NOW CLOSED: Lyclear head lice Treatment Shampoo: Feedback thread: now with final questions added

KatieBMumsnet · 30/08/2013 16:07

This thread is for the 100 unfortunate MNers who have recently experienced head lice and trialled Lyclear Treatment Shampoo.

Here's what Lyclear have to say about their product, "Lyclear Treatment Shampoo is and is as easy to use as washing hair. (1) The unique double action formula suffocates and dehydrates head lice and their eggs and is free from insecticides. The shampoo acts in a purely physical manner, ensuring the head lice do not become resistant to the treatment."

Lyclear Treatment Shampoo is suitable for adults and children over 2 years of age. Note: You should only use Lyclear Treatment Shampoo if you have live head lice. Do not use if allergic to any of the ingredients.*

So if you're a tester we'd like you to add feedback to this thread at least twice: Once when you first use the shampoo and once again after the second application (7 days after the first).

Lyclear says after checking the hair for lice with the fine toothed comb enclosed you should evenly apply the shampoo to dry hair, massaging from root to tip, paying particular attention to the neck and behind the ears. Leave on for 10 minutes then wash and rinse the hair thoroughly. Remove dead head lice and eggs with the fine toothed comb, thoroughly cleaning after use. Repeat the treatment after 7 days.

Please note your comments may be used by Lyclear in marketing material, on their website and possibly elsewhere.

So for your first feedback post please share:

Firstly about head lice:

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age
  2. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?
  3. What treatments have you tried in the past?

Secondly about Lyclear Treatment Shampoo:
  1. How easy did you find using the fine toothed comb?
  2. How did Lyclear Treatment Shampoo compare to other treatments you've used in the past? Please note Lyclear is clinically proven to kill 100% of head lice after the second treatment is complete. For each of the following statements please say if Lyclear Treatment Shampoo was better, about the same or worse than other treatments you may have used:

a. Effective at removing most head lice and eggs
b. Ease of use
c. Convenience
d. Greasiness of treatment
e. Ease of washing out treatment
  1. Please provide more details if you felt Lyclear Treatment Shampoo was worse than previous treatments for any of the above:
  2. Did you like the fragrance or smell of Lyclear Treatment Shampoo?
  3. Any other comments on initial use?
  4. Did your child like the shampoo? Please say what they thought

All selected testers who add at least two lots of feedback will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win £250 worth of Love2Shop vouchers.

Thanks and good luck (with everything)

  1. 11yr old girl has had nits loads of times but this is first outbreak for about 2 yrs
  2. 40 something mother. Has had nits before

Have previously used chemical stuff ( many yrs ago) but did not eradicate. Successful wet combing is my choice now. Wanted to try this for a change

    Comb small, prongs too flexible
Shampoo effective try hard to assess as no nits came out (had wet combed last night)

I will be alternate night wet combing and it will be interesting to see if any appear

It is like baby oil. Runny and tricky to apply to dry hair. Bit messy tbh and hands covered and slippy to hold bottle. Smells ok. 200ml will only do two of us. One short bob and one shoulder length.

About to try and wash it out...

first application today. nits did come out dead when combing after use which was good as previous chemical products doesn't always actually kill the lice.

as said comb is to bendy and the shampoo needed a good rinse, didn't wash away as easily as I'd have liked.

will update after next application in 7 days
so far so good.

TiredDog · 30/08/2013 22:16

I'd persevered with wet combing not knowing if I'd be successful in trialling this. Which is possibly why...No nits found after shampooing. I used shampoo and conditioner and then wet combed again. Bit oily and I'd have preferred a mousse application medium.

Previous chemical stuff was vile and strong. I felt physically unwell after use which is why I moved to wet combing (plus its more successful).

I lack confidence to rely on this alone but am going to give it 7 days trial without wet combing and see what happens.

