Hi everyone,

We're delighted that Dawn French will be joining us for a webchat about her new novel, Oh Dear Silvia, on Wednesday 24 October from 1.30pm to 2.30pm. You can see Dawn talking about the book in this trailer.

Dawn will be launching Oh Dear Silvia, which is published by Michael Joseph, at an exclusive event at The Criterion Theatre, Piccadilly, on Friday 26 October, where she will be interviewed by Sue Perkins. Tickets cost £15 and include a signed copy of the book. You can buy tickets here or on 0844 847 1778 and very excitingly, we have a pair of tickets to give away.

Anyone who posts a question on this thread for Dawn (either during the live webchat itself or in advance) will be entered into a draw to win a pair of tickets to the event, so do join Dawn for a chat on Wednesday or post a question for her in advance here.

Thanks

MNHQ

Hullo, Dawn, thank you for coming onto Mumsnet. And welcome.

I hope you've got your favourite biscuit answer sorted.

I'd like to know whether you had any inkling at school that creative writing would be one of your BowStrings when you were a grown up?

<<checks spellings carefully>>

(JaneG - could you get one of the ohters to show you which cupboard they hide the stickies in?)

smile

aristocat Tue 23-Oct-12 13:30:03

Hello Dawn, thrilled to have you at mumsnet.

My question is - you have been so successful as a mother, comedian, writer and actress, is there anything else that you would like to do?

Thanks.

rubyslippers Tue 23-Oct-12 13:32:10

I'm to think of a question other than how do you get your hair so glossy and beautiful blush

FWIW, I loved your last book - found it warm and wonderful

BeardofZeus Tue 23-Oct-12 13:43:57

Rubyslippers, I was going to ask the same!

I would ask as you are clearly a magnificent writer, do you think you would have been a novelist all along?

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered Tue 23-Oct-12 13:53:11

Hi Dawn, thank you for coming to mumsnet.
I've always thought you are fabulous and hilarious.
One of my favourite moments ever was the Hugh Grant snog!

I'd love to know where you like going for holidays, and what you like doing when you get there.

A word of warning - if MNHQ offer you any refreshments, scoff 'em quick because last week Justine nicked Miranda's banana!

BeardofZeus Tue 23-Oct-12 14:04:52

Rubyslippers, I was going to ask the same!

I would ask as you are clearly a magnificent writer, do you think you would have been a novelist all along?

Mono1 Tue 23-Oct-12 14:10:04

Yeah, Dawn French, my hero! I spent many many hours watching and reciting French and Saunders sketches with my sister as teenagers christ that makes me feel old now
What's your favourite sweary word? Go on, everyone's got one.

JudeFawley Tue 23-Oct-12 14:22:03

I wanted to ask the shiny hair question!

But I'd also like to know how and where you write. Laptop? Long hand? Do you squirrel yourself away for weeks on end?

PS my mate interviewed you when 'Dear Fatty' came out. She wouldn't stop going on about how lovely you were.

dinkystinky Tue 23-Oct-12 14:27:20

Dawn - you're a brilliant role model to so many women and girls out there. Successful, charming, witty and lovely with it. Who were your role models growing up?

And a follow up question - what's your favourite biscuit?

mouldyironingboard Tue 23-Oct-12 14:28:15

Ok, it's the obvious question. Is chocolate better than sex? What is your favourite chocolate bar?

trice Tue 23-Oct-12 14:34:42

I bet it's not sodding chocolate orange.

I loved the book. Who is your favorite comic writer?

TheCunningStunt Tue 23-Oct-12 14:37:46

Dawn!!! Hello! I will def be buying your book!

You are being interviewed by Sue? You are also appearing in 'heading out' that was written by Sue aren't you? Are you two good friends?

Thanks!

Shakey1500 Tue 23-Oct-12 14:41:09

Hi Dawn grin

What's your favourite way to unwind?

cm22v077 Tue 23-Oct-12 15:20:34

Hi Dawn!

Please can you explain how you filmed the vicar-of-dibley-puddle-scene?
My friend thinks it's CGI!

