Calling all overseas MNers - My lovely boy has written some letters

(244 Posts)
AllYouNeedIsAClickyBallpoint Tue 12-Jun-12 19:34:22

He's 7, and is quite taken by stamps.
He's written several letters (I'll give you an example in a minute), and I wondered if there might be some MNers in foreign parts who might help him smile

Here is one of his letters ( in very best joined-up writingsmile)

Dear Jamaica

If I writ you a letter, please will you send me one back, so I can see your stamps.
I am from England (Great Britan)
Good luck in the Olympics
Love from Allyouneed Junior.

There are similar letters for several countries, and his plan is to put them in an envelope with the country name on the outside, and several stamps.

Would anyone be able to send him a letter with a stamp on?
Thank you. He would be the happiest boy in the world!

I live in Canada if that helps (PM me).

mayaswell Tue 12-Jun-12 19:36:50

That is completely gorgeous, I wish I could help. You could always try the Tourist Boards for those countries if you get no replies on here. But you will because MN is fab at this stuff! X

justabigdisco Tue 12-Jun-12 19:36:51

Sorry can't help but HOW CUTE?

CJfromTheWestWing Tue 12-Jun-12 19:37:49

I could send a Scottish one

HMQueenElizabeth Tue 12-Jun-12 19:38:08

Aaawww that's very sweet, I'm in England too, so a stamp from me would be boring, but hope you get lots of overseas MNers to help. smile

timetomoveon Tue 12-Jun-12 19:40:05

I'm in Hungary - PM me.

mayaswell Tue 12-Jun-12 19:46:55

I would post this again, but ask for specific help from overseas mnetters in the title, I don't want him to be disappointed!

You could ask MNHQ to change the title of the thread for you... "Calling all overseas MNers" or something.

PurplePidjin Tue 12-Jun-12 19:56:51

I will be visiting Latvia in the first week of the summer holidays. Send me a pm and a reminder nearer the time and I'll send a postcard smile

cocolepew Tue 12-Jun-12 20:15:08

How sweet is that?!? I sponser a child in Malawi if you PM your name and address I'll sent the stamp next time I get a letter.

Unless I have one kicking about it could be a couple of months though.

AllYouNeedIsAClickyBallpoint Tue 12-Jun-12 20:17:59

You are all amazing!
Thank you grin

Are Scottish stamps different to Royal mail ones? <ignorant>

PM me as DH is in the Falklands until July 11th, so you'll have to be quick. And IL's live in Lanzarote with SIX YEAR OLD NEPHEW. Would he like a penpal?!?!?!

Aww, how nice of him!!!!

We are off to the Middle East at the end of August so if you PM I'll get my 6 year old ( will be 7 by the time the letter is sent) to send him a letter.

worrywortisworrying Tue 12-Jun-12 20:22:47

Ahh. I could do Ukraine and Ireland for sure.

I have friends in many different countries so PM if I can help.

(I have a 4YO who is obsessed with trains!)

x

My mum lives in France & I'm sure she'd do it. I also have friends in New Zealand who I could ask. PM me if I (they) can help.

AllYouNeedIsAClickyBallpoint Tue 12-Jun-12 20:25:11

He would love a penpal!

Can I apologise if anyone has got more than one message. I lost track of who I PMed blush

ruelachesty Tue 12-Jun-12 20:25:49

robino Tue 12-Jun-12 20:32:11

ForFoxsGlacierMints Tue 12-Jun-12 20:37:46

I could ask my sister to send one from America?

I can ask my sister to send one from Australia?

I'm going to the Bahamas soon. PM me and I'll send a postcard.

Cosmosis Tue 12-Jun-12 20:44:02

Dh has suggested sending some to the British embassy in some countries too? I wish we could help but live in Yorkshire and while independence would be great we don't have our own stamps yet grin

Sharpkat Tue 12-Jun-12 20:58:39

I have a letter from Armenia today that I could steam the stamps off and create something for you.

Armenia is pretty cool grin

Do you just want something with a stamp on like a postcard or would you prefer a letter? Just trying to work out what's easier for my mum!

AllYouNeedIsAClickyBallpoint Tue 12-Jun-12 21:01:15

Squirted, maybe it would be best if I came with you to the Bahamas grin

Cosmosis - I'm in Yorkshire too. Only bog standard stamps!

AllYouNeedIsAClickyBallpoint Tue 12-Jun-12 21:02:23

And thank you - writing to the British Embassies is a brilliant idea.