Firstly about head lice:

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age. Treated dd age ten
  2. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice? Unfortunately no she's had them about six or seven times before
  3. What treatments have you tried in the past? Hedrin Full Marks Nitty Gritty comb

Secondly about Lyclear Treatment Shampoo:
  1. How easy did you find using the fine toothed comb? The comb is useless. The teeth are too thick and the gap between them too big so I used one we already have.
  2. How did Lyclear Treatment Shampoo compare to other treatments you've used in the past? Please note Lyclear is clinically proven to kill 100% of head lice after the second treatment is complete. For each of the following statements please say if Lyclear Treatment Shampoo was better, about the same or worse than other treatments you may have used:

a. Effective at removing most head lice and eggs Poor, even though it took half a bottle of lotion and I left it on longer than ten minutes the majority of lice were still alive. The comb supplied wouldn't have removed eggs anyway.
b. Ease of use It's easy but what's the point of ease when it doesn't work?
c. Convenience Not terribly because I am going to have to treat dd with Hedrin anyway.
d. Greasiness of treatment. Not as greasy but now I see the greasiness as being a positive because at least Hedrin works.
e. Ease of washing out treatment Reasonably easy but it really has been a waste of time I could have used Hedrin and washed dd's hair two or three times and known it would have worked.
  1. Please provide more details if you felt Lyclear Treatment Shampoo was worse than previous treatments for any of the above: It doesn't kill the lice and the comb is worse than useless.
  2. Did you like the fragrance or smell of Lyclear Treatment Shampoo? it's not bad dd said it smelled like urine.
  3. Any other comments on initial use? Will do a second treatment but it won't be a treatment I would buy or recommend
  4. Did your child like the shampoo? Please say what they thought Dd thought it smelled like urine and she was fed up because the lice were still alive.

We are still waiting for our trial kit to arrive. I conditioned and nitty gritty'd again this evening.

From the reviews above I think I will use the nitty gritty comb instead of the one that is supplied.

Secondly about Lyclear Treatment Shampoo:
  1. How easy did you find using the fine toothed comb? The comb is useless. the gaps are too big, i used my nitty gritty comb.
  2. How did Lyclear Treatment Shampoo compare to other treatments you've used in the past?

a. the comb didn't remove anything, most lice were dead
b.easy to use, like only 10 mins
c. Conveniencegood
d. Greasiness of treatment. Not bad, not as bad as full marks
e. Ease of washing out treatment- ok did twice
  1. Please provide more details if you felt Lyclear Treatment Shampoo was worse than previous treatments for any of the above:it seemed to kill most, think there must be lots of eggs left, time will tell
  2. Did you like the fragrance or smell of Lyclear Treatment Shampoo? it reminded me of hair dye smell
  3. Any other comments on initial use? if i am not itching in the next 3 days i will buy again

Firstly about head lice:

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age

Currently I'm treating 6 yo DD, I am feeling itchier by the minute though so may well be treating myself, too.
  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?

This is the millionth time she's had lice... Well maybe not, but they've been here on and off for the past 18 months.
  1. What treatments have you tried in the past?

Full marks, hedrin, and mainly nitty gritty wet and dry combing, depending how I feel at the time!

Secondly about Lyclear Treatment Shampoo:
  1. How easy did you find using the fine toothed comb?

I used our nitty gritty comb, didn't have any faith in the comb you provided, sorry!

I found one whole live louse after combing through the first application and loads of eggs. No dead lice - think I combed most of the live ones out beforehand.
b. Ease of use
Fairly easy to use although I didn't see the tiny screw top at the end of the application spout and undid the whole lid at first.
c. Convenience
Bottle is easy to hold, long applicator spout is convenient to use.
d. Greasiness of treatment
Not as greasy as other treatments we've used and washes off your hands easier, too.
e. Ease of washing out treatment
Needs a lot of rinsing but that's quite usual. Hair doesn't seem greasy afterwards, which is good.
  1. Please provide more details if you felt Lyclear Treatment Shampoo was worse than previous treatments for any of the above:

I was surprised to see a live louse after the first application when the packaging suggests that it kills all lice after one go.

  1. Did you like the fragrance or smell of Lyclear Treatment Shampoo?

Yes.
  1. Any other comments on initial use?