Just incase you have forgotten: 24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mb6gie5jvc1r390avo1_500.gif

TanteRose Tue 23-Oct-12 15:30:17

just to say, read her other webchat before posting, maybe? all the same questions would be boring, innit grin

Welcome back Dawn!

no question - but would like to say how much I enjoyed Roger and Val Have Just Got In. Lovely, lovely programme. That is all.

YouSmegHead Tue 23-Oct-12 15:35:59

Dawn aaagggghhhhhh

Oh My God

Sorry but totally love you, love everything you've done. Top of the pops is Roger and Val, the way you two work together is amazing. To be able to go from laughing to crying to laughing again. Your face in the final scene when the little boy was coming had tears rolling down my face with a huge grin.

Anywho better ask a question.........what advice do you have for a dreamer who wants to write?

Big live and sloppy kisses. X

MorrisZapp Tue 23-Oct-12 15:41:17

Hiya Dawn!

Your XDH blabbed mentioned in the Guardian that you and he are both dating other people now. Are you going to tear him a new one for this indiscretion?

And more importantly, how does a National Treasure do dating? You, I mean.

dinkystinky Tue 23-Oct-12 15:43:26

But TanteRose - Dawn didnt answer the biscuit q last time round (a Wagon Wheel is NOT a biscuit - I'm with Justine on that one)

Wotcha Dawn. Welcome back. I'm so pleased you've returned. You're very much liked in our house.

What are your Christmas plans this year? Will you be on television at all? My Christmas list has your book on it. You can put 'ShowOfHands' turgid outpourings' on your list if you want to even things up a bit. Prepare for disappointment though. But then what's Christmas without a bit of disappointment to gild your indigestion?

Hi Dawn

I'd like to ask if you have ever had a "sliding door" moment, and if so where would you be now if you'd taken a different path.

I know we're not supposed to ask two questions but can you say Hi to my mum because she thinks you're fab too, but doesn't do internetty stuff.

flubba Tue 23-Oct-12 17:05:25

I love your work Dawn French (can't quite bring myself to call you 'Dawn')! Very excited to listen (???) to your webchat demain.

You have been on my 'who would you invite to your dream dinner party?' list ever since I can remember thinking about dinner parties, which is a vey, vey long time now grin so my question to you is who would you have at your dinner party (other than my good self of course)? Just so you know I also have a couple of historical 'interesting' people grin), George and Brad (because you just have to have someone to dribble on) and a couple of others too and it'd be a great laugh.

I loved Dear Fatty lots and lots and I felt you were actually writing to me personally lots of times. You were, secretly, weren't you?

cocolepew Tue 23-Oct-12 17:41:22

Hi Dawn, book or kindle?

(Another one who loves your hair)

Hello Dawn ( gibber) have you ever thought about writing childrens books?

{I <3 you} giggle

Dollydowser Tue 23-Oct-12 18:04:38

Hi Dawn, you and I share many things, our first name, our love of chocolate, our enormous norks bra size. But I don't know what your favourite tipple is!
Do you prefer champagne or cocktails? I'm not fussy, I like both grin

lisaro Tue 23-Oct-12 18:24:08

Dawn, you're my girly crush blush. Do you know Kate Silverton and do you both get up to Yorkshire much?
On another note; Do you ever ever regret being famous? Even with the perks it brings? Divorcing in the public eye must have been bloody horrible, however you both felt about the whole situation.

LineRunner Tue 23-Oct-12 18:28:05

Dear Dawn,

Hello. My DD adores you, and she has written to you three times in the past year. Could you please give her a wave and let her know how she might obtain one of your gorgeous photographs?

And what lisaro said - do you ever regret being famous?

Thanks for doing MN. x

Hello Dawn. The school trip sketch from French and Saunders is my favourite ever. Coach!!!! Gift Shop!!!

Come Dine with Me
Dancing On ice
Strictly
The Jungle thingy
Celebrity Deal or no Deal

Which one would you least object to taking part in? grin

Hi Dawn, I remember watching the last webchat you did with us; thanks for coming back! I've been laughing at your antics all my life it feels like and I always feel very warmly towards you because you remind me of my mum!

