Week 2 - Autumn Low Carb Bootcamp

Well! It's the first day of reckoning:

Here is the Spreadsheet of Wonderfulness

I am waving my big stick around already, because it's obvious from the most recent threads that there has been a fair amount of cheating going on.

And we have only just finished week one!

A couple of things:


This period is designed to shift you quickly into becoming ketogenically adapted, i.e. to shift your body into burning fat rather than burning carbs.

This can only happen if you consistently reduce the carbs that you are consuming

If you cheat - even if it is just the odd thing here and there - then this won't happen, and it will take you much longer to start burning (and therefore losing) fat.

These two weeks were never going to be easy. And although I wrote about them, and how you needed to plan for them, it's clear that this hasn't always been appreciated.

I do, really, understand that it is hard. Especially if low carbing is new for you. But it's designed with a purpose, and you will really see the benefit of it if you stick with it.


Please be mindful of people who are new to Bootcamp. You may know what you can/can't do in terms of carb consumption. But there has been quite a bit of posting about cheating. Even if you are doing this mindfully, please remember that you aren't supposed to be doing this in the first two weeks of Bootcamp, and it makes it really hard for those who are new to low carbing, and who might be struggling.

A bit of sensitivity is called for here.

And finally, when you get on the scales this morning/tomorrow morning, please remember that this is about you and nobody else. It isn't a competition. Some people lose weight much quicker than others.

If you have a lot of weight to lose, chances are that you will lose it quicker than if you are closer to your target. Some people will lose a shedload in week one, but then nothing in week two - whereas others will lose more modestly, but consistently, week after week. The only thing that matters is what is happening to you.

If you haven't lost much, please don't be disappointed. Make sure that you are genuinely following the rules - are you drinking enough water? Are you eating high fat? That one glass or wine, or that small piece of cake - they all add up.

And even if you have genuinely followed the rules - if you haven't seen the scales move by much - have you measured?

We are all different, and rates of loss will be different too. Just think about the food that you have been eating, and consider how this WOE compares with low calorie or low fat diets.

Changing to a low carb way of eating as compared to a low fat or low calorie diet is not an easy transition, and it is to be expected that there will be snags along the way. Hopefully the Bootcamp threads will give you the help and guidance that you need - and I hope that when you get on the scales next, your hard work will be rewarded!

Weigh yourself first thing in the morning, naked, and after you have been to the loo

If you weigh yourself later on in the day, all that you are doing is weighing yourself and everything that you have eaten and drunk.

My Dh has just weighed in and has lost 10lbs. I am very slightly jealous but he has pointed out that a) he has more to lose (was well over 17st) and b) he normally drinks loads more than I do and has had none this week.

I've updated the spreasdsheet and have lost nearly 2 pounds, which is less than I was expecting, especially as I have been exercising everyday and been very strict with bootcamp. I think I will up my water-I'm hoping because I had my period last week, its more water retention than anything.

I do feel lighter though, which is good!

first week over and it wasn't so bad, although Dh is quite bemused by my not having winesmile the dc haven't noticed at all, as I serve them first at the table and they tuck in and dont notice i skip the spuds. just cook less lovely roast potatoes etc as then I am not tempted to have any, and there are no left overs to nibble at.

when does the uber bootcamp start? I am going to do that this timesmile bit nervous about it, but its only 3 days, is that right?smile

A bit gutted. 1lb off this week but I only gave up diet coke for the last 3 days of that feels like longer

I haven't cheated on the food. I was having flaxseed muffins at breakfast but was told flax can stall weight loss so haven't had them for 4 days.

I have been drinking a LOT of water over the last few days so kind of hoping that's why the loss isnt more and I will get a whoosh of weight loss in the next couple of weeks. Only 3 weeks until my holiday and I want to get 4.4lb off by then to reach my holiday goal weight. After that I will still have a stone to lose but being realistic about the holiday goal. I do feel slimmer though so that's good

4lbs off grin hooray. So that's 8lb over 3 weeks & I'm still adjusting. In the last week I learned that I need to eat more fat and add salt.

I've lost 1lb.

I was a bit disappointed, but I had two glasses of wine, almonds until I realised they were only for veggies, and possibly not enough water and too much caffeine. I am taking this as good lessons learned and aiming for a perfect week!

Even so - I've had the most delicious week's food, Brie omelettes, roast chicken where I ate all the skin etc and I still lost a pound! Not a bad way of living!

OMG!!!! I have just stepped on the scales and lost....8lb!!!!! shock shock grin grin I know, I know it's probably mostly water but it's certainly motivating! grin

So lesson for this week is I think I still need to eat more in general, lunchtimes are my biggest issue mainly due to poor planning, but I'm off to the supermarket this morning so will stock up on things to make a few batches of soup I think. Also I need to cut down on the tea. That's my biggest struggle.

I've lost 5lbs which I'm really pleased about. I can't keep up with the thread (just started working again this week- struggling for time) but it really helps having the support and knowing others are doing this! Thank you for the guidance BIWI! Let's hope I can keep it going for another week!

2lb off which I am delighted with. smileI don't have much to lose and at the start struggled to get my head around eating so much fat - I wasn't convinced it would work for me.

