Skyfall - if you haven't seen it perhaps best not look?

Not seen a movie thread about this. So here goes?

Saw it last night, and was pretty disappointed. Never felt shaken or stirred. The pacing was deadfully uneven. And Dench was on screen waaay to much. ( Thank the lord she's out of it).

I could see the tension between old/new Bond with nice touches, but having the Aston /Martin only out for one trip seemed a bit mean. Quite liked the digger on back of a train scenario, and Ms Moneypenny was v cutely introduced. And Albert Finney was hardly recognisable!

It's going to be really hard to get back up to the standard of Casino Royale, imo.

anyone else?

We saw it yesterday and quite enjoyed it.

I agree with the pace issues and both of us were a bit <eyebrows raised> at the sudden nightfall during the last section.

Some of the product placement riled me but oddly not the beer one which I found out later is the one people were narky about.

I thought the tube crash was wasted and unnecessary.

Thought the chinese (puppet type) fight sequence was brilliantly put together and I really enjoyed spotting the nods to previous films throughout.

Glad to have seen it but it probably could have lost about 15 minutes fairly easily.

PanonHigh Sun 28-Oct-12 13:12:45

yes it was long wasn't it? The product placement by-passed me tbh! I guess after all of the hype I was expecting more. Still a reasonable filum. The tube crash has been done before in DieHard ( I think) and a couple of other disaster films from the US.

dalek Sun 28-Oct-12 22:05:50

Just been to see it and I thought it was fab!

PhyllisDoris Tue 30-Oct-12 22:40:36

Me, DDs x 2 and DH loved it! Best Bond film in a long time. What product placement????

boogiewoogie Wed 31-Oct-12 21:06:53

DH and I saw it last night and really enjoyed it. I thought it was way better than Casino Royale and the product placements were not as blatant and annoying as it was in CR.

It will be interesting to see Ralph Fiennes in future Bond films as the new M, ditto Naomie Harris filling Samantha Bond's shoes. ROFL at Q being a young nerdy comp sci.

motheroftwoboys Thu 01-Nov-12 13:02:18

Loved it and didn't notice any product placement so it can't have stuck out!

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt Thu 01-Nov-12 13:06:44

I thought it was really, really good. Completely different fropm Casino Royale, but tbh I think it was the perfect Bond film for 2012. It didn't take itself too seriously.

I really liked Naomie Harris, thought it was very clever to have her introduced as Miss Moneypenny.

Ralph Fiennes was great.

I liked it - it reminded me a lot of the Dark Knight in some ways.

it was great to watch it in a packed cinema, and people seemed to enjoy it (the best bit was everyone cheering when the Aston Martin came on). I think all it needed was Sean Connery in a heavily disguised cameo (he would have been great in the Albert Finney part).

i think it must be the most successful Bond film in ages - I have never known Bond films to have so many packed out showings in the cinemas, and for teenage girls to attend in droves. DD has seen it 3 times with different groups of mates!

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt Thu 01-Nov-12 13:07:16

Bond should NOT have cried though.

PhyllisDoris Thu 01-Nov-12 16:41:28

Did he cry? We weren't sure whether it was water dripping from his late night swim.

BeatTheClock Thu 01-Nov-12 20:02:46

I thought Skyfall was excellent. I wasn't sure whether to go or not because I didn't much enjoy Casino Royale. Very glad I went.

fengirl1 Thu 01-Nov-12 20:13:23

That's all very well.... BUT did he appear in his trunks at any point? grin

CitizenOscar Thu 01-Nov-12 20:33:15

Not usually a bond fan but I really liked this one. So beautifully filmed, smart & funny & contemporary.

snozzlemaid Fri 02-Nov-12 20:29:48

We all loved it. Even dd (11) who's never seen a whole Bond film before.

Valdeeves Mon 05-Nov-12 03:38:38

I enjoyed it - especially Javier Bardem - he was very scary.
However I felt it lacked the glamour of Casino Royale - I missed that.
Just why does one of the Bond Girls always have to die in a horrific way after he's bedded them?

recall Mon 05-Nov-12 04:56:50

Product placement - Range Rover, Discovery, Defender, Sony, Barbour, Omega, Heineken...

I still loved it grin I loved all the country stuff, DH has already got the watch and is now after the Barbour jacket...he can fekk off though, its £420 shock

recall Mon 05-Nov-12 04:59:03

I felt a bit sorry for the gf in the scene where he was sulking in the shack sad

justbogoffnow Mon 05-Nov-12 05:47:31

We took our dc's to see it and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. I though Sam Mendes did a great job and Bardem was a brilliant baddie. Soooo excited that Ralph Fiennes now 'M'. I liked Casino Royale, thought the next one (title escapes me) was pants.