N/A
  1. Did your child like the shampoo? Please say what they thought

She hates having her hair washed and made a massive fuss when some of it got in her eyes. Not sure if its strictly Lyclear's fault though!

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age Boy all 5- 11 yrs.
  2. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?

No, recurrent problems since the last few weeks of school ending
  1. What treatments have you tried in the past?

wet combing, conditioner, lyclear creme, hedrin

Secondly about Lyclear Treatment Shampoo:
  1. How easy did you find using the fine toothed comb?

Easy to use and better than the plastic combs which come in packs, not as good as nitty gritty the teeth seem a little far apart
  1. How did Lyclear Treatment Shampoo compare to other treatments you've used in the past? Please note Lyclear is clinically proven to kill 100% of head lice after the second treatment is complete. For each of the following statements please say if Lyclear Treatment Shampoo was better, about the same or worse than other treatments you may have used:

a. Effective at removing most head lice and eggs
was effective yes despite my reservations due to the size of the gaps.
b. Ease of use
really easy to use, no spillages due to the bottle style which is a bonus!
c. Convenience
Bottle is easy to hold and convenient to get to harder to reach places like behind the ears. no big build up just simple to put on.
it is greasy but i think that helps especially with the combing
e. Ease of washing out treatment
needs to be thorughly rinsed but the hair doesnt look greasy or flat and the does not smell either
  1. Please provide more details if you felt Lyclear Treatment Shampoo was worse than previous treatments for any of the above:

No the bonus was that it could go straight onto the hair and then be washed on there was no big build up needed

  1. Did you like the fragrance or smell of Lyclear Treatment Shampoo?

Yes, smelt more like a hair dye than a headline lotion.
  1. Any other comments on initial use?

was easy and the children were not as fussed about having to have it done because it was quick simple and didnt stink like the others do
  1. Did your child like the shampoo? Please say what they thought

smelt nicer and was easier than leaving on for long periods of time.

1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age
Girl age 5

2. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?

Yes

3. What treatments have you tried in the past?
n/a

*Secondly about Lyclear Treatment Shampoo:

  1. How easy did you find using the fine toothed comb?*

Didn't seem as good as the comb I had been trying for the previous couple of days (metal teeth)

*2. How did Lyclear Treatment Shampoo compare to other treatments you've used in the past? Please note Lyclear is clinically proven to kill 100% of head lice after the second treatment is complete. For each of the following statements please say if Lyclear Treatment Shampoo was better, about the same or worse than other treatments you may have used:
a. Effective at removing most head lice and eggs*

Seems to have been effective at removing most after the first treatment
b. Ease of use
Easy enough to use although like another reviewer would probably have preferred a mousse to an oil
c. Convenience
Seems more convenient to only have to do it twice rather than the multiple applications/combings.
e. Ease of washing out treatment
It seemed quite difficult to wash completely out and DD's hair did seem quite lank afterwards but I've no idea if that's worse than other treatments. She does have very very fine hair.

3. Please provide more details if you felt Lyclear Treatment Shampoo was worse than previous treatments for any of the above
n/a

4. Did you like the fragrance or smell of Lyclear Treatment Shampoo?
From the sounds of comments here headlice treatment shampoo doesn't smell good and this one is better smelling like a hair dye but I have to say I didn't think it smelt great.

5. Any other comments on initial use?
It was relatively straightforward, although I'd love one application to kill them all, the thought of waiting for another week doesn't fill me with joy but I'm a newbie at this headlice thing.

6. Did your child like the shampoo?
I don't think she loved how long it took me to rinse it off, but other than that seemed fine.

Hello!

I and my two daughters (I am 42, and my daughters are 2 & 6) have both been plagued with headlice for a while which we have virtually, but not entirely eradicated a number of times. We have tried the nitty gritty comb and conditioner method a lot, and also Hedrin, and Full Marks. Nothing has actually got rid of them.

The comb was OK, but not as good as a nitty gritty comb, as the gaps between the teeth were too wide for the tiniest baby lice, both when combing wet and dry hair.

