anyone who could do the work and not being able to afford to get someone to do it for me.

LackaDAISYcal Sat 04-May-13 14:45:58

Ooooh, signed up. I run out of steam and funds after starting my living room which hadn't been touched since the 1980s (or in the seven and a half years we've been here)

If we were picked we could get some flooring and curtains, as those are the things that are stopping it getting finished as I think, "why bother doing any more if I can't finish it completely"

IceNoSlice Sat 04-May-13 15:16:35

whiteandyellowiris - bedroom. Good luck to you, fingers crossed we get picked!

IceNoSlice Sat 04-May-13 15:17:08

Thanks Ann smile

mumnosbest Sat 04-May-13 15:39:10

Done. Would be great to revamp the living room especially as we have no kitchen at the mo. Thanks leaky pipe and useless insurance company sad

hi mumsnet ann, can you see if you recieved mine ?
thanks smile

ouryve Sat 04-May-13 16:31:44

The boys' room is desperate. It's next in line after I've finished painting the acres of woodwork on our stairwell white, but I can happily be persuaded to take a break from the monotony of white non-drip satin for a £300 voucher grin

LaVitaBellissima Sat 04-May-13 16:35:28

I would do it but don't think I'd be happy to have pics of my family all over Mumsnet and the B&Q website, if they want that they should be doing far more than a £300 card and getting you to do the work yourself!

ice, yeah, good luck to you toosmile

I've filled in the form.
But I said yes to filming and now I have had a think about it and want to change my mind (typical me)

I'm still ok with taking photographs though (If I'm chosen, obvs.)

AnneEyhtMeyer Sat 04-May-13 18:47:48

I've submitted it and remembered that I meant to say I wanted to put up shelves too!

Must learn to read what I've written before pressing submit!

yousankmybattleship Sat 04-May-13 19:08:38

Pick me, pick me!! Then my unloved house would at least have one loved room!

My whole house is unloved but no point entering as I never win anything plus it wouldn't be fair on the rooms if one got treated

melliebobs Sat 04-May-13 19:36:56

I'd live to do this. We r overhauling our front room. But working full time we'd never have it done in that time scale. blushblushsad

Indith Sat 04-May-13 19:45:26

Oh wow, which room to choose?

We are terrible procrastinators and tend to start job and never finish them so a deadline to work to would be great for us! Dh is off work half term week too so fits in nicely for getting stuff done smile

The whole house is rather ancient unloved really. Artex ceilings, shitty old lightfittings and stuff. Toss up between dining and living rooms really but since the living room really desperately needs new flooring I think I shall nominate it!

bluebump Sat 04-May-13 19:55:47

Oh yes i've signed up for this one!

LeBoob Sat 04-May-13 21:05:12

Done! Would absolutely make me sort a few rooms!

Spirael Sat 04-May-13 22:21:56

I've signed up, am I the only one that put Garden? We don't have one... We have a muddy patch of weed filled wasteland, abandoned and unloved after the builders of our house went bust.

All the venues were miles away though! There's a HUGE B&Q in Leeds, why aren't they running any classes there? I'd quite happily attend!

blondieminx Sat 04-May-13 22:31:18

Done! smile

thanks MNHQ, excellent product test. You're lovely!

blondieminx Sat 04-May-13 22:32:38

spirael exactly! There's a newish, and HUGE store in Colchester - but no classes there either, tsk!

Gigaflops Sat 04-May-13 22:33:09

Done! I'm so excited about this - ice been putting off revamping my box room for ages, but now that DP is moving in I need the space for my soon-to-be step kids! With this £300 I could do a beautiful job... grin

Deni99 Sun 05-May-13 00:43:05

Done! Know eactly what I want to do. Fingers crossed..

Done! Fingers and legs and toes and everything else well and truly crossed!

hurricanewyn Sun 05-May-13 06:40:45

Done! really hope it's me

JakeBullet Sun 05-May-13 06:58:17

Done this, have an unloved garden....very unloved as nobody has EVER cared for it. I am slowly trying t bring it back to life.

janx Sun 05-May-13 12:10:30

When do we find out who has been picked? grin

janey223 Sun 05-May-13 12:13:01

Done, please give DS a bedroom!! And me back mine!

Or if you need more variety my bathroom is vile and even more in need of help! Can I apply for both? :D

I may be able to make the session, it's a bit far and depends on time of day and if I can get someone to babysit DS. Have ticked yes to video but I'd have to hold the camera :-/

magnolia74 Sun 05-May-13 16:42:10

When do we find out? I'm so seriously excited a the possibility of no longer sleeping in the front room and having a room back......

MikeLitoris Sun 05-May-13 19:14:50

Do we have to do the room we put on the form.

I picked the dining room/study but on reflection the garden is possibly more desperate.

The poor dog keeps getting lost in the bushes out there blush

CatOfTheDay Mon 06-May-13 00:53:46

Done - I didn't get a text box for question 7 though! However if I had, I would have put that the manky old wallpaper and carpets need to go, and the saggy wardrobes need ripping out! Then nice shiny new things need to replace them. smile

Janx and magnolia, it can be long before we find out if we are picked, because if we are selected we will be starting our projects in 8 days !! Yippie

Opps, i ment can't be long, of course ! [Grin]

smileyface1978 Mon 06-May-13 10:19:10

Signed up for this a couple of days ago and can't wait to find out who's been picked smile Hoping I get chosen as it's my 15 year old son I want to do a room up for as he's been sharing with his brothers aged 10 and 7 and always had a "make do" bed furniture. This would be a fantastic opportunity for him to get involved as he has aspergers and it's been hard having him sharing with his brothers but now he's got a potential opportunity to help create his own living space where he can chill out in peace and quiet without his little brothers sharing the room.

Can't wait to find out, just hope i have a little bit of good luck our way smile it would be fantastic to give him his own space that he can chill and relax in peace and not get disturbed smile

JakeBullet Mon 06-May-13 13:45:44

Ive picked my garden and I would:

Paint the shed as its a bit tatty
Put up some lovely hanging baskets on the shed.
Sort out the side bed of the garden which is sunken due to 10 years of never having been loved or cared for....I filled loads of black bags with rubbish from the garden when I moved in.
Put in some pretty plants and make a really nice part of the garden for sitting in.
Id also sort out a patch for DS who is autistic but LOVES gardening.