Selks Tue 12-Jun-12 21:06:56

Aw this is lovely! Hope your lovely boy enjoys all his new stamps, AllYouNeed smile

Just when I'm feeling jaded with MN and I find a thread like this..... grin

AllYouNeedIsAClickyBallpoint Tue 12-Jun-12 21:07:58

MrsHels - I think he'll be amazed and stunned to get anything at all smile
He's never been sent a letter before. I imagine he'll be overwhelmed, bless him grin

DestinationUnknown Tue 12-Jun-12 21:08:05

I'm in uk too but how abut posting on the Living Overseas board here? Am sure the lovely MNers who hang out there would help and they live all over!

Your boy sounds fab.

roguepixie Tue 12-Jun-12 21:09:48

I am in the UK too but may have some overseas stamps - I used to collect them (when I was mini-rogue) and may well have some. Late FIL used to collect UK stamps but will check his collection too. Will PM you if I strike lucky.

Btw, don't think I have seen something that cute for ages. He sounds lovely. grin.

Waedigirl Tue 12-Jun-12 21:11:50

I'm in Switzerland. If you pm me his name and your address I'm sure I can find an obliging Milka cow who can write a postcard smile

BellaOfTheBalls Tue 12-Jun-12 21:12:01

I'm in the UK but that is the most adorable thing. And all of those saying they'll help out. Thank you for restoring my faith in MN-ers and the world in general grin

FourEyesGood Tue 12-Jun-12 21:12:58

Please will you let me send you my old stamp collection? My mum brought it over when she had a clear-out a few years ago and I have no idea what to do with it! I doubt there's anything valuable in it but I used to spend hours on it when I was 8 or so. I've never used the PM thing before but will look out for one from you - let me know your address.
x

If there are any countries not yet covered, let me know - owing to my 10 years in a weird job, I have friends in lots of different countries grin

FourEyesGood Tue 12-Jun-12 21:23:18

Seriously, I don't want these stamps and would love them to go to someone who'll appreciate them. Hurrah for mumsnet!

Gah, meant to say, any countries on his letters not yet covered...

AllYouNeedIsAClickyBallpoint Tue 12-Jun-12 21:26:26

CJfromTheWestWing Tue 12-Jun-12 21:27:46

Ds is going to love this! He is very bright ( ahem, aren't they all on here?), and so interested in everything going on in the world. It wouldn't surprise me if he ends up the next Bear Grylls!
Once he knows how all you MNers have rallied round, he'll be trying to persuade me to start a thread asking for donkeys hmm grin

Thank you all so much thanks

QOD Tue 12-Jun-12 21:59:02

You've just reminded me that my dd used to have a real,THING about post cards! She was terrified and upset by them, they weren't letters they were word cards and "I don't liiiiiiiiiiike them"

I'm in German and Switzerland for the next 8 weeks. PM me if I can help.

sashh Wed 13-Jun-12 07:03:03

I can't help on the stamps thing but have you considered the travelling teddy bear? Probably better to use a school address or a PO Box.

Basically Teady starts off with a message, usually from a class of primary school kids. Teady is passed on via people travelling abroad where he/she has adventures and sends pictures, or in your case post cards with stamps, before he goes on to his next destination. He/she usually has a back pack containing a notebook so people who host teddy, or help with travel can write about who they are.

Sometmes he travels alone in the hold of a plane, but mostly he hitches a lift with someone travelling from his current location to the next one.

When his log book is full he returns home.

Moving to Cambodia in 5 weeks. PM me if you want a Cambodian one sent to you.

desertgirl Wed 13-Jun-12 07:29:17

I have students in Pakistan, Iran, India, Sri Lanka Latvia and Lithuania - PM me and I'll see what we can get.

alexpolismum Thu 14-Jun-12 17:46:30

have you already got one coming from Greece? If not, PM me and I will be happy to send one

pigpog Thu 14-Jun-12 18:15:04

Another one from Denmark happy to help!

AllYouNeedIsAClickyBallpoint Thu 14-Jun-12 18:50:37

HM - he's sleeping fine, it's me that's awake until 2am grinning grin

I just can't believe the response this has had! It's fantastic!

I adored getting post when I was little, specially from my mum when she was abroad, because she always did special curly writing and little pictures instead of words. Downside, I had to read it all in French!

I've popped some old metro tickets in for some reason, but PM me if he'd like the rest, which is a load of flight/train/transport tickets- thought it might be a bit weird cos they've got my name on- but I used to play for ages with them pretending I was going on a round the world trip. I hang on to them for the sentimental value but they're not v. useful just in a drawer like that.