My skin is better than it's ever been too.

Preparation is the key - I have made sure I take lunch to work with me every day and have a fridge full of the right foods.

Sainsburys sell little packs of dry olives which are handy to carry around as snacks (though I've only needed them once).

Oh bother, meant to weigh this morning but i have just remembered and i have already drunk 1 ltr of water and eaten a BAB. So will have to weight tomo.

Oh and the consensus is contact lens weigh less then glasses, just to help shift those extra pounds like wink

Really pleased to have lost 3lb despite eating a bit of apple crumble on Saturday (felt obliged). Have stuck to it apart from that though and not finding it too hard. Spurring me on to keep going with it. I have also had to tighten the belt on my work trousers by a hole!

No loss for me as BIWI predicted as I'm on my third week, however I have lost 5cm from my waist and 6cm around my tummy this week smile

My only, solitary complaint so far is that my hair is too silky! I kind of relied on the thatch effect to give it some volume, so now it's kind of smooth and glossy & sits too close to my head. I'll live grin

I had a lovely time yesterday predicting my future losses. I allowed for a probably very pessimistic rate of slow down & a few potential stalls. I found this to be useful when I successfully (in the shortish term) did ww years ago. Looking at my calendar and seeing that I was behind where I'd predicted gave me a kick up the bum. Seeing I was ahead gave me a buzz.

Anyway, I calculate that I could have a total of 2st off by Christmas & another 2 1/2 st off by next July. I'm trying to be realistic. If I got to that, I'd be the lightest in adult life and the thought thrills me that I could buy some lovely size 10 jeans on my birthday next year.

I feel so confident and positive that I can do this as I'm just not feeling deprived at all.

<happy sigh> uncommon for me on a rainy Monday.

Yes 3.75lbs off. Very pleased. Went to the cinema last night and just had an americano instead of half a giant popcorn and half a huge Pepsi max and you know what it was fine. I didn't feel deprived and didn't come home on a sugar low with kernels in my cleavage. smile

Two pounds off - well one really because I gained a pound just before the start of Bootcamp. I've been LCing for 12 weeks though so I won't be losing any water weight at this point. More importantly though - one inch off my waist, I'm going to have to put another hole in my belt. grin grin

Charlie - willie cleverly does that bit I think. You just enter your weekly weight.

Well I weighed (after a pee and a poo! - sorry if TMI). 7lbs off! Very very very pleased. I have never lost that in one week before. But I did stick to it completely. No cheats planned or otherwise. No alcohol. Possibly not enough water and def too much tea so that is challenge for this week.

So that is August's damage gone. Now for July's holiday damage!

Those who struggled last week - it does work. But you can't cheat. It is an unforgiving way of eating and the odd glass of wine or piece of cake might not derail you on other diets but definitely will on this. Bootcamp is only two weeks but it is a tough two weeks. Hence the name bootcamp! Plan, plan, plan. It def helps. Check out the recipe thread. Eat enough food. Eat enough fat. Drink the water. And then drink some more water!

I'll get off my soapbox now! smile

Oh - for those who struggle with lunches - most supermarkets do pots of sandwich fillers - I try to have a pot of egg mayonnaise and a cheese one in the fridge. I find them useful for a quick lunch or breakfast. They are nice spread on slices of ham or beef or turkey and rolled up. I have a lot of salads but vary what goes in. Always a huge pile of leaves, a few chopped cherry toms, chopped cucumber. Then sometime chicken, avocado, chopped grilled peppers in oil from the deli section.. Then I add some Delouis mayonnaise which I add olive oil to and shake well to make a runnier dressing. Or smoked salmon bits or mackerel or tuna with wasabi mayonnaise. Or an old fashioned "Chef's salad" with chopped ham and hard boiled eggs. I also love the little cherry peppers stuffed with ricotta that I know both Sainsburys and M&S do. They are spicy though! I sometimes have three of those with my salad as I find they make it really tasty.

A bit tmi but since I stopped eating flaxseed muffins I haven't been to the loo. I have always had this problem and I was wondering would it be ok to take flaxseed oil capsules or peppermint oil capsules to help me go? I don't want to take them unless I have to but I think I'm getting to a point where I may need to and I don't really want to take laxatives.

Feeling more energetic, way less dull and sluggish (not withstanding the hell that was Sunday morning)
Lost over 3lbs so that's good too, although fitting into a skirt tht was tight last week was even better.

Purple - this WOE does mean that there is less 'waste' to be got rid off, IYSWIM, (a piece of cheese will leave nothing whereas a slice of wholemeal bread will leave lots ...) so there are often stories of being 'constipated' when in fact it is only that you don't have so much bulking your bowel out (!) - i went from daily, to about 2-3 times a week blush. If it really is a problem (ie you are bloated, it's hard to 'go' and you are straining,) then physalis husks (health shops) are often recommended on here - but usually if you are eating (lubricating) fat and drinking loads, you are 'within normal parametres' by only going every few days.

Have managed to get through week without slipping once (except for 1 glass prosecco to celebrate DD new job). Looks like it paid off. I've definitely toned up as well. I've been combining the WOE with exercise (this is VERY unusual for me!), so every day I do something, be it walking (I'm doing Joanna Hall Walkactive), cycling, zumba, whatever. But the rule is I have to do something everyday.

