Miscarriage/pregnancy loss

miscarriage at just under 6 weeks - how painful is it?

Am just wondering as I had a big bleed with one v large clot (size of my hand) last Thursday evening and the bleeding has eased off since. Still have some backache but it's not awful and have only taken a couple of paracetamol yesterday. But when I went to my IVF clinic last Friday they said there were further large clots still showing on the scan and they gave me strong painkillers and said I may have a lot of pain over the next few days as they pass. So, I'm just in limbo and worrying that the worst is still to come and can't stop feeling on edge about it all. My EPU appt isn't until next Friday. Ours isn't walk-in unfortunately.

So sorry to hear about your loss OP. Flowers

It is similar to a heavy period in pain. But for some Owen t can be worse, for some it isn't as painful.

Thanks Alpaca. I guess it does vary from individual to individual but the nurse was really emphasising that I may need the strong painkillers they prescribed and that I should go to A&E if the pain became too much, even with the painkillers. I'm definitely in discomfort and have cramps and lower backache but it's not as bad as I was preparing for but keep wondering if there's worse to come.

Yes, they do say that. I had quite a bit of Morphine after my ERPC as I was quite sore. They prescribed me some strong painkillers for at home but I didn't need any, just had strong cramps and felt very tired.

Have they given you options on how to manage your misscarriage?

Thanks again. Well, EPU wouldn't see me last week as I'd had a scan at the IVF clinic already. My appt at EPU is next Friday so depending what
shows up at that stage, they'll decide next steps. IVF clinic gave me info sheets on the various options though.

Been to the clinic for another HCG blood test this morning. Result of last Friday's was 5000ish but they explained that only by comparing that with the result of today's will we know more. Should have the result sometime after 3 today. More waiting....

I'm still bleeding. More like a period now.

Any news OP?

Yes, they measure the two results. Typically your HCG levels should double every 48 hours if the pregnancy is 'viable'.

Thinking of you Flowers

Hi Alpaca - it's all over. Today's result was 1000 ish so a big drop. Feeling pretty devastated and daunted by what we'll have to go through all again in due course to try again.

chdmum - thanks for that info. I hope I'm over the worst now but as it was an IVF pregnancy I've been taking hormone support until today and my clinic said the bleeding could get quite a bit heavier over the next few days now the hormones are stopped.

Oh I'm so sorry, OP.

If you want to ask anything about the ERPC (they call it SMM now, I believe) or even if you just want to chat please feel free to PM me.

Thanks

It's a horrible time, don't push yourself to get over it until you are ready to.

Sorry I meant 'get over it'. That sounded a bit harsh and certainly wasn't what I meant.

Thanks for your kindness Alpaca. Much appreciated. It still feels unreal tbh. My EPU appt is on Friday. I'm hoping to avoid any intervention if possible. IVF - even if just a frozen embryo cycle like this was - involves so many interventions (hormone tablets & injections and repeated scans) that I'm hoping everything will have come away naturally as psychologically that'd be much easier for me.

DH and I - me especially - feel daunted about trying again too. And then there's the expense...

Vicky, so sorry for your loss. Miscarriage is cruel enough no matter what the circumstances but personally I think when people have struggled to conceive as we have and / or have repeated losses, it makes it that bit harder to deal with. Take care.
