Hi Everyone....just joined mumsnet.
After some advice and reassurance if possible.
Just recently found out i am 9 wks pg after having a miscarriage last year. For the past 3 months i have been having period type pains which sometimes appear to be settle and then start up again. I have had no blood loss. Saw my midwife today and she states this can be quite normal as my womb is stretching. I have read lots of books but can't find this in them. Am I right to worry or has anyone else experienced similar pains and gone on to have a successful pg. I am due to have a abdo ultrasound on mon but am really anxious till then.
Any help would be greatly appreciated....please be honest.

hi dpind, welcome to mumsnet, sorry no advice, congrats on your pg though and hope someone can come on here and give you some reassurance

spidermama Thu 23-Mar-06 20:54:25

I always get pains like this in the first trimester, yes. (I've had four kids and two miscarriages) They can be quite strong. I believe they're called round ligament pains. It makes sense that your womb is stretching.

I know it;s really hard to relax when you're pg after having had a m/c though. Perhaps you'll be able to enjoy the pregnancy more in a month or so.

Good luck.

Round ligament pain . Perhaps you could ask for an earlier scan if you want to put your mind at rest?

dpind Mon 27-Mar-06 18:34:33

Hi

Went for scan today and everything looks normal. Baby is correct size for my dates and had a good strong heartbeat. Period pain seems to be settling too. Hope this is a successful pregnancy this time around.
Thanks for all the reassuring messages

I have just found out im pregnant yesterday - according to an online calculator I will be 6weeks! I'm so as my partner and I have been trying for 2 years! Last week or so I have been getting pains very similar to period pains in my abdomen . . . . they seem to come on and off all day (not sharp - just dull) so I hope this is normal - going doctors tomorrow so hopefully he will put my mind at rest. x

Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the board but found it after trying to find information about pain in early pregnancy. I am 6 weeks pregnant and have been having period pain type pains for the past 3 weeks i.e. I think from conception. It started with my normal mid-cycle type pain and hasn't stopped. I had a scan 2 days ago and no reason for the pain could be found but the embryo size was right for dates. Can I really be getting these pains i.e. stretching internally pains when I'm only 6 weeks? Thanks. Sue

becks82 Fri 24-Nov-06 15:17:25

I know all these posts were written earlier in the year but I thought this information I have just found might be helpful for anybody reading this.

"Sometimes pregnant women experience pains that are very similar to period pains. These may occur between the 4th to 6th week of pregnancy. Don't be alarmed as this is probably due to the placenta attaching itself to the wall of your uterus."

It helped put my mind at rest a bit. I am five weeks pregnant, early days but very excited. Good luck everyone. :0

I know it has been a year since someone posted a message on here, but I keep getting period pains too. They are all the time on and off and they come when I eat, or when I'm in bed. I'm about 7 weeks pregnant and quite concerned about it as I have never been pregnant before and I want everything to be ok! I find it reassuring that other mums to be have experienced this too, they should write more about experiences like these in magazines, my first midwife appointment is in 2 weeks and she might be able to put my mind at ease. I didn’t think I would feel lots of changes until I got a bump, but I have got back ache already and hip ache. I’m only 24, but feel really old at the moment as I have no energy. Sorry for moaning on, at least I haven’t started morning sickness yet!!!!!!!

I am 7 weeks pregnant and have just had period pain style cramping in my lower abdomen for the second day running. I was really worried about it until I read some of the posts on this site. It's very reassuring to know that others are experienceing the same thing and that it's probably just due to the uterus stretching etc. As a first timer I'm really grateful that people have taken time out to put their experiences on the internet, it's helped calm my nerves.

HappyMoma Sat 27-Oct-07 22:37:54

I'm just 5 weeks pregnant and have had period-like pains for the past 2 weeks. I've found this page SOOOOO reassuring - 'seems I'm not the only one after all! Thank you.

