Wine? I can test wine!

rubyslippers Tue 22-Jan-13 09:30:03

dischordant Tue 22-Jan-13 09:32:46

I'd love to, if they've produced a low alcohol wine that doesn't taste of flat Shloer or elderflower cordial, count me in!

ThePathanKhansWitch Tue 22-Jan-13 09:36:57

Oooh lovely.Pop of a wine cork is my favorite sound.

Stropzilla Tue 22-Jan-13 09:40:22

Yummy. Done!

Tee2072 Tue 22-Jan-13 09:44:37

Wine? Testing wine? Now that's a MN taste test. grin

jojane Tue 22-Jan-13 09:50:57

Wine which you can drink more of and not get as drunk? Count me in

LaVitaBellissima Tue 22-Jan-13 09:52:43

Wine grin

Done :-)

Someone bought me a bottle of this for Christmas.

Haven't opened it yet.

Didn't realise it was low alcohol angry. As is angry that someone had bought me low alcohol wine when there's nowt wrong with the real stuff.

Happy to add my feedback when I've drank it...will I still be entered for draw or do I still need to sign up and be sent a free bottle.

...hell why don't I sign up anyway and get a free bottle (slaps head in bemusement).

TheTiger Tue 22-Jan-13 09:59:08

I think I would be an excellent wine tester!!

ClaraOswinOswald Tue 22-Jan-13 09:59:17

Would we like to product test wine ?

I anticipate this one being very popular. If selected, anyone fancy testing at the same time? We can have a bar thread.

Jagsy Tue 22-Jan-13 09:59:49

Great! Done.

Lookingforthebrightside Tue 22-Jan-13 10:03:51

Wine testing, I reckon I would be really good at that. I have lots of valuable experience in this area! grin

Done...but it asked why I wanted to taste test and couldn't thinmate of anything sensible thatbdidnt make me sound like an alcoholic grin

TheDeadlyDonkey Tue 22-Jan-13 10:04:46

Done smile

Gracelo Tue 22-Jan-13 10:13:18

I grew up in a wine-growing region. Wine tasting is basically in my genes.

Hullygully Tue 22-Jan-13 10:13:41

I would just like to say one thing:

Altho hats off to their marketing team.

Bet theres way more than 100 volunteers for this one!

Tee2072 Tue 22-Jan-13 10:22:02

Well, that's not going to get you a bottle to try, Hully!

Edwina I think I put 'Because it's wine. Do I need another reason?'

Do you think that was bad? grin

Jins Tue 22-Jan-13 10:22:42

Can't understand low alcohol wine. There's so many alcohol free drinks that actually taste nice.

<disclaimer. I have never found a wine that I'd drink and would rather stay sober if wine is the only option grin>

lubeybooby Tue 22-Jan-13 10:24:44

Oooh wine! grin

Hullygully Tue 22-Jan-13 10:35:40

Tee - they couldn't pay me to drink that stuff. I actually like wine, that stuff is not worthy of the name.

Tee2072 Tue 22-Jan-13 10:42:34

I've had Blossom Hill, Hully. Some of it's been total crap, some of it's been okay.

It's not something I would go out of my way to buy, but a free bottle? Heck yes! grin [lush]

Kenobi Tue 22-Jan-13 10:49:09

I'm interested. hic.

shabooby Tue 22-Jan-13 11:24:21

Done smile

vincenta Tue 22-Jan-13 11:32:36

Done! smile

EllenRose Tue 22-Jan-13 11:33:51

Would love to grin

poorbuthappy Tue 22-Jan-13 11:43:24

Good lord I almost missed this!
When will we know?

Hullygully Tue 22-Jan-13 11:57:01

you won't be "hic" ing - it's low-alcohol. and more like vomming anyway

Where do I sign? Can drink low alcohol wine without messing my knitting up!

I have applied. Won't be picked though I bet.

THERhubarb Tue 22-Jan-13 12:17:00

I don't normally drink it. We tend to go for red wines like rioja or merlot and can't usually stand 'new world' wines. But it's free so I'll have it grin

What's everyone putting in the 'Why should we let you have some' box? confused

THERhubarb Tue 22-Jan-13 12:19:37

You can send me Hully's too. She doesn't like free stuff so I'll have hers and Sparklingbrook's. I'll probably need around 5 bottles actually to feel the full effects so just send the lot through. I'll do a full critique for you.

If you don't fancy drinking alcohol by the way but want something nice then Schloer is ok. Also Ginger Beer is lovely and you can't gulp it down like most soft drinks, you have to drink it slowly and it's perfect for this weather. Crabbies do a fine non-alcoholic ginger beer.

