Dissertation survey

Hi I'm hoping you could all help me. My son has his dissertation to hand in on Thursday however he's left it really late and still has a survey to complete. I'd be ever so grateful if you could spare a couple of minutes to help. Thank you in advance.

spiderlight Sat 05-Apr-14 18:12:50

I can't complete it - I don't read any of the news websites listed but it won't let me submit the survey without clicking one. That's going to screw his results up - he needs a 'none' option.

Am trying to answer but question 5 wants me to choose one of the options and my answer is 'other' for which there isn't a clicky button.

spiderlight Sat 05-Apr-14 18:14:47

He'd also be better off with multiple choice for 'How reliable do you find this website?' because he could potentially get fifty different answers to code - very, extremely, reasonably, quite, fairly, etc. - how's he going to classify them?

happypotamus Sat 05-Apr-14 18:15:30

I got as far as question 5. He has the option of 'Other, please specify' so I specified an alternative, but the survey does not let me move on to the next page as it says I have not completed the question. There is no dot to click next to Other so it doesn't think I have answered even though I typed in the box. That's a shame as I'll fill in most surveys, but I can't be the only person unable to complete it for that reason.

RhondaJean Sat 05-Apr-14 18:16:11

I've done it for him but, Thursday? Please tell me he at least has hit literature review and methodology written up??

pointythings Sat 05-Apr-14 18:17:22

I've completed it. An 'Other' button would have been useful, but I think it covers the spectrum of right wing/left wing press well enough.

DontCareAboutYourShoes Sat 05-Apr-14 18:28:54

What's the difference between online newspapers and the internet? Aren't online newspapers the internet?!

georgieporgie00 Sat 05-Apr-14 18:31:13

Thank you for all your responses he's told me he's very grateful. Yes extremely late thankfully he has most of it completed this and a conclusion left. In regards to the survey not going past question 5 he's not to sure why this is but thank you for trying.

havenever Sat 05-Apr-14 18:32:02

Ahem...he has had it! He hasn't done the research even and deadline is Thursday? He has to do results, analysis and conclusions??

yes please say he has intro and lit review?

DontCareAboutYourShoes Sat 05-Apr-14 18:34:06

I think he's going to fail if he thinks all he needs to do is this and the conclusion! Hope he remembers to include the fact his results are skewed because his mummy has had to ask people on a parenting forum to help him with his research. It's just so lazy. When I think back to my degree and the thought we put into things. Dear oh dear.

notapizzaeater Sat 05-Apr-14 18:35:21

Done ....

CountryPheasant Sat 05-Apr-14 18:36:01

I've completed the survey. Hope he manages to get it finished in time. Good luck! brew

ExcuseTypos Sat 05-Apr-14 18:42:20

I've done it. I hope he manages to finish it.

Procrastinating Sat 05-Apr-14 18:43:01

Done. Good luck to your DS.

I wrote every word of my dissertation in 24 hours and I got (do I mean scraped?) a first for it. It is possible.

havenever Sat 05-Apr-14 18:46:33

Ive done it, but so agree with dontcare...who was he going to get to answer his survey if you hadn't swooped in OP?

click him round his earhole, from me

georgieporgie00 Sat 05-Apr-14 18:50:21

Thank you ever so much once again and don't worry that clip around the ear has already been provided to him

fledtoscotland Sat 05-Apr-14 18:53:58

Done but it's not particularly well worded. The other option doesn't have a tick box and lumping race & religion together is a bit odd

RhondaJean Sat 05-Apr-14 18:56:16

It's because he's not had time to pilot it, I mean I am a bad procrastinator but he's really taking the biscuit just now!

JacqueslePeacock Sat 05-Apr-14 19:02:23

Hang on, this is a university-level piece of work?

JacqueslePeacock Sat 05-Apr-14 19:02:55

Or have I (I hope) got that wrong and he's a school student??

Chloerose75 Sat 05-Apr-14 19:03:32

I have done it but ditto a lot of the other comments. Can't believe he is leaving it this late and getting his mum to help him out. The survey could have done with a lot more work as well! Is this really the sort of work that gets you a degree?!

georgieporgie00 Sat 05-Apr-14 19:11:04

Although very angry he's left it so late, I am proud of him its taken a lot for him to come this far he had some problems that he fought to overcome.

ginmakesitallok Sat 05-Apr-14 19:18:02

Sorry, but for a uni dissertation the survey is appalling,. Where does he explain its purpose? He doesn't seek informed consent. If he's had problems to overcome the uni should have been roviding support.

Dawndonnaagain Sat 05-Apr-14 19:31:45

gerogie what support, if any, is he getting?

JacqueslePeacock Sat 05-Apr-14 19:37:05

Shouldn't there be some kind of research ethics statement on here? Explicit seeking of consent? (That's before I even get onto huge actual phrasing of the questions). I mean, I've filled it in, but if this were one of my students he would not be passing - and might even be hauled in front of the research ethics committee.

JacqueslePeacock Sat 05-Apr-14 19:37:46

The, not huge. Sorry! Bloody ipad.

KaFayOLay Sat 05-Apr-14 19:38:34

How reliable is the website?

Does this pertain to the availability of the website, or the content?

RhondaJean Sat 05-Apr-14 19:43:44

JAcquesie I think that the ethics thing might depend on what he is studying.

rabbitlady Sat 05-Apr-14 19:44:21

i did it but i think his political perspective is dodgy.

Higheredserf Sat 05-Apr-14 19:49:07

In 20 years of student support in higher ed I have only had one student leave a dissertation so late. I'm afraid he failed but was allowed to resubmit.

Has he asked for an extension?

Each institution has different regs but if he can't get an extension and fails he needs to speak to them about if he fails can he resubmit. All regs will be in the Quality manual or whatever they have called their rules and guidance docs.

No name of supervisor or statement is poor.

"contains child abuse related textual content"

Oh dear Lord. Ethics?

georgieporgie00 Sat 05-Apr-14 19:49:48

Thank you all very much for your responses, he's saying he has enough and is very grateful

OP, did your son get ethics approval from his supervisor or institution to complete the survey? If he didn't he might be on dodgy ground with regards to whether he has met the criteria for passing it. Get him to check, because if he hasn't got approval he needs to investigate the rules for resubmission, as Higher says.