I'm just veeery wary as this is my 4th pregnancy in the past year. I miscarried the first two both at 7 weeks and the third one, also 7 weeks, was ectopic. So here I am at 41 years 'old', (very old), firing on just one fallopian tube shock but this pregnancy feels different to those I miscarried (oh - I miscarried at 7 weeks about 10 years ago too). All the others I've had intermittent bleeding throughout but not this one :-) So I am hopeful. I 'feel' pregnant too - I didn't for the others.

BTW, I did have one successful pregnancy :-) ... but I had meningococcal meningitis in the first few weeks of that pregnancy shock When I came out of the coma, the doctors advised me to abort my baby saying that 'it' would be born 'a vegetable' or have serious learning disabilities. Believing in divine intervention I chose to reject their advice, ... and, lo and behold, the one they said I should abort is my beautiful, kind, loving, 17 year old daughter who just passed all her 10 GCSEs with As and A*s !!! ... so don't always blindly follow what the doctors say! hmm My advice is to follow your heart, your instinct and any other power you may believe in.

Enough preaching - I am now going to wait (impatiently) to get passed that fateful 7 weeks! And, if this little one's time is still not right, at least my partner and I have had the absolute joy of knowing that we've created a life between us. We love him/her to bits even if our time together is short. :-)

Yours hopefully ... One Happy Moma xx

Hello,
I found out I was pregnant last week, im around 5/6 weeks gone. I also have been having these period pains and keep going to the toilet to check if I am bleeding! I had a miscarriage end of september and had similar pains so am a bit paranoid at the moment. Its a great relief to read that im not the only one with these period pains.
Fingers crossed! Good luck everyone
Marie xx

slsb Thu 27-Dec-07 13:29:40

Just wanted to add my own experience - like Marie, I'm 6 weeks gone and have been having these period pains... I also had a miscarriage in September! The pain was so bad that it woke me twice last night. Off to see the doctor next week, fingers crossed!

mandymama Thu 10-Jan-08 12:10:50

Hello

can anyone advise? Have had normal/regualar periods since having a 3 month depo shot last year following a cyst removal. My next period is not due for another 10 days but for the last 3 days I have had period like pains, very bloated tummy and some nausea. I did a pregnancy test a few days ago and it was neg. Silly really as too early. Could i be pregnant? or any other suggestions? please help!

Smillie Thu 10-Jan-08 14:19:27

Thanks everyone for these reassuring posts.
I'm 7 weeks pregnant, my third pregnancy. First one miscarried at 6 weeks, second was ectopic and like HappyMoma they had to take a tube out. I'm hoping this is third time lucky!

As the last two pregnancies didn't end well, I don't really know what a 'normal' pregnancy feels like, and every pain, cramp or twinge leaves me feeling very nervous.

I had an early scan today, and all looks well - so far so good. They told me that the pains are normal, and not to worry. Easier said than done though... it helps to know there are others out there feeling the same way.
So, fingers crossed!

And good luck to all of you too...

carphel Sun 13-Jan-08 10:00:54

Hi this my first pregnancy, been trying for a while. I'm 5 weeks and really excited, but worried. I woke up with intense period pains in the night. I was doubled up. I've had dull period pains on and off all week. I called NHS direct who told me to see my GP tomorrow. They said it is common to have period like pains around this time but I'm worried because mine were so severe. The severe pain lasted around 10 minutes and I was convinced I was miscarrying. However, there's been no bleeding - so fingers crossed! Also after having a wee the pain eased off! I think I may have to set an alarm so I can wee in the night before the pain reaches this level again!! I need to wee so often. I'd appreciate any reassurance about the severe pains. Has anyone else experienced such painful cramps so that you are doubled up and unable to move? I still have dull period pains now. I'll let you know how it goes.......

melody2 Fri 25-Jan-08 19:08:28

I am so glad I found this page. I am 5 weeks and have been having perios like pains that have been very bad at times for a few days. I even went to the GP who was shocked I had realised I was pregnant at 5 weeks and gave no reassurance about the pains. I am therefore pleased to see that other woman also know they are pregnant early on and also experience similar pains to mine....wish I had logged on here earlier and avoided the gp's altogether for a while longer!!!