THERhubarb Tue 22-Jan-13 12:20:12

"cause it's free"

Kenobi Tue 22-Jan-13 12:20:26

Hully that's the sound of the normal high alc wine going down.

Oi Rhubarb keep your mitts off my potential bottle of wine. sad

Kenobi Tue 22-Jan-13 12:21:59

I thought Crabbies WAS alcoholic? confused have I been having fake drunk feelings like a 12 year old at an older party?

Frikkin love the stuff though.

Might be a bit late here but very happy to help. You know, in the name of research. Not that I want to drink wine. Much! smile

THERhubarb Tue 22-Jan-13 12:24:54

Crabbies do both versions. The non-alcoholic stuff comes in an old fashioned bottle.

Sparklingbrook just sent me a PM telling me I was welcome to her wine so make sure Blossom Hill know that.

Woofsaidtheladybird Tue 22-Jan-13 12:26:04

Done! Free wine! Whoop! grin

THERhubarb Tue 22-Jan-13 12:27:48

Oh oh sorry guys. Just got an email from Blossom Hill saying that my contributions thus far have been so enlightening that they are going to send the rest of the bottles to me. So there's none left I'm afraid. No point in anyone else completing the survey I'm afraid.

Nothing more to see here now. Off we all trot!

Hullygully Tue 22-Jan-13 12:28:38

Rhubs I love free stuff

As I said up there^^ I couldn't be paid to drink that, unless if was a grand per glass perhaps.

THERhubarb Tue 22-Jan-13 12:32:29

I'll drink 'owt Hully. Including your bottle grin

Besides, you can always add vodka you know. I reckon it'd be nice with vodka. Or how about as a cocktail ingredient? Vodka, Blossom Hill and a touch of lime.

Hullygully Tue 22-Jan-13 12:33:40

<sends Rhubs some meths>

shaztwins1 Tue 22-Jan-13 12:34:41

i love wine me ive signed up grin

THERhubarb Tue 22-Jan-13 12:37:30

<adds hit of vodka to meths for flavouring and downs the lot>

I fucking lurve you Hulls, I really fucking do, fuck the rest of 'em, they iz all beat, beat, beeches, leeches no britches, no beatches... eejits. All of em! <glug>

Blatherskite Tue 22-Jan-13 12:39:04

This one is going to be popular grin

Hullygully Tue 22-Jan-13 12:41:33

None of you have any taste.

parques Tue 22-Jan-13 12:42:22

Don't mind if I do! Cheers! grin

Hullygully Tue 22-Jan-13 12:43:18

White - with hints of citrus, pear and apricot flavours and Rosé - with a floral aroma, ripe peach and strawberry flavours.

dear god

and "Vie" is SWEET

<runs screaming>

Tee2072 Tue 22-Jan-13 12:43:44

Wait, we have to have taste to be on MN? Since when?!?!?!

Signed up hope i get choosen i only get the really really cheap stuff (live within our means ) ohh a posh wine in my cupboard smile

THERhubarb Tue 22-Jan-13 12:48:59

See you are all missing a trick here. You could accept the free bottle and next time it's someone's birthday; someone you don't particularly like, you could wrap it up and give it them as a present!

You know, Blossom Hill would be fools if they didn't pick me to receive all their free bottles.

THERhubarb Tue 22-Jan-13 12:50:14

"posh wine"?

majjsu Tue 22-Jan-13 12:52:26

Sounds good, either one for me as think i would like both.

Hullygully Tue 22-Jan-13 12:54:07

If someone gave me Blossom Hill I would know instantly that:

1. They hated me

2. We weren't going to get along

3. Both

Picturesinthefirelight Tue 22-Jan-13 12:54:44

Love Blossom Hill Wine but.......

I hate sweet wine so don't think this one is for me.

Hullygully Tue 22-Jan-13 12:55:44

seriously, may I ask, you think you would like a wine described as sweet, flower-smelling, with ripe peach and strawberry flavour?

what do you usually drink? Ribena?

Kenobi Tue 22-Jan-13 12:57:46

Oh god is it sweet wine? Hum. I have half a bottle of Blossom Hill rose in my fridge from the summer as the other half gave me insta-hangover.

Serves me right for buying wine from the cash and carry.

lunar1 Tue 22-Jan-13 13:04:42

Done, I love blossom hill!

LeonardoAcropolis Tue 22-Jan-13 13:06:27

Ooooo! Done

Punkatheart Tue 22-Jan-13 13:06:56

It's a dirty job - but someone has to do it!

