Do you have a daughter who would like to enter a writing competition to highlight International Day of the Girl?

To start, I will say that this is not a commercial endeavour. I am not earning any money from this, and am spending my free time - and likely my own money for prizes unless I can blag them from a company - doing this.
If anyone is upset by this, then feel free to report to MNHQ you big meanie
Ok, that out of the way.
Did you know that this Thurs is the first International Day of the Girl?
Plan has been lobbying the UN for years about this. The idea is to draw attention to the 75 million girls around the world who have no access to education
I wanted to do something for the pre-teen online magazine that I run (non-profit, all done by myself and volunteer writers, many of them girls).
So I have come up with this.
A writing competition for girls under 16y
Topic: What does being a girl mean to you?
There will be three prizes, for the age groups
- under 10yo
- 11 - 13yo
- 14 - 16yo
Prizes to be determined.
If you are interested, check out Jump! Mag for details on how to enter, or PM me
Sounds interesting, but no, I don't!
Have a son who could write a story for international day of the boy though! When is that?
Ooooo, I would love my daughter to write for this, she is currently trogging over the Surrey hills on a DofE expedition, but this is up her street. She just squeaks in at 15 too
Her latest outrage is all the stuff about girls not taking physics. She goes to a mixed school and loves physics and will def be doing it for A level.
Fingers crossed!
I'll promote this at my school on Monday!
WhiteCherry
I don't know if there is a Day of the Boy, but you could start one.
Tbh, if a boy wanted to write for Jump! Mag, I would welcome a contribution. It is not a girls-only space, but the idea behind it was to create a magazine for girls that was not pink and fluffy.
I have 13yo DD and 12yo DN here and they are interested
Will direct them to the website.
Pistey
that is great. I did my DoE at that age, was great fun.
Thanks, Funny. That would be great.
Am I blind - can't see a word limit?
And yes - I loved DofE too! Happy days.
Yay, I love Jump Mag, and have at least one DD who will probably love to enter.
I'll pass it on!
Pistey
I haven't set one. Do you think I should?
Hi there, we've moved this into Media Requests. MmeLindor, we've dropped you a mail
Thanks, Kat.
Sorry, I should have perhaps put it here in the first place. Wasn't sure where the best place was.
If anyone has ideas what I could do for prizes, please let me know.
Thought about book tokens, or stationary?
Thanks MmeL, I've forwarded the details to my DNiece.
It would be quite helpful to have a guide of (about) how many words you want..... are you thinking along the lines of a sort of 'diary' ?
Will ask my dds (when they get back from Scout Camp this weekend
).
I'll see if DD1 would like to do this when she is back from playing football in Brussels later this afternoon.
Am working on some rules right now, Backforgood
Can you tell I have never done this before?
Words: maximum of 700
Style: diary, fiction, poem, factual article, story about your life - no restriction
Winner: to be decided by Editorial Team of Jump! Mag me in my pjs most actually
Anything else?
most actually?
I changed tack half way through that sentence.
Piste could have written your mail except my dd is in Scottish hills, beautiful weather for once
I am sure she will be interested
Ah, you are on it, I think a guide is good, just helps them but also you in managing this.
Excellent. Thank you. I will share the information with them.
To give them an idea of what to write, they can have a read of the Written By You section.
Any format is fine, I don't like restricting young writers. It stifles their creativity.
I think booktokens would be great, mmeL
I will look into booktokens, Tee. It would be great to offer a really cool prize but unless I can find a corporate sponsor, it will have to be something I can afford.
Closing date is Thurs?
My two girls both get Jump! and let their brother read it.
My dd is most miffed that she's too old at 16. Fantastic idea.
Whitecherry- boys are, as far as I know, not denied access to education anywhere in the world on gender alone.
I'm trying to think of whom to approach for corporate sponsorship...actually, MN would be perfect.
That is brilliant, Madwoman.
I think we probably have a few male readers - my husband likes to read it too
It is great to hear that so many of you have DC who are reading. I can see that people are reading, but don't know who it is.