Ewan thanks for that spinach pie recipe. That looks a winner and would be good cold in a lunch box too.

Auntie Maggie why don't you try tofu for your lunches, if you don't like steak or tuna. You need to buy firm tofu from an Asian supermarket, but if you get the firm variety, you can slice it, dust it in various spices, and fry it till it browns on both sides. Let cool, then put a slice in your lunchbox with some salad veg and a splash of soy sauce or chilli sauce. It's very low carb and tasty. Tofu is not just some weird meat substitute for vegetarians - it's delicious and versatile (am not employed by international tofu marketing agency!!)

Feeling very inspired to keep going.

I've lost 5llbs this week! Yay!
(NOTE: first week back on Bootcamp and I'm a lardy arse with around 2 stone to shift)
So that means I'm back to where I was at the end of the last Bootcamp (if only I'd kept going...)
Still, a good start and I'm determined to be strict this week – planning meals and trying really hard to drink enough water.
I think the physical craving to eat carbs has now passed (meaning I don't get drawn to that tempting, sugary smell of cakes/pastries) so I wasn't bothered about not having a slab of chocolate cake that DD baked last night). BUT eating when I'm bored or a bit emotional or fed up is a whole other matter... For example, I opened the fridge at around 10.30 last night thinking I could just eat a little something, even though I wasn't hungry... Gave myself a talking to and had a mug of herbal tea instead. What do the rest of you do if you get those sort of non-hungry late night cravings?

3lbs off for me, really pleased. Have also gone through food diary to suss out any carb creep an just to remind myself what delicious food I'm eating. Motivates me when I'm being contrary about not eating bread!

Today's food:

B: egg and ham muffin
L: tuna mayo with cucumber and lettuce
D: leftover beef stew with buttery cabbage mash and cabbage

4.5lb off here <does small dance on kitchen table> I am genuinely staggered as I've been low carbing for a year and don't have loads to lose, it just goes to show how much my carbs had crept up and how a strict week can really work even for old-timers.

Well done to all the losers whether it's pounds or inches, off to snarf some scrambled eggs and bacon.

Just weighed and I'm down by 2 pounds which I'm really pleased with. I've been low carbing for a year and a half now, dropping just over 3 stone but the dreaded carb creep has been taking it's toll and I hadn't lost anything for 4 months.

Just to echo what BIWI and Cider have already put so well...

If you are a carby twat, you will not lose the weight! grin
Once you are through your two weeks of strict bootcamp and your body has adjusted, the occasional treat probably won't cause too much damage to your weightloss, but during the first couple of weeks you need to reset your body and tastes. If you eat processed crap, you are putting yourself back to square one. Honestly, it isn't worth it.

Why would you make all this effort and then sabotage yourself?? confused you've got the rest of your life to eat cake/mars bars/minstrels/chips/pizza (some of the things I can recall listed in confession on the week 1 thread! grin), this is just two weeks out of your life, and then you're onto bootcamp light where you can have nuts, berries, wine etc. believe me, after two weeks, those strawberries and clotted cream will taste as sweet as the ambrosia of heaven. wink

Am 3lbs down. Very grateful as had off piste meals last Tuesday and Wednesday. At least this has allowed me 4 days of strict low carbing before weigh in today. But aware I probably would have lost a pound or 2 more if I had stuck to it all week. However for the first time am back at my lowest weight since the last bootcamp at start of July.

So thanks BIWI for doing this and newbies, don't cheat if you can help it, it isn't worth it!

I gave in to emotional eating last night. Having had a "good" day, I had 2 glasses of red wine followed by a small portion of plum pie & custard, and a bar of chocolate.

It was emotional eating, nothing more and nothing less. I must try and be a bit more forearmed against this type of thing! Back on the wagon today however.....

I have lost 3.6lbs this week and I'm pleased with that. I have been low carbing since the new year but with more and more carb creep towards then end of the summer but it hasn't really affected my weight much. So I'm back on the bootcamp properly (I really really missed my couple of glasses of wine on a sat eve tho'!)

I'm hoping to get to 2 stone off at the start next week (so close but so far...). I feel so much slimmer I put on a skirt this morning and it was massive (struggled to get in it last year) so I hit my 'too small' drawer... I put one of my old old skirts on and it was a bit on the big side grin grin grin.

Stick with it, it's good good feeling.

Firstly - Sorry BIWI for posting about cheating or rather failing over the last few days, I take your point about it being unhelpful to others.

Thank you all so much for all of your suggestions for my bowel issues smile I am making notes and am going to try them all! It's now getting close to a week again since going to the loo...... sad blush

daisy - the GP gives me senna, fybogel, and movicol (sp?) The fybogel makes me swell up and I find it sickly, movicol is vicious! And lactulose is loaded with sugar/sweeteners so I struggle to take it! Sorry to seem ungrateful, I'm not! Thank you daisy xxx

OK - I've not lost weight, I've added 3lbs but I think it's waste [bush]

Dropped 4" from my waist, Down 1 size to a 10 at the bottom.