All this is longer term planning but could be done quickly if I had the money. If I don't get picked it will still get done...just more slowly smile

Right, <rolls up sleeves and gets serious> grin

i've uploaded some photos of the last project we did, which was dds bedroom, with a woodland theme.
if anyone would like to take a please look feel free.!!
items used in this make over were

dulux babe paint matt
crown satinwood brilliant white
the paintwork was done before dd was born, so 6 years ago now.

previous to the woodland makeover, we had peppapig stickarounds, which i would also highly reccomend, as they stayed up really well, and came off no problem, with no damage at all.

quilt cover, ikea, £ 18
rug, ikea, £18
frames, ikea £2.50 each, so 7.50 for three
woodland stickers, ebay, 2 packs of, gltc also sell these stickers, but i had paypal funds from selling off old toys £14 per pack, we used two packs, so £28

wooden ladybirds, one pack of 50, ebay, £2
toadstool money box, asda £5
window garland, laura ashely £10

squirrel, hobbycraft, £5

so the costing for this project add up to around £93.50, which includes new bedding and a new rug pretty good i think.

Done - hope hope hope we get picked!!!!

AuntieMaggie Mon 06-May-13 17:46:57

My bedroom needs it!

cornypringle Mon 06-May-13 18:43:18

white your dd's bedroom looks amazing - you've done a brilliant job smile
I hope you get picked - I like your style.

our living room is a total mess. the last time it was decorated was 18 years ago! shock
but we wouldn't have time to do it up - that's the main reason it's like this.
although, that voucher would make it a lot easier to make it a bit more practical (storage and stuff)

TheTempest Mon 06-May-13 19:18:00

Donesmile what wouldn't I give to get my living room done and not have to apologise for it all the time!

oh thanks very much corny, i was hoping someone would take a look at the photos i've uploadedsmile
i do think it looks pretty cool for the budget and the size of the room,i was going for colourful and fun.

colette Mon 06-May-13 21:42:08

white love your dd's woodland bedroom , great theme for play as well as looking lovely. Really impressed with the budget as well.

colette, thats very kind of you, thankyousmile

yeah it does lend itself to play v well, dd has often got her head down on the rug, and i say what are you upto dd?, and she says getting a drink, while pretending to drink water from the stream.
or shes pretending to wash her face in it or something!

or i see her playing with her sylvanians, they are going foraging for mushrooms, or going camping somewhere...

one of my fav things though is the massive amount of storage under the bed.
dd likes the fact the bed is window height so she can nose out of the window!

Breezy1985 Mon 06-May-13 22:13:52

Done, fingers tightly crossed grin

Sokmonsta Mon 06-May-13 23:16:58

Done! I'm itching to swap ours and dc's room to give them space. This would be a great boost to the project.

whilewildeisonmine Mon 06-May-13 23:23:29

Done. This would be a great solution to a lot of problems!

Rockinhippy Tue 07-May-13 00:10:37

£300 wouldn't begin to touch it, so no point sad

MrsBeep Tue 07-May-13 07:03:31

I'm in!

No email here. sad Gutted.

Isitme1 Tue 07-May-13 08:42:17

Done. Would love to have the living room done before dc2 comes along in 2 months!

Mrs beep how know your in ?

CaptainKirksNipples Tue 07-May-13 09:28:13

Is it sad that I have already taken a before picture of a chest of drawers I'm planning to paint in my bedroom. Ever hopeful lol!!

Not really into shabby chic but I quite like pale grey furniture and shiny metal or crystal handles like this

gazzalw Tue 07-May-13 09:46:35

I think people are saying "I'm in" to indicate that they're on for it rather being chosen yet!

Might be wrong though....

Rockinhippy Tue 07-May-13 11:25:48

I've just thought of one room that still hasn't been touched & could work for this amount of money & some DIY & it would mean our current room stuffed full of DHs junk would become my shiny new work room grin

So on second thoughts - yes please - sign me up too

Wandawingsthe2nd Tue 07-May-13 12:40:46

Please, please PLEASE pick me!! My front room got decorated after carefully saving money for ages and then 4 months later we had a leak and it ruined the lot and we have no money to fix it. ME ME ME!!

Babycarmen Tue 07-May-13 12:53:31

This is exactly what we need right now sad Fingers crossed!

magnolia74 Tue 07-May-13 13:11:21

Please please hurt up an choose....... Pretty please smile

magnolia74 Tue 07-May-13 13:11:48

Hurry up not hurt..... See I'm so excited I can't spell!!

oldpolicehouse Tue 07-May-13 13:59:30

What a fun idea, love looking at real homes rather than totally perfect ones in magazines!

janey223 Tue 07-May-13 16:04:02

I love upcycling captain! My side tables are an old tenants reprinted twice already and if we get this they'll be done again for my monkeys jungle!

janx Tue 07-May-13 21:58:04

Any news

gazzalw Wed 08-May-13 13:09:19

The thread isn't closed yet though so assuming people are/can still apply?

Taps foot impatiently...

JakeBullet Wed 08-May-13 13:15:11

I have applied bit as I am not anywhere near the stores where demos take place suspect they might not want me smile but the garden will get done eventually anyhow so I am not too worried.

Sokmonsta Wed 08-May-13 14:50:49

No demo stores near me either. Would be pretty mean to not include people due to that as they've not stated x, y & z areas only.

jen1984j Wed 08-May-13 15:29:05

My bedroom is in desperate need of a revamp. Its very dull and i dont like waking up there in a morning. I would love something bright and cheery to make me wake up with a smile

nicolarae4 Wed 08-May-13 21:31:09

All done and fingers are firmly crossed x

LegoAcupuncture Thu 09-May-13 08:49:20

MNHQ any idea when you're picking people?

TheOtherHelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Thu 09-May-13 09:28:16

Lego - we'll be picking people on Monday (13 May)

<crosses fingers> smile

LegoAcupuncture Thu 09-May-13 10:27:20

Ok, thank you. Will stop refreshing my inbox grin

DreamySleepyNightySnoozySnooze Thu 09-May-13 10:30:13

This is perfect timing! We're moving into a new house, and our baby will get his own bedroom. Unfortunately, it's hideously decorated at the moment, and he doesn't have any furniture to go in it. Hope we get picked! grin

jojane Thu 09-May-13 10:55:46

Would love to do my daughters room, it is a complete mishmash of furniture and styles. Still has baby curtains etc.

smileyface1978 Thu 09-May-13 10:58:05

Fingers crossed that we get picked as I told my son that I had registered to participate in this and he's had so many potential ideas for his bedroom and he's so excited for getting his own room hopefully sooner rather than later smile Let's just hope that we get picked as I know one excited son who can't wait to get started smile Fingers crossed smile

ShatnersBassoon Thu 09-May-13 11:13:17

smileyface1978 -

Rule Number 1 of Mumsnet Product Tests: Don't tell anyone that you've applied in case you're not chosen.

