NOW CLOSED: Do you cook for your family? Testers needed for new Bisto Stock Melts - receive a cooking pack worth £30 and chance to win £100 for feedback

(172 Posts)
AnnMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 12-Sep-12 13:24:58

We've been asked by the team at Bisto to find up to 30 MNers (UK only) to try out their new Stock Melts. These hit the shops in Sept so testers would be among the first to try them out.

Bisto say "New Bisto Stock Melts are little portions of concentrated stock that contain real meat juices, herbs and seasoning to deliver extra depth of flavour and enhance dinnertime dishes with a richer taste. Whether your family enjoys traditional British fare such as home-made soups, pies and casseroles, or meals from other cuisines which have become British favourites like spaghetti bolognese or chicken risotto, there's a Bisto Stock Melt flavour to suit everyone.

Packed in individual pots, Bisto Stock Melts can be added directly in your cooking without the need to dilute them first - so no mess, no fuss - they just melt deliciously rich deep flavour directly into your home cooked meals."

If you're selected for the test you'll be sent a pack containing the full selection of products, as well as ingredient suggestions, recipes and kitchen utensils to help you create some delicious family meals (the pack is worth £30).
You can choose from a meat pack or vegetarian pack. In terms of any allergies: the on pack advice is: contains barley, wheat, gluten, celery.

We're looking for a range of people for this - people who cook for the family at home and who think they could include these in the regular weekly menu.

Selected testers will need to try the Stock Melts and then add feedback at least twice on what they cooked and how they found the Melts - you will be emailed a link to the feedback thread. Please only apply if you are around w/c 24 Sept to add your feedback.

In addition each tester who adds feedback as required will be entered into a prize draw where one tester will win a £100 voucher for Amazon

If you'd like to be considered please sign up here

Thanks and good luck

I've signed up. I'd like to know if they have MSG int hem though and also their salt content or if they are doing a low/no salt one (small baby).

CouthyMowWearingOrange Wed 12-Sep-12 14:35:45

Done. I usually use Knorr, so it would be interesting to compare the two.

CouthyMowWearingOrange Wed 12-Sep-12 14:36:28

The gluten thing is a shame, as Knorr are GF.

How much salt per pot, and how many pots would you use in a recipe for 4 adults? ie what salt would be transferred to the kids?

Done!

I use Knorr Stock Pots atm so this would be a good comparison.

RedKites Wed 12-Sep-12 16:38:38

Probably not going to enter as DC2 is due the week you want feedback, so it's unlikely much cooking is going to get done. However, like a PP I'm interested to know what the salt content is - it'd be good to have more low salt stock options.

CJCregGOLDandORANGE Wed 12-Sep-12 19:11:38

I would love to but only if they are low salt (BLW). The only low salt stocks are cubes which I don't like, or make my own which takes forever!!

Fillybuster Thu 13-Sep-12 10:38:38

Done - a veggie stock which doesn't need loads of water would be fab!

AnnMumsnet (MNHQ) Thu 13-Sep-12 11:31:37

Hi
Reply from Bisto

Storage Store in a cool dry place. Once pot is opened, keep refrigerated and consumer within 2 days.

Salt Each 100ml of prepared stock contains 0.65g of salt- which is 11% of an adult’s guideline daily amount

Allergy advice is:
Beef
Contains barley, wheat, gluten

Chicken
Contains barley, wheat, gluten

Vegetable
Contains barley, wheat, gluten, celery

If you have specific ingredients you need me to check please can you PM me?

thanks

Puppypoppet Thu 13-Sep-12 12:42:45

Have completed it! Interesting to see if they are better than the old fashioned Oxo cubes I use.

TwoIfBySea Thu 13-Sep-12 12:55:43

Hmmn, sounds yum. Have just bought a slow cooker, have no idea what to cook in it though so this would be great - if only!

notgotanyanswers1 Thu 13-Sep-12 13:19:06

I love cooking and I'm always trying new stuff to try and tempt my families appetite, I cook for 3 generations every Sunday so I have to please everybody, so I would love to give them a go, anything that makes my life a little bit easier is always welcome

We're Oxo lovers in this house, probably bung at least 1 in most meals! Would be good to try an alternative. grin

I would love the opportunity to test these. I am an avid cook and pride myself on cooking homemade meals for my family. Good ingredients are very important to us. These sound fantastic as they use real meat juices. We grow our own fruit, veg and raise chickens for eggs. It is important my children understand food too.

Oh god, I've just realised. Shit, I applied for this but got Oxo and Bisto mixed up, told them I wanted to be Bisto Mum like the advert! grin guess I won't be picked!

Izzybuzzybuzzybees Thu 13-Sep-12 20:44:57

dreams that's quite funny! Ha ha!

I've done the survey and would love to try them!

Izzybuzzybuzzybees Thu 13-Sep-12 21:13:38

In fact scrap that dreams it is BISTO!!

blondieminxwithGOLDandORANGE Thu 13-Sep-12 21:14:08

Done smile

Would also be interested to see the salt content....

ceeveebee Thu 13-Sep-12 21:16:53

It's quite salty - too salty for young children IMO (Ann posted salt content above 100ml = 11% of adult rda therefore 2/3 of a baby's rda)

Indith Thu 13-Sep-12 21:29:20

Tis pretty salted. At least with cubes ou can put half or quarter of a cube in which is what we tend to do.

Cookie32 Thu 13-Sep-12 21:30:48

what a fab new product, would love to give them ago

HQ.... When will we hear??

gazzalw Sat 15-Sep-12 12:48:12

Presumably early next week if they are wanting feedback w/c 24th September?

Tee2072 Sat 15-Sep-12 13:05:43

I think you might find that the salt content is comparable to the cubes, but I could be wrong.