Hi Sexy Mummy, This is my first so im not totally clued up on the different pains n stuff. Have you done a pregnancy test??

lola002 Tue 19-Feb-08 13:00:33

Hi, 7 weeks now. Having strange pain in my left side radiating down to my left leg. Sometimes have pins and needles in my toes. Had miscarriage last year at 7 weeks, but never experienced anything like this. Blood tests seemed fine (hcG incresed as should), but i'm still terrified that it could be an ectopic pregnancy. Ever heard of anyone else with the same symptoms?

evenhope Tue 19-Feb-08 13:59:10

mama4628 1) pains are normal 2) I think the MW gives you the forms at the first appt 3) avoid runny eggs, soft cheeses, pate

lola002 sounds like a trapped nerve. I had a pain in my side for a long period of my last pg. They said it was ligaments stretching. My DD is now 11 mo and fine.

hunnimummy

I found this information on an american site maybe it will help ...

Guideline to hCG levels during pregnancy:
hCG levels in weeks from LMP (gestational age)* :

3 weeks LMP: 5 - 50 mIU/ml
4 weeks LMP: 5 - 426 mIU/ml
5 weeks LMP: 18 - 7,340 mIU/ml
6 weeks LMP: 1,080 - 56,500 mIU/ml
7 - 8 weeks LMP: 7, 650 - 229,000 mIU/ml
9 - 12 weeks LMP: 25,700 - 288,000 mIU/ml
13 - 16 weeks LMP: 13,300 - 254,000 mIU/ml
17 - 24 weeks LMP: 4,060 - 165,400 mIU/ml
25 - 40 weeks LMP: 3,640 - 117,000 mIU/ml
Non-pregnant females: <5.0 mIU/ml
Postmenopausal females: <9.5 mIU/ml

* These numbers are just a GUIDELINE-- every woman’s level of hCG can rise differently. It is not necessarily the level that matters but rather the change in the level. Also be aware that a pregnancy with low hCG levels can often result in a perfectly healthy baby.

ttcnumbertwo Sat 16-Aug-08 01:01:52

Can someone help me??

My husband and I are TTC, and we had sex when I was ovulating. I feel myself ovulate every month, and also saw the egg white cervical mucus, so I knew it was the fertile time.

Ever since about a day after ovulation (8/10/08), I've had period like cramps that came and went, and NOW I feel an ovulating like pain on my left side (where I ovulated this month). How can I be ovulating when I already did?!? I had stretching/ligament pain with my first pregnancy, but not until 8 or so weeks along...

I'm not due for my period until 8/27/08, so it's too soon to test.

Has anyone felt like they were ovulating again when they were in early pregnancy!??! Thank you for any help you can provide!!!!!

London08 Sat 23-Aug-08 09:41:42

dear ttcnumbertwo,

Try First Response home preg test avail at boots. Says it can tell up to 6 days early.
I've just had a postive pg test (first time) and should be 5 weeks today.....and have had dull aches similar to period / ovulation for the last 4 days.

This site has been so reassuring! I am going with the thought that it is my uterus getting ready!

good luck

Hi

What an amazing site this is, I have already put 2 queries on here and had loads of advice - I have gone on tonight as I am 5 weeks pregnant and have been having period pains all day and they were getting so bad that i had convinced myself I was going to miscarry! I have had one pregnancy before and she is 3 and never experienced this. I feel so reasurred by everyone's comments on - I too have never heard of this in a book!

Skydancer Mon 24-Nov-08 17:54:34

Hi
I am 5 weeks pregnant by online calculator, prob three weeks from actual conception, and am soo relieved to find this site! I miscarried just last month very early on and took a pregnancy test last week as i was getting pains. Turns out im pregnant again but have since been getting period pains that really feel like my period will start! Its good to know that other people experience this and now have my fingers crossed for a healthy pregnancy.

