Evening Primrose Oil

I'm waking up to the fact that I might be slowly approaching the menopause. I wake up with night sweats and each month I lose my sanity for a brief moment. I'm probably more anxious than usual. Periods are still regular but heavier and shorter than they used to be.

I don't want to go on HRT because there's a family history of breast cancer. Apparently some natural remedies also contain oestrogen, but I am thinking of trying Evening Primrose Oil.

Does anyone have any experience of Evening Primrose oil? How much do I need to take? What benefits did you experience?

I used to take evening primrose,you have to take the 1000 mg one a day,I took this when things started to change then moved on to starflower oil again 1000mg,its meant to be stronger than EP,I am way down the line from you but the ep did work for a while sorted out the mood swings,hot flushes etc.best of luck

I don't think there is any evidence that EPO helps menopause.

My gynae has written a book on meno which offers alternative and conventional treatments and contains a large chapter on nutrition. EPO is never mentioned.

Every time I decide that PMT is getting too much, I try evening primrose oil, and then I suffer from nausea. So don't like it choclate works better

I'd give the EP a go. A while ago I was tested for perimenapause, which was eventually concluded I didn't have but nevertheless I started taking EP. My symptoms - flushes, terrrible migraines, feeling of loosing it at least once a month, really bad period cramps disappeard almost completly. I went 6 weeks without a migraine which is a minor miracle!!

for the 2nd time today i can recommend this book" Your change your choice" by Michael Dooley, Fellow Royal College of Gynaes.

It contains 50% conventional treatments (HRT etc) and 50% nutrition, yoga, alternative stuff like acupuncture, exercise, changing your diet , with sample daily diets, and lots of up to date medical info.