Please would you encourage your DC to leave a comment if they like the article, particularly on ones written by girls. It is so encouraging for them. All comments are moderated, so that nothing goes online without me checking they haven't given away too much detail.
Is anyone going to admit to being the Mum of Beatrice - who commented on this article. It made me laugh so much
Seeker
If your DD would like to contribute, she can - but I had to put a cut of point for the competition.
For anyone who is reading - we are always looking for contributors, whether girls or grown ups. Criteria - anything as long as it is interesting and non-fluffy.
Updated with the rules of the competition.
The bit about the Editorial Team is making us all giggle. I think that DD is the Deputy Editor, and DS is Editor for Boys. We also have the cutest Editor for Dogs and Other Furry Friends in Daphne.
First entry already arrived!
And number two right after it.
Am slightly concerned that this might be bigger than I anticipated.
Victim of your own success...
Hope so, Tee.
I am always so impressed by the articles we get sent by these girls. And it reminds me that we constantly underestimate them. We need to listen more.
Now that this thread is no longer in Chat because of some meanie who reported it to MNHQ it is not being read as often. People just don't go into this topic much.
I am flying to Germany today, so won't be around much to bump it, but if you could help to keep it in Active Convos, that would be great.
Getting a lot of interest so far.
I'm afraid you're going to have even more once our bright kids hear about it!!
Looking forward to their articles, Funny.
I've just realised that I'm travelling on Thursday and at the Frankfurt book fair on Friday so I may be burning the midnight oil on Thursday to read the articles. I have a 2 hour train journey on Friday so can read them then if need be.
I've nothing planned mon - wed so it would very much help if most of the articles came through before Thurs.
My daughter isn't Beatrice!
Great idea!
Shameless bump.
MmeLindor - I'd be happy to chip in a £10 book token as a prize.
Pistey
Am determined to find out who Beatrice's mum is
Keema
That's so kind. I'm going to ask around and see if a company might donate a couple of prizes.
Airport bump
I've just sent in my dd's feminist diatribe - I'm not sure it's what you were after, but I didn't think I should edit her!
Yessir
If you ever get fed up of your DD, I'd like to adopt her. I loved her feminist rant.
We now have 4 entries, all so good that choosing a winner is going to be tricky.
Brace yourself, my 9 year old has been furiously musing...
Can I claim editorial powers, or do I have to put up with all her lies fictional tales?
Great idea to publicise a great cause.
Gussie
No editing, please. We won't believe all she tells us not at all, no
If you have a young writer, and live in the Falmouth area, then this may be interesting to you
Barrington Green
They offer writers workshops for children (and adults). You may have heard of Emily Barr - she is one of the founders of Barrington Green.
She also started a writers's workshop in the local school - which I am thinking about doing too.
I'll show this to my DD. I had no idea about the magazine either.
I am nothing to do with Beatrice BTW.
Rips
Glad that you have found Jump! Mag. Hope your DD enjoys it.
Still no one willing to admit to being Beatrice's mum...
Remember Judy Blume? She has some great tips to get girls writing here.
evening bump
This is a great story - teen writer lands publishing deal after writing about One Direction
here
last bump
I have mentioned it to my three DDs - one in each of your age groups! The middle one is half way through her article already!
MmeLindor - would you like me to put a link to Jump on my shiny new website.
It is for English teachers mainly and I'm putting together a list of writing competitions and other places where pupils could submit work to. Have a look and see what you think. www.thewidewideworld.co.uk
That is great, Themumsnot (love your user name btw). Am looking forward to receiving them
Thewidewideworld
(almost shortened that to thewidewide then realised it looked a bit rude!)
Yes, please. That would be great.
If you could all share the link far and wide, so that we get as many entries as possible.
mmeLindor - I don't think you need to adopt her, if you cut her down the middle it would say 'This child's opinions belong to Mumsnet'.
YesSir
Funny to think that our DC are all first generation MN kids, and likely influenced by our MNetting.