hi my g/f just told me she is having dull period type pain shes currently 14 weeks pregnant, we have alrdy had 2 mis-miscarriages, the 1st time the baby had died at 6 weeks and 2nd time 8 weeks both times there was no bleeding we found out on the 12 week scan both times, however she did have these dull pains b4 on both times. My question is what do these pains mean i have read that its normal to have these types of pains and not to worry unless there is bleeding as well but due to are previous 2 experiences bleeding doesnt seem to apply to the situation. any advice would very helpful

scarystuff Wed 11-Mar-09 17:59:31

I started getting pains the day after I ovulated so just assumed I was getting early pre-period pains. The pains remained but I did a test as have been trying to get pregnant for a while now. I had an ectopic pregnancy a few years ago and lost my right tube so very protective of my left one!! I was very worried about the pains which were (and still are) quite severe and stabbing at times and this site really reassured me that i wasn't alone and other people have pains in early pregnancy with no problems. I'm very pleased to say that I had a scan today (5 weeks) and all is ok so far - it's in the right place and growing normally - yippeeeeee!! just wanted to reassure others like you all reassured me! Fingers crossed for the rest of pregnancy

Murrv Fri 13-Mar-09 18:04:01

Hi All
I have just joined mumsnet & I have to say after reading all of your experiences you really have put my mind to rest!!
I am 6 weeks & 2 days pregnant
On Tuesday just passed I went to the loo & when I wiped I found a little blood on the paper it was very light pink in colour, it wasnt heavy enough to wear a pad or liner, Thankfully I havnt seen any more since. In the last 14 months I have had 2 miscarriages the first pregnancy felt as if everything was going ok until I was in my 11th week & I went to the loo & there was a little dark brown patch of blood on my underwear It disappeared & then it came back again a few days later but as time went by the blood flow got a lot heavier I went for a scan & I was told I was in the early stages of a miscarriage I was told that it had died at around 7 weeks & it can take some time for the body to realise that it is gone, They did a pregnancy test which was pos I was told that the test would be pos until I passed the baby. So I had a D&C.
My second pregnancy I was sooo nervous, The hospital was great & the booked me in for a reassurance scan at 7 weeks, The baby was perfect everything looked ok & there was a strong heart beat!! Exactly 7 days later I went to visit family my brother in law is a sonographer & he suggested that he do a scan I was delighted & agreed to it but my happiness was short lived he could not find a heart beat
As I said above I am now just a little over 6 weeks & im out of my mind with worry!!! Since tue I have been getting period like pains in my stomach & I find that if I walk around or stand for to long I get a pain in my very lower back, I also have been getting a dull period like pain in my legs. Has anybody else experienced pains like this?
I have called my hosp & they told me that they cannot do a scan until im 7 weeks, I am so worried I booked a private scan which i will have tomorrow, Im keeping my fingers crossed!!
Best wishes to you all!!

Hi every1. I'm new 2 this site&am a little worried. I am 5wks pregnant 2day&since last wk have been havin period like pains. Mostly in my lower back&reslly quite painful! I have 2 other children&dont recall having pains this early on with them. Also I did 2home tests on Mon. Both were positive, but a little faint. I then when 2 drs tues with early morning sample. The test the did also was positive, but even fainter. So the sent a sample off with has also come back positive 2day. On tues eve I did one of those clear blue digital tests, which said pregnant 1-2wks from conception. Am I just being paranoid or could something be wrong?! I'm wondering if it's just that I tend to have low hcg levels as I never seem to get that bad sickness etc. With last 2 pregnancies I just felt sick most of time! Please help if anyone has had same experiances!
Sorry for how long this is! X

Hello All,

I have just joined, I wanted to say THANK YOU so much, I have been up all night crying an worrying myself senseless, I have had period like pains on and off all day yesterday and through the night, reading your posts has made me calm down and feel so much better a massive.... PHEWWW, a HUGE thank you to you all xxx

Oh I had better give some details lol I am approx 5 and a half weeks pregnant which was quite a shock as I am 40 and have a 20 yr old son and a 18yr old daughter, my partner and I did want to have one together as my 2 are from a previous marriage and he has one son from a previous relationship. But it came a bit sooner than we expected as I was having tests for very high hormone levels and had convinced myself I was starting the change lol so we were going to wait until that was sorted to see if we could try.

