To start, I will say that this is not a commercial endeavour. I am not earning any money from this, and am spending my free time - and likely my own money for prizes unless I can blag them from a company - doing this.
If anyone is upset by this, then feel free to report to MNHQ you big meanie
Ok, that out of the way.
Did you know that this Thurs is the first International Day of the Girl?
Plan has been lobbying the UN for years about this. The idea is to draw attention to the 75 million girls around the world who have no access to education
I wanted to do something for the pre-teen online magazine that I run (non-profit, all done by myself and volunteer writers, many of them girls).
So I have come up with this.
A writing competition for girls under 16y
Topic: What does being a girl mean to you?
There will be three prizes, for the age groups
- under 10yo
- 11 - 13yo
- 14 - 16yo
Prizes to be determined.
If you are interested, check out Jump! Mag for details on how to enter, or PM me
Damn, wish I had seen this sooner, my 10yr old would love this + as I've got her home ill, I would love her doing it too, something productive to occupy her - will try + get her onto it tomorrow, but not sure if she can manage it in time, can give it a go though
Rockin
Will not be judging till Fri so if she gets it finished tomorrow, she can still take part.
And for anyone who has truly missed it - we are always looking for more contributors so get your DD's writing about other topics.
And over 16yos - or even adults.
Sounds great, will definitely try for later tomorrow

Oh! I've just opened my e-mails and it's come back "Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently"
I've just tried again. Fingers crossed.
Got it that time, BFG
And received the entry from Pistey's DD

Oh good, I'm SO glad, she didn't really have very much time on it in the end, so it was less well structured than would have been ideal, she was planning to do research, and sorry, she didn't even do a word count.
She's done it - bless her, even though she's ill she's worked really hard on it
but I'm now being totally crap & can't see how to send it - i there an email address or is it by PM??
Ignore my last post, I found it & have now (hopefully) sent it, please let me know if you don't get it.
I might just get lynched if I haven't sent it correctly
I think I received it. I emailed back
You did, thanks. - I only read it myself later as she was been very secretive with it before it was sent, it was quite an eye opener to her views + how much she understands, scary too
ha. I think there will be a few surprised mums.

So - from when will we be able to read the Mumsneters' dds' version?
Sorry guys. Intention was to work on the train. Who knew that the Internet connection in the middle of Germany would be so useless?
I'll have to postpone judging till Sunday when I get back to civilisation.
If anyone still wants to enter, I'll extend the deadline to Sunday.
We have prizes!
The wonderful women at Tara Books have agreed to donate three copies of their book 'The Book Book'
hope you can see this
Trying to link to their website but Internet is so slow.
Tara Books
Go look at their books. Feminist books for girls! I was like a child in a sweetie shop.
Anyone want to join in? Deadline extended till Sunday.

Excellent, thanks.
dd2 has now written something, but it's on paper, so we'll need to get it typed up and over to you tomorrow.

I wish I'd seen this before. My kids are all in their 20s so don't qualify to enter.
Haven't read whole thread but I wonder if there is a way that some of us could support the project by contributing to a prize fund?
I would be more than happy to donate £20, I think it's wonderful, along with other projects that you're involved with/instigate MmeLindor.
Sorry if this is too late for this time, but bear it in mind for next.
If this is in any way inappropriate, I apologise, have posted without thinking through as deadline is imminent.

Great. Look forward to receiving another entry.

That is really lovely of you, and not at all inappropriate. The wonderful women at Tarabooks have agreed to donate prizes, so it is not necessary.
It would be great if you could all have a wee look at Tara Books to thank them for their support. They have wonderful books with truly stunning illustrations. Really worth a look.

Mme, have had a quick look, really interesting, will revisit and order.
Massive admiration for you, I will try to catch your projects early enough to help in future.
Looks great! DD and I sorry that she missed the deadline. I have "liked" you on facebook so hope to hear about the next event.
Thanks Bewitched.

I think we will do another competition because this one was really well received.
We also have a pile of books needing reviewed, so will be doing something in the near future about that.
The Winners
Thank you all for allowing your daughters to take part. I am looking forward to sharing the fantastic articles that they wrote - and hearing what you all think of them.
One thing I will say - we don't have to worry about the future of the feminist movement in UK