And if they are little pots and keep in the fridge for 2 days, you can also only use part of one, couldn't you?

In any case, I really just popped on to see if people had heard yet! Guess not. grin

nextphase Sat 15-Sep-12 14:46:40

My stock cubes contain .97g salt per 100ml of made up stock, so yes please MNHQ, I'd like to stay in the list after my salt level question.

It might be 2/3 of a childs daily allowance assuming they eat food containing 100ml of stock. Mine are quite good eaters, but can't see them eating that much.

Cheers for the info, Ann

ceeveebee Sat 15-Sep-12 22:31:07

Yes its comparable to normal cubes and other stockpots but certainly not low salt which was originally said above. And 100ml is not really that much liquid to use when cooking a casserole etc - I would use 100ml between my 10 month old twins.
So won't be good for anyone with babies/younger children

Tee2072 Sun 16-Sep-12 06:16:11

Sorry, where does it say low salt? I'm not seeing it.

ceeveebee Sun 16-Sep-12 08:22:42

Ann said she thought they were low salt

Tee2072 Sun 16-Sep-12 08:30:54

'Thought they were' is hardly the same as saying 'they are low salt'!

They aren't promoting them as for babies though, are they? Yes, for families, but plenty of families don't have young children.

But if you don't want them, I'll take yours!

grin

ceeveebee Sun 16-Sep-12 08:51:35

Yes, of course I know but I am just pointing out that these, like most stocks, are too high in salt for young children, so yes please take mine and I'll carry in using Kallo low salt for now!
It would just Venice if someone invented a low salt beef stock and I though this was going to be it when I saw the possibility they were low salt!

Tee2072 Sun 16-Sep-12 09:02:08

Doesn't Boots do one? They certainly used to! Or maybe it was only chicken...

You could make you're own?

grin

gazzalw Sun 16-Sep-12 14:12:24

Yes, sure if you look in the Baby Aisle in Boots they have baby/toddler suitable stock cubes - never tried them though!

RedKites Sun 16-Sep-12 19:02:06

ceeveebee the Kallo range does include a low salt beef stock.

ceeveebee Sun 16-Sep-12 19:49:51

Aha thank you! I've only ever seen chicken and veg ones in the shops so have had to make beef myself!

browny Wed 03-Oct-12 09:44:18

Ooh, just had a huge box delivered and didn't have a clue what it was! I didn't receive an e-mail, so it was a nice suprise grin. I chose the meat variety and received three different boxes of stock melts, three lovely cooking utensils, garlic and rice! Now...what to cook for the tea? smile.

CouthyMowWearingOrange Wed 03-Oct-12 09:44:40

phantomhairpuller Wed 03-Oct-12 16:12:02

Just had my delivery grin lovely lovely. Beefy spag bol for tea me thinks wink

phantomhairpuller Wed 03-Oct-12 16:16:40

Ooh, I should add, I didnt receive an email, though I did have a phonecall from the bisto lady. annmumsnet how do I leave my feedback?! X

Oooo I have come home from work to a huge parcel - just the same as browny describes. Too late to use today, but I will use a beef one in the slow cooker tomorrow. I'm really looking forward to it now smile. I think I might try the vegetable rissotto as well - there is a recipe on the back of the rice packet which sounds nice.

Wow! Absolutely gorgeous packaging, lovely cooking utensils, risotto rice, garlic and loads of stock!

Planning a chicken risotto, a cottage pie and a spag bog this week. The stir fry on the veg stock pack sounds nice too.

CouthyMowWearingOrange Wed 03-Oct-12 18:35:26

Love the utensils! My old fish slice had a broken handle.

I like the look of the chicken risotto, and am planning a vegetable soup too.

The packaging is better than Knorr's - you can do it up again after using one. First plus point for me!

Has anyone else tried the beefy one yet? I made meatballs in my Actifry and it was gorgeous! It was like the difference between seeing a film on telly or watching it in 3D in a surround sound cinema grin

I think I may be a convert smile

Oh noes! I killed the thread with my twattiness sad sad

soremummy Thu 04-Oct-12 16:18:52

Almost meatballs in an actifry? I've only ever done homemade chips in mine i think I need recipes for it Sounds like I could use some of the stock pots in it

Oh yes, soremummy - I always use the Actifry for meatballs and bolognaise and mince in gravy etc as it reduces the sauce beautifully. I just chuck in the meat, vegetables, stock, garlic and herbs and it stirs it all for you. Magic!

soremummy Thu 04-Oct-12 18:00:02

Where did if get the instructions from for doing bolognaise? I might try that with a beef stock pot

Um. I just make it up tbh. Usually I brown 500g of mince for 5-10 minutes then add a can of chopped tomatoes, garlic, stock, chopped onion and peppers, seasoning and tomato purée (sometimes half a jar of Dolmio smile) and cook it for 15-20 minutes while the pasta is simmering. You just need to keep an eye on it in case you need to add a bit of water.

CouthyMowWearingOrange Fri 05-Oct-12 00:18:22

Made my own chicken risotto tonight. Added peppers and sweetcorn. Was yummy. Wasn't at all salty - in fact was less salty than the pan I made with Knorr. (Had to do two pans as DS1 can't use the Bisto as not GF).

I have decided that the Bisto are definitely more 'chickeny', and am a convert!

Yum!

Hulababy Fri 05-Oct-12 13:49:24

Received my parcel today from post office. Tried to deliver Wednesday. Is there a link to a test feedback thread.

Like that I have meet and veggie melts as ideal for us. I don't eat meat but dh and dd do.

Love my Joseph Joseph utensils - fab bonus. Already have some and these go great.

So is next week okay to start using?