I don't remember getting these pains with my other 2 (mind you it was a lonnnggg time ago lol) and it was scaring me witless that I could be losing our little miracle, as if feels to us.

Once again thank you to all of you.

hugs

Wend xx

Hi everyone

I found out two days ago that I'm pregnant, but although I've had two positive tests I've been having mild cramping (similar to period pains) and very very light bleeding (not even enough to use a pad). I'm absolutely terrified. I have to have a scan next week. Hopefully it will be okay. This is my first pregnancy and we've been 'trying' for ages. How come no one ever tells you that you can get pains in early pregnancy without it meaning that you're losing your baby. It doesn't help that I am major over emotional and crying at every little thing, or that my husband is away with work until oct.
The rest of these posts have made me feel much better though, thanx wink

Hi Everyone, i have been worrying most the night thinking i was going to lose my baby. Im only 3 weeks pregnant and last night i started to get period like pains and very light bleeding but like AngelaCarleen it wasnt enough to wear a pad or a liner. I have 3 children who are all teenagers and never experenced anything like this with them.

Good luck to everyone x x

mummabrown Sun 22-Nov-09 18:59:54

i am really worried...
i am 4 weeks pregnant and i have experiencing period pains for the past few days. 3 days ago i noticed blood when i went to the toilet, it was light pink in colour.
the hospital tested my hcg levels and they was only 47.
i am worried that i may be having an ectopic pregnancy as they suspect i may have chlamydia!
i am convinced i am going to have a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy.

BUT... that's just my story. for reassurance for the rest of you, i also have a 6 year old and i experienced pains early on in my pregnancy with her and my pregnancy was successful. pains in early pregnancy are normal, worrying yes but it could just be implantation pains/bleeding, or pains due to the uterus stretching or simply just your body adapting to change, also pains in place of period is common.
most people do experience pains and go on to have successful pregnancy's so i wouldn't worry to much unless the pains become unbearable and/or are followed by heavy bleeding or fresh red spotting. a small amount of light pink or light brown blood in early pregnancy even lasting between 1-3 days is usually down to implantation.
i am worried about my pregnancy as my hcg levels are low, and i have pains, mainly down one side. if anyone has any advice i am really greatful. good luck everybody xx

I am about 6 weeks along so far and have had similar period like pains in my tummy. This website has been so helpful putting my mind at ease. I am always checking for blood when i go to the toilet and am so scared that one wrong move i might make would cause me to miscarry. Any advice on how to ease my mind with the nervousness? My husband and I are just so grateful to be pregnant and want everything to go well. thanks so much in advance.

hi all. I've been ttc for 2 years now, and every month i'd be going through threads like this, looking for advice on whether or not you could have period pains whilst pregnant etc ... getting my hopes up only to be disappointed, but now here i am finally pregnant smile and yes, i had period pains every day from about 2 weeks before my period was due to come on! in the past week i thought that i had even started on about 4 occasions! I had a feeling i was pregnant as i have been suffering night sickness and there was a change in my breasts... when i am due to start my breasts are sensitive in a painful way but this time they were just sensitive with no pain smile i have taken 3 pregnancy tests .... took the first one on the day that i was due to start, at night time and it was a very, very faint line... the next day i took two more and there was two lines as clear as day! soooo excited. I actually had a old pram from my first daughter lying around for years and years, then the week i sold it i caught straight away ... so being superstitious i think it was a bad omen having it here lol anywho good luck with everything everyone x

I found this thread while I was searching for information about period-like pain in early pregnancy... It's quite reassuring, though my GP wasn't, despite the fact I haven't had any bleeding. I saw him two days ago and he referred me to the EPU. So tomorrow I'll find out, in his words, whether the pregnancy is viable. (I'm 6+5, btw, with a DD of 2.9 whom I'm still breastfeeding. I never had any pain like this in my first pregnancy, though it ended with an emergency c-section.)

Anyhow, the GP seemed to be preparing me for miscarriage, with reassurances that I'm "still young" (I'm 36) and emphasis that any pain was "concerning".