I've learnt that the hard way!

jojane Thu 09-May-13 14:25:21

Yes don't mention it, I got 'picked' to take part in Philadelphia adverts, they even arranged day to come and do some filming and then they didn't bloody turn up!! I had told loads of people. I still refuse to buy Philadelphia now.

moshmoshi Thu 09-May-13 14:34:34

Hi mumsnet HQ could you check if my questionnaire has been received ok please?

Blatherskite Thu 09-May-13 14:49:48

I have an unloved house never mind room! I think my bedroom is the most in need at the moment though. £300 would make such a difference!

jennyn8545 Thu 09-May-13 14:58:34

application complete, too much time on pinterest makes me want to do these kind of things !

janx Thu 09-May-13 15:20:07

I was hoping they would pick on Friday to give us the chance to get to B&Q on Saturdaygrin

Spirael Thu 09-May-13 15:26:38

I was hoping to know before this weekend too, in case I needed to get outside and start frantically digging up the wasteland in preparation for transformation to garden!

Oh well, will just have to force myself to stay inside eat biscuits and MN. grin

AnneEyhtMeyer Thu 09-May-13 15:31:43

I've been doing some browsing on their website just in case and also on Homebase's website in case I'm not chosen.

ritagcabrita Thu 09-May-13 22:02:50

I have a pre-teen strong- headed girl that is very (very) keen in re-decorating her room! But as I had a baby 2 months ago, the budget is tight!

ilikeyoursleeves Fri 10-May-13 00:36:06

Just applied too and I am most excited! Though after completing the form I realised a potential room is the garden too, I'd absolutely love to transform a particular corner of our garden that's sorely neglected, it's as if it doesn't exist just now cos its a funny sticking out bit of the garden that's so easy to forget. Would we definitely have to do up the room we said on the form if we are picked? Though the room I wrote about is in desperate need too...!

I will just be so happy to get picked for any room to be done up smile pick me please!!!!

Bimbledorf Fri 10-May-13 09:36:33

I've just applied for my shameful hallway. Even if the rest of the house is decorated nicely, the hallway gives such a bad first impression that for those that just come to the door or step a foot inside they must think our whole house is a nightmare - how can anyone live like that?! We laminated the floor years ago and have done nothing to it since - including skirting! far too many spiders come to visit

MNHQ my baby bashed the keyboard sending it off before I proof read it - so apologies if it reads a bit weirdly! smile

Bimbledorf Fri 10-May-13 09:38:17

Sunnywithshowers Fri 10-May-13 12:13:17

MNHQ how do I un-apply? There's no way I can meet the deadline...

asuwere Fri 10-May-13 13:38:38

If people aren't being picked till Monday, it'll be at least another few days for the gift card to arrive in post... Makes it even less time to get the job done... What happens if the room isn't complete by the deadline? It is quite tight.

florencebabyjo Fri 10-May-13 16:03:01

All done and waiting. When are they going to choose? My whole house could do with an overhaul with all my Dc's milling about, but it would be lovely to make the lounge a haven of calm and tranquility. Is that asking a bit much of B and Q? x

JakeBullet Fri 10-May-13 16:18:12

I've applied for my garden. It will get done eventually anyhow but does mean I could enjoy it being done a bit quicker. grin

seatfor5 Fri 10-May-13 20:55:46

Have also applied for the garden would be lovely to get the whole family involved smile

littleboo21 Fri 10-May-13 22:18:51

I'd love to transform my bedroom

Chocchip88 Sat 11-May-13 08:08:53

Have the winners been picked yet? Not much time left!

gazzalw Sat 11-May-13 08:15:10

Usually they officially close the thread before they pick the winners so it's not happened yet...TheOtherHelen said Monday, didn't she?

JakeBullet Sat 11-May-13 10:54:52

One thing this thread HAS done is made me think about how I want my garden to look and what I want to achieve. I nw have a plan which I didn't have before this so even if I am not picked I have got something from this. Was in B&Q yesterday and starting to price stuff up so I know what the cost will be over time if I am not chosen....and it's doable thankfully. grin

Chocchip88 Sat 11-May-13 12:41:52

Monday? The toilet I want has a 2 week delivery time. Bah!
I am already convinced I've won smile

LackaDAISYcal Sat 11-May-13 12:48:35

If you get picked Chocchip, I'm sure they could speed that delivery time up for you grin

not long to find out now!!

ilikeyoursleeves Sat 11-May-13 21:59:17

I've just spent the night on the B&Q website looking at new paint and curtains!!!

Positively optimistic me grin

Can't wait to find out if I've been picked <fingers, toes and eyes crossed>

Good luck everyone!

gazzalw Sun 12-May-13 13:35:52

We have just blitzed DS's room - if ever there was one in need of an upgrade it's his....

Bigspring Sun 12-May-13 20:38:38

My daughters room! She's 9 months now and it's still looking like a dumping ground of our stuff and hers!

Bigspring Sun 12-May-13 20:39:21

Or my utility is very grim looking!

Today's the daygrin pick me pick me!

MTBMummy Mon 13-May-13 08:41:26

Done - this would be a perfect gift to move DD into her own big girl room, in preparation for new sibling arriving later this year

janx Mon 13-May-13 09:11:41

Will have to keep checking in - am at work today!!

oh, i'm just checking in too!

FancyPuffin Mon 13-May-13 11:01:26

<Checks in>

LeBoob Mon 13-May-13 11:01:57

Right I've donned my paint wear, go on mum sent do your worst &pick me

LeBoob Mon 13-May-13 11:02:18

*mumsnet bah!

LegoAcupuncture Mon 13-May-13 11:13:48

Adding my name to those waiting. Good luck everyone.

AnneEyhtMeyer Mon 13-May-13 11:28:55

I am currently sorting junk in another part of the house to take my mind off it - at least this will mean part of the house will look better even if I don't win!

JakeBullet Mon 13-May-13 12:40:05

<drums fingers and checks email> grin

ilikeyoursleeves Mon 13-May-13 13:48:43

Anyone heard yet?

Londonseye Mon 13-May-13 13:51:03

Gigaflops Mon 13-May-13 13:53:37

Not yet - holding thumbs AND toes though - cos I really, really need this!

janey223 Mon 13-May-13 13:57:42

Must stop checking emails. Then checking on here.

Telling myself I'm not getting it so I'm not too disappointed!

no, i've not heard anything either, i wonder if we we only get a email if we get picked or if we will get one to let us know if we have not been picked
or perhaps they will write up a list on here on whos in?