Down 2 sizes to a 12 on top.

Dropped 2" from my back.

Dropped 2 " from my hips.

Really interesting piece here about fruit and fruit consumption - especially if you are a diabetic - some evidence that fruit can actually be helpful if you are a type 2 diabetic.

It's worth reading this all the way through. At the end, there's a table showing the fructose content of various fruits, which is really interesting.

what happens after bootcamp? Where do we go?

I'm a bit jealous of all you big losers! I have lost a pound, but I'm feeling slimmer (wish I'd measured). Also I seem to have got over the carb flu finally - woke up feeling much better this morning.
B: a whole avocado with olive oil dressing, a tomato, cup of chai (no milk)
L: curried cauliflower soup, tuna salad with mayo
D: Black Farmer sausages with broccoli

Does anyone else's dp/dh think they are a faddy weirdo for attempting this? Mine has no comprehension at all of struggling to lose weight or why anyone would need to do anything other than 'eat a bit less, exercise a bit more'.

I echo what crabbysmallbottom said. You really need to stick to this at the start. I lost 7 pounds in the first few weeks of the last bootcamp. I then had one day way off piste. It was a special occasion. I put 7lbs back on overnight. It came off again over the next week or so but that was a bit of a shock. After doing this for several months an away does not have the same effect. The difference now is I only eat carbs that are really worth it. If you have just started do keep at it. It definitely works and it gets easier.

Googoogoggles I have stone in olives (£1 jar from Tesco - nothing fancy) for evening snacking. There's no way you can eat loads of them quickly because of the stones so you just eat what you need.

I've lost about 2lbs which is pretty good, 6lbs in 2 weeks. Was hoping for a bit more but c'est la vie! I'm not going to panic about it, or wallow and allow it to throw me off track.

Haven't cheated <proud> other than 2 or three coffees with milk instead of cream.

I did my 12 hour drive to DS's uni and back yesterday - and I did not eat a single sweet thing!!! And I am by nature a sugary twat!!!!grin grin grin grin I have lost 3lbs since Monday and probably more but I suffer from the same affliction as Mouseface and haven't been for a week!sad Anyone got a stick of dynamite?

So far I am holding strong against emotional eating. Not sure quite how, but I have. Going to have a quick scrambled eggs before the school run as I feel really hungry. Not sure if real hunger or quite what but I have made the mistake of not eating when hungry and that way disaster lies.

1.6 off here. Not hugely impressive compared with the excellent losses most others have had but I'm happy enough. I think being veggie makes it harder to keep the carbs low. Feeling hugely bloated today, which is odd and I think adversely affected my weigh in.

I have been feeling not wholly committed to the plan. I love not feeling hungry but I'm finding it tough going not being able to just say 'fuck it, it's pasta tonight'. But I realised today it's only 10 weeks. Well, 9 now. And I can manage that.

Off to Bath tomorrow for the night with 2 friends. First night ever away from the children - they're 8 & 6! I shall do my very best to stay on plan.

Doing something with chicken tonight, not sure what. Did I read something recently about parmesan chicken soaked in buttermilk? And can anyone inspire me what to do with it? I have spinach, aubergine, peppers, mushrooms and a turnip.

Possibly some sort of parmagiana affair? Have got mozzarella balls in the fridge and any amount of cheese.

Thanks for tip re olives with stones stuntnun - will have to try that! I did some cheese crisps with cheddar a couple of nights ago for a snack but they were awful – way too greasy. Maybe I didn't leave them in long enough?
Am just frying up some chicken strips in loads of butter for dinner and have made a coleslaw (mostly cabbage with 1/4 shallot a tiny bit of grated carrot) – who knew I could get so excited about the prospect of a bit of chicken and coleslaw but there you go, I am.
First day feeling like I had more energy today –and a much brighter mood. (Don't think I'll ever have sleek and shiny hair again though – too many years of hiding the grey bits!)
Kept refilling a 750 ml bottle of water today with the aim of drinking x4 minimum a day. (It's got one of those squeezy tops which DOES help, strangely, as someone has already reported)
Black get back up on the wagon _ you pulled me up a few times last BC (hv name-changed)
Keep going everyone!

Iblame and Mouse I think it's absolutely fine to say when you're finding things difficult and when you've fallen off the wagon - that way we can beat you with the big stick support you and haul you back aboard.

I think what BIWI maybe meant was for those of us who've been doing low carb for quite a while, this isn't the time to post about going off-piste and eating stuff that isn't allowed on bootcamp - after you've been doing it a while you get a good idea of what you can and can't have without causing a stall/gain, but for the people who are just starting now/restarting after a long gap, it's really important not to cheat at all in these early days. It's pretty hard to stick to bootcamp for those two weeks, and thinking that you can go a bit off-road and still lose weight is going to end in frustration and disappointment for most people.

Correct me if I'm wrong BIWI! grin

Beryl 'twas me that posted the turkey marinaded in buttermilk, coated with Parmesan 'breadcrumbs' and fried in butter. It was delish. DH was chided about buying turkey but in his defence it was very cheap.