What time is the deadline?!!
No deadline, Pistey. Tomorrow is International Day of the Girl, so I will wait until Friday to decide on the winners.
So really, even if I don't get the entry till tomorrow evening, they will still be included in the competition.
Which actually means that the deadline is tomorrow, I guess.
I mean that there is no rush to have the entry arrive this morning.
Am looking forward to reading these! Hers will arrive with you this evening/afternoon.
Have you received entries from the different age groups? I think that will be interesting, to see how ideas change.
Great idea. DDs are only little so we have to wait a few years. Will pm you re corporate sponsor if I can work an idea I have out
Just noticed the dates! Sponsor for next time then...
Message deleted by Mumsnet for breaking our Talk Guidelines. Replies may also be deleted.
That is great, Pistey. Will look forward to receiving it. Yes, i have entries from all age groups.
SkiBumMum
No worries, but thanks for thinking of us. Please feel free to email with suggestions though. ;)
Maria
That looks great - will have a proper look at your website later. From a quick glance it looks like it would be suitable for the over 16yo age group only, but will get in touch.
Maria
Have emailed you.
Whoops. No I haven't. The email bounced.
Will PM you instead.
This is WordeBite if anyone is interested.
dd1's sent hers by e-mail
dd2's not got round to it yet ! (This is pretty typical in our house)
<Still waiting for the emoticon that rolls its eyes>
Thanks Backforgood - did she send it today?
I could do with a <rolls eyes> emoticon too
bump
Damn, wish I had seen this sooner, my 10yr old would love this + as I've got her home ill, I would love her doing it too, something productive to occupy her - will try + get her onto it tomorrow, but not sure if she can manage it in time, can give it a go though
Rockin
Will not be judging till Fri so if she gets it finished tomorrow, she can still take part.
And for anyone who has truly missed it - we are always looking for more contributors so get your DD's writing about other topics.
And over 16yos - or even adults.
Sounds great, will definitely try for later tomorrow
Yes - she sent it this evening about the same time as I was posting on here earlier.
Oh! I've just opened my e-mails and it's come back "Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently"
I've just tried again. Fingers crossed.
Got it that time, BFG
And received the entry from Pistey's DD
Oh good, I'm SO glad, she didn't really have very much time on it in the end, so it was less well structured than would have been ideal, she was planning to do research, and sorry, she didn't even do a word count.
No worries, it is great.
While I have your attention, can I point you all towards my other project for Day of the Girl
TeamMumsnet Catapult - by women for women
And the TeamMumsnet Catapult page
She's done it - bless her, even though she's ill she's worked really hard on it
but I'm now being totally crap & can't see how to send it - i there an email address or is it by PM??
Ignore my last post, I found it & have now (hopefully) sent it, please let me know if you don't get it.
I might just get lynched if I haven't sent it correctly
I think I received it. I emailed back
You did, thanks. - I only read it myself later as she was been very secretive with it before it was sent, it was quite an eye opener to her views + how much she understands, scary too
ha. I think there will be a few surprised mums.
So - from when will we be able to read the Mumsneters' dds' version?
Sorry guys. Intention was to work on the train. Who knew that the Internet connection in the middle of Germany would be so useless?
I'll have to postpone judging till Sunday when I get back to civilisation.
If anyone still wants to enter, I'll extend the deadline to Sunday.
We have prizes!
The wonderful women at Tara Books have agreed to donate three copies of their book 'The Book Book'
hope you can see this
Trying to link to their website but Internet is so slow.
Tara Books
Go look at their books. Feminist books for girls! I was like a child in a sweetie shop.
Anyone want to join in? Deadline extended till Sunday.
Excellent, thanks.
dd2 has now written something, but it's on paper, so we'll need to get it typed up and over to you tomorrow.
I wish I'd seen this before. My kids are all in their 20s so don't qualify to enter.
Haven't read whole thread but I wonder if there is a way that some of us could support the project by contributing to a prize fund?