Break out the crackers, brie and grapes....

donegrin this is the tester thread i have been praying forwink

I've signed up too - I hope I get chosen!

I was born to be a wine taster... My dream job!!

CambridgeBlue Tue 22-Jan-13 13:24:33

Just signed up and am interested to know if lower alcohol = less calories. I'm doing WW at the moment and wine is my absolute downfall and all the snacks I consume when I've had a few glasses.

Punkatheart Tue 22-Jan-13 13:25:59

My glass is always half empty. So I need wine!

THERhubarb Tue 22-Jan-13 13:27:35

You know, it would also be good mixed in punch.

Or used in cooking.

I don't know why more people are signing up for this. I told you all already, Blossom Hill are giving me the rest of the bottles. You are all too late. Sorry. Now jog along.....

The product test of my dreams.
Pick me pick me!

Lyrasilvertongued Tue 22-Jan-13 14:18:31

I could do this very well I think grin. The low alcohol content surely just means you can drink more? looking for reasons to continue drinking as many glasses as possible

JollyRedGiant Tue 22-Jan-13 14:24:13

I am pregnant. I would appreciate it, hq, if you could arrange for this particular product test to happen annually :D

Paiviaso Tue 22-Jan-13 14:34:10

Done! wine

toffeefee Tue 22-Jan-13 14:46:39

Done wine

Done, I was hoping it would be a crate of wine though wink

LadyFace Tue 22-Jan-13 15:00:16

This will be the most popular Mumsnet trial ever! grin

ouryve Tue 22-Jan-13 15:00:48

Very polite, MN. I like being thanked for volunteering to drink wine. I mean, I do like to do my bit and everything grin

THERhubarb Tue 22-Jan-13 15:05:08

I didn't get thanked!

BartletForTeamGB Tue 22-Jan-13 15:08:28

This is nicely timed for the end of my pregnancy. Please pick me! I'd love a cold glad of wine!

I don't think minor got submitted....any way of checking. ...I would resubmit just in case but that would make me sound like an alcoholic.

SirBoobAlot Tue 22-Jan-13 15:58:23

Only 100 MNers to try free wine? This could be an issue... grin

TaggieCampbellBlack Tue 22-Jan-13 16:10:29

Oh. Sweet. Damn.

Any chance of a proper cheese test?

KatieBMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 22-Jan-13 16:14:53

EdwiniasRevenge we've got your form thank you smile

Life is too short to drink Blossom Hill

Glitterfairys Tue 22-Jan-13 16:24:00

Done gringringrin

ballstoit Tue 22-Jan-13 16:29:59

I could possibly be persuaded to try a bottle of wine and if it's low alcohol I may be able to drink the whole bottle in one sitting and still walk up the stairs to bed

gazzalw Tue 22-Jan-13 16:40:08

KatieBMumsnet did mine go through - computer playing up today and when I refreshed (getting impatient) couldn't tell if it has worked okay or not...

This would just be the perfect reward after doing the dryathalon...;-)!

KatieBMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 22-Jan-13 17:22:11

Hi gazzalw, yes we have your application - thank you thanks

gazzalw Tue 22-Jan-13 17:37:35

KatieB thanks. [Grin] at only having nine days left of the dryathalon..

ilovesprouts Tue 22-Jan-13 17:40:59

done, cheers wine.

shrimponastick Tue 22-Jan-13 17:44:51

Due to the vast amounts of wine I get through I would be an excellent tester. smile

DollyTwat Tue 22-Jan-13 17:49:37

Did someone say wine?

Madlizzy Tue 22-Jan-13 17:50:50

I really like wine - the taste, the action of pouring a glass and the "ahhh" at the and of the day. However, it is making my belly rather large and I am in the process of seeking out a low or non alcoholic wine which actually tastes nice. I tried the one type that Tesco supply, and I think I'd rather drink my own wee.

phoebefeb Tue 22-Jan-13 18:04:32

I am hoping to be picked. I don't get to drink much because of my stupid kidney. Let it be meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Hullygully Tue 22-Jan-13 20:52:01

You know the worst thing?

It's aimed at LADIES, Ladies like floral and delicate and rose pink, they like sweet, a little something naughty but nice, and they can't be rolling pissed on the floor with the kiddies, so this is something for the Ladies, for the Mumsies. Rolled out on MN.

<takes hat off to marketing>

I've just opened my Christmas gift. I've had one sip.

Feel free to send me some more to test smile

SecretNutellaFix Tue 22-Jan-13 21:02:03

That's pretty cynical Hully.

