How usual is a MC at 12 weeks?

A friend of mine is 12 wks and has had scans showing heartbeat and all well last week. Today she has a small bleed and obviously thinks this is going to be the end. I was just wondering if many people had a scan with a heartbeat and then had a miscarriage at 12 wks? I just want to give her some hopefully encouraging news.

i had a miscarriage at 11 weeks after seeing the heartbeat at an early scan (due to bleeding), but then i've also had bleeding till 23 weeks, and everything was ok, dd is now nearly 8. if the bleeding continues, or she's having any pain/discomfort, i'd suggest she goes to see her midwife or gp to put her mind at rest.

With my DS (now 18 months) I had LOTs of bleeding at 14 weeks after a great scan and NF results at 12 weeks. It was a "threatened miscarriage" and I was really scared, but all was well. Was bright red, lots of it and then spotting lasted about 48 hours.

So bleeding needn't be the bad news it seems at first. Best of luck to her.

after a scan at 10 weeks with a heartbeat the chance of miscarriage is 0.6%- stat- from miscarriage association:
www.miscarriageassociation.org.uk/ma2006/information/ultrasound.htm

Hope that stat helps to reassure a little. Fingers crossed for her.

As Thandeka said, it would be very unusual to have a mc that late.

Hope all goes well for your friend.