HaveALittleFaith Thu 14-Jun-12 20:07:20

I just posted in chat asking where MNetters were from and someone pointed me in the direction of this thread. It's luffly! How exciting for him as the letters start rolling in!

I am an ex Rep and also lived abroad for a bit (with DS father who now lives in a different country with his DW).

I will create a sin that is MN and ask on FB for everyone over the world to send me some stamps. DS dad is a stamp collector so he should understand!!

I can't garuntee the response but know I may be able to cover Greece, Tenerife, Germany, USA, Spain, France with my requests.

I'll PM you when I have some more info.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair Thu 14-Jun-12 20:18:09

I'm in USA too and would be happy to send a letter/postcard or two? PM me

AllYouNeedIsAClickyBallpoint Fri 15-Jun-12 21:00:58

O received two humongous parcels today!
One from Foureyesgood - a whole stamp collection shock I don't know how to start and thank you.

Another one (I'm not sure who you are here - possibly quirrelquarrel? Please let me know smile) a beautiful decorated shoe box full of postcards, leaflets and stamps, and a little chalk mr punch thing - which he is very taken with, and has it in his bed!

To say I'm overwhelmed today is a complete understatement. I am in awe of your generosity, and I can't thank you enough xx

Um, that's me :-) I think! at least- is it the Roald Dahl box? I kept looking around my room thinking what a 7 year old boy might like to do with geography and countries and eventually the chocolate box I had wasn't big enough, so I unearthed that from my bookcase.

I'm so glad he likes it! :D you're very welcome.

grumpleteaser Fri 15-Jun-12 21:47:03

pm me if you want a Bulgarian stamp to put on the map!

trumpton Fri 15-Jun-12 21:47:09

Squee indeed ! Glad the water wheel got there. grin)

This is wonderful! I'm in boring norfolk so I'm no use. But this thread makes me smile.

AllYouNeedIsAClickyBallpoint Fri 15-Jun-12 22:21:56

When he opened up the parcels, he was speechless (for the first time ever ), I was speechless and teary!
I know I'm repeating myself here, but I honestly thought I'd get a couple of replies, and that would be it. I never in my wildest dreams imagined this!
O is so excited to see the different stamps, and is amazed at how much better they are than our boring old uk ones!

I think it was squirted further up who suggested a world map and stickers - thank you for that idea, the map should arrive tomorrow grin

PissyDust Fri 15-Jun-12 22:51:15

Hi AllYouNeed as we spoke about in our PM here is my thread with a request for pen pals for DD.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/1496387-After-the-very-popular-stamps-from-around-the-world-thread-Im-calling-all-overseas-MNers-My-DD-would-like-some-pen-pals

Fingers crossed it works out as well for DD's as it has your DS smile

Allyouneed

You have started something off in our house now!!!

DD wants not just stamps but letters and postcards!

I have to write to the embassies and President Obama apparently!

Magneto Fri 15-Jun-12 23:49:57

My dh is a stamp collector and he said if there are any countries you are missing PM me with a list and your address and he'll see if he has any to add to your ds's collection. He thinks it's great your ds is interested in it grin.

AllYouNeed, I can send you a stamp from the Vatican, if your DS would like that? I wont be posting it from the Vatican, so it won't be on a letter addressed to your DS with a Vatican stamp, IYKWIM, but I have received letters with a Vatican stamp, so can send a stamp on (or a few different stamps, if I can find all of the letters). PM me your address if you'd like me to send some to you. Delighted for your DS, he must be thrilled to have received so many different stamps grin.

I'm in the States, I'll help! PM me!

sagenod Sat 16-Jun-12 01:42:54

Letter in the post tomorrow without fail smile

ElaineBenes Sat 16-Jun-12 02:24:19

Can get you a UN stamp (yes, they have their own stamps!). PM if you'd like and I can pop a postcard to him.

Mustgettogym Sat 16-Jun-12 03:18:35

I can do Doha (lovely 5 year old Zara), Dubai or Pakistan? smile

Feel free to PM me but I'm back in London on 22nd!

bunnygirl80 Sat 16-Jun-12 10:41:59

I posted my letter yesterday. Unfortunately the Australian postal service have launched a collection of stamps in honour of the jubilee that just feature the queen's head, and don't look too far removed from a UK first class stamp! Had to plead with the miserable woman behind the counter to find me one with a more interesting picture on it grin

AllYouNeedIsAClickyBallpoint Sat 16-Jun-12 12:35:32

Very exciting letterbox today grin

A postcard from Helsinki, one from Luxembourg, some stamps from Sierra Leone, and a beautiful card with stamps from Germany.