Cinema packed when we got there so had to sit virtually at the front, which was actually rather good.

Does Daniel Craig win 'actor with the bluest eyes contest'?

akaemmafrost Tue 06-Nov-12 00:43:31

I loved it. Did you see how furious James looked when they blew up his car grin?

The bit at the enquiry was the best for me when the baddies arrived to get M and everyone leapt into action, Mallory included. Loved that. Q is perfect too. I noticed the product placement but it didn't detract anything from the movie for me. Loved seeing where James came from and his unswerving loyalty to M. It was just brilliant.

BegoniaBampot Tue 06-Nov-12 22:50:05

just saw it and thought it was good. Loved CR but this flowed better and Craig was better here as Bond. hadn't read any reviews or spoilers so had no clue as to how it would unfold. and yes, he shouldn't have cried.

EverybodysSpookyEyed Tue 06-Nov-12 22:53:21

I liked it but there was one bit that raised my heckles,

he identifies the fact that the bond girl has been sexually exploited most of her life, then he shags her whilst fully aware she is likely to be killed for helping him

BegoniaBampot Tue 06-Nov-12 23:25:51

yes, the shower scene did make me go Mmmm a little, as you said, she has been sexually exploited and abused only to have Bond turn up in the shower assuming she was up for it, so possibly sexually exploiting her too. Wonder what he would have done if she had said, 'err, no thanks love!'. it was like a throwback to Connery style bond just grabbing the girl and having his way without much say from her.

SlipperyNipple Wed 07-Nov-12 15:45:29

I really loved the film but wish it hadn't had the shower scene. Or at least it would have been nice to have seen her start relations as it were.

Also he had just shagged MonneyPenny...seemed a little soon. Couldn't he grow up a bit in his relations with women?

Maybe sometimes he could just not be in the mood and go to bed with coco.....perhaps not!

SlipperyNipple Wed 07-Nov-12 15:46:23

The next film could have him being referred to a sex addiction therapist.

Erebus Wed 07-Nov-12 17:49:48

There's a whole thread about Bond sexism on MN relating to an article Giles Coren wrote!

I had no problem with 'the shower scene' tbf. And I felt she was, in fact, up for it! Remember, this is 007 not a counselling session.

The scene that made me- um- shudder? React? -was Raoul unbuttoning Bond's shirt and running his finger over Bond's scar. A great scene tinged with dry humour ('What makes you think it's my first time?').

In all, I confess that if I were Bond-geek I might not like it as much as I did. It's a different style of Bond altogether, I think far better suited to 2012 than say Brosnan's Bond would have been, all suave beefcake, a complete caricature. Craig's 'vulnerable' Bond made for a way more interesting experience for me (knocking 50 as I am!) along with the enjoyment of the 4 young teenage boys I took along- we all emerged a bit shell shocked!

I think Craig has found his 'Bond-stride' in this movie, and it'll be a hard act to follow.

Finally, even the Bond-baddie had a point: M did bloody well betray him, big time! He really did have 'a cause', albeit one he was pursuing in a rather unhinged way!

BegoniaBampot Wed 07-Nov-12 19:13:14

Slippery - that's why it was surprising. The last 2 movies showed Bond as a much more restrained modern man when it came to sex. In QOS he didn't even boff the main Bond Girl. CR as well, he didn't shag the sexy seductress but fell in love with Vesper. Yip, I know way too much about Bond.

EverybodysSpookyEyed Wed 07-Nov-12 19:18:33

I can live with the sexism in bond as it is expected an obvious.

The shower scene just seems to be her payment to her for rescuing her. It just seemed like yet another man exploiting her

Other than that I enjoyed it! Although I didn't think he had slept with money penny.

I liked the baddie - he was suitably unhinged!

nkf Wed 07-Nov-12 19:22:14

With Bond movies, I usually fall asleep during the pre-credits but I stayed awake for most of Skyfall. I quite liked the old/new stuff and thought the baddie was a goodie. Thumbs up from me. I must have dozed through the shower scene because I don't remember it.

msrisotto Wed 07-Nov-12 19:28:13

I didn't like the shower scene either, nor the scene where she was shot.

I saw it last night and really enjoyed it, I was gripping DH's arm.
Didn't like the shower scene but overall thought it was good.
I loved "Welcome to Scotland". grin

Methe Wed 07-Nov-12 19:36:20

I loved it! It was a proper bond film unlike the last 2 Craig bongs which have been rubbish!

CelstialNavigation Wed 07-Nov-12 19:42:18

I liked when he tried to assure the caretaker that he had everything in hand and didn't need him and got called a "jumped-up wee shit" for his pains grin.

I found it very good.

