Multiple births

Very personal question: have any of you had twins and NOT had stretchmarks?

I am pregnant and all being well will continue with a twin pregnancy. I am 11wks 3 days and my tummy has popped out and my appetite is much more demanding than before. Had two single pregnancies and managed to go from 8.5stone to 10.5 stone and no stretch marks.

Read last night that stretch marks with a twin/multiple pregnancy are inevitable and am hoping that I am going to be contradicted by you MumsNetters!!!

Please tell me if you did have stretchmarks, how much weight you gained. If you didn't have any stretch marks how much weight you gained.

Thank you in advance for sharing your personal information!!!!!

I got v bad stretch marks I'm afraid. I think I gained about 4 stone too. I can't say it bothers me, they are my battle scars for survieving a twin pg!

I had no strechmarks when I went into labour but afterwards had lots - ugly purple ones everywhere.

Did not get a huge bump - babies were 6lb and 5.5 but don't know how much weight I gained.

Sorry not what you want to hear

Ha ha ha - I had them before I had twins! I think stretchmarks are largely genetic though - my mother had 4 kids and not a single mark.

I gained 2 stone but only got to 7 months - babies were 2.7lbs and 3.2lbs so little ladies. Much to my horror I still looked about 6 months pregnant a month after giving birth but then it suddenly fell off and 5 months later I was back in my old jeans - hooray!

Afraid I got stretchmarks too - and mine were both 5lb 15oz...

Weightwise though I only put a stone and a half on but had lost a stone in the first three months due to sickness! Infact I was wearing clothes I hadnt worn in years after I had them!

I put on 2.5 stone during my twin pregnancy but looked absolutely huge as it was all out the front. I was quite smug about not getting any stretch marks but a week before the babies arrived a load of stretch marks appeared all around my belly button and are still there now, 5 years later! My girls weighed 6.2 and 6.15.

I don't have stretch marks and have 7 year old twins. Had 2 single pregnancies too and expecting #5 now and still no stretch marks. I gained about 4 stone with the twins and 2 stone with type singles.

I have no stretch marks at all on my tummy. I have a few very fine pale ones on my thighs. (Definitely not being smug - you should see the rest of my legs, oh boy, I wish I could trade for stretch marks ).

I put on 4.5 stones with my twins and had no stretch marks.

At my last scan, the midwife kept caressing my bump because she could not believe how soft and smooth my skin was for a 39yo!

No stretch marks for me, but I don't know how! I put on at least 2.5st (weighing myself was/is not one of my favourite hobbies!) DTs were 4.2 and 4.6lb at 35 weeks

My sister had twins (4.5 and 5 pounds). She had an incredible, beautiful, huge bump - all out front and absolutely no stretchmarks. When the twins were three months old, she was asked by a very reputable London modelling agency whether she wanted to work for them.

use clarins body tonic on your bump - it works wonders and is esp for stretch mks

Thank you for all your responses. It seems 50% will gain stretchmarks and 50% won't. I have very feint stretchmarks on breasts and thighs from yo yo dieting in my teens and dreaded stretch marks on my tummy during my first pregnancy. I was careful with my weight and didn't gain any on my tum and didn't even have the linea niagra (sp?). But read in pregnancy book that with a twin/multiple pregnancy there is an increase from week 24-28 in amniotic fluid and weight and that stretch marks were inevitable. Started feeling ill in addition to 'what was I thinking of having another baby only to be a twin pregnancy'. I have 2 pre-schoolers so in a bit of a panic.

I was surprised by some of the low birth weights and wondered at what age gestation the babies were born. Also, did any of you have the cvs or the amniocenthesis?

No stretchmarks for me with either my first singleton pregnancy or my twin one...but a horrid vein on my leg which I'm told will require surgery to remove instead!! I don't know how much weight I gained - but I do know I'm still trying to shift some of it .

Re your subsequent question, my DTs were born at 37+4 weeks weighing in at 5lb12 and 5lb7. I didn't have any tests other than the nuchal fold test at my first scan, which was when I found out I had two babies on the way .

Congratulations by the way!

SHouldknowbyfriday - mine were born at 39.5 weeks - had to be induced as were showing no signs of emerging. They were boh 5lb 15oz. I did not have cvs or amnio - like tracykb just had a nuchal fold scan at 12 weeks.

My DTS were born at 34 weeks and were 4lb 12oz and 3lb 1oz respectively. The smaller twin had stop growing properly at 29 weeks and so was closely monitored. The doctors took the decision to deliver them immediately following my 34 week scan following concerns about him not receiving enough oxygen or nutrients. They stayed in SCBU for 3 weeks and two and half years later they are thriving well.

I had bad stretch marks when pg with DD also had a C-section so got a big scar from that aswell, one of the mw at the hospital told me I should get some Bio oil, it cost around £8 for a small bottle but it really helped my stretch marks fade and my scar has nearly dissapeared.
I am also having twins and will 100% be using it even though it will cost me a small fortune.
I think I will save it for after the birth as I don't know if it stops you getting stretch marks or just helps them fade after you have got them.

Terrible strechmarks here- I try and think positive like Kelly but don't always succeed! Not sure how much weight I put on but the boys were 6lb and 8lb.

My dts were born at 29 weeks and were 2.91/2 and 2.13 1/2. They are 8 now and you would never believe they were so dinky and poorly.

Good luck with the close age gaps, i had my dd when the twins were 20 months, then had ds #3 when dd was 23 months, then ds#4 2 and a half years later. Im prg again due in may and will have 6 under 8! It cant be that bad or i wouldnt keep going

It's not inevitable. Some people just don't get stretch marks. I got a few from my singleton pregnancies and to be honest the twin pregnancy made no difference.

Congratulations with the pregnancy. I gained the same amount of weight as I did for the others. I had enormous bumps, the only difference with the twin and singleton pregancies was that my tummy hasn't returned to its washboard state (ok so it was never washboard it was a gentle curve... but my gentle curve vanished and I suppose I ought to put a bit of work in to get my gentle curve back as opposed to my "are you sure you're not pregnant" curve)

Sigh................

I didn't get one stretch mark with my twins. Don't know how much weight I gained but they came at 32 weeks, 3lb 2 oz and 3lb 15oz.
