Miscarriage/pregnancy loss

I think I have lost the baby

whilst at work in Friday I started to bleed, noticed it when I wiped. I was 6 weeks. I went to mw and then home and had more bleeding at home, some in the loo paper some in the toilet. It was like the start of a period. It stopped at 6pm and I haven't had any more since.
I feel rotten, can't get up without feeling very sick and dizzy and my boobs are still agony to touch.
I have to get bloods taken today and Wednesday but I am worried I haven't bled 'enough' as there didn't seem to be anything like clots.
I don't know what's going on, I half think I might still be pg which is agonising, not knowing.

Aww, please go and see someone. They can do a scan and find out what is happening. Bleeding is common in early pg so a scan is the only way you will find out for sure. Good luck with the appointment x

Mw said they wouldn't scan me til 7 weeks. Am in limbo really and it's driving me crazy!

The bloods will tell you what's happening. A continuing pregnancy will show a steep rise in HCG. It's a waiting game just now because of course you could start to bleed more heavily as well. Be very gentle with yourself. You need to drink plenty, use paracetamol and hot water bottles and rest. No going to work for a few days. I hope everything is ok but you are quite right of course - there is a chance you've lost the baby so best really to try and mentally get your head round that. Is there anyone with you?

So sorry to hear this. Go to your GP or Early pregnancy unit; your midwife is wrong, they should scan you to make sure it's not an ectopic pregnancy.

Hi purple,

I'm sorry you're going through such a difficult time.
I'm 9 weeks pg and had some bleeding at 7 weeks. Like you I was in bits, and the lack of urgency demonstrated by the doctors was hard to handle.
After some advice received on mn, I found the closest walk in early pregnancy unit and went there the next morning. The baby was fine. I don't want to give you false hope, but I know that the worse bit is not knowing what's happening. Maybe try to find a early pregnancy unit near to where you are or if you can afford it, there's always private clinics.

Thinking of you!

I'm sure I have had scans before 7 weeks. I have a history of bleeding in early pg.

Thanks guys. I am mentally preparing myself for having lost it but I think what is confusing me is the sickness which is worse now than it was before the bleed. I have been lying down pretty much since Friday morning and the only time it goes away is when I am asleep! What a good excuse for a lie in!
My dh has been with me all weekend and is off now for a few days due to his shifts but I have to go back to work on Wednesday as we are expecting an audit and I have a lot to do. Plus my boss is not overly sympathetic about time off. Being a bloke and all!
We don't have an early preg unit here I don't think, I live up north in the middle of nowhere. I'll ask today when I get the bloods done at the gp but it's prob better to wait til I get results. I wonder
How long that takes?

List of early pregnancy units here. Some you can self refer. Some you need a GP referral. Regardless, if they're not open or not able to see you, a gynae or labour ward WILL scan you. I'd phone your gp now. Because hcg results do come back fairly quickly but if you're 6 weeks, you've had some bleeding and you feel unwell then they need to make sure the pregnancy is correctly located. This is easy at 6 weeks. They can do it abdominally even. Ring them back and tell them you've been feeling unwell, had unexplained bleeding and want to see somebody today.

Oh thanks show that was kind of you and there is one near me too which I amazed about. I have Apt for bloods at 12 so I will speak to gp then if he is about and ask for referral. I bet they will say just wait for blood results tho! in fact I might just ring them and ask their advice before I go and see what they say. Thanks again x

So sorry you are going through this. I know it is the worst feeling not knowing. I completely agree that you need a scan to check for an ectopic pregnancy. If it is ectopic the HCG levels will continue to rise which is what the blood test measures for. So bloods alone will not rule out ectopic unfortunately. You could be a little sneaky and tell the midwife you are experiencing pain down one side (ie. ectopic symptoms) just to pressure them to doing an early scan? Hope you get answers soon! take care.

Ah thanks bebe, good idea, which side would it need to be tho? How clueless am I?! It had occurred to me that it may be ectopic as I feel so rotten.
Ive never had all day dizzy and sickness like this is my life, felt queasy in the mornings with ds but it was manageable.

I'm not sure what side Purple but I am sure a quick google would help! Maybe you could see a GP rather than a midwife? They might be more freaked out by the possibility of an overlooked ectopic? Good luck...let us know...

Lol will do am just ringing the epu now as it was answering machine earlier. The lady us going to ring me back about 1pm. Just googled ecoptic and the sick/dizzy/hot feelings are listed as symptoms of this. Going to stop googling now before I convince myself I have another random condition! Hopefully I might get seen tomorrow

I wouldn't get into the territory of inventing symptoms for myriad reasons. Unexplained bleeding and feeling unwell are two red flags and should be treated as such.

It's unlikely that it's ectopic but it's one of those things that has more positive outcomes the sooner it's treated and should be ruled out asap.

If you experience any more bleeding, pain (including pain in your shoulder tip), feel worse etc then please get checked out asap.

It's a heartbreaking time. I've been there and had it go both ways (one miscarriage and two healthy babies both with bleeding at 6/7 weeks) and the not knowing is awful.

Well I have a scan booked for Friday they don't scan before 7 weeks but the lady on the phone was so lovely and she thinks that because I am feeling so rough that there is a chance baby is still there.
I went for bloods today and in total contest the nurse was horrible, she didn't know why I was there or what tests to do and tried to send me home again saying it was my fault. Then she said I suppose you do know if you ate pregnant or not! I explained about Friday's suspected mc and she said well I don't see why you are here then. I was feeling too dizzy to bother arguing just asked her to take the blood then speak to my midwife.
Grr.

I'm sorry you had to deal with that. She sounds deeply unpleasant. Have you arranged to go back for repeat hcg levels or are you waiting for the results of this one first?

Report
purplehonesty · 14/11/2011 13:50

Thanks again show for the advice. I said to her on the Phone I was worried it could be ectopic and she said no. Sick and dizzy are not symptoms on their own.
I feel a lot more positive now having done something about it.

Oh I don't know show. She just said she would leave the bloods for someone else. I was booked in for wednesday for 2nd test so I guess I'll go for that. She didnt know what hcg was and kept saying you mean 'hb' don't you?

Dear Lord - she sounds awful! When you feel up to it complain to the practice manager.

She didn't know what hcg was? Oh my giddy aunt. It's hard enough dealing with this without coping with awkward HCPs. If you do feel able, please mention the gaps in her knowledge and bedside manner to your practice manager at a later date.

Please keep us up to date. Will be thinking of you.

I think I would rather have been seen by your giddy aunt actually! I will speak to the practice manager, I know her, she was my predecessor at work.
On a positive note my boss rang today to see how I was and told me to take it easy and stay home til I knew what was happening. Wow!

Hi everyone good news, I had a scan yesterday and turns out I am still pregnant. They could see a 7 wk little bean with a heartbeat but they could also see an area of bleeding which made them think I could still miscarry.
I have to take it easy and not lift anything, not even ds and get plenty rest.
So fingers crossed all will be well.
Thanks to you all for you replies and advice this week x
