Reading between the Wines - Improbables book

I didn't necessarily LOVE this book, the genre isn't usually my scene- but liked the rhythm and writing. I didn't realise I'd read other works by this author until much after I had read it- and I think knowing that they had written previous page turning books would have made my expectations higher

So, it turns out I've already read this book. I am a fan of the genre in general and really enjoyed this one. For me, it was more about the characters than the plot. I think that's one of the things this author does best.

I am SO glad I didn't realise who the author was before I read this- I would have been very cynical all the way through.

I actually really enjoyed it.

It felt like quite easy reading- it didn't really go too far into any deep emotions which is where I think it fell down. I like a book to explore subtle emotions and this had a good twisty plot but not so much emotion. But that's probably just my genre preference!

I also wish with a detective genre that we could be given a few more details so we had more of a chance of guessing the clues ourself, because some came a bit out of nowhere I thought.

However that also added to my enjoyment. It was an enjoyable twisty turny book and I liked the two main characters. I could definitely read more of them.

I've read the sequel to this book but hadn't read this one.

Without giving too much away, the author has written some very popular books in a different genre, which I have always been a bit sniffy about TBH. I was surprised therefore by how much I enjoyed this one.

The writing style wasn't subtle (a few too many adjectives, a few too many long-words-where-short-ones-would-do) but it was very readable. It was one of those books which you feel like you can happily snuggle up in bed with, and read for hours. The characters were well-drawn, it was interestingly plotted, and I loved the London setting.

Agree with Luckiest that the plot conclusion did seem to come out of nowhere, and I still don't understand some of the things that happened (probably need to go back and re-read and see what I missed). There wasn't that nice "Aha!" feeling that you can get at the end of a really good detective story where you realise that the clues were in front of you all the time.

So the ending was a little disappointing but I really enjoyed the rest of the book. Would happily take a future sequel (guessing there will be more) on holiday - or it would be a perfect book to read when laid up with the flu :)

I must say I was so excited to get this as I adore a good crime novel, however once I had read the blurb and I realised who the author was I felt rather apprehensive due to their previous work - this is written under a pseudonym( if you're lurking before readingWink)

Anyway, I really really enjoyed it. Yes, there is often too much detail and perhaps it is 100 pages too long but it is well written and the characters are brilliant. My favourite is Robin ( was there meant to be a comparison to Batman/Robin? .....) and I loved the complexity of CS.

I felt that the huge amount of detail slowed down the pace of the book and I must say that the twist at the end was not a complete shock. There are already a few more books in this series and I will be reading more.

A super book TIG thank you. Definitely my favourite so far!!!

I knew who the 'author' was before i read it

I was never fussed about reading one of the detective books as i wast sure whether i would enjoy it even though i really enjoyed the authors other genre

Glad i read it, smidge too much detail to start with about the 'hero' would have preferred for his back story to evolve but i thought the plot was good and i do love a nice twisty ending

Would read more in the series
