Miscarriage/pregnancy loss

Miscarriage but 'legally' must be re scanned in 2 weeks?

I had a scan yesterday at 9 weeks after some discharge on wiping for 1 day last weekend no other symptoms at all. There was a sac but it was small and empty, much smaller than should be for 9 weeks. The midwife said 'legally' they had to do another scan in two weeks even though she can tell it isn't going to be a viable pregnancy. I think I was in a bit of shock so didn't really ask questions. I have no symptoms or bleeding do I just have to wait it out? What is the 'legal' bit? I'm going on holiday tomorrow and feeling anxious about when it is going to happen.

I have had two pre 12 week miscarriages before some years ago the first very early and happened naturally and quickly the second managed surgically which on balance would be my preferred option.

Don't know why I'm posting really, think just needed to get it off my chest.

I'm not sure. Why are you seeing a midwife not a doctor at this stage? Could you ask to be scanned asap to check there is nothing retained that could cause you to get an infection?

Because technically your dates could be wrong so they wait for the sac to grow to a certain size before they can perform a D&C. This means that they don't risk ending what may be a viable pregnancy. It may not take 2 weeks but that is a rough guideline. My sympathies- I found the wait long and painful.

In my case the doctor said 'look I am sorry as I know and you know that this isn't a viable pregnancy but I have to follow the guidelines.'

Thanks for the replies. I'm sure of the dates. It's not viable. Just seems a bit rough if we all know it's not viable to have to wait it out.

Yeah I was 100% sure of the dates but they can't take our word for it. It does seem unfair but I can see what the logic is.

So sorry op that ur going through this. Same happened to me. 8 week scan showed a sac, only 5-6 weeks. Which was impossible as i was 100% sure of my dates and when I conceived. They advised that the only way to guarantee it was not a viable pregnancy was to re-check that there had been no further growth in 2 weeks time. They couldn't destroy a potentially viable pregnancy without being absolutely sure. Daft as we all knew it was hopeless. I found the wait ahead an unbearable thought but thankfully miscarried naturally within 2 days of the first scan. I am not sure what you would prefer, but I hope u have some good support around u for whatever way it goes. It is so unfair and I'm so sorry. Sending a hand to hold x

My scan at 8 weeks showed no heartbeat or growth since 6 weeks. They said go back in 2 weeks incase dates were just wrong. I miscarried at home 2 days later. I didn't go for the scan (rang mw and told her) hospital rang after I missed the scan - mw hadn't updated my notes but they didn't seem concerned I hadn't attended.

I have had 9 miscarriages. Never went back for a rescan. All dealt with naturally, rather than medically. 2 were found to be dead when I went for a scan, no one contacted me to go back to be scanned

I think 'legally' was the wrong term for her to use becuse it implies you might be in trouble if you don't go for the second scan and it's made you more anxious at what is already a distressing time. But as others have said, according to professional guidelines a second scan is needed to make absolutely sure you wouldn't be ending a viable pregnancy. That's what she should have said. So sorry you're going through this OP.

Thanks everyone for sharing your stories. I know early miscarriages are common but it really stings when you feel surrounded by bumps and newborns at every turn.

Hi this happened to me at 12 week scan last Monday. Had an empty gestational sac. Sonographer was very matter of fact and didn't explain what was happening nor offer for me to speak to Dr or midwife. I eventually called the Epu the next day and they insisted I come back in a week. Even though there was an extremely unlikely chance of any viable pregnancy. Luckily my private health insurance covered a consultant and an Erpc op so he did a scan and found the fetus and no heartbeat. So he kindly arranged the op the next morning. It's really really sad that the epu wouldn't do anything to help. I feel for you. Xxx

Hi all I'm new to this but just wanted a little advice. Had a normal full period on 20/07/16....then had light bleeding/spotting around the end of August for roughly 4 days. Found out 16/09/16 that I'm pregnant. Did a clear blue digital and it said Pregnant 1-2. Started bleeding the same day, started off pink then turned red, not heavy, no pain, just mild cramps. Went to early pregnancy unit, where they put me down as I should be 8 weeks pregnant ( going on my last period 20/07/16). Did an ultra sound, nothing there, and also transvaginal ultrasound, nothing there. Did my bloods, told me my hcg was only at 18, so seeing as there was nothing on the ultrasound and my levels were low, 18 hcg....they said you aren't pregnant anymore and I could go home. They were calculating my levels as they said I was 8 weeks pregnant. But surely if I was 8 weeks pregnant the clear blue test would have shown a bigger result than 1-2? I keep taking tests at home and the positive line is getting darker each day. Any advice would be appreciated Smile

Rach going by what you've said I think the spotting etc in August could have been a period and you are now 4 weeks pregnant, which would work out with clear blue saying 1-2 and tests are now getting stronger, at 4 weeks nothing would have shown up on scan. Maybe you are still pregnant! Xx

Also you should have asked or been offerered another blood test, Hgc doubles every 48 hours, that would have given a more definite answer, can you go to doctors and ask for one?

Namechangedjustforthis thankyou for replying...no I was never offered another blood test, was just told to do a pregnancy test in 2 weeks time and let them know the result. But then it's making me think miscarriage as I am bleeding now?xx
