Fighting to be first / in front. Aarrgh!

I have gorgeous (but aren't they all?!) ID boy twins who are 2 and a half. They go through phases of getting on really well, or fighting all the time over everything. At the moment, DT1 wants to be first at everything - first down the stairs, first through the stairgate, first to go outside.

When we go out, I have them on reins, and then they are constantly trying to be the one in front, even though the reins are the same length.

I remember going through a similar stage with their big brother, but it's getting really wearing with the two of them at the moment. Do I let DT1 go first every time to keep the peace? Or is that being unfair on his brother? (I try to remember who went first last time and take it in turns, and I also try not to let DT1 push his brother out of the way, if DT2 got to wherever first). Any tips on how to get through this, or is it the usual 'this too shall pass'

Not this is going to help but I know a set of identical twin men, both are early 20's...they still try to "be the first" against one another Confused
