Miscarriage/pregnancy loss

what can I expect in next week?

I started bleeding 2 days ago (supposedly 10 weeks pregnant) and had a scan yesterday which confirmed no heartbeat and baby had died at 6 weeks.
I've been told that things will just take its course now. I'm bleeding, no pain, a few small clots - should I expect something bigger to happen when the baby comes out? I'm just not sure what's going to come and whether I'll know that it's happened?

Boboli I'm so sorry you have lost your baby. A natural miscarriage is different for everyone, but it may help you to have a read through this thread on what to expect and how to cope. The Miscarriage Association also has a lot of useful information and a helpline.
I found the hospital gave next to no information on what to expect, or what was 'normal' and what required checking out. IME you will get fairly painful cramps and heavy bleeding for a while before you pass the sac/embryo, which you may well not recognise at a 6 week stage, it is often passed as a big blood clot, then bleeding should settle right down to more period-like proportions.
Contact the hospital if you get pain you can't cope with on normal painkillers, bleeding which soaks a maxi pad in less than an hour or if you feel unwell, faint, dizzy etc.
You should have a follow up appointment for a scan to make sure your uterus is clear, or have been told to take a pregnancy test in a fortnight to ensure it is negative.

Please feel free to post as much as you need to for information or emotional support, it's a horrible thing to go through but it does help to "talk" to others who have been through the same thing.

Boboli, sorry about your baby. The exact same happened to me, same dates and everything.

I had 2 days of period type bleeding, followed by 3 days (so far) of painful contraction type cramping and some large liver like clots. When I say 3 days, it hasn't been constant, say an hour or so per day.

Not sure what's going to happen next or how long it is going to carry on for, but everyone is different.

Boboli, I am so sorry for your loss. I hope you have someone with you while you go through this?

My MMC was pretty much identical circumstances to yours, and like bakingtins I was sent home with no info other than I could expect some 'period type' pain and bleeding. I wish!
I had no further bleeding for a few days, just brownish spotting. I then had heavy bleeding for two days (heavier than a period) with some small clots and strong cramps which got noticeably worse in the evening. The evening of day 2 of the bleeding was really quite bad pain wise and actually made me sick, I wasn't sure I could cope with it and DH ended up calling 111 who sent paramedics out. By the time they arrived I'd decided to see it out at home, but their advice was reassuring (both female, both with personal experience of MC).
After that night of unpleasantness things got HUGELY better almost straight away, light bleeding with no cramps for 3-4 days then a bit more heavy bleeding and then that was basically it.
My top tip is just make sure you have plenty of painkillers and take them as soon as the cramping starts. You can alternate ibuprofen and paracetamol if you need to. The thread bakingtins linked to has lots of fantastic advice,

I hope you get through this ok, thinking of you Thanks

Hi - things got much worse today. Felt like mini labour contractions and have passed big clots. My husband had the paramedics out as in so much pain. Has subsided in last hour as I think most has come out.
Even after reading the thread and your messages, today came as quite a shock!

Thanks katatonic. Any pampering would be very welcome that's for sure. Agree it's traumatic - I found out today that I am really guilty of underestimating what a miscarriage actually is physically. For just a 6 week pregnancy, I am quite shocked at what has had to pass... And that's just the physical aspects. There's all the emotional stuff too!
