We Believe You: Police and Crime Commissioners elections - are you in Cumbria?

Following on from our We Believe You campaign on rape myths, we have approached some candidates in the upcoming Police and Crime Commissioner elections to hold campaign events concentrating on sexual violence, and looking at the police's role in combating rape myths and encouraging victims to come forwards.

Police and Crime Commissioners are going to have wide-ranging powers to help set the crime and policing agenda within police forces, so we think it's important that they should hear directly from members of the public about what their priorities in office should be.

We're very pleased to announce that Pru Jupe, the LibDem candidate for PCC in Cumbria, is going to be holding the first of these events this Saturday (October 27) between 2 and 4.30pm, at St Andrew's Church in Penrith.

Pru has invited the PCC candidates from other major parties to attend, as well as local stakeholders.

What she needs now is interested members of the public to come along, ask questions, feed back on your perception of how the Cumbria police force deals with sexual violence, and generally contribute to the conversation, with the hope of informing the aims and agenda of whichever candidate is ultimately successful.

If you're in the area, or know people who are, please do spread the word about this event - it would be great to have a good turnout and demonstrate to the candidates that this is something the electorate in Cumbria feels strongly about. And as ever, if you're on Twitter or Facebook, please share the details (Twitter hashtag is #webelieveyou, and Pru's account is @PruJupe). Encouraging local press and broadcast representatives to go along would also be great.

And if you do go along, please post here to let us know how it goes!

Will forward this on to friends in the area.

<faints that something is happening in Penrith>

Wow, something's happening in Cumbria? Will let all my friends up here know about it.

ReeBee Tue 23-Oct-12 22:58:20

I'm out of the county this weekend but will pass on to friends.

ScreamingManAndGoryOn Wed 24-Oct-12 10:13:04

Is this going to be how we discover all of the Cumbrians on MN? grin

Yes - all six of us grin
Will pass it on to friends too.

iseenodust Wed 24-Oct-12 15:02:36

Not in Cumbria but think anything to raise the profile of these elections is great.

Leafmould Wed 24-Oct-12 15:41:46

Screaming man. . . There's clearly not that many!

qo Wed 24-Oct-12 15:43:10

I'm in Cumbria, unfortunately I'm out west and I'm working on Saturday anyway!

katkouta Wed 24-Oct-12 17:33:08

I'm in Cumbria but unfortunately not near to Penrith, will share though smile

RowanMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 24-Oct-12 17:41:57

Hurrah at all the... um... Cumbrians?

Have added it to the Cumbria Mumsnet Local page grin

ScreamingManAndGoryOn Wed 24-Oct-12 17:45:23

Yes, Cumbrians smile

Sadly I don't live near Penrith, but I've sent it over to some of my work colleagues who live in that neck of the woods.

TheAngelsHaveTheOod Wed 24-Oct-12 19:28:43

An in Cumbria ( used to only be two of us on here that owned up to it!)
Am too far from Penrith though.

Had the two women on my short list if who to vote for but there wasnt a lot if info on any of them that I could find.

TheAngelsHaveTheOod Wed 24-Oct-12 19:48:04

There's different meetings around the county on different topics. Think there was Barrow, Alston and Carlisle anyway. It's on her Facebook page but I can't C&P it

TheAngelsHaveTheOod Wed 24-Oct-12 19:49:00

2 in Penrith as well

ScreamingManAndGoryOn Wed 24-Oct-12 20:54:56

I may be able to make the Carlisle or Barrow ones depending on whether I'm working there on the day. Will go and have a shufti.

qo Wed 24-Oct-12 22:16:43

I could maybe make Carlisle if not working as well

I think this new post needs to be reported and publicised all over England. I see adverts encouraging us to vote, but only recently did I discover the P&CC is a political posting - so probably no clue about policing at all.

If I was in Cumbria I would go along to hear what is being said.

Oh and in my area (Thames Valley) our candidates get 5 minutes to speak.

Midge25 Thu 25-Oct-12 19:34:27

Cumbrian but moved dahn Sarf ... Will alert pals in the area

Leafmould Thu 25-Oct-12 19:45:04

Trouble with Cumbria, is that if you live in Workington, for example, it's quite a trek to Penrith, Carlisle or barrow.

Jax teller... What forum is it that they are getting 5 minutes to speak at?

TheAngelsHaveTheOod Thu 25-Oct-12 20:15:23

Alston is probably nearest for most of the west coast.

MavisGrind Thu 25-Oct-12 20:52:29

Another Cumbrian here. Not available Saturday but will let friends know. Would be interesting to hear what was said if any Cumbrian MNers could post after the meeting?

VitoCorleone Thu 25-Oct-12 21:43:52

are there any in other areas MNHQ? or hoping to be?

RowanMumsnet (MNHQ) Sat 27-Oct-12 11:59:24

Thanks very much for all the alerting/word-spreading: and yes, we'd love to hear any reports of how it went.

We've just had word of more We Believe You events in Manchester and Cheshire next week with the Labour PCC candidate Tony Lloyd; will post up details in a separate thread once this event today has concluded, but if any of you are Mancunians/know some Mancunians, here they are:

WEDNESDAY 31 OCTOBER Tameside Women's Group, Hyde Football Club, Ewen Fields, Walker Lane, Hyde, Cheshire SK14 2SB, 18.30

THURSDAY 1 NOVEMBER, Bury, Alana's Beauty Heaven, 46 Cecil Street, Bury, BL9 0SB, 11.30

FRIDAY 2 NOVEMBER, Mechanics Institute, 103 Princess Street, Manchester, M1 6DD, 15.00. This one will also be attended by MPs/Shadow Cabinet members Stella Creasy and (possibly) Rachel Reeves, and by Manchester Central by-election Labour candidate Lucy Powell, as well as Tony Lloyd (Labour candidate for Manchester PCC).

(Sorry for the Labour-heavy emphasis there - we have approached three Conservative PCC candidates as well, and are waiting for word from them.)

NormaStanleyFletcher Sat 27-Oct-12 19:31:37

Is that you Chaos?

NormaStanleyFletcher Sat 27-Oct-12 19:33:16

On a serious note - you may want to change thread title to reflect the greater manchester element that is there now.

I would have missed it if I wasn't so nosey

RowanMumsnet (MNHQ) Sun 28-Oct-12 11:15:39

grin

Thanks Norma, will do in a mo...