AnneEyhtMeyer Mon 13-May-13 14:15:49

You only get an email if you are picked. What normally happens is someone posts on here that they have had an email, so you know you were unsuccessful.

Gigaflops Mon 13-May-13 14:25:50

No news, in this case, is NOT good news then! Off to do the school run - let's hope there's something in the in box when I get back!

Wincher Mon 13-May-13 15:15:29

I'm waiting by my inbox!

Nothing here either sad

smileyface1978 Mon 13-May-13 15:56:08

not received no email - getting the feeling i'm not lucky on this one sad

ilikeyoursleeves Mon 13-May-13 16:01:31

Nothing here either.... yet (tries to remain hopeful)

I've not heard either! Booo

janx Mon 13-May-13 16:30:41

Has anyone heard?

AnneEyhtMeyer Mon 13-May-13 16:37:00

Nothing here yet either.

On the bright side, I have cleared two bin-bags full of junk from my spare room, so all is not lost!

No news is good news smile

smileyface1978 Mon 13-May-13 17:37:03

Maybe it could be tomorrow that people get chosen?

JakeBullet Mon 13-May-13 17:37:08

No news here either...this thread has been fab though because I now know exactly what my plan is for the garden. smile. I had no idea before what I wants to do.

hurricanewyn Mon 13-May-13 17:41:38

They've gone home & forgotten us, haven't they?

Londonseye Mon 13-May-13 17:44:11

They don't have homes do they? They are like teachers, and sleep in the closet.

JakeBullet Mon 13-May-13 17:48:47

Lol at the idea of them going home. Nah...I reckon our ideas are just SO brilliant they are struggling to choose smile

cherrycherry41 Mon 13-May-13 17:50:46

Has no one heard back then?

smileyface1978 Mon 13-May-13 17:51:27

maybe we will check our emails tomorrow and some of us may have a nice surprise smile

FancyPuffin Mon 13-May-13 17:54:54

I don't think they're coming back.

Sad puffin

Gigaflops Mon 13-May-13 18:04:16

I just got so excited because I saw an MN email in my inbox - it's for the bladdy Book Club!!! Talk about anticlimax... grin

<disclaimer - I normally LOVE the book club mails, but not today sisters - not today...>

AnneEyhtMeyer Mon 13-May-13 18:11:19

Oh me too! grin

Sokmonsta Mon 13-May-13 18:11:38

Glad it's no news so fingers crossed still. Would really help us with the great room swap project. I could probably do both for £300.

Doogle2 Mon 13-May-13 18:13:51

Maybe they are keeping the vouchers to do up mumsnet towers?! grin

JakeBullet Mon 13-May-13 18:16:50

Yeah, maybe the decorating budget went on Gin and cooking sherry wink, they might need the B&Q vouchers.

ouryve Mon 13-May-13 18:25:30
LackaDAISYcal Mon 13-May-13 18:28:10

There's another fred....says something like "hot on the heels of 20 MNers being picked by B&Q...." in the OP. So, have the 20 been notified? and if we haven't heard does that mean we're not in? Usually there would be lots of whoop whoop posts from the lucky ones? Or is it a bit cloak and dagger?

JakeBullet Mon 13-May-13 18:33:06

Maybe the lucky ones haven't posted here and are keeping quiet. I have posted on both what I have seen on the other thread of people's revamps.

JakeBullet Mon 13-May-13 18:34:04

Btw ouryve, loving the classy gin storage grin

ilikeyoursleeves Mon 13-May-13 18:40:05

Still not heard here and I too got excited at an email but it was the book club!

Where's the other thread about the 20 chosen ones? Does that mean that I need to spend another few years without much needed curtains? (That I have already picked out from b&q boooo)

LeBoob Mon 13-May-13 18:55:14

bloody book club

LegoAcupuncture Mon 13-May-13 19:03:16

Ha LeBoob, as just thinking the same thing grin

Chocchip88 Mon 13-May-13 19:10:09

Just checking in to see if anyone's heard yet.
MN towers put us out of our misery!

Gigaflops Mon 13-May-13 19:11:47

Nope - nothing! Boo hoo!

wine while we wait, anyone?

LackaDAISYcal Mon 13-May-13 19:19:39
ilikeyoursleeves Mon 13-May-13 19:24:28

Sounds like they've been notified then if there's a thread? But that pink room on the thread has already been transformed?! I don't understand unless it was 60 minute makeover!

Londonseye Mon 13-May-13 19:45:31

Ilike that thread is for something's for people to post things they have already done and be entered to win a voucher..not the same thing tho all b&q

ilikeyoursleeves Mon 13-May-13 19:51:50

Aha ok I understand now, I didn't read the thread through properly!

florencebabyjo Mon 13-May-13 20:30:00

Absolutely nothing! I keep refreshing my email just in case it's come through and I've missed it. Sad, I know...

we can't do the project we wanted anyway, this soon. turns out it's a sypporting wall so would have to get a proper builder in. not a b&q job sad

however, if we did, we could do the hall and landing instead....

LackaDAISYcal Mon 13-May-13 21:15:36

The OP of that thread...

"Hot on the heels of recruiting 20 MNers to revamp a room, B&Q want to hear from all MNers who've got a room revamp story, or a tale of woe about a room that's in desperate need of a makeover"

But no word of who has actually been recruited. Maybe they are too busy DIYing to come and crow about being picked on here grin

MikeLitoris Mon 13-May-13 21:21:04

If people had been told they would definitely be on here posting I know I would be

I should imagine people will be told tomorrow.

LeBoob Mon 13-May-13 21:26:18

Anyone else have that searching for the golden ticket feeling?

LegoAcupuncture Mon 13-May-13 21:29:40

If I get picked, I want these curtains. Sooooo pretty.

kneedeepindaisies Mon 13-May-13 21:34:55

I haven't had an email about this or book club hmm

AnneEyhtMeyer Mon 13-May-13 21:35:13

They might not come on the thread, a lot of people enter these things from seeing the competition elsewhere, like Twitter or a competition forum.

MikeLitoris Mon 13-May-13 21:36:47

The chances of none of them coming on are pretty slim though.

Hq would have posted if the emails had been sent.

janx Mon 13-May-13 21:54:05

I wrote a blinking poem toogrin

janey223 Mon 13-May-13 22:08:21

Lego I want those for my room! If there'd be enough after doing DS's but I was planing lots of upcycling.

Should have thought of a poem, done it in too much excitement and blabbered on rubbish

LackaDAISYcal Mon 13-May-13 22:08:53

Or all the chosen ones are bloggers who don't come on the main boards very often?