FloralWellies Thu 08-Nov-12 23:19:12

DP and I have just come back from seeing it and thought it was brilliant.
It was like a proper film with a nod to all of the Bond touches, instead of being one cliche after another.

I loved the camp baddie, his opening scene with Bond was genius and he out acted even Daniel Craig. He even died in a funny way; tutting with annoyance!

Also loved the night shots of shanghai and the burning backgrounds in the scotland scene were stunning. Sam Mendes is an amazing director

Erebus Fri 09-Nov-12 14:34:06

Floral- via DS I was looking at a 'making of Skyfall' site on youtube (I think) where they showed the banks and banks of dazzling yellow tinged lights used to illuminate the final scenes, pretending to be the light from the burning building behind them and out of shot.

Clever.

I liked the Raoul Silva role, too- what I did like was the fact he had a damn good reason to loath M for her 'betrayal' of him, it made his anger more 'real' and less 'cartoon baddie'- and didn't he have the sexiest scene, plucking open Bond's shirt? grin No misted shower screens there!

Piffpaffpoff Fri 09-Nov-12 14:41:17

'welcome to Scotland' got a big laugh when I saw it Sauvignon - I'm in Scotland grin.

FloralWellies Fri 09-Nov-12 14:56:07

Erebus I will look up the making of skyfall on youtube.
Yes Raoul "fondling" Bond was very sexy! Javier Bardem was really superb, I loved his love hate relationship with M (Or Emma!!)

Interesting how the first 3 Daniel Craig bond movies seem to have set the scene explaining Bond's past and how he became 007. I wonder how Bond will be interpreted for the next film...

wintera Sat 10-Nov-12 07:47:25

Slippery - when did he shag Moneypenny? I thought she just give him a shave!

Erebus Sat 10-Nov-12 16:07:04

I maybe wrongly 'assumed' the save morphed into a shag, I must say! grin . Some have said the immediate next scene's fireworks was 'code'....

zamantha Sun 11-Nov-12 09:12:49

My DD of 13 said: "It's really good isn't it!" First time for her. We went with the family - not often can I get my teenagers to go with me.

Enjoyed it - setting throughout was fab - Shanghai Such a world first city now, all that glass and elevator stuff - great cinematography, Chinese market and Scotland - enjoyed the film for views alone.

Liked the car chase. Was interested to hear Craig did a lot of on top of the train stuff himself.

Was really surprised M died - found it quite thrilling and enjoyed her performance. Agree 2012 needs a a slightly more pyschologically clued up Bond character and it worked for me.

Cos I'm a softie, did not like girlfriend being shot with the whisky!

Did think sexy scenes were kept to minimum which I think is good.

boogiewoogie Sun 11-Nov-12 21:29:22

I don't think he did it with Moneypenny. They are meant to have a flirty "platonic" relationship in the office and whilst I think Moneypenny is attracted to Bond, I think she knows her place. <<Recalls a scene with Samantha Bond fantasising about Bond>>

There was no scene of him and Moneypenny having sex, so I think we must assume they didn't.

I thought the Shanghai fight scene was beautiful, with the lights.

So, we watched this last night. I liked it, but it's not as good as Casino Royale IMO. However, I really liked Naomi Harris as Moneypenny, Ben Whishaw as the new Q and so excited to see Ralph Fiennes is the new M. I did love the cinematography, Shanghai and Scotland looked fab. Javier Bardem was a good villain. As others have said, I didn't like the shower scene or where the poor girl was shot, I was sad, thought she was the Bond girl too. I liked it, but didn't love it.

MarshaBrady Sun 24-Feb-13 07:59:05

I liked it.

Except Dench managed to irritate, too stroppy with Bond and I felt sorry for the Javier character. So grim in parts.

Shower scene was too incongruous. She was good though in part before.

littlewhitebag Sun 24-Feb-13 19:23:47

I watched it for the first time last night. I wasn't sure what to expect. DH is a big Bond fan and had seen it with DD1. I usually find Bond films a bit crass but i loved this one. I was just so much more modern and unexpected. I adored the new Q as a nerdy geek and am looking forward to seeing more of the new M. I think my DH looks a bit like Daniel Craig so i am a happy woman!!

schilke Wed 27-Feb-13 19:20:45

I've just watched it too. I prefer Casino Royale. I think this is partly due to me having listened to hundreds of people tell me Skyfall is the best Bond film ever over the past few months. Dh thought it was better than CR, but he saw it with our boys when it first came out.

Dh also thought Moneypenny had slept with Bond - I didn't. Loved the new Q!

pinkpaws Fri 01-Mar-13 19:25:00

Hi i liked it but yea know what you mean i felt it was abit slow in places. But i did watch it with the family on our family pizza nite so do feel i could do with having peace to watch it again. I did love the new Q however very clever