If I get chosen, my DH is going to guinea pig with me.

discorabbit Tue 22-Jan-13 21:05:22

it's about time a low alc wine were launched though, wine alcohol percentages are maddenly high these days

lemonmuffin Tue 22-Jan-13 21:16:23

So shoot me Hully.

wine + MN ers... can't you add at least an extra 0 on the end of that number of testers? I mean 100 is hardly enough to find out anything wink

bubby64 Tue 22-Jan-13 22:36:13

I like their "normal" Rose, be very interested to try the low alcohol one.

Skyebluesapphire Tue 22-Jan-13 23:46:26

ouryve Tue 22-Jan-13 23:55:43

Hully - this lady has just had a glass too much of Rioja (Gran Reserva 2005). I like a gutsy red, even in its old age.

I'll still try it for free, though, even if it's so I can say, without compunction "no, it's shite"

The "mulled wine" I was bought once simultaneously cleaned and stained the loo, mind.

MildredIsMyAlterEgo Wed 23-Jan-13 00:01:03

Wine you say - count me in smile

I think you should nice us at least 2 bottles...after all it does have half thre alcohol content grin

paranoidandroidwreckmyownlife Thu 24-Jan-13 09:21:46

Ooh, I love a sweet rose wine, this could be good!!

gazzalw Thu 24-Jan-13 12:24:33

Surely this will close soon - I do hope KatieB tells us how many Mumsnetters have applied....I get the decided impression we're a load of dipsomaniacs....grin

BIWI Thu 24-Jan-13 15:07:54

Hully - I fear this thread is doing nothing for your blood pressure grin

I will stand shoulder to shoulder with you on this one. I can't think of anything worse than low alcohol, sweet, floral wine. Sounds like Febreze in a bottle.

Fillybuster Thu 24-Jan-13 15:38:44

I don't believe that anything low alcohol, floral and slightly sweet could possibly be drinkable, but I'm on diet and willing to give it a go --sacrifices self on altar of MN product tests==

<polishes halo>

(Also quite up for providing some <ahem> honest feedback if it turns out to be pigswill not as lovely as claimed)

gazzalw Thu 24-Jan-13 15:57:50

wink Fillybuster! Yes, after a month off the booze I will expect a refreshingly chilled glass of vino (that's if I get chosen which is unlikely on this year's form so far!)

LiveItUp Thu 24-Jan-13 16:59:01

Late to the party as I so often seem to be (damn work getting in the way of surfing the net) ..... application done!

I take it you don't like this stuff then Hully?

Fillybuster Thu 24-Jan-13 17:36:00

Hi gazzaw ....I'm not holding my breath either....2012 was a good year though, eh? grin

gazzalw Thu 24-Jan-13 17:37:21

Indeed grin!

Febreze in a bottle...for the laydeez. That's what it is. Wow.

justamoment Thu 24-Jan-13 20:59:38

Yes please, I'll give it a go...

bemybebe Fri 25-Jan-13 00:53:53

I really think they should change the name. Vie sounds vile as someone pointed out. I misread it as Vile before thinking there was a typo and only then understood it is actually meant to be 'vie'.

Heathie84 Fri 25-Jan-13 01:35:19

Very intrigued by low alcohol a new Mum I have just stopped breast feeding and worried about how I am going to handle alcohol when I start socialising again!! One drink and it might be hometime for me!!! blush This could be a happy medium so up for giving it a try...sounds good wine

leggie1995 Fri 25-Jan-13 01:38:37

Grr... Would loved to of tried this as I love white blossom hill smile would of like to of tried this one as never had a low alcohol one. Only another 4 months till I'm 18. Will have to send my partner out and see if there is any in our local supermarket grin

DizzyLyn Fri 25-Jan-13 05:51:36

Would love to have a try - could be a great summer wine or mid-weeker

Tusty Fri 25-Jan-13 10:33:53

Ooh, would love to try that.

Norsk1 Fri 25-Jan-13 11:24:34

Yes please...

IzzieA Fri 25-Jan-13 11:38:29

I really need to try this. Full-strength wine is giving me a real hangover, even after a couple of glasses! Must be my age!

jackies4 Fri 25-Jan-13 11:40:01

definately interested in trying low alcohol wine. The beer version is awful so I hope the wine is better. Send m some & I'll let you know hmm

JS06 Fri 25-Jan-13 11:45:20

Happy to volunteer, love the thought of low alcohol drinks so long as they taste the same. Blossom Hill is a well known brand and this new direction may well just tap into a whole new market.

Cubaba Fri 25-Jan-13 11:48:50

Yep...signed up. Chilling my wine glass in anticipation of good news...

michelleblane Fri 25-Jan-13 12:03:39

Happy to take part. How do I sign up?

wehavearaspberry Fri 25-Jan-13 12:15:16

And the downside to this is what exactly???? Surely there's a catch to being offered the chance to drink wine!