The treatment itself was super easy - very easy to apply, but the nozzle meant that I had to squirt some into my hand for the long hair locks. Great for getting near the scalp, though, which is the most important area. It was less oily, and easier to wash out than Full Marks, which takes at least three shampoos. Considering I have a toddler who hateshaving her hair washed, this is a big problem.

Our hair looked very clear after one treatment - very good indeed. Definitely the best yet of all the things we have tried. I have not spotted any lice yet.

The fragrance was fine - pleasant. My older child was fine with the whole treatment, but the toddler hates any dealing with her hair at all, but this is normal for her, and was better than the treatments which are harder to get out. All our hair felt soft and clean after treatment.

Have treated the whole family, my 3yr old son, me and hubby! Got passed on from 11yr old cousin after she got it at a summer camp scheme.

Was really easy to apply, didn't smell like other treatments have that I used as a child. Son never had it before so was new experience for him & I've not had any since I was a young child so I had BAD memories of foul smelling ointment that had to sit on your hair for hours.....

Smelled clean, went on easily without being too greasy! Washed out fairly easily - we used Vosene 3 in 1 with lice repellant in it and it left hair feeling fresh and soft.

The comb wasn't as good as the metal toothed combs at getting the small ones out, so we used both just to be on the safe side.

No signs of any leftovers as of yet - will just keep checking.

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age - DS 5, me 40+
  2. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice? Second time for both
  3. What treatments have you tried in the past? Combing and Hedrin

Secondly about Lyclear Treatment Shampoo:
  1. How easy did you find using the fine toothed comb? It was OK but not as substantial as the one I already have
  2. How did Lyclear Treatment Shampoo compare to other treatments you've used in the past? Please note Lyclear is clinically proven to kill 100% of head lice after the second treatment is complete. For each of the following statements please say if Lyclear Treatment Shampoo was better, about the same or worse than other treatments you may have used:

a. Effective at removing most head lice and eggs - I used it this morning and have had no itchiness today. DS used tonight so too early to say
b. Ease of use - it was fine for DS who has short hair but I found it tricky to make sure I covered all my hair.
c. Convenience - OK but a thicker liquid or a spray bottle would have been easier to use on myself
d. Greasiness of treatment - quite greasy, I had to wash my hands well to get it all off
e. Ease of washing out treatment - not great, I had to shampoo twice to get it all out
  1. Please provide more details if you felt Lyclear Treatment Shampoo was worse than previous treatments for any of the above: I'm not sure about the having to wait 7 days, I don't think we have a bad case but if we did I'd want it to be sorted in one application, do you keep going every week if there's a re-infection during the 7 days?
  2. Did you like the fragrance or smell of Lyclear Treatment Shampoo? - I didn't like it but it wasn't worse than the Hedrin
  3. Any other comments on initial use?
  4. Did your child like the shampoo? Please say what they thought - no comments so that's good

  1. Being treated - my 9 year old son. First time he has ever had lice, had them for about 2 weeks now.
I found the comb to be very flimsy & the spaces in the teeth too wide apart.
We found this treatment to be quite effective. He didn't have a real head full of lice but think it has done some good, no itching after treatment.
Very easy to use but then again, he has got short hair.
I found this product to be quite greasy, found it hard to get off hands etc.
Ease of washing out - took some washing, maybe cos it feels so oily?
The fragrance was bearable, have previously tried Hedrin which was awful and didn't kill the lice.
My child was ok about using this - anything that works is a bonus!.

  3. What treatments have you tried in the past? wet combing

Secondly about Lyclear Treatment Shampoo:
  1. How easy did you find using the fine toothed comb? The metal comb was ok - took less hair out than the nitty gritty! Not sure if this is a good thing; could it be missing lice as the teeth are wider than the NG

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age- Myself aged 37,DD aged 6 and DD aged 5

  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?- They have had head lice on and off since January.

  1. What treatments have you tried in the past?-We have tried Full Marks, Hedrin, Vosene shampoo, nitty gritty comb, Lyclear and none of them seemed to kill the lice. They were always still alive after treatment.