I fell off the wagon bigstyle today after a disastrous day that I'm still not sure how I'm going to get through the rest of. At least I have six days before my next weighing so I'll drink lots of water and clamber back on the wagon.

Some amazing losses here and very well done too timid for moving down the clothes sizes - great when that happens. I really want this to happen to me soon as have been same size for ages - first it was tight, then ok, now loose. Fingers crossed next week or the week after will be a week of putting falling down loose jeans to the back of a drawer and bringing out some tight ones I have only wore once in 2010, after losing weight and then getting ill, dropping my weight temporarily for an all too brief month!

B: 2 poached eggs mixed in a cup with butter, salt & pepper.

L: None, had to come home at lunchtime to fix the toilet that my cleaner had inexplicably broken (pretty proud of my plumbing skills)

D: It started off as chicken soaked in buttermilk, to be coated with parmesan and fried, but it was too faffy, so I added chopped fresh parsley and threw the remainder of the chicken, buttermilk and parmesan into the pan en masse, fried it off, then added half a rather elderly jar of tomato type stuff. Added the (also elderly) mozzarella balls to melt over it, and served on a bed of homegrown rocket and basil. It turned out rather well considering.

BIWI thanks for putting the boot into bootcamp. We all need it. I have a formal to go to in precisely 12 days and haven't a clue what I am going to wear.

ds prevent me from snacking as we have been sorting his stuff out. I am now too tired to be bothered to pick and am going to collapse into bed for an early night. Sleep for me is key to not giving into emotional eating. Less I sleep harder it is to resist.

B: bacon, mushrooms and fried eggs
L: tuna and cheese melt over cauliflower
T: "Mince" and cheese (mince had mushrooms and leeks added)
s: scrambled eggs

I am going to ignore the fact it was dairy heavy and go with the sticking to plan. Aiming to include more veg tomo.

Those who haven't dont despair - remember everyone whooshes at different times. I would take a look though and make sure you haven't cheated somewhere or hidden carbs in some packet foods.

I have lost 3.5 lbs this week, which is my best loss since my first week, back in July. I have made more of an effort to stick to the bootcamp rules and upped my water intake as I hadn't really bothered with it before. I guess it really does do something! (proffers wrist for slapping)

Can't really decide what my goal weight is though, would like not to have a wodge of tummy fat mostly but no idea if this is achievable now I'm not 19 and mostly existing on cigarettes...

No weightloss this week but that is ok. The food I am eating is so delicious that I am motivated to carry on!

I know that Bootcamp is hard. And I also know that low carbing anyway can prove to be a challenge. The world, sadly, isn't really set up for us low carbers! And there are always going to be times and occasions when we will end up eating far more carbs than we should do/we feel comfortable with.

Last night, for me, is a very good case in point. I went to have dinner with an old friend, who had arranged for some other (mutual) friends to join us, as a surprise - which was lovely. But the restaurant that they had booked was a Chinese, and the food was communal/sharing - so even though my individual choices were as low carb as I could make them, I ended up having to share with them, and eat stuff I wouldn't normally have ordered. In that situation, the only thing to do is to accept it, and enjoy it.

But what my OP was about was to make everyone who is new to low carbing aware of the reason why it's so important to stick to it in the first two weeks.

And there is a big difference between being in a situation where you can't avoid carbs and a situation where you are choosing to eat carbs. Emotional eating and PMT are all difficult to deal with, but you do have to learn to do it. No-one else can do it for you, sadly.

A few years ago my mum had leukaemia and lost so much weight I could see every single one of her vertebrae including her tail bone. She still had a roll of fat on her tummy. So I'm afraid you might have to just accept that one!

Disappointed to only lose a pound and finding boot camp quite difficult. Did have a couple of slip ups but can honestly say I tried really really hard so has hoped for more of a loss on the scales. Oh well, have definitely lost inches and clothes feel looses so not all bad. Is coffee with milk not allowed? Coffee with cream makes me gag and I'm not even thinking about the whole coffee with butter scenario on here <gulps hard>

Went out for lunch with DH today (he had the day off) and had cheeseburger, with no bun and no fries, but extra salad.

Dinner tonight was roast chicken, leeks panfried in butter, with chilli and cream, and red cabbage braised in butter with shallots and raspberry vinegar. And cheese and flaxseed crackers, made as a gift for me by the lovely Willie!

I swam for an hour this morning, which was great as I am allegedly a strong swimmer, but hadn't been for 6 weeks as over the hols I was either at work or looking after the children. Today was the first day I had all 3 at school all day. Wow. Got so much done. Am expecting not to be able to move tomorrow though.

Supper here was leftover kale and roasted celeriac, fried into a sort of hash with a friend egg and salad. It was fab. Better even than with the roast the day before. Gosh i love food.

It's my birthday tomorrow - so far no one has mentioned cake and I am fortunately at work then taking kids to piano lesson so I might be able to escape it. There are however three fairy cakes left over from today's bake session so if the kids want to sing happy birthday, I'll pop a candle in and they can eat one each. I'll eat a babybel to keep them company.

Sleep well everyone and try not to get up too often to wee!

