As many of you know, I started Jump! Mag a year ago in response to the severe lack of decent print comics or magazines for pre-teen girls. From the initial thread asking if anyone thought it would be a good idea, MNetters have been incredibly supportive.
Jump magazine is the UKs first online magazine for pre-teen girls that offers more than just pink lipgloss and celebrity gossip.
Fluff free and Bieberless is our motto.
Jump! Mag features fun articles and creative craft ideas, personal and school/career advice, insights into careers that girls may not yet have considered, articles about children around the world and interactive content, some of it written by their peers.
We feature female role models not celebrities, but sportswomen, archaeologists, engineers, counsellors and councillors. The popular Written By You section showcases the work of our pre-teen readers.
Currently, Jump! Mag is run as a non-profit volunteer led enterprise. We are looking to develop the magazine further, which will involve an initial investment and continuing funding.
The future Jump! Mag will include:
- News and current affairs, presented in an age appropriate manner,
- Computer games, including learning to code
- Amusing videos and comic strips
- Study guides on topics covered in the National Curriculum
- Recipes
- Craft tutorials
- Peer to Peer counselling
- Advice on cyberbullying and using Social Media safely
- Career advice
It will be a subscription-based offer. Contributors will be experts in their field, and they will be given the option of being paid for their articles or donating their fee to a charity benefiting girls and young women.
In order to ascertain the interest of parents in such an online magazine, we have set up a survey. Would you please let us know your thoughts, and share the survey far and wide so that we get a response, not only from MNetters but from other parents.

Thank you.
Well, I can't leave you without a reply! I will fill it in now!
Thank you. Am only posting so this shows up on Threads I am On.
Btw - if you don't have a preteen girl, or have other feedback that didn't fit on the survey, please add it here
I liked the article about Richard III - the articles are really good. Thank you MmeLindt!
Thanks for the feedback so far. I will wait until more people have taken part, and then publish the results.
Thanks, BIWI. I had some excellent assistance when setting up the survey.
I couldn't really fill in the survey as DDs are only 2yo and 4yo. I have subscribed though, I think it will be brilliant for them when they're a bit older.
Thanks, Eau. Glad you like it.
If your DC are too young to report on what they like, fill in the survey anyway. It gives feedback to what people want, and what they would be willing to pay for.
Please add your opinion, the feedback is very helpful. Thanks to those who have responded so far.
More info here about what the proposed would look like. Except it would be done by people better at webdesign than me
I sort of filled it out, MmeL. I don't have a girl the right age, though.
Also, I like your design. Just not, to be honest, the colour.

Couldn't fill it out MmeL as so many of the questions didn't apply to dd.
However, I would like to say that I remember when you launched and I thought then It was fabulous idea and still do. The content is great.
I look forward to a time that dd can enjoy it.

I was dreading you looking at it
It is just to give an impression of how it will look.
Thanks for doing the survey, even if you don't have a child in the right age group.
I really do like the overall design. I think you're heading in the right direction with that.
Now, can we discuss the colour....

DD reads it religiously. She's still tickled you asked her to contribute after seeing her blog which I shamelessly promoted

I wasn't aware of this but have just filled in the survey and will point DD (10) in the direction of the website, sounds great and just what's needed. I can't stand all this 'celeb'-filled rubbish and the stupid words they use - BFF makes me want to throw things!

I am glad to know she still enjoys it. Her blog is fabulous

Hope she enjoys it. Do come back and fill in the survey with her and let us know what you thought
Thanks to all those who have taken the survey, and for the really great feedback.
Getting lots of great feedback, not just from MNetters. Thanks to all who have shared.

How did I not know about this MmeL?
It's terrific and I will be indoctrinating the dds (aged 8&10) into it ASAP.
On phone but will complete survey later
Thanks, Sassy. I haven't really done an awful lot of marketing tbh.
A few people have said that they love it but it should stay free. Which I would do, if I were independently wealthy. If anyone wants to give me a £1m, so I can run Jump! Mag while still being able to feed the family, that would be fab

Mme have you approached schools to see if they would pay a subscription to be able to have the magazine available in the school library?
It is something I know my English dpt would be keen to have- increasing literacy AND promoting equality.
I have a few other ideas of how you could make it an appealing pitch to schools based on the last English update from ofsted on what makes a dpt 'outstanding' that I've just had training in- please PM me if you're interested.

Do you mean a print edition? It is not something that I have looked into, as I think that the printing and distribution costs would be high. And because I think that our DC will rely ever more on digital media, and find it more accessible.
Have thought of approaching schools. I know from our stats that there are schools that recommend Jump! Mag to their pupils. Will PM you, thanks.

No, not print (I quite agree- digital is the future!) but have locked content that school servers that pay a subscription can access?
Oh, interesting idea. So have a separate section for schools? Will look into that, thanks.
