Need Help - MMC in Jan, still bleeding a lot

Hello,

I am new to this board and need some advice.

I had my 12 week scan on 18th Jan and was diagnosed with a MMC. I was told that the baby stopped growing at 8 weeks. I chose the natural option and was asked to come back in 3 weeks for a test.

On 5th Feb, I had a urine test at the EPU and was told it was negative.

On 14th Feb I had what I thought was my period. But on 15th I had very heavy bleeding including 3 episodes of what seemed like gushing blood (apologies if this is too graphic). Spoke to my GP who asked me to monitor it and go to the A&E if it was too heavy, but at that point it wasn't. The next day I had another episode and then no bleeding for a couple of days. I thought it had settled down, when it started again but more like a heavy period.

This continued for a week and I sort of managed, but today almost 3 weeks after it started I have two episodes of severe bleeding when I have been out and about.

I am waiting for the GP to call me as they are shut this afternoon. Couldn't get through to EPU but spoke to someone else in the Mat ward who suggested I go into A&E.

I really want to understand as I was given no information on what to expect, has this happened to anyone else and how long could this go for?

It is now nearly 10 weeks since the date I MCed.

Many thanks for your patience and advice

Hi there so sorry to hear of your loss, i too had a similar experience but mine was due to an incomplete mc. I also had a mmc which went on for weeks. Have you also had a scan to check that it isn't incomplete or you may have an infection. I would definately go to a&e if your bleeding gets worse as they may scan you. I hope this is of some help to you, hope you feel better very soon.

Hello,

Thanks for your reply and kind words. I have not had any scan. Just a Urine test on 5th Feb. Is this an ultrasound scan or an internal scan?

I am hoping it will resolve itself, as I have waited so long

Hey

Sorry for your loss. I think you should go to your EPU for an internal scan - could be retained tissues. Important it gets seen to so that you don't get an infection.

9 weeks after my ERPC, my periods had not returned and it was upsetting me. A scan reassured me that there was no blockage, incomplete MC.

All the best.

Hello,

Thanks for all your messages. I did go in to the EPU on Friday, and after the internal scan the Consultant booked me in for an ERPC. The lining of the uterus was thickened and there was lot of clotting, etc. etc.

After waiting for the op all day, finally went into surgery on Sat afternoon and am now back home with all of that behind me.

I think had I been given better advice after my first scan, would've opted for ERPC straight away instead of waiting and torturing myself for 7 weeks.

But it is over now.

Thanks,

In 2007 I had a similar thing to you. Had a scan at 10 weeks showed a foetus with no signs of life that had made it through to about 8 weeks. I had no signs of mc just on one day back pain that I have only experienced in labour and the minutest spotting that could easily have been missed. I was told that my cervix was pretty closed and that it looked like my body would take weeks to naturally expel the pregnancy. I couldn't emotionally deal with that and opted for the ERPC. I was terrified of this, having a general and being out of control but felt extremely refreshed after the op, like I'd had the best nights sleep ever. After that I was emotionally wobbly for a while but at least physically there were no ongoing physical symptoms to deal with, I think that would have been emotionally really difficult to deal with on top of the fact of the pregnancy not working out.

It's sad that you weren't given more information about how long it can go on for and how emotionally painful it is. I think its difficult to predict what will happen but you should have been given an indication of the range of possibilities.

It does all get easier. But make sure to grieve and take really good care of yourself in the short term.

In 2008 I had the 3rd child I so wanted and right now am technically 8 weeks pregnant but a scan last week showed 2 empty sacs, one definitely a mc as was deflated and shrinking. Am now waiting to see what's in store. Am shellshocked at being pregnant again and not sure how I feel about that, can't wait for my next scan so I know one way or another and can start to deal with what comes after.

Take care