Demented, I can't bear coffee with cream either. The texture is too slippery, even for a fat fiend like me. I have one cup of coffee with milk a day and rest of the time (black or herbal) tea. It's a bummer I know. DOn't be too down about your pound. If you stick with it, you will lose the weight. I find my loss to be slow and steady (with lots of weeks of STS for apparently no reason).

Managed to get another 2kg (4 pounds?) off this week. There is definately a waist appearing, although its a bit saggy at present. I feel I have so much more energy and don't feel stiff. I am delighted and am not hungry at all. Started last week and lost 4kg last week.
This is good. Nearly down to my fullypregnant weight now!

I do however have a funeral to attend on Friday and I think I will have a drink or two then. The friend was a big drinker and it would feel a bit disrespectful not to. My plan is to make sure I drink loads of water and really keep the carbs really low all week.

Lavenderhoney I've been going to bed early all week. I'm feeling better for it. I think it helping with the night time craving which I suspect are not hunger but tiredness.

Made flapjacks with DS today did not even lick the bowl. brimming with pride at myself and feeling great about really being on right path.

Woo hoo! Woke up feeling lighter this morning and lo and behold - a further 2 pounds if since yesterday! I think cutting down the dairy must have made a difference. I can really see a difference in the mirror too.

Not sure about lunch yet but dinner will be lamb steak I think. It will be early as have a PTA meeting at 6 (daft time). I have a bag of spinach leaves so will have that as a salad with the lamb and fry some shallots and half a red pepper and a couple of cherry toms and make a creamy Harissa sauce to put on top.

After recording my 2lb loss yesterday, and sticking to the rules throughout, today I am bloated and 1lb heavier than yesterday. I can't work out how that has happened!

It feels like wheat or wine belly, but I haven't touched either. The only thing I can think it might be is some Cheddar cheese I had on Sunday - probably about 4oz. Last week I only had full fat Philly and lost weight.

I'll try to do some cardio exercise tonight and see if that helps.

I also feel a tad hormonal today (52 and going through menopause), so that may be linked.

Torro - don't worry about it. Your body does naturally fluctuate. If you're going to weigh daily, you will have to accept that.

If you're feeling bloated, it's worth trying to drink a bit more water to see if that helps.

But otherwise - onwards and downwards!

just a quick post from work, where the british heart foundation were in doing quick health checks. i got my cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure done

after 18 months of low carb and (very) high fat, all results were well within normal. obviously this is a sample of one and your mileage may vary wink, but hopefully this is at least a little reassuring to people still thinking at the back of their mind 'but what about the cholesterol!' grin

Hi all, am madly behind with everything in life at the moment, so just dashing in to say 3lbs off after week one (I'm almost a year doing LC but had a rather off plan few weeks in the summer hols)

Yesterday's food
B one fried egg with a few small tomatoes
L spring greens, 2 slices bacon, mushrooms all fried in butter and the bacon fat, topped with half an avocado. Yum.
D beef stew with lots of veg
S duck pâté on cucumber slices

As the weather gets chillier, I have starting drinking water that is half from the tap and half cooled boiled water from the kettle. I find this easier than freezing cold, esp first thing in the morning. I get easily get 3 big mugs of tepid water down while I stare out the window get going in the morning, more than I could drink if it was cold. I also make sure I drink a glass with every cup of (decaff) coffee I have. And I also drink in tandem with the dog! He's pretty self regulating and is a good reminder, so if he trots off to his bowl to have a big drink after a walk or play, then I trot off to the kitchen and grab another mug full!

3lb off for me too which I'm pleased about as I had a couple of bad days (tea at claridges, had to have champagne and little cakes and sandwiches!).

I had underestimated the carbs in cabbage and tomatoes so will be cutting down on those this week - I found some ketostix in my cupboard just to keep me on the straight and narrow.

3lb off my lowest weight then another 8 to go to ideal weight!

For those frustrated at lack of weight loss, keep at it. I have found that I lose some, then put on a couple of pounds overnight, stay at that for three or four days, then lose a pound a day for the next three or four days. Then it starts again with another gain. This has happened three times. But overall I am eight pounds down from where I started. Think of the big picture, we are in it for the long haul, it will happen, and we are healthier too (thats my little mantra after scales torture!)

Thanks Stunt! grin I haven't put anything up for ages; haven't had the time really. I did take some pics the other day so must get on with it and draft a post.

Cider make your courgette pasta like this and preferably leave it to dry out on kitchen towel for a while (less soggy when you cook it, that way).

Slice some leeks (I used two for two people) and dice some mushrooms. Fry them gently on a low heat for about half an hour, stirring from time to time to stop them sticking, this lets all the moisture evaporate off and leaves them lovely and soft. I'd usually use butter with a smidgen of olive oil to fry them, but yesterday I used some of the chicken fat I'd reserved from the roast. Add plenty of freshly ground black pepper. towards the end of the cooking time I added a clove of chopped garlic, some rosemary and thyme and the leftover roast chicken. When it's all ready, add a generous dollop of creme fraiche (or slosh of double cream) and a generous dollop of cream cheese. I added in some grated gruyere cheese, but you could use whatever you've got (or indeed none at all!). Blue cheese would be nice with it.