Not heard anything either.

They really are pushing the timetable, not many days til the deadline panics about winning and learning to paper for the first time

ilikeyoursleeves Mon 13-May-13 22:27:50

Surely if people had been told there would be some whiff of it somewhere by now?

Fingers crossed everyone for tomorrow, I'm off to bed to dream about curtains smile

OliviaMMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 13-May-13 22:47:28

Right, gin storage vouchers are understandably outwith my remit
But I will see what we can find out in the morning
Thanks for your patience, all

LackaDAISYcal Mon 13-May-13 23:00:53

thanks for letting us know Olivia...I was beginning to think we had been forgotten about, much like my half finished living room!

Ledkr Mon 13-May-13 23:07:11

My e mail account is being an arse do they pm us or just email?
As if I'd be picked anyway <tuts>

gazzalw Tue 14-May-13 06:16:17

Thanks Olivia, you're a star grin

It would have been an miracle if they'd actually chosen people yesterday given that the thread only closed in the morning.....

JakeBullet Tue 14-May-13 06:31:06

Actually B&Q could do quite well out of us. I went in there the other day as I needed some compost, and ended by pricing up what I wanted to do with my garden. Having done that it seems very likely that I will end up going back there to buy the bits I need (unless by some miracle I am chosen). I do need some decent weather though for what I want to do.

CaptainKirksNipples Tue 14-May-13 07:42:32

Agree jake.

my local homebase is better set out for the accessories if you are updating a room rather than fully decorating. they have big displays of cushions and a Laura Ashley dept. they are also next to a big asda and i sometimes have a look about if i have time to kill.

I would go to B&Q if I needed some shelving or tiles because they seem better set out for proper DIY. I need to drive there specifically as it is further away from anywhere but wouldnt go for a wander round. Hope that makes sense!?

I have never looked at wallpaper in B&Q but will probably end up buying it from there even if I don't get picked :-)

TheOtherHelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 14-May-13 09:21:19

Apologies everyone - I clocked off without putting anyone out of their misery last night! We've had confirmation from B&Q now so I'm going to email the chosen 20 now - keep an eye on your inbox (and your spam!)

If you don't hear from me then sorry, you haven't been picked, but we're doing loads more for B&Q over the coming months so there will be loads more chances, including this thread - please join in!

oh no email, guess i've not been choosen then.

AnneEyhtMeyer Tue 14-May-13 09:44:28

Nothing here either. Never mind. I'm still going to do the work I think, I have thought about it a lot.

Spirael Tue 14-May-13 09:52:34

Nothing here either! [puts the spade down] Will have to wait until next year to be able to do up and use the garden.

Ah well, doesn't look like we're getting a summer this year anyway! wink

gazzalw Tue 14-May-13 09:56:41

Londonseye Tue 14-May-13 09:59:17

I just got my email!!! Thank you!!! My bedroom will finally be minegrin

Wincher Tue 14-May-13 09:59:54

Well done gazzalw!

Nothing here either. Ah well, the next two weekends are pretty booked up so I'd have to take time off work to get it done in time!

ouryve Tue 14-May-13 10:09:56

I am now scared. This is going to be a logistical headache. It'll be nice to have the boys' roo sorted, though. It has been bugging me for years.

well done and good luck to all the chosen one

IHateSafeStyle Tue 14-May-13 10:13:06

sad never mind, ds is still to young to complain about the pink room

Geordieminx Tue 14-May-13 10:14:32

I'm in!!!grin

AnneEyhtMeyer Tue 14-May-13 10:14:40

I'll be shopping at Homebase instead.

janey223 Tue 14-May-13 10:18:23

Well done everyone smile

DS doesn't mind kicking me out of bed anyway!

FourLittleDudes Tue 14-May-13 10:18:28

I got an email :-)

My eldest boys will be doing the decorating (aged 9 and 11) should be interesting!

NiniLegsInTheAir Tue 14-May-13 10:21:49

Just had my email and I've just cried in the middle of the office. blush Thank you so much Mumsnet, you have no idea how grateful I am.

LeBoob Tue 14-May-13 10:28:11

Never mind, congrats to the winners tho, I'm sure you'll do a great job!

Congrats to the winners - looking forward to seeing some great results!

gazzalw Tue 14-May-13 10:44:19

Thanks...DW is champing at the bit but think we need to involve DS in the decision-making as it's his room and he's going to be doing some of the work!

LackaDAISYcal Tue 14-May-13 10:54:24

No email here either, but never mind; I have done quite well out of MN recently thanks and B&Q as I recently did a focus group for them and got paid smile

Looking forward to seeing the results. And I'll add my finished room onto the other thread if I ever get it done!

I was picked!!! Absolutely thrilled - sorry to those who were unlucky, though.

No luck here, again. sad

Wowserz129 Tue 14-May-13 11:21:58

Yay, I got picked for something good!

Chocchip88 Tue 14-May-13 12:57:33

Well done those who were picked. May have to save up and get downstairs loo done now as I've been imagining it all nice and non smelly.

LegoAcupuncture Tue 14-May-13 13:13:36

Well done to hose who were picked. Looking forward to seeing everyone's projects.

JakeBullet Tue 14-May-13 14:25:22

I didn't get picked but now have a clear idea about what I want to achieve with my garden and its all thanks to this thread grin

ouryve Tue 14-May-13 14:38:55

I've just started clearing what I can out of the boys' room. I'm knackered already. Maybe I should have delegated bring the bookcase full of books downstairs to DH grin

florencebabyjo Tue 14-May-13 14:57:30

Didn't get picked this time but great for those who did. Have fun with your projects!

ChippyMinton Tue 14-May-13 16:01:39

thanks MNHQ and B&Q

My grotty bedroom is about to become a boudoir unless DH has his say and it becomes a shrine to his footie team. Off to peruse the website. Anyone got any suggestions for a dark, cramped room that would minimise the impact of an entire wall of tired-looking white built-in wardrobes?

Can't wait to see everyone's makeovers smile

janey223 Tue 14-May-13 16:45:44

Chippy you could re-paint the wardrobes and add detailing? You could even use a wallpaper you like and use them as a feature rather than trying to hide them?

Failing that cover them up with panels or voile!

ChippyMinton Tue 14-May-13 17:14:32

Thanks - food for thought. Maybe I could use a staple gun to stretch fabric over the doors? Or, most likely I will just change the door knobs!

janey223 Tue 14-May-13 17:58:17

That'd work too!

ouryve Tue 14-May-13 20:32:39

Door knobs make a huge differece, Chippy. When we moved in, the oak kitchen doors had faffy old fashioned knocker style handles and I hated them. I swapped them for some smart brushed chrome knobs and it made a huge difference to the appearance.