My question is this: do you have any big secrets that might emerge if you ended up, like your character Sylvie, in a coma? You can tell us, we won't say a word wink

SnarfEggbert Tue 23-Oct-12 19:02:16

Hi Dawn
In Dear Fatty you mentioned the time you were at your daughter's school for sport, and the commentator mentioned that you were there, and you got a tincy bit annoyed with him.

My question is please stop me getting subconcious - other parents that I don't know at school events once I've covered who's your child, I ask about line of work, I find this difficult to do with wellknown parents, I feel like I know them (which of course I don't) and they don't know me, what is acceptable small talk on the side of the pitch, whilst ignoring the big elephant?

BigBroomstickBIWI Tue 23-Oct-12 19:24:44

Welcome back to the vipers' nest! You obviously don't think we're that bad then!

I would love to see you and Sue Perkins together. Two of my favourite women.

Unfortunately I can't think of a question, so probably unlikely to win tickets ... hmm

frankie4 Tue 23-Oct-12 19:30:17

Hi Dawn

I absolutely loved your book A Tiny Bit Marvellous and could really identify with the characters.

However, the Epilogue really worried me! I just didn't believe that Mo would drive a car blindfolded. Maybe it's just me that would be worrying about knocking someone down or crashing into another car...

Dawn- you look always look gorgeous & even more so recently with those lovely cheek bones to die for!

I love that phrase you tell of your father telling you any guy that danced with you would be the luckiest guy alive (or summat) as you were/are so gorgeous. (sorry if quoted wrong)

I use it on my 2 teenage DD's, what other little gems have you shared with your daughter to boost her self esteem? grin

lookoveryourshouldernow Tue 23-Oct-12 19:37:33

..Difficult I know....

but if you hadn't won a shedload of BAFTA Awards, British Comedy Awards and National Television Awards - what would you have done ???

..and do you think that you would have been any happier ???

Woozley Tue 23-Oct-12 19:40:52

Dear Dawn

What's it like to snog Richard Armitage?

As full a description as possible please, it's the closest any of us are likely to get. grin

Thanks xx

5ThingsUnderTheBed Tue 23-Oct-12 20:11:08

Hi Dawn, I think you're fab!

My question, you did a lot of spoofs with Jennifer, what was your favourite one?

BigBroomstickBIWI Tue 23-Oct-12 20:14:28

Oh yes. A question popped into my head.

Of all the characters you have played, either in short sketches or in longer programmes, which has been your favourite? Which would you reprise if you had the opportunity?

carlywurly Tue 23-Oct-12 20:37:15

Hi Dawn, I once bought some Wassail cider because the nice lady who works in the Lostwithiel deli told me you thought it was lovely.

In fairness, it is indeed delicious, but was it true? (and if it is, maybe it answers Dollydowser's question!)
grin

BillyBollyBandy Tue 23-Oct-12 20:40:15

Hi Dawn

You're lovely <simper>

What's your favourite adult and children's book?

chocolatetester1 Tue 23-Oct-12 21:02:44

Dawn French, you are my favourite and my best grin

SoleSource Tue 23-Oct-12 21:24:45

Hi Dawn

I have bought and read your book Dear Fatty. Loved it smile

I admire you greatly and have been a fan forever!

Claire x

Dollydowser Tue 23-Oct-12 21:25:15

NO Carlywarly, I want the lovely Dawn to answer my question!! (and cider wasn't one of the choices grin)

Hello Ms French (formal)
Thank you for making me laugh for years and years and years.

Please tell me if your daughter thinks you are funny, or does she just roll her eyes at you? Does she REALISE that her mother is so well loved.

<may be a slightly bitter personal reason for asking this>
grin

PelvicFloorClenchReminder Tue 23-Oct-12 22:33:39

Hello Dawn!!! <faints>

I loooove yooooou! blush

The beetroot cake at the end of A Tiny Bit Marvellous is my DS' favourite all time cake, he sends many pink-crumbed kisses of gratitude!

allagory Tue 23-Oct-12 23:00:59

Dear Dawn,

I spent a considerable time yesterday night catching up with Downtown Abbey. As I watched I couldn't help but cast you in nearly every single part.
So I wondered, if you could choose one character in Downtown Abbey to play, which one would it be?

