positive pregnancy test 3 weeks after erpc

Hello.

I had an erpc 3 weeks ago. I did a pregnancy test today hich still shows positive. I saw my GP today as I had an appointed because I was still bleeding. It seems that the bleeding is calming down but he said he was concerned preg test was still positive. Need to do another one next week and if still positive I've got to go back to GP. He said that my discharge letter from hospital said it was a straight forward procedure so therefor they should have got everything out. But I have passed some quite big clots.
He said possibly there is still something left and I could go back and have another erpc but he said he doesn't think it is neccessary as it should eventually come out. But he said he was rather puzzled by the positive pregnancy test. Anyone else had this problem?

JennyJW i'm sorry about your loss, it could be a new pregnancy if you still was trying again after your m/c.

I had a m/c last year nov, and after 4 weeks i was still showing a positive pregnancy test. I thought it still could be the levels not dropping quickly.

Then i went back to the doctors after about 9 weeks cos it still was showing positive, they sent my for a blood test, and my blood test came back high considering i had a m/c.

Doctor thought it could be a molar pregnancy so they sent me for a scan straight away, to my surprise lady was scaning me and she said i was nearly 10 weeks pregnant.

So i'm hopeing that you get the news that you want to hear. Good luck and please let us know the out come.

I;m sorry for the loss of your baby.

Your HCG levels could easily still be high enough from your previous pregnancy to show up in a pregnancy test. The length of time it will take for HCG to get back to zero will depend on when your pregancy ended. When I had a mc at 12 weeks (the baby stopped growing at around 6 weeks) it took around 30 days to get back to zero. When I had one at 8 1/2 weeks it took a week or two. When I had one at 6 weeks it took a few days.

It is of course possible that there might be something left, but I wouldn't worry too much about that yet. Wait another week or two and see what happens.

Thank you for your replies. I'm definately not pregnant again as was told to wait to have sex until bleeding stops. And I'm still spotting.
It was at 13 weeks scan I found out that baby had stopped growing around 7-8 weeks so maybe that is way it takes longer. Just thought that you would be back to normal quicker after an erpc than natural miscarriage.

Hi jenny so sorry to hear of your loss.
I am too having a mc which was a mmc 8 weeks ago and i bled very heavy for 3 weeks. I was told to do a pregnancy test and it was positive and returned for a scan which showed products and a sac still there. After more bleeding and another test was still positive. Scan showed still small sac. Last week i was given misoprostal and have had heavy bleeding ever since. Done test last night and was negative. Have to do a second in a few days to make sure. It may be a good idea to just contact your epau and ask advice as you may be at risk of infection if the erpc hasn't worked. Everyone is different i guess but with all my mc's the tests have been negative after a week. I do hope this helps you and all turns out ok for you. Best of luck.