Mine came today, just waiting for the kids to go bed and me and a friend will be trying it out (plus another 5 bottles) smile

LadyFace Sat 02-Feb-13 21:02:22

I have the rose. Just had a glass with dinner and I can confirm that I like it! It is sweet but not too sweet and you get a good hint of the peach and strawberry flavours. It does not have that sharpness that you get with some roses, maybe due to the alcohol content.

As the flavours are subtle it would probably compliment a lot of different kinds of food. It is also going nicely with kettle chips right now! I would buy this again. I will report back in the morning to see how I feel after half a bottle!

Oh gaw'blimey. It's a bit good. connoisseur
I've got the rose and DP and I are thoroughly impressed.
Oh how you spoil us Mumsnet. Wine that's free. And almost bfing friendly!

Absolutely delicious but it is not actually wine.
It seems to be wine, fizzy water and some flavours.

Very tasty and refreshing, but u was really under the impression that it was wine, although it doesn't actually say it IS anywhere.

Confusing, but tasty

FanFuckingTastic Sun 03-Feb-13 11:27:31

Last night it was really tasty. Mmmm.

Mine wasn't fizzy?? Norks?? Was yours fizzy?

Ry slightly fizzy. It was the white one and I suppose 'gently petillant' would be the pony description smile

Thank you for the bottle of wine. We tried our on Friday night and again over the weekend.

The questions:
1. I so wanted to like it - the bottle looked beautiful but I'm afraid I was really disappointed. I guess it comes down to expectations - I expected it to taste like white wine and it didn't. The drink itself is very thin on the palate, no depth of flavour. Reminded DH and I off a cheap white wine spritzer the next day when it had lost its fizz shock. We also felt that the fruity floral flavours were not coming from the wine itself but from the added flavouring which was really off putting.
"Reduced alcohol wine based drink with flavourings" - so not wine really. Would have been nice to know where the wine was from and what the flavourings were - basically ingredients please! Norks I did recognise the slightest hint of fizz but in this case it just gave the impression that it was meant to fizzy but had gone flat.

I think I would probably prefer to buy a decent wine that I know is nice and then to add some water or fizz to it.

2. the taste of vie - thin, light, refreshing, good in summer, floral and a bit fruity.

3. I couldn't recommend it to anyone really as I feel there are much nicer drinks out there.

4. If I did like it I would drink it anytime really- I like wine but hate feeling drunk. If I'd enjoyed it, it would have been the kind of thing I'd like to have been able to order in a restaurant.

5. Didn't know - not fussed about calories as I don 't drink much anyway.

6. I really think clearer and more informative labelling would help out a lot - we like to know where the wine is from and what the added bits are - also perhaps what percentage of the total volume is wine, what water and what flavourings.

Right, have enjoyed the wine two evenings on the trot and had two 'morning afters'. smile

Here are my answers to the questions:

1. Which Vie variant did you try and what did you think?
I tried the Rose variety and enjoyed it very very much!

2. How would you describe the taste of Vie to your friends?
I would say that it tastes like a gentle, sweet Rose wine, but lighter and not as wine-y (yes I know, that is not a word grin ) In fact I may even describe it as a cross between Rose and Schloer...

3. Would you recommend it to them?
Yes, I would. Several of my friends love Rose wine so I would probably take a bottle (or two) to a get-together or book club group and encourage them to try it.

4. What would be the perfect Vie time for you? I really only drink at the weekend so for me the perfect Vie time would be early evening, when dinner is on the go and dh and I sit at the kitchen table enjoying a chat, a drink and a pre-dinner nibble.

5. Did you know Blossom Hill Vie has 30% fewer calories?
No, I did not know that. I had assumed it would be a bit less calorific due to containing less alcohol bit I did not know it was 30%. This is perfect for me as I am currently on a long-term (slow but steady) weight loss regime.

6. Any other thoughts you'd like to share?
Other than to say that I enjoyed the wine more than I thought I would, I will definately be buying it again. However, I had a look in Sainsbury today and felt that the price of £4.99 a bottle is a bit steep when compared to other, full-alcohol, rose wines. I would be happier to pay around the £4 per bottle mark. In fact, I had put Vie Rose on my shopping list but after seeing the price I chose a box of Gallo White Zinfandel which was on offer and worked out at £4 per bottle. More alcohol, more calories, not really what I wanted, but I have to take the monthly family grocery budget into account!

Thank you for letting me try the wine smile