I also would like to thank you for the valuable critical service you had performed over the years pointing out what a load of sentimental twaddle these dramas really are. It has added to my enjoyment no end.

Hello Dawn!

I love you blush

What advise would you give to anyone who is in the process of adopting a child?

Love Lisa xxx

NanaNina Tue 23-Oct-12 23:06:38

Oh gawd Dawn we all think you're fab.......is it a bit embarrassing, all this adulation. We sound like a load of women having a crush on you like we did when we were kids, on older girls.

Can you understand this and do you feel like that about anyone? and

How does it feel to be recognised by everyone - do you smile at people who stare or ask If you are DF or do you get pissed off sometimes?

Joanne Lumley gave me a lovely smile at the Cat Show!!

Cahoots Tue 23-Oct-12 23:24:00

Hi Dawn, here's a quickie....

What is your favourite type of TV program?
Comedy, house renovation, cooking, costume drama????

Valpollicella Tue 23-Oct-12 23:28:20

Hi Dawn

so pleased ypu've retuned to us -bet you lurk--

My question is...as a working mother in tv, how did you manage that when your DD was little? Did you get `the guilt`? if so, how did you (like so many other wohm) reconcile it?

CheckItOutFartShoes Tue 23-Oct-12 23:32:56

Hi Dawn,
Although great together, you and Jennifer have had your individual successes. Have you ever watched Jennifer in a part and wished it was you who had played it instead?

Go on, you can tell us wink

SoleSource Tue 23-Oct-12 23:55:53

Hi Dawn

I met Lenny in Brighton once, years ago. He sat next to me on a bench on the seafront. He told me he would never stay in a Premier Inn. He is huge!

twolittlebundles Wed 24-Oct-12 00:07:44

Hi Dawn- you are AWESOME and a legend in our house. Can you please update on your recent results in the frankly heroic search for great kissers? I won't be here for the actual chat (other side of the world) but would love to live vicariously through you hear about it!

westcoastnortherner Wed 24-Oct-12 06:20:48

Hi Dawn

We think you are fab too! What would you post on the "Am I being unreasonable?" thread? smile

YouSmegHead Wed 24-Oct-12 08:22:24

Dawn a sneaky second question, I'm in Cornwall ATM (st Ives) where do you recommend we go over the next few days x

Hi Dawn, you obviously have a great outlook on life and are a positive role model to many. What one thing/person/memory keeps you so positively minded and stops you reaching for the gin in a crisis?

Hi Dawn - how does it feel to have a base back in the south west?

(I was originally from Devon as well, moved away for a number of years, am now back and know I'll never move away from here again. It's surprised me how much of a difference it has made moving home).

delphinedownunder Wed 24-Oct-12 11:01:54

Hi Dawn,
I think you are completely wonderful and jolly pretty too . I Imagine I will be tucked up in bed when you go live (being the middle of the night here and having a full day cutting, sticking , glittering, confiscating Pokemon cards and generally being an old dragon ahead of me - can you guess my job?!). I loved Dear Fatty but really want to know what the story is with Keith Allen. Go on, spill the beans.

JenFrankenstein Wed 24-Oct-12 11:05:43

Important question here you Janner you. Jam and then cream or cream and jam?

<Waves at Smeg and apologises for the crap weather we have down here at the moment>

PrincessPumpkinshoutsBOO Wed 24-Oct-12 11:35:24

Hi Dawn <fawns>

We properly luffs you in the Boo house, I also love your books very much and really look forward to reading this new one. <fawning over for now, may return to it later though>

My question is also snogging related, I think I heard somewhere that if you have a really hot co star (Johnny Depp, Richard Armetage etc) you like to make sure you have a snogging scene with them (sorry if I am wrong, preggo brain, if I am right, then you go girl, I would if I could), who is next on your snogging list, and of those you have snogged, who would you recommend??

