Miscarriage/pregnancy loss

Can someone talk me through a miscarriage a bit?

I am feeling very confused, as I and the gp think I've miscarried, but I don't know what to expect.

I am coming up for 6 wks pregnant, but on tues am I started feeling very painful period type cramps, which lasted about an hour. I also felt very sick that day, and was a bit of a mess.

The following 2 days I had brown blood in my discharge and slowly started to loose all my preg symptoms - breasts became no longer sore, I am no longer hungry every minute, nor tired out.I don't 'feel' pregnant. But there's been no other bleeding.

So my question is would this be classed as a missed miscarriage? If so, can I expect the foetus to come away soon, or could it potentially stay in there for weeks? Or months?

Any input wd be gratefully recieved as been googling lots, but can't get specifics...

sorry you're going through this.....

I would suggest that you get in touch with your local early pregnancy unit, and see if they can get you in for a scan. You will at least know, rather than be left guessing.

I have had 4 mc,s, and my 1st was at 9 weeks, but when scanned, they saw that I had an empty egg sac, so the pg had not progressed beyond 6 wks - therefore, this was classed as a mmc, as my body still thought it was pg, so I carried on til 9 wks.

My mc's have been very painful, apart from my last which happened at 5 wks, and I bled over about a week and a half.

If you do get scanned, you can then choose to have an ERPC (under general anaesthetic), or do medical management, which I think is with drugs to help you to hurry the mc along. Or you can opt to do it naturally.

Maybe you will be very lucky, and have not had a mc (fingers crossed for you), but you definately need to get some answers. You will have to wait until Monday tho, as EPU only open on weekdays.

Good luck.....and a bug hug

deliakate so sorry you're having such an uncertain time...

what you describe could be early signs of MC, OR equally could be incidental (nausea), implantation (brown CM) and imagined (losing symptoms).

A scan at this early stage is not guaranteed to give you any clear answers; generally you would get a more certain picture after 8 weeks.

Agree you should make contact with your EPU; many will not offer to scan you unless you have had bleeding (rather than just spotting/brown cm) but at least you have registered with them. Paying for a private scan is an option, but consider what I've said about inconclusive scans this early on.

The waiting and seeing is painful I know; red blood loss and cramping would indicate a MC is on its way. A MMC is when you are scanned and there is no viable pregnancy but the body hasn't reacted to it to start MC on its own. As LMS says, you then have 3 options to consider.

Try not to worry - but I know that is totally impossible. Hope all works out for you. Keep us posted.

I am sorry that you are going through this, I agree with the other posters that you should get in touch with your local EPU and ask them to scan you to see what is happening. Then you can decide how to handle what is going on if indeed it is a MC.

I MC in dec at 9 weeks and they thought that the fetus was about 6 weeks. Mine started with spotting and blood when I wiped. That was on a thursday night, the following saturday I passed the sac and fetus. It was painful but not so much so that I could not manage it with paracetamol. I bleed heavily for less than a week because I remember being out the following Wednesday.

The second MC I had was a MMC, at 10 weeks a scan showed the fetus had stopped growing in the previous 2 weeks. I decided to let it happen naturally and it took a further 10 days before the heavy bleeding and passing of clots started. This one went on for 3 weeks of heavy bleeding. It also hurt and was very messy.

I know how stressful it is not knowing what is going on and scary waiting for a MC to happen. I hope you manage to get to the EPU and looked at soon.

Take care x