Fry your courgette ribbons in butter on quite a high heat - they only need a couple of minutes as you want them to retain a bit of 'bite' and not go soggy.

Went to the gym for the first time in weeks today - it felt really good to feel my muscles working again although I did feel a bit sick by the end... Must remember to ease back into exercise in future confused
I'm walking 4 miles a day now as well as the gym so hopefully that's helping too. 6 weeks until the wedding and 6lb to go...

I did the bootcamp for the summer and lost weight but found that I was focusing too much on the numbers on the scale so although I'll be joining you all doing the bootcamp and staying on the threads for tips and such I won't be adding myself to the spreadsheet as I'd rather weigh myself every few weeks as it just suits me better.
Just wanted to say thanks to BIWI. Your advice on the last bootcamp was brill and I have since bought Dr Briffa's book as well which is also really helpful. This way of eating is a lot easier to follow than a diet and it really does work if you stick to it. Thanks for running it again BIWI smile

Horrible day timing wise. only just grabbing some lunch. slipped but only into bootcamp light territory as a means to 1. get something in me post training/at lunch at lunchtime and 2. a source of salt. Just going to grab something resembling proper food as out at tea time in another meeting <sigh> Not sure my meals know whether they are coming or going atm but trying to eat at meal times and trying hard to stick to 3 meals a day. No issues wrt emotional eating and actually feeling ok. Weigh in this morning treated me far kinder then I deserved.

For those struggling with emotional eating. it is worth sorting and not ignoring. When you find ways to avoid and to deal with it in a way not through food then you will feel so much better and lighter about it. Stress will still happen but you don't have the additional guilt/self loathing for being weak etc. It isn't easy, no one will tell you it is. But it is worth it in the long run. needs to continue to practise what she preaches

My weight bounces up and down like that as well Jan, it is definitely not linear weight loss. If people feel compelled to weigh themselves daily then I recommend focussing on the Monday weigh in as being the weight that counts, anything else is for information only.

I've been eating a lot of courgettes on this WOE and my fave way to cook them is to cut them into wedges: four for a normal size courgette, six for a big courgette. They're much easier to turn if you're frying them and they don't go as watery as sliced courgettes. If you do slice them then leaving them overnight in the fridge seems to allow them to dry out enough so they don't get waterlogged when cooked.

My tip for courgette tagliatelle is to cut the courgette in half lengthways and then try to scoop out as much of the wee watery seed bits as you can (I scrape a teaspoon along those bits I can see), before using the peeler/mandoline to make the tagliatelle strips. I haven't tried drying it - will do so next time.

Just realised that since I've been low-carbing (two weeks) my concentration span seems to have doubled.
For the past month I've had trouble concentrating on my driving lessons, but yesterdays was actually fantastic. I didn't have trouble remembering whatever jargon he was warbling at me, I could focus, I didn't stress too much about little mistakes.
The only change I've made really is the food I eat, could it really have this big an effect?
Just wondering if it's just all starting to come together or if it really could be the low carbing!

Really? It made my brain extremely sluggish for a whole week. Better now, but certainly no sharper than usual. Attempted a run yesterday and it was noticeably harder - legs like lead. Maybe I am not yet converting fat to energy very efficiently.

Marking my place for catching up later. I missed the first week as I've been on holiday. Will be making soup later for tomorrow's lunch - can't wait to be on the low carb wagon smile

Today is a prime example of planning your meals.
I took Greek yoghurt with me but due to meetings did t get chance to even put it in the fridge never mind eating it do had to chuck it out.
The only vaguely low carb menu in canteen at work was leek and potato soup so had to eat that and leave the lumps of potato.
Had cheese and cucumber when I got in and not really wanting a meal but DH has made chilli and courgette ribbons.

Today I was, and I say so myself, a little bit fab. I am a self confessed chocoholic, can easily eat 3 bars without thinking and can become very very greedy with it. So today we had work cakes and goodies. Before lc I would have seen this as an opportunity to sneak past as many times as I could get away with, probably eating loads as there was loads to be eaten.

Today, nada, nothing, I didnt even WANT any. I ate my chicken, I chomped on my cucumber and I sloshed my water. With no desire to cheat at all.

This is unheard of. Even DH is gobsmacked grin

just recording what I had today:-

B - third of an avocado, 1 stick celery, brie type cheese(LC)
L finger of coconut oil (just bought the jar and had to try it), 6 thin slices ham, most of a bag of mixed leaf salad, about 20 pine nuts tiny kernel things
T - finally realised that I am ignoring the kids while I eat like king, so did a fab stir fry chicken, peppers, beansprouts, leek, broccoli ends, and chucked in tin of cocnut milk at the end. Plus lots of spices, but it was still a bit bland. The kids had theirs with rice. Feel slightly less guilty....

1 cup of tea so far, but may need to treat myself to another later.

And walked halfway to work and halfway back -people keep stopping to offer me lifts, and I usually refuse, but the wind was so strong I was owrried that I would be hit by a falling tree.

Just watching bake off and it all looks so lovely. Must change channels.