As for brightening the room up, a zingy yellow looks great in small dark rooms - it's a warm colour, but doesn't sap the light out of the room - and really stands out against the white. We have a lot of yellow in our rather long, dark house!

ilikeyoursleeves Tue 14-May-13 22:21:14

Congrats to those who were picked!

I wasn't sad but on the plus side I don't have to run about decorating this weekend smile got lots of ideas though thanks to this thread.

Looking forward to seeing all the results!

ouryve Wed 15-May-13 10:39:38

No voucher, yet. sad

ChippyMinton Wed 15-May-13 15:57:32

What room are you doing ouryve?

DH has offered to wallpaper while I'm away at half-term, so I have to get all the painting done this weekend. Hoping to go shopping on Friday.

FourLittleDudes Wed 15-May-13 16:09:53

I got another email today, we get £25 extra as we are going to upload a video! I'm doing the living room - I want to get a bracket to put the tv on the wall and do a feature wall (yes, I know its frowned upon on Mn but I don't care!) new curtains and cushions, some photo frames to finally hang photos of the children and maybe a coffee table, floor lamp or rug depending on how far I can stretch the pennies smile

FourLittleDudes Wed 15-May-13 16:19:15

Oooh I just got a phone call from a man with a very sexy Scottish accent about the class, and it actually sounds fun, lots of different classes to choose from and plenty of times and dates available - plus he's even going to see if he can arrange facilities so I can take my baby !

Extra £25 here too, yay! I am so excited about this, it's as if I had won the lottery smile

FourLittleDudes Wed 15-May-13 19:09:02

Me too grin why is the b&q mobile site so slow though!

NiniLegsInTheAir Wed 15-May-13 21:49:01

I had a sexy Scottish guy too fourlittle, made my day! grin

The class I want to do isn't until the 30th May though which is cutting things very fine indeed. I'm feeling pretty nervous about this project, the whole room needs doing (ceiling needs plastering, carpet needs taking up and floorboards resanding) before I can think about painting and sprucing the room up. I'll be doing this alone with no family or friends available to help so I'm not sure I can get it all done in time.

Today I found a lovely fireplace in a charity shop that would replace the one in that room perfectly, if I can make my own funds stretch to get it.

Think I'll be needing advice from fellow Mumsnetters as the room needs a different colour - had it painted when we moved in 4 years ago and never been truly happy with it. blush

FourLittleDudes Wed 15-May-13 22:18:26

Was it the lovely Robert? grin

I'm doing it on my own too so its a bit of a challenge but I'm looking starting, bit overwhelmed by how much I'm going to have to tidy up first though! My class isn't until the end of June, he wasn't to rushed about the dates and deadlines and said not to worry about it smile

ouryve Wed 15-May-13 22:25:29

I'm doing the boys' room, Chippy - it's desperate. I've already made a start on the stripping - well the boys had already made a start on that, but I'm continuing with what they've started. 3 hours' work today and I haven't cleared one wall!

I'm doing the video, too - so long as I can prise my iPad out of DS2's sticky little hands!

And I was called by the Scottish guy. I thought he might have been at our store since we're in the NE, anyhow, but he's obviously national. DH is off to do a plastering course on Monday - he'd been considering it, anyhow. DH's cousin is a very good professional plasterer, but there's some jobs it would be handy to be able to do ourselves, since our house is quite crumbly.

LittleDudes - the B&Q site is always slow for me. And I'm used to slow, but the B&Q site is slowwwwwwwwww.

NiniLegsInTheAir Wed 15-May-13 23:04:40

Yes it was the lovely Robert grin

I totally get you about needing to tidy first - and relocate furniture!

I thought we only had till the 3rd June to complete? Or have I got that wrong? Confused now.

Dying to know if anyone else will be going to the Cribbs Causeway store for their class, want to know if I'll meet someone else from our little group grin

FourLittleDudes Thu 16-May-13 09:44:40

My email about the class definitely says that its on the 21st, so maybe they will be a bit flexible with the dates.

My class isn't at the Cribbs Causeway no idea where that is I'm quite looking forward to it!

C'on voucher!

ouryve Thu 16-May-13 10:06:55

I was asked if I wanted to check for courses in June. Our local store happens to be the Durham one, which is handy because it's massive. (we sometimes take the boys there on wet days to look at all the lightswitches, door handles or whatever their obsession is for that week. It's ASD paradise!)

I have my giftcard in my extra grubby little mitts, anyhow. Guess where we're going, later! DS1 wants this paint. It's bright!

FourLittleDudes Thu 16-May-13 10:27:01

Its here!! Oh I am excited grin

I like that paint Our :-)

NiniLegsInTheAir Thu 16-May-13 10:32:18

Gorgeous paint colour - my room when I was a kid was similar, I loved it smile.

My voucher has also just arrived!

ouryve Thu 16-May-13 12:14:52

It' pretty much B&Q orange!

I drew the line at a red ceiling, mind.

Londonseye Thu 16-May-13 13:23:23

Voucher is here! Need to call to arrange a class too! Think we are going Moroccan with our bedroom. The voucher will buy paints and accessories. We need new doors so it might even stretch that far too! Need to learn how to hang them first. I thought we only had until the 3rd June too

ChippyMinton Thu 16-May-13 16:04:01

Nini and Oryve - my bedroom was orange too. Has is scarred us for life when it comes to decorating? grin

Londonseye - Moroccan sounds fab - what colours are you having?

I went to B&Q last night to pick up some wallpaper samples. Now I have six huge sheets pinned behind my bed ranging from black & yellow, red & grey, 3 variations of duck egg & metallic, and a grey & metallic.

Then I fell in love with a red-lined grey silk lampshade...and an acid yellow desk lamp...I want it all!

Anyone making Pinterest board for inspiration?

HappyHippyChick Thu 16-May-13 16:57:24

I still haven't had my voucher yet and am now bricking it about getting everything done by the 3 June shock! I am doing my boys room and I need to get the walls plastered (bil is a plasterer and can come this weekend) but I am supposed to be filming it too and don't know how much/what before footage they want...

Does anyone know how firm the 3rd June deadline is?

HappyHippyChick Thu 16-May-13 17:13:09

Ok I've had my assignment about the videos etc so at least I can get started on that and hopefully I will get my voucher tomorrow!

