Menopause

Bleeding/spotting for 6+ weeks

A recent blood test showed I am menopausal. At the time I visited the doctor (for something else) I had been bleeding for 2 weeks but prior to that I had not had a period for 9 months. GP prescribed utovlan (a progesterone tablet) to stop the bleeding. I have now finished the course (having continued to have spotting throughout) and am back to square one with period like pain and light bleeding. Does anyone have any experience and advice?

When you say menopausal, do you mean post menopause or peri menopause? Menopausal is actually when we have no periods at all for 12 months, so had your periods stopped for 12 months before? If not then you are peri menopausal.

You need to go back to the dr. There can be all kinds of reasons for this. I've had friends who have had constant spotting and they have been prescribed progestogens to take all the time, or you might be advised to use HRT to control the cycle, but you should also ask for some kind of investigation - a scan for a start- to make sure nothing else is happening.

Go back to your GP. If you are in peri then all kinds of odd bleeding can help but your GP ought to suggest a scan and maybe other medication to control the bleeding. You ought not to be bleeding like this without some investigation and / or treatment.