<back to fawning a little more, did I mention I luffs you?>

GreatGooglyMoogly Wed 24-Oct-12 11:52:44

Welcome back Dawn and well done on your amazing weight loss! What advice would you give to someone wanting to lose weight but lacking the determination to actually do it? And how do you keep it off?

kandinskysgirl Wed 24-Oct-12 12:00:42

Hi Dawn French!

Are you looking forward to Christmas? Here on Mumsnet there are a lot of people who are very determined to make Christmassy traditions (me included!)

Do you have a favourite Christmas tradition that makes you feel all warm and happy inside? (Mulled wine is very good at that I find grin)

jungandeasilyfreudened Wed 24-Oct-12 12:09:01

Hi Dawn

Thank you for designing such fabulously flattering clothes. Your range saved me from despairing at the state of my wardrobe when I gained some weight!

I'd love to know what you'd do on your perfect afternoon off from work?

I'm sure whatever you say will only convince me further we'd be great friends if we met grin

Ps. I also have hair envy... Have you ever attempted a fringe trim with the kitchen scissors? I tried it once to startling effect.

DianeEGS Wed 24-Oct-12 12:35:05

Hi Dawn.... another weight question ( do I sense a yawn?). Now that you look so fabulous, are you been treated differently? are you no longer 'national treasure' territory and more femme fatale?

<squee>

I've never done a webchat before, but I couldn't miss this one. In case of a babyscreaminghissyfit, I'll put a question in now:

Dawn, is there one single joke, pun, rhyme, etc (written by you or otherwise) that makes you almost wee with laughter?

DawnFrench Wed 24-Oct-12 12:57:49

My question is who do you find funny?

Glad the hair is the first question! Got our priorities right. There's no secret, just have parents with good hair and strong set of straighteners. I have the burn scars to prove it.

Fatty Saunders is quite funny, but I prefer the other one. Love Cathy Burke, love Catherine Tate, love Liza Tarbuck, Sarah Millican, Josie Long and most of all loved Eric Morcambe.

NormaStanleyFletcher Wed 24-Oct-12 13:33:21

Hello Dawn,

If you could go back and give your 14 year old self some advice, what would it be?

I would say stop worrying about boys and not being able to get trousers to fit. There are more important things in life. Like chocolate.

HappySunflower Wed 24-Oct-12 13:34:53

NOT a question but I am in a 'sod it' mood so thought I'd share anyway...
My little girl woke up in the night upset a few weeks ago and came to sit with me in front of the telly.
The Oh so famous puddle scene appeared and tears very quickly turned to laughter!

Sadly have to report that celebrity kissing has dried up a bit. Can I just remind you of the old list, which includes: George Clooney, Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, Hugh Laurie, Hugh Grant and Boyzone. Best of all though, weirdly, was Jamie Theakston. Tip top lips!

NormaStanleyFletcher Wed 24-Oct-12 13:36:57

Hi Dawn

I'd like to ask if you have ever had a "sliding door" moment, and if so where would you be now if you'd taken a different path.

I know we're not supposed to ask two questions but can you say Hi to my mum because she thinks you're fab too, but doesn't do internetty stuff.

I don't do internetty stuff either. A lovely person is doing this for me. So Hi to your Mum.

To be honest, I think my sliding door moment was when I was a teacher and I had the chance to go on tour with the comic strip. I knew I ought to remain a teacher, so I decided to turn down the tour to Australia, but the headmistress at Parliament Hill School for Girls gave me some sage advice, and even though she was short of staff she advised me to go on tour because she said I would always regret it if I didn't.

I live in a small village referred to by some us as Dibley......grin

We also have a vacancy for a vicar if you fancy a career change?!!

It's ok Sole. grin

NetworkGuy Wed 24-Oct-12 13:43:31

Interested to see such a great bunch of female comics you like, but apart from Eric Morecambe, are there any current male comics?

OK, we all like different people, but among my favourites would be John Bishop, Lee Mack, Al Murray, and others who've been on Live at the Apollo (unfortunately, an excess of men on there, perhaps! ?)