Thank you thanksthanks

Damn you, Canada Post. Why hasn't my pony stamp got there yet?

HMQueenElizabeth Sat 16-Jun-12 21:58:59

It's Sunday tomorrow... Your postman can have a bit of a break! grin

AllYouNeedIsAClickyBallpoint Mon 18-Jun-12 16:49:23

No pony stamp yet!
But a packet from Japan, including a whole sheet of stamps, a pack of Pokemon stickers (which have been squirrelled away somewhere by a small excited boy!) and a pack of menko cards.
And, a letter from Germany with some football stickers (also been squirrelled away)

Thank you so much, as before, your generosity astounds me grin thanksthanks

FormerlyTitledUntidy Wed 20-Jun-12 20:09:13

Any post today allyouneed?

Portofino Wed 20-Jun-12 20:12:38

Oh God! Not only have I not sent a stamped letter.....I have forgotten to post my Father's day cards.....

BikingViking Wed 20-Jun-12 20:19:14

Portofino - I can top that. I haven't posted: the postcard, father's day card, father's birthday card, brother's birthday card, dh's father's day card from the children (he works abroad) and dh's birthday card (although his birthday is on Monday but everything else should have been posted last week).

Am suffering major guilt. Good news is, the postcard has got the stamps already on it and I asked the bloke to put as many different stamps as he could (which was a bit of challenge as it was only 12 kroner but he managed to get 5 different kinds on).

I will pop the postcard in the letterbox tomorrow on the way to work and I will leave work 20 mins early to go via postoffice to send the other stuff. Honest guv.

ElaineBenes Thu 21-Jun-12 03:38:39

me neither blush. tomorrow, i promise

mirai Thu 21-Jun-12 04:14:08

Bobbish Thu 21-Jun-12 04:30:14

tomverlaine Thu 21-Jun-12 04:32:21

Am in Hong Kong currently- do you have that one?

LinzerTorte Thu 21-Jun-12 04:59:05

I'm in Austria and I'm sure 7 year old DD would be happy to write him a letter. smile

Just wanted to add, thanks so so much to ScroobiousPip, I have pmed you this morning but dd is made up!!

She has gone skipping off to school to tell them about her "friend" across the world!!

As I have said before she has SEN and is very shy and struggles socially so doesn't have many friends so she was absoloutley made up that another child sent her this.

TeddyBare Thu 21-Jun-12 10:43:42

Is this thread in classics? It should be.

AllYouNeedIsAClickyBallpoint Thu 21-Jun-12 22:05:18

Ok, time for an update! smile

There's been a lovely picture from France, a very well written letter from Greece, and a gorgeous picture from Australia. grin

A letter from Ireland, another from Australia with four fish stamps, which O is very impressed with!

A postcard from Venice with some other stamps, a postcard from Romania, a letter from Belgium with mythical creatures stamps inside (O loves "miffical beasts")

And finally, the pony stamp has arrived! O is so impressed that you have bears and cougars living near you, and wants to go and stay with you grin (he's been rather challenging tonight, and I was quite tempted to post him to you!)

We've had so many lovely, interesting letters and postcards, I really can't thank you enough.
O has been asked to take them all into school next week, to show his friends - he's very excited about it!
I suspect some of his favourites have made their way under his pillow, I may have to rescue them grin

Tell him that as well as the bears and cougars, we sometimes get great white sharks. And, an octopus was captured on camera eating a seagull here. Canada does wild animals very well. I'm afraid I am quite broody for another child at the moment so please post him with a return SAE just in case.

Thanks for the update.

Keep the updates coming - never fails to cheer me up! Maybe you could post pics of some of them <looks hopeful> v sad I am boring and live in England

FormerlyTitledUntidy Thu 21-Jun-12 23:48:30

Oh good, it got there smile
As I suspected, there were no good stamps just boring flowers sad

ICutMyFootOnOccamsRazor Sat 23-Jun-12 11:56:38

Ooh tell him to wait till the end of the week to take them in, and maybe mine will have arrived by then! (But probably not, the post is really shit quite inefficient.)

KatMumsnet (MNHQ) Sat 23-Jun-12 13:55:04

This thread is so lovely! We've moved it into Classics smile

Ooooh! Thank you for Kat for taking a look and doing the right thing. <jumps up and down like a loon>

CotedePablo Sat 23-Jun-12 14:41:48

Don't think Portugal's been mentioned yet. I'll be there late August/early September, so if he'd like a card from there, PM me.

This is so lovely. What fab people there are on here!

