MEDIA: Dr. Caspar Addyman, Birkbeck Baby Tue 11-Dec-12 19:06:29

Researchers at Birkbeck’s world famous Babylab are conducting the first ever global survey of baby laughter. We’d love to hear from you.

Babies use laughter and smiles to express happiness, to communicate without words and in response to surprising events. Studying what makes babies laugh can tell scientists a lot about how their brains are developing and what they know about the world.

How can you help?

If your child is under 2 ½ years old you can help us with our research
1. Fill in our online survey.
2. Submit ‘field reports’ about events your baby finds funny.
3. Send us videos of your baby laughing.

Find out more at BabyLaughter.net

Please tell all your friends. We want to hear from as many parents as possible.

Thank you,
Dr. Caspar Addyman

I've met Dr Caspar as my DS is signed up to the Birkbeck Babylab - every couple of months or so we get a request to come in and take part in a study on cognitive development. It's fab we get a nice cup of tea and I get to feel virtuous about going into town for the day! DS loves it!

So a big yeah to his study!!

I've actually spent the last few days purposely trying to make DD2 laugh just so I have things to write in the survey. God it's such fun! I'd recommend it to anyone as a way to pass a rainy afternoon.

Oh BTW the question re distance from London, I am in Norwich so less than 100miles easy on the train but I have no idea how far it is in km so I guessed and may have got it totally wrong!

Thank you everyone who has filled in the survey already. If you have any questions about laughing babies or anecdotes to share with everyone, please post them up here. :D

If you'd like to know a little bit more about the project, yesterday I did an interview with Richard Bacon on Radio Five Live. You can find a link to it here:

I haven't done it yet but marking my place for when I'm on the pc.

When's the deadline?

CasparAddyman Sun 20-Jan-13 14:22:33

The site will stay up indefinitely but I will start analysing the data and publish the findings when i have 500 participants. I have about 400 so far so hurry if you and your baby want to be in scientific paper :D

i would like to point out that being British, i haven't got a friffing clue how many kilometres away from London i live - i know how many miles away...

nickelbabe Tue 22-Jan-13 12:47:16

Bumping as I noticed that Caspar Addyman is doing a talk about this if you're within a small number of kilometres miles from Euston.