Perhaps it's my age (50+) smile

lisaro Wed 24-Oct-12 13:43:39

I've given up on the packing (imminent move took time off to pack) for this, and my little ex stray is so excited she's piddled in the bath. That's an honour.

As full a description as possible please, it's the closest any of us are likely to get. grin

Thanks xx

I was a bit shocked to find out how young he is. The producer on Vicar of Dibley lied to me in order to get me to agree since I had said my vicar husband should really be someone my age. Anyway, when he turned up all sense left the building and I insisted on lots of rehearsals of the snogging scene. He didn't object. Yes, indeed - very nice.

Oh who had to go and mention bumsex threads and lower the tone. grinsad

Hi Dawn, you obviously have a great outlook on life and are a positive role model to many. What one thing/person/memory keeps you so positively minded and stops you reaching for the gin in a crisis?

I guess my Dad who was a massive supporter of both his children and knew instinctively when my confidence was low. He always reminded me that I deserved the best, and deserved to be my best. So that's what I've strived for.

Hi dawn, huge fans of you in this house too grin

Are you a secret mumsnetter? You seem like you'd fit in ever so well here grin

What would your nickname be?and would you be ok with our foul mouth tirades and erm naughty Friday chats, or are you far above that sort of thing? wink

I'm sure that if I had a computer I would use it to be a Mumsnetter, but unfortunately I live in the 16th century and only use a chisel and stone to communicate with people. Guess my name might be something like HappyPants or CockWrangler or something like that.

DawnFrench Wed 24-Oct-12 13:51:30

Delighted to hear so many of you referencing the jelly babies from exorcist parody. Your mother sucks jelly babies in hell! Come to think of it, that was my favourite parody.

I can't look at a Wagon Wheel without thinking of your comedy partner. They have really shrunk. shock

Had no inkling at school about writing, in fact, wish I had known much sooner how much I would love it and then perhaps I wouldn't have spent so much time arseing about in the dressing up box with Fatty.

Dawn - you're a brilliant role model to so many women and girls out there. Successful, charming, witty and lovely with it. Who were your role models growing up?

And a follow up question - what's your favourite biscuit?

The two people I wanted to be were: A) my drama teacher Christine Abbot, and B) Eric Morcambe. I think I've turned out more like Christine Abbot. No bad thing.

Favourite biscuit - shortbread made by daughter. Usually at Christmas when she realises she hasn't bought me a present.

Hi Dawn, what car do you drive and have you ever been tempted to take on Jennifer in the top gear challenge? Xx

Would never take on Jennifer, she's too competitive and frankly doesn't care if she dies as long as she wins! I used to drive a Jaguar XK8 and loved it very much, then had a kid, so now there are two cars at my house that we all drive. One is a mini and one is a range rover.

Hello Ms French (formal)
Thank you for making me laugh for years and years and years.

Please tell me if your daughter thinks you are funny, or does she just roll her eyes at you? Does she REALISE that her mother is so well loved.

<may be a slightly bitter personal reason for asking this>
grin

Let's get this straight, my daughter is utterly allergic to me and thinks I am a bossy, unreasonable, shouting, harridan. She is right. Thank God I love her.

NanaNina Wed 24-Oct-12 14:02:13

Dawn - I notice no one has mentioned your weight loss and how great you look. Is that off limits?

Oh and noticed you didn't mention Victoria Wood or Julie Walters in your list of people who you thought were funny?

NetworkGuy Wed 24-Oct-12 14:02:50

No really a question - if you ever wanted to update your "chisel and stone" I'd happily give some advice (in IT for 30+ years and not pusher of Twitter, Facebook, but happy to help choose a computer [Linux, Windows or Apple] or a mobile, without much bias!)

Hi Dawn!

Please can you explain how you filmed the vicar-of-dibley-puddle-scene?
My friend thinks it's CGI!

Just incase you have forgotten: 24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mb6gie5jvc1r390avo1_500.gif

Your friend is wrong, wrong, wrong. The crew dug a deep hole, filled it with cold water and I jumped in. At the very bottom of the hole were lots of spongey balls to cushion my landing. It still hurt. But great fun.