ChippyMinton Thu 16-May-13 18:28:27

My voucher came today recorded delivery, and a few others have had theirs so hopefully yours will come tomorrow.

Londonseye Thu 16-May-13 19:19:54

We are going with deep blues and lighter orange terracotta tones. DP is going to paint a tree of life on one wall too and we are going to hang individual small photos of our family to make it a family tree. We are aiming bohemian I suppose. We are off shopping tomorrow and doing it this weekend!

gazzalw Thu 16-May-13 21:47:08

I think mine came but we were out...rescheduled for delivery at the weekend.....Need to start loading my online trolley....not entirely sure I can spend £300.......

Anyone got any idea how to do stencil type effects - not sure that I've found those on the B&Q website and think a tweens bedroom should have some....

ouryve Thu 16-May-13 21:51:28

I love those desk lamps, Chippy. DS1 chose the yellow lampshade with the buttons on from the same section. I had bright pink walls in my room when I was about DS1's age (along with Holly Hobby wallpaper on the back wall, because feature walls were trendy back then). They were the sort of pink that, if i looked at it for too long, the world turned green.

The orange we've chosen is going to be darker than my tastes, but the boy wants it, so that's what he's getting. It's the sunniest room in the house, so can take it.

That sounds pretty fab, Londonseye.

I'm hoping the deadline is flexible, too, particularly since we're only just getting our cards and destructions. Plus, there's half term to contend with - when i applied, I had it in my head that it was the week after. I won't be able to get any painting or anything particularly messy done that week since I have 2 boys who need 1:1 supervision. DH has a day and a half off work, next week, but the half day is for the boys' annual review for their statements!

I've made a head start stripping one wall - taken photos as I've gone along, but not videoed the process. It's taken me about an hour per square metre and I ache! I've got some smoothover (half price in wilko's, the other week!) to try out on the wall, but having read the reviews, I may just end up spending some more time with the filler and use up some old cream paint as undercoat.

ouryve Thu 16-May-13 22:15:33

gazzalw, you just need to use a fairly thick paint, use masking tape to secure the stencil and roll or dab the paint over it.

We spent £210, tonight! A big proportion of that was on new shelves. There were Orange cushions on sale, to clash go with the red Poang chair and we couldn't resist the reduced £6 alphabetti spaghetti picture! DS1 also bought some new saws as we have a window surround to at least temporarily tidy up - there's been water coming in around the window (and we have the rotten door frames and crumbling plaster downstairs to show for it hmm). The seal in the glass has gone and one of the windows is cracked - plus it's warped. We can't change it until we chip the render off the outside of the house.

Do you reckon it might just be cheaper and easier to move?

gazzalw Fri 17-May-13 07:56:12

Thanks Ouryve...

FourLittleDudes Fri 17-May-13 08:26:52

I can't wait to get spending and make a start but the preparation part is so boring, I'm having to do it in drips and drabs as I have a toddler and 3 month old at home with me all day and have to fit in school runs for the older children. I have no idea how I am going to hang the tv on my own but I will cross that bridge when I come to it - my plan is to ask the workmen who are working next do to do it in exchange for me not complaining that they start at 7am every morning wink

I'm looking at:

Wall brackets - £70
Wall shelve things - £40
Wallpaper - £60
Curtains - £40
Trunking for wires £30
Paint - £40

I think that's about £300, I have £325 to spend so want to get some picture frames too.

I'm getting brushes from wilkinsons as they are cheaper, and I need to get some screws and wall plugs. Oh and I wanted a floor lamp and need wall lights.... May have to trim down my list and go for cheaper options to fit them in too. Somehow hmm

ouryve Fri 17-May-13 10:26:51

I'm now somewhat alarmed that we only have until May 31st to submit our finished room videos and photos shock If that's the case, then without that final weekend, it might have to be a TV revamp show limited camera angles jobby sad

Please, MNHQ, can we have that extended, so we can at least get the work done in the time that we were told we would have?

Wowserz129 Fri 17-May-13 10:35:20

To be honest I think B and Q are being a bit ambitious on wanting it completed in such a short space of time and all these videos/photos etc...

Spent the morning peeling pink flower stickers off the wall blush

NiniLegsInTheAir Fri 17-May-13 10:50:46

I don't think I'll be finished in time sad.

I'm going to purchase the B&Q 'You Can do it' book - here. Looks like it'll be useful for this project and for future DIY as I'm a total novice! grin

I was looking for a radiator cabinet last night for the room as I've wanted one for ages, was quite surprised to see that B&Q don't actually sell them whereas Homebase sell lots of different ones. What's that about? confused

ouryve Fri 17-May-13 11:07:14

it's been changed! phew!

ouryve Fri 17-May-13 11:08:50

ours has radiator covers, nini - it's a massive store, though.

NiniLegsInTheAir Fri 17-May-13 11:15:47

Hmm - havn't actually checked my local store (which is big but not massive) but they definitely don't have them online. Must hunt smile

Wowserz129 Fri 17-May-13 11:16:12

Thank goodness!! Where did it say when we entered that we had to take videos/pictures with us/children in? I thought it was just the rooms we would take videos off and pictures.

TheOtherHelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Fri 17-May-13 11:21:52

Hi testers - ok - we can extend the deadline to Mon 3rd June at 9am - please make sure you have uploaded all of your footage by then.

Good luck everyone!

ouryve Fri 17-May-13 11:30:32

I'm far from glam, wowserz - wearing old glasses and in desperate need of a haircut, which I've postponed! I may have to take some shots to camera that look like I'm meant to be a mess!

HappyHippyChick Fri 17-May-13 12:23:57

I thought the deadline was the 3rd June? That's not an extension!

TheOtherHelenMumsnet (MNHQ) Fri 17-May-13 12:25:24

HappyHippy - it was 31 May but someone else asked for the weekend to finish off, so we've moved it to 3 June.

HappyHippyChick Fri 17-May-13 12:26:03

I was basing that on this

- Be sent a £300 B&Q gift card to spend as you wish on materials to re-decorate/revamp your unloved room
- Need to be available to complete your room revamp between 14 May and 3 June
- Write feedback on how your revamp is going during that time on a thread on MN
- Need to send in photos to MNHQ of before, during and after the revamp

From the op.

HappyHippyChick Fri 17-May-13 12:34:08

Oh and I should have put a grin at the end of my other post as it sounds like I'm really moaning but I'm not wink I'm just panicking! And I really did think the deadline was 3rd June, must have missed something somewhere!

ChippyMinton Fri 17-May-13 17:26:04

I enlisted a friend's help today and we did a major trolley dash around B&Q - three trolleys blush.