I know I've only 24 hours to wait to find out, but I don't think I can even bear to look at the scan. I want(ed) another baby so much. And I'm exhausted (DD was up half the night vomiting) and trying to prepare myself for the worst.

This thread is bizarre - continuously updated by newbies to MN for SIX years shock
The ops baby must be at school by now!!

Elpis Wed 15-Feb-12 16:48:18

I'm not a newbie, CakeMixture - I'm just struggling to deal with a symptom which my GP tells me probably means the pregnancy is unviable but which others say is normal. I'm sorry if it looks ridiculous from the outside.

Elpis Wed 15-Feb-12 16:51:10

And yes, I really hope everyone here ended up with a healthy baby. But lying here in pain, I was looking for reassurance. On such an old thread that probably was silly. I just have to wait.

I agree with you Elpis I too am looking through this old thread for a bit of reassurance. I had a spell of severe pain earlier this week and assumed I was having a miscarriage. I went to my GP but as I was only around 5 weeks at t-he time, I was just told to wait and see what happens. Well nothing has happened. I have had no further pain and no bleeding at all. Planning on taking a trip to EPU next week when I should be 6+ weeks and can get a definate answer. Hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. Would be great to know how you got on!!

DizzyL

I have good news - at the scan yesterday everything was normal. They couldn't offer any explanation for the pain but confirmed that it would be OK to take cocodamol if it comes back.

I'm still only 7 weeks, so I'm not relaxing completely yet, but it was wonderful to see the foetus pulsing. I do hope you manage to have an early scan too, and that it's reassuring. My GP wasn't, on reflection, very helpful at all. But the Early Pregnancy Unit staff were fantastic.

Elpis
Thats fantastic news, hope I get the same next week! I'm lucky enough to have had one child already and although she was born extremely early it was a pretty smooth pregnancy. On the other hand, i've also had a missed miscarriage before so am prepared for not so good news too. Just keeping fingers crossed.

CakeMixture Fri 17-Feb-12 21:52:20

Elpis - gosh no it isnt ridiculous at all and you arent either! Im sorry if you thought I meant that.

Its just that this thread isnt just old, its ancient grin
I challenge you to find another thread that started more than 5 years ago that has been regularly updated since....... I doubt there are many?

FWIW I had quite a lot of period pain early in both my pregnancies. At the time I thought it was quite common! It was suggested to me (by a non knowledgeable friend) that it was maybe the baby attaching itself!
I hope you have a baby in your arms in seven-ish months time smile

Karla1387 Sat 25-Feb-12 11:00:58

I'm so happy I read this as I was experiencing these pains and was very worried as this is my first. I also suffer from Crohns disease so I didn't know if that had anything to do with it! So much more relaxed knowing this is totally normal, thanks everyone! smile

Kelerina Fri 06-Jul-12 13:37:45

Really reassuring thread, am 7 weeks and never been pregnant before and been having lots of period like pains, not seeing mw until 11 weeks so my mind has been put at ease, thank you all! smile

Hi all, hope you can help me.....I took a weeks course of norethisterone to delay my period whilst on holiday. As far as I can work out your period should start 3-4 days after stopping this medication. It has now been 8 days since I took last tablet and have not started my period. Has anyone else ever taken this? I have had sore breasts for a few weeks, and incredibly light spotting day before yesterday (not enough for a pantyliner) which was very light brown, but have had nothing since. My husband and I had sex during my ovulation period last cycle and am just wondering whether to do test. I figured that the spotting would have ruled out pregnancy?? And ive also been experiencing light abdomen period pains. Any thoughts would be appreciated! (by the way, pregnancy would be a good thing not a bad thing!!)

Hi all, I really hope someone can advise me here- I'm 36 weeks pregnant and getting period pains! I've had a bunch of Braxton Hicks contractions too but this is more like a constant ache just under my bump and spreading to my back, just like a normal period pain if I wasn't hugely pregnant! Is this normal? She will be my first baby and I'm not sure what to expect at this point, but as this has been CONSTANT for almost a week now I am starting to worry.
Thank you for any advice xxx
