Miscarriage/pregnancy loss

Need advice on how to help natural miscarriage along

I have been reading many of the posts on this site over the last couple of days and found them very comforting in such an emotional time. I found out by scan on Sunday that my pregnancy had failed (I was 6 wks) and I opted to go home to miscarry with a follow up scan booked for this Friday. I desperately want to avoid an erpc which I'm sure they will want me to have if I don't get the all clear. I have mostly been passing watery blood for the past three days but tonight I have passed some dark red, almost black, large clots, however still no 'products' as the doctors call them (so sorry for tmi). Is there anything I can do to help this miscarriage along? Any advice or your experiences would be much appreciated, thankyou. X

So, so sorry to hear this ella.

I had a mc (several years ago) - the baby had no heartbeat when they scanned me at around 10 weeks and they thought that he/she had died a few weeks before. I remember the very clearly.

In my case "nothing" happened naturally, until the night before I was due to go in for d&c. Ime (which is limited to this one experience) after I started to pass clots then things speeded up after this. However it might be very painful (it was for me). I understand that for some women the physical pain isn't unbearable, but for me I had to go to hospital.

Not sure if there is anything you can do to speed it up.

Sorry to hear about your mc ella, I've just gone through the same experience. I miscarried at about 5+4. I was bleeding for a week before but on Saturday I started bleeding much more heavily, like a normal period really, and passed a couple of large clots which I presumed at the time were... well you know what. I won't call it products Anyway, I had a scan on monday and it showed nothing in my uterus, so perhaps you have already miscarried and when you have your scan on Friday there'll be nothing there too. What's your bleeding like now? Mine continued quite heavy for another day, and is now much lighter. I'm hoping it'll stop in the next day or two.

I hope that helps, it's such a rotten experience, so I can totally understand you not wanting to have any more intervention. That was definitely what I wanted to avoid.

So sorry to hear what you're going through ellaeleven.

My experiences of MC are;

  1. Had a very early, natural MC, at about 6 weeks, just heavy bleeding and cramping for a couple of days then all over.

  1. Had a late MC in July (17 weeks) - it started at home, got contractions then the baby actually came out (traumatic) but the placenta did not. I went to hospital where they waited for me to try to pas the placenta naturally. Spent all day contracting and on gas and air - ended up in theatre having placenta removed surgically.

  1. Most recently I had a MC at almost 10 weeks. I opted for a D&C (is this the same as a ERPC?) and had it done ysterday. IMO this is the quickest, least painful and least traumatic method. The bleeding has already pretty much stopped and I'm not in any pain.

The emotional healing will take longer.

Sorry for your loss, take care of yourself.

Sorry to hear this - i too have had 2 early mc before my current ds, with one it was clots then the bleeding stopped and all was claer at the follow up scan and with the 2nd i did pass a kind stretchy matter like poss a sac (sorry tmi) - anyway i was advised to rest up but when it became apparent i was actually going through a mc i carried on physically as normal hoping the forces of gravuty would assist which i think they did. Whether this is recommended i dont know. It not a pleasant time either way and i hope you get thought the unpleasantness soon.

There is nothing you can do to help m/c along naturally. Just make sure you to back to GP/hosp if you bleed for too long. I ended up in A&E on a saturday night with my 1st m/c. Not pleasant.

Thankyou for all of your advice and kind words. I'm so sorry you've all had to go through this experience. This has been such a confusing, distressing week. I had an early scan at 4+5 wks as had severe left sided pain and as they could'nt see anything in the uterus they thought it was ectopic. Lots of coming and going and normal doubling of hcg levels (even the doctors were confused) and a scan on Sunday revealed it was in the uterus after all, was about six weeks but no heartbeat

LittlePeanut I read your story last night and it has stayed with me all day today. You have amazing strengh and are an inspiration to me.

HeadFairy have been reading your posts on conception board. I wish you so much luck and may join you on there soon

Thankyou again everyone. This board is getting me through a tough time. X

Please don't use any herbs etc op, they are very dangerous and untested. It is not worth the risk. I'm sure you already know that though. So sorry to hear about the mc, very unfair :(

Hi mkenzie so sorry to hear you are going through this. Medical management normally consists of a tablet you take by mouth to block progesterone and allow your body to recognise the pregnancy has ended, then vaginal pessaries that you insert twice 24 hrs apart a few days later. When I had medical management I was already bleeding but MC was incomplete, so I didn't need the tablet, just the pessaries.
If you've only had the tablet then you probably will MC eventually but it could be a slow process. Are you supposed to go back for the pessaries? I only had to wait an hour in hospital after inserting the first one then was sent home with the second dose to do myself, and it all happened after the second dose.
I can understand why you don't want to go back to EPU, but it is important that you are followed up to make sure the miscarriage is completed. If you don't have an appointment for a follow up scan you need to get back in touch with them.
I have a friend who swears by digging the garden (or anything very physically strenuous) for getting a miscarriage going, and I think there is probably something in the idea of accepting mentally that the pregnancy has ended that allows your body to complete the loss, but I don't think either of these things remove the need for medical supervision. I really hope the physical process is over for you very soon and as atraumatically as possible, it is a horrible thing to go through.

I found out at 10w 1 day that My baby had passed at 9w 4days..I had a second opinion to be sure and once the fact that there was no heart beat was confirmed I decided to have the miscarriage naturally. I waited three and 1/2 weeks before I started seeing a sm streak of blood, practically nothing..that day I started taking BLUE COHOSH ( liquid form, comes in an eyedropper like bottle that I bought at Clarks Nutrition). Blue cohosh is a herb that helps naturally contract your uterus. I took two dropper fulls every hr or two for about 4-6 hrs and three days latter I had the miscarriage. It was extremely painful! More painful than giving birth to my now 2yr old son. I had contractions from 11am till 7pm--Bt I passed the sac (was actually able to see the pinky size sweet baby body) and then continued to bleed for about 10 days after like a heavy period and the last five days I took methergine to make sure my uterus was cleaned out completely. I am so sorry for your loss! Remember that your child is in heaven with Jesus and one day if you confess Jesus as your Lord and savior you too with see your sweet angel!