Couldn't decide between two schemes, so bought two of everything and I'm now getting everyone that steps into the house to vote grin

DH will get the casting vote or so i have led him to believe.

I'm really glad you got picked chippy, your always so nice and helpful, it's good to see you get something goodsmile

ChocolateMama Fri 17-May-13 21:48:24

Got my vouchers today and did a shop at a large B&Q a little way from us. Decided to drive the extra distance so that hopefully we would get a larger range of items to choose from. We are doing our DSs bedroom, and got some rather lovely bookshelf wallpaper - quite silvery when it catches the light, plus a lover plantation shutter style blind, paint, brushes and other materials. Came to around £220 and have the extra to spend on soft furnishings another time.

Bracketfungus Fri 17-May-13 23:50:55

Hi everyone, I can't believe this is actually happening!

Mind you, dp and I have already started to disagree about the shelving blush

Happy hippy chick.... I am sure it was always the 3rd of June too.... Strange.

Bracketfungus Fri 17-May-13 23:52:31

Oh yes I meant to ask... How are the 'you can do it' courses free? The wall fixings one I would like to go on seems to cost a tenner. It that right?

Bracketfungus Fri 17-May-13 23:56:09

Looking forward to sharing the experience with you all.. And hope we all get finished on time!

Babieseverywhere Sat 18-May-13 23:13:37

I'm off shopping for paint tomorrow, hope I get the right colours, type, amount smile

I've NC'd for this, hope that's ok with HQ.

Bracket the courses say the cost on the website, but you should have had a phonecall from B&Q to book you up for free.

gazzalw Sun 19-May-13 12:25:37

Aargh...hit the first obstacle.....we are a car-free household and as our two closest B&Qs are at least a 30 minute bus journey away, we wisely opted to do a home delivery of the DIY 'goodies,' with the exception of some soft furnishings which needed to be clicked and collected in-store.

The gift card was due to redelivered yesterday (having missed the initial delivery on Thursday) with Royal Mail and it arrived at 1.00 pm. DW had 'loaded' the trolley to process as soon as the gift card arrived, before we went out to our various weekend social events. Fine and dandy except for the fact that you cannot use gift vouchers online at B&Q. AAAARGH. No time to go to an in-store shop yesterday so doing it this pm, again having to be fitted around various parties etc....And of course this means that only some of the items will be carried home by me and DS - just hoping that the delivery can be scheduled ASAP.

The pressure is on......

What amazed me was that I thought that we'd never be able to find £300 worth of stuff to buy (had already discounted furniture as matching new stuff would have cost the entirety of the budget). Well, DW and DS have 'spent' virtually the whole lot bar about £15.00 worth which we may still need to use if we need to replenish stuff that we've already got in our supplies, such as wallpaper paste, paint brushes....It quite shocked me! And we haven't gone over-board...

Londonseye Sun 19-May-13 12:47:32

DP is painting our Tree of Life on the wall as we speak. I need to spend a day sifting through charity shops for small vintage looking photo frames so we can add family to the tree. We had to buy stuff like new bedding, furniture, so we have spent another £650. But it means our DS and DD can get rid of their rubbish little wardrobes and have the ones from our room when we get new ones. So everyone benefits. DP is using some of our left over voucher money to buy tester pots to paint murals on the kids walls, so we are almost doing a three room makeover out of this. And I am mlooking at new carpets tooblush. I will post our before and after photos once complete which will be before the week is done!

I quite like the deadline pressure. I work to deadlines in my job, and it makes me do things. I always thought it was the 3rd of June too. Which is when our furnitue arrives, so it will be a race to build it and photo graph it. But might just take a photo with our old furniture in case flatpack makes me flappy.

FourLittleDudes Sun 19-May-13 17:38:09

I have been to b&q today and done some shopping!

I bought:

Wall bracket for the tv
Shelf things to go under it
Paint pod paint x2 - that stuff is ££££
Filler and sand paper
Big fat anchor screw things
2 rolls of wall paper
Paste and brush

And then decided my feet were hurting to much and have up for today smile B&Q isn't fun with a toddler and a baby!

I still have £125 left to get either curtains and cushions or wall lights and a floor lamp, I can't decide.

gazzalw Mon 20-May-13 07:37:37

This is not going entirely to plan. DS and I went to our 'local' (about a 30 minute bus journey away) to order the list of items DW had chosen and to pick up the "click to collect" items she'd ordered on Friday - the guys couldn't do the order without the codes (which DW hadn't put on the paper having had to transfer from her 'trolley' list) and the items to be collected hadn't arrive hmm. Now I've got the printed off trolley list I'm going to go into the branch near work and see if I can order/buy there and have delivered to our home sometime this week.

DS and I did however manage to carry home six rolls of rather heavy wallpaper so we can make a start sooner rather than later.... grin

FourLittleDudes Mon 20-May-13 08:23:51 This is the wallpaper that I've gone for, I'm worrying now that its to bright, its only for one wall though. The paint is a neutral colour, but I'm not sure now that it goes. Its just a shade darker than magnolia.

I don't know whether to spend the rest of the money on curtains and cushions, or wall lights and floor lamp. At the moment the wall lights are gold coloured and old fashioned, the main light is silver and modern so they don't match. Ds3 and ds4 will climb a floor lamp though. The curtains are natural stone sort of colour but thin and cheap looking, we don't have any cushions at the moment, although they would probably just get thrown around by the boys. They would hide where the sofa is starting to look scruffy though.

Bracketfungus Mon 20-May-13 17:30:44

I think I've blown the free course then, because the guy asked if I had looked on the website, and I said I'd go away and look. I might have taken the phone number down, but I was having a very busy day at work so if I did I have lost the bit of paper.

I am now dithering which room to do..... I had planned on the extremely unloved spare room which requires roof insulation and built in shelving, but I fear the time/ budget won't stretch to that. Now I am wondering about my bedroom which is grey with a ghastly teddy bear border which I LOATHE. Is the point to transform a regularly used and vile room, or to sort out a neglected corner?

How are the rest of you managing combining this with work?

Bracketfungus Mon 20-May-13 17:32:08

By the way, 4 little dudes, I love the wall paper and definately think it is not too much.

Bracketfungus Mon 20-May-13 17:33:00

And it definately goes.

Bracketfungus Mon 20-May-13 17:35:26

I really like this wallpaper

Londonseye Mon 20-May-13 18:44:24

There is a feedback thread now open smile

Bracketfungus Mon 20-May-13 23:10:09

Would you mind linking it on here? I've lost the insight section!