Although great together, you and Jennifer have had your individual successes. Have you ever watched Jennifer in a part and wished it was you who had played it instead?

Go on, you can tell us wink

Honestly no because I think, she is very different to me so the parts she plays are right for only her. That doesn't mean to say that I wasn't eaten up with jealousy about the massive success of Absolutely Fabulous. Bitch.

Re: French and Saunders , Comic Strip et al. How do manage to keep the characters and material fresh when it is often the same established group involved and is it like an extended family reunion each time.

This is the exact reason that Jen and I no longer do French and Saunders in that old format. However, we did all get together recently to make a new version of the Famous Five film the Comic Strip. It goes out on the 7th November on Gold. Must say, was a hoot to be back with the old gang.

Weird you should ask, I'm doing it this Thursday ( not sure when its transmitted) it was agony to choose the 8 songs, and I can't believe songs I've had to leave out. I will not mention bumsex if GM comes on for a chat.

NanaNina Wed 24-Oct-12 15:35:54

I don't get all this bumsex stuff - find it irritating. I know it's exceedingly churlish but I am a bit miffed I didn't get an answer to my question. Anyone else admit to this? I think DF came on MN to promote her new book and was realy surprised that no one was mentioning it. Think we all think of DF as a fantastic comedienne rather than a novelist.

The question I've always wanted to know from someone famous is "how does it feel to be recognised by everyone" - what happens - I guess some people just stare and maybe embarrassed themselves, or ask "ARE you DF" or whoever. I've never spotted anyone famous so don't know how I would react. I did get a lovely smile fromJoanna Lumley at the cat show as I was excitedly telling my friend who she was! Oh god why are famous people so much "larger than life" - they're ordinary mortals really aren't they, just with special talents.

But what could have been said about the book Nana? Nobody has read it yet She can't give the story away, but everyone knew she had a book out.

NanaNina Wed 24-Oct-12 16:22:30

Well she did mention that no-one had mentioned the book so that must have been her expectation that people would mention it, if only to say they knew it was out tomorrow and were looking forward to it. Think some people did make comments after Dawn had mentioned the book.

Yes, that's true. To be honest Dawn was choosing what to reply to, and could have ignored any question she wanted really. Or steered the conversation back to the book each time.

She has done so much and people love her for different things. I am sure people will buy her book for her regardless of what went on in the webchat.

Woozley Wed 24-Oct-12 17:23:40

She answered mine about Richard Armitage. grin

NanaNina Wed 24-Oct-12 17:55:23

Oh dear it took quite a lot of emotional courage for me to admit to acting like a school kid who hasn't been picked for a part in the play, because Dawn didn't answer my question. I thought maybe other MNs might admit to feeling this way too...........but obviously not.
Incidentally I wasn't picked for a part in the school play (over 60 years ago) and I can still remember it!!

She didn't answer my question either about which Reality TV show she would least object to going on. sad But hey-ho perhaps she hates Reality TV.

Nananina I've sat in a pub with someone famous and people stared. But no more than they do when I'm out with my severely autistic son smile

NanaNina Wed 24-Oct-12 21:35:02

Oh saintlyjj how sad that people stare at your autistic son and how much worse for you and him, and here I am wondering about "famous" people and how they cope. Shame on me!
Linerunner thanks for your comment!!

I saw Dawn on the One Show and still love her even is she didn't answer my Q! Re the hair though (and this isn't sour grapes) I think that there is far more to it than what she said - she mentioned covering up the grey (very expertly done!) and a superb cut (probably done very frequently) and the gloss - I don't know - must be the same thing they use on those women on shampoo adverts that lift up a curtain of gleaming shining hair. I don't blame her of course, but just think she could have been more honest.

Glad she seems to have a new love though - I never liked Lenny Henry!

I lived in rural Japan and was stared at there as well grin (and used to get people running after me - perhaps that was more like being famous, than being out with ds1!)

Campari Thu 25-Oct-12 00:36:31