Secondly about Lyclear Treatment Shampoo:
  1. How easy did you find using the fine toothed comb?- My DH liked the comb compared to others

  1. How did Lyclear Treatment Shampoo compare to other treatments you've used in the past? Please note Lyclear is clinically proven to kill 100% of head lice after the second treatment is complete. For each of the following statements please say if Lyclear Treatment Shampoo was better, about the same or worse than other treatments you may have used:

a. Effective at removing most head lice and eggs-Better

b. Ease of use-Better

c. Convenience-Better

d. Greasiness of treatment-Better

e. Ease of washing out treatment-Better

  1. Please provide more details if you felt Lyclear Treatment Shampoo was worse than previous treatments for any of the above:

  1. Did you like the fragrance or smell of Lyclear Treatment Shampoo?-I thought the smell was very pleasant

  1. Any other comments on initial use?-On initial use we thought the product was great. The lice were jumping off within seconds off applying shampoo. During combing we found the lice were dead which we have never had before.

  1. Did your child like the shampoo? Please say what they thought

-The children liked the shampoo as it was easier to use than other treatments

Sorry! Did this on Friday but forgot to feedback!

1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? DD (9), DS (11) and me (32)

2. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice? It's only the second time me & DS have had head lice. DD has had it lots since she started school - I think someone there isn't being treated - so probably 10+ times

3. What treatments have you tried in the past? Hedrin, Full marks & wet combing

1. How easy did you find using the fine toothed comb? Not very - it felt like it glided over the hair, rather than getting in and finding everything. DS preferred this (he's got a sensitive scalp), but I didn't trust it so re-combed with the nitty gritty & found lots more.

a. Effective at removing most head lice and eggs - The shampoo seemed to kill almost all of the lice we found. Very few came out alive. The eggs needed something stronger than the comb provided.

b. Ease of use Very easy to use

c. Convenience The 10 minutes was a nice short treatment time

d. Greasiness of treatment - Not as greasy as treatments I've used before and much easier to wash out.

e. Ease of washing out treatment - I was pleased with this - it was much easier than other treatments & this was a big plus for me (and my back!)

3. Please provide more details if you felt Lyclear Treatment Shampoo was worse than previous treatments for any of the above: The treatment was as good as other treatments I've used in the past, with the bonus that it is much easier to wash out (which I'm pleased with). I wouldn't like to rely on it in isolation though - I think the provided comb would give a false sense of security.

4. Did you like the fragrance or smell of Lyclear Treatment Shampoo? - It wasn't offensive, pleasant enough.

5. Any other comments on initial use? - None

6. Did your child like the shampoo? Please say what they thought - DD was pleased with the length of time she had to spend washing her hair - like I say it was much easier to manage than other lotions we've used. DS wasn't too bothered either way Smile

Firstly about head lice:

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice?

Me (), DD1 (10), DS (7) and DD (3)

  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?

Probably the second time for my 3 year old, but DD1 and DS have had this on and off for a longer time.

  1. What treatments have you tried in the past?

Hedrin, Full Marks and combing with nitty gritty and conditioner

Secondly about Lyclear Treatment Shampoo:
  1. How easy did you find using the fine toothed comb?

I liked that the comb was sturdy as we all have quite thick hair. We have found the combs supplied with other treatments too flimsy.

So far so good for most of us, except DS, who I noticed was scratching last night!

b. Ease of use
Quite tricky to apply on long hair.

c. Convenience
Quite time consuming.

d. Greasiness of treatment
Quite greasy to apply, but not so bad once in the hair.

e. Ease of washing out treatment
Took us a long time to rinse out of long hair.

  1. Please provide more details if you felt Lyclear Treatment Shampoo was worse than previous treatments for any of the above:

  1. Did you like the fragrance or smell of Lyclear Treatment Shampoo?

The fragrance wasn't bad

  1. Any other comments on initial use?

Fairly easy to sue

  1. Did your child like the shampoo? Please say what they thought

They didn't particularly enjoy the experience, but none of them like to sit still for too long!