Lexilicious Sat 23-Jun-12 15:03:54

thanksamillion Sat 23-Jun-12 20:34:36

We posted DD1s letter from Moldova on Friday. Post is very unpredictable though so you could get it next week or in three months time hmm.

AllYouNeedIsAClickyBallpoint Sat 23-Jun-12 21:40:45

Feel quite teary that this has made classics!
Thanks Kat thanks
I do have updates, but I have a very busy night ahead of me, so I'll catch up tomorrow evening and send out pm's to all you lovely mners who have offered more stamps xx

Horopu Sat 23-Jun-12 23:03:28

Finally got letter sent yesterday from NZ. Should take about a week to arrive. Some of my class wrote and asked some (fairly random) questions. I put a couple of used stamps in as well.

yeyyy that this is in classics!

ICutMyFootOnOccamsRazor Tue 26-Jun-12 12:26:03

Any more letters yet?

jkklpu Tue 26-Jun-12 12:31:37

has anyone offered Portugal yet?

AllYouNeedIsAClickyBallpoint Tue 26-Jun-12 14:07:32

Time for an update grin
Sorry it's taken a while, I've had a busy few days.
I'll also do some pming - if I've left anyone out, it's not because I'm ungrateful, just organisationally challenged.

At the weekend, O had a lovely postcard from Denmark, and one from Italy.
A very generous MNer sent a whole sheet of special Canadian stamps with animals on, and loads of airmail letters (the sort that you write on then fold into an envelope shape)

Yesterday, he received a postcard from Tasmania, with platypus, echidna and lyre bird stamps, which he loves.

This morning, (O will open these when he gets home) we have a parcel from Kazakhstan (yay! Kazakhstan! grin), a letter from America, and a postcard from the UN in New York.

I'm really quite jealous of the fabulous places you all live!

I'm also thinking of starting a FB page, so if anyone wants to follow how he gets on and see pictures, they can! (please tell me if this is a crap idea!)

Again, thank you, all of you thanksthanks

Allyouneed I think thats a fab idea!
DD has a map and stickers going on from places she has got postcards from.

smile

AllYouNeedIsAClickyBallpoint Tue 26-Jun-12 14:54:58

Well, I've started a FB page (not that there's anything on it yet!

If anyone wants to find it, PM me, and I'll let you know what it's called smile

CheerfulYank Tue 26-Jun-12 14:55:55

I'm sure some of the other Americans have already offered, but I would be more than happy to send him a letter and some stamps from Minnesota! smile And DS, who is almost5, would love to send him a letter I'm sure. smile

JustFabulous Tue 26-Jun-12 15:07:11

This is the first time I have seen this and it has made me a bit teary blush.

Reminds me of when I was younger and I had a lot of pen pals. I have one now but she is more a friend than a pen pal as we have met and text a lot as well as write.

I still think of YU who lived in Japan and we became penpals through school. We wrote for quite a few years and then it just stopped. I would so love to hear from her again but have no idea how to find her.

I was the same justfabulous, I had a penpal in France, I lost her address and she wrote again asking why I was not writing back and saying she was sad but did not include her address sad

On a happier note my postman who has been looking at me suspiciously for the last week, commented this morning as he has delivered a postcard each day since Friday of last week from different places around the world. He definitely thinks I am up to something blush I fear he is going to report me as a international secret agent grin

and can I just say dd got a postcard from Japan today from mirai and it arrived in 3 days!!!! I have had English post take longer than that.

Thanks Mirai!

JustFabulous Tue 26-Jun-12 21:17:35

Oh, that is sad verity sad.

AllYouNeedIsAClickyBallpoint Wed 27-Jun-12 10:51:00

The FB page should be up and running now (but there's still nothing on it!)
So pm me if you want the name smile

AllYouNeedIsAClickyBallpoint Wed 27-Jun-12 10:51:43

mirai Wed 27-Jun-12 11:01:10

AllYouNeedIsAClickyBallpoint Wed 27-Jun-12 13:51:00

Hi, I am in Bahrain if that is any help?

BikingViking Thu 28-Jun-12 20:24:44

Have also liked - is that my postcard on the right there? You need to photo all the stamps and add the photos so that we can all see (small project, should only take you a couple of days or so grin )

AllYouNeedIsAClickyBallpoint Thu 28-Jun-12 21:19:55

It could be Biking grin
I've lost track of everything and everyone at the moment!

Update today -

ICutMyFootOnOccamsRazor Sat 30-Jun-12 03:04:57

I love this thread! It's fantastic smile dp has been rolls that when we have kids I'll be asking mn for pen pals for them :D I'm not abroad so can't help, though would send a postcard from brighton if he really wanted one grin
