An online study looking at posttraumatic growth in women who have left abusive intimate-partner relationships
Intimate-partner violence is a pertinent issue affecting women around the globe. The majority of research has almost exclusively focused on the immediate to medium term, negative consequences associated with intimate-partner violence. Few studies have looked at womens psychological wellbeing after leaving a violent relationship or considered the full potential range of trauma sequelae.
Over the last decade, an emerging body of literature suggests that after a traumatic event people can experience potential positive psychological changes, such as increased personal strength, appreciation of life, spirituality and closer relationships with others. At the present time relatively little is known about psychological growth in female survivors of intimate-partner violence.
The present study aims investigate the longer term well-being of female survivors who have left violent intimate-partner relationships. It intends to explore the influence of feelings of shame and ways of coping on the development of growth after experiencing intimate-partner violence.
It is hoped that by studying the concept of growth in female survivors knowledge will be gained that can help promote recovery in those whose lives have been affected by such experiences.