I would be more than happy to donate £20, I think it's wonderful, along with other projects that you're involved with/instigate MmeLindor.
Sorry if this is too late for this time, but bear it in mind for next.
If this is in any way inappropriate, I apologise, have posted without thinking through as deadline is imminent.
B4G
Great. Look forward to receiving another entry.
Bewitched
That is really lovely of you, and not at all inappropriate. The wonderful women at Tarabooks have agreed to donate prizes, so it is not necessary.
It would be great if you could all have a wee look at Tara Books to thank them for their support. They have wonderful books with truly stunning illustrations. Really worth a look.
Mme, have had a quick look, really interesting, will revisit and order.
Massive admiration for you, I will try to catch your projects early enough to help in future.
Looks great! DD and I sorry that she missed the deadline. I have "liked" you on facebook so hope to hear about the next event.
Thanks Bewitched.
Saffron
I think we will do another competition because this one was really well received.
We also have a pile of books needing reviewed, so will be doing something in the near future about that.
The Winners
Thank you all for allowing your daughters to take part. I am looking forward to sharing the fantastic articles that they wrote - and hearing what you all think of them.
One thing I will say - we don't have to worry about the future of the feminist movement in UK
Thank you, mine is chuffed to bits & looking forward to seeing her piece in your mag, she's even talking about writing more, so you might well have started something
That is brilliant, Rock.
I confess that I don't know which MNetter's DD won because I deliberately didn't look at names when I was judging so that I wouldn't be influenced by liking the mum.
I will send out the prizes when I get them - should be end of this week - and I will be back in Scotland on Monday so will send the books out then.
oh, and if any of the girls wish to review books or products, please contact me because we shall be looking for more reviews in the coming months.
Thats sounds like a good idea, much better to be impartial
Mines the scary drop kicking 10yr old
[proud]
Mines an avid reader & reads above her age & always has an opinion, so I'm sure she'd enjoy reviewing books, so you are welcome to add her to your list for that too if you want.
do you need an address for the book prize or is it e-book??
Yes, will need address - if you could PM me (or email)
Will be looking for companies in the coming months so will let you know when we have something to review.
Winner in 11 to 13 yo category is CAITIE
I have noticed that not many readers are clicking on the <3 next to the title to say that they liked the article - possibly cause the function is not well known enough. It really gives the girls a boost when someone <likes> their article, so if you would let your girls know about this, that would be great.
Also encourage them to write a comment - all comments are moderated to ensure that they don't give away any personal details (like my mum who left her real name on there!) so you can feel secure about allowing them to add a comment.
I hadn't spotted that function myself, so thank you - shame really as I passed my Daughters article onto her school, so I know its been seen by a lot too - I was told this morning its given the teachers a really lift & they love the mag
That is great to hear, Rock. I am glad they like it.
Btw, I'll be posting the other articles in the coming weeks. I normally post every 2 days.
Changed the format a bit today - what do you think?
Our final winner is Amelia - in the 14 to 16 years age group.
Please read and click on the little <3 to say that you liked her article
Sorry that I haven't posted any more of the articles, I have had a tummy bug - I didn't even open the laptop for 3 days .. don't know when the last time I had a PC free 24 hours, never mind 3 days! Am catching up with all that I have missed while I have been in bed.
I will be posting the girls' articles in the coming days, and the prizes will go out tomorrow. Thanks for your patience.
Zara was the youngest contributor, at just six years old. She has written a great article on being a girl - I love her humour.
I will email the winners to get addresses today, and send the prizes off tomorrow.
Nicola wrote a great article on her Scout Camp - would have loved to have seen the kids when Bear Grylls arrived (not to mention the leaders!)
Libby's role model isn't an actor or a singer, but a scientist.
Don't forget to comment and to click on the little heart to <like> the articles!
I love this article from Polly, who is 9 years old
Don't forget to click on the little heart to <like> Polly's article, and if you have time, please leave a comment as the girls do come back and check to see if someone has commented.
