Make a difference in LIFE
Help plan Life Study - new research about babies and families
October to December 2013

We are looking for mums of 6 month and 12 month old babies, to take part in a pilot research study
at University College London Hospital (UCLH). If this isn’t you but you know someone who might be interested, please pass on this information.
If you would like to find out more about how you can help us in planning this important research,
please contact our research team on freephone 0800 652 3751 or email lifestudy@natcen.ac.uk.

What are we doing and why?

From October to December 2013 we are doing some important work to plan for Life Study, a new
research study that will involve families across the UK, beginning in 2014. The aim of Life Study is to
collect information to help us understand how what happens early in life shapes children’s health,
development and wellbeing as they grow.

There are many things we would like to understand about how babies grow and develop and what it
means for their futures. For example, why are illnesses like asthma, eczema and food allergies so
common? How can we make sure our children are really ready for school when the time comes?
How do families and communities affect children’s lives?

We will involve families from all different backgrounds, communities and cultures so that we can
understand how to give all children the best possible start in life.

Before we start the main part of the study in 2014, we need to try out some of the questions and
processes involved so we can get them right. We call this a pilot study. This is where you and your
family come in. By working with us to make sure we are fully prepared for the main study, you and your family will be making a real difference in the lives of children and families now and in the future.

I think I would need a bit more information about what my involvement/commitment would be, both on an immediate basis and long term duration sorry

Hi Patilla,

Thanks so much for getting in touch.

If you agree to participate, the research team would ask you to come along to University College Hospital in London for a single appointment at a time that is convenient. The appointment would last for about 2 - 3 hours we think. We can't be sure of the length as yet as this is something we are testing out.

At the appointment, you would be asked some questions by an interviewer, fill in some surveys on a computer and you and baby would have some measures taken. These are things we are testing out to get the study design right for the main phase.

If this sounds interesting and you think you may like to help us plan this important research, please get in touch with our research team on freephone 0800 652 3751 or email lifestudy@natcen.ac.uk.

Best wishes
The Life Study team