I decides to count my carbs today, more out of curiosity than anything and have totalled 35g.
I actually think its a good idea to do once in a while because its helped me to understand what sort of quantities to use. Especially 'store cupboard' type ingredients like garlic and Worcester sauce. smile

Felt totally and utterly shit today. Tried a jog last night and just couldn't force my'legs to move. Today had awful headache, dizzy, felt really ill. So have had cheese and crackers tonight.
Think will move from boot camp to boot camp light. Have generally been feeling better and losing inches, but no way could sit drinking water and eating hard boiled eggs tonight. Needed more.
This is going to be hard in this cold weather when I crave a hot breakfast like bagels or bacon rolls. I don't have time for breakfast before I leave for work, and sitting at my desk with a bowl of yoghurt is horrible in cold weather. Any ideas?

captainmummy I had bulletproof coffee, mackerel pate and cucumber, coffee with cream, yogurt, protein shake, 2 babybels and homemade meatballs in tomato sauce with French beans.

In my wisdom, back in August and pre-Bootcamp, I instigated a Bake Off watching party at my house. Friends are coming round every week to watch the programme and eat the cakes they've brought with them (to tie in with the programme of course so we made tray bakes this evening). Last week there were only 2 of us so although I hadn't baked, I couldn't avoid having a slice of my friend's Bakewell Tart.

Tonight I kept thinking of all of you who've been turning down birthday cake. I managed to make a tray bake and only eat a few crumbs, and then not eat any cake all evening. Did have two cups of tea but NO CAKE!!

Totally agree about the staying full forever phenomena. It's amazing. Since you're supposed to eat in the morning, even if not hungry, I'd say eating something after 10hrs of nothing would probably be a good idea.

Good news - I was the perfect low carb food angel yesterday. I managed to dodge the cake and had a fab steak and mushrooms for supper.

Bad news - I did drink a bit of champagne. Can really feel it this am. Still, I suppose you are only 44 once!

My period seems to have started early as well. Wonder if it's all the oestrogen being dragged out of my fat cells. Yeuch.

According to mfp, since the start of bc my carbs are average 10g a day, coming from cream in coffee and veg/ salad. Is that what I should be aiming for?

I'm exercising as well, which duh! the penny dropped yesterday- means I am building muscle tone at the same time as losing ( hopefully)

Dinner last night was nice "serve yourself" platter of griddled, sliced tuna, buttered runner beans (from the garden), some broad beans (also from the garden), cherry tomatoes and eggs mollet (eggs boiled so the white has firmed and the inside is still runny and then halved).

Ds who doesn't like fish loved the "meat" which he thought was lamb confused. Will need to serve it that way again! grin

Lavenderhoney - that's very low and would suggest that you're not eating enough veg/salad. Even the hardest phase of the Atkins diet, induction, has you at 20g carbs per day! What have you been eating?

Don't know without knowing what you're eating/how much you're eating!

It's true that we don't count calories or weigh our carbs on Bootcamp. The aim is to make sure that you are eating enough so that you aren't hungry. This is not a WOE about feeling deprived.

However, that said, it isn't carte blanche to stuff yourself silly and eat massive portions of food swimming in creamy sauces grin

Why are you worried? What kind of food and portions are you eating?

I hope that's ok ^ I've been eating something a bit like that, 2 egg omelette, lots of leaves at lunch etc, but I have had to force myself to eat meals the las couple of days an definitely no snacks.

It's true that being in ketosis does suppress the appetite, which is why people are talking about not being hungry or only eating small amounts.

As a daily practice, though, this can be dangerous as it does risk becoming hungry and therefore snacking on the wrong things.

What you are eating looks fine - however, you might want to ask yourself if your portions are large. A three egg omelette could be cut down to two. A 'big' salad could be reduced to 'medium'

Often we eat large portions because that's what we're used to doing - i.e. it's a habit. And this can often be the reason why we put weight on in the first place!

Ultimately only you can decide if you need to cut down. You haven't posted your weight this week, so I can't see if you've lost/not lost.

If you haven't lost/haven't lost enough, why not see if cutting down portions sizes helps you? But please don't do this to the extent that you start to get hungry!

Coleslaw recipe

125g white cabbage (less than 1/4 of a cabbage)
75g carrot (1 medium-sized carrot)
25g shallot (1/2 a banana/echalion shallot)

Slice white cabbage thinly
Grate carrot finely (don't use the largest holes on the grater)
Chop shallot finely

Add oil and wine vinegar - roughly 3 tablespoons oil and 1 tablespoon vinegar, and salt and black pepper. Stir everything well together. Leave for half an hour or so. Just before serving, stir in a tablespoon of mayo.

This will make 2 portions

Today will be challenging grin I'm working 2pm -2am which seems to mess up eating patterns but I have planned.
Coffee with cream now plus 1L water
Egg and bacon at midday- another litre of water
Tuna mayonnaise with salad to eat at some point (meal break will be around 8pm)
Have made cauliflower soup to take in a thermos so can eat it on the run.

I find it really important to have something comforting to eat on nights as it's that 1.00am time when you've just done a shit job and the chip shop is the only thing open... I manage to convince myself I need something hot so soup will hopefully fill the gap.

Should be able to manage 4L of water.

I find that Willie I also get cycle linked insomnia which also makes me eat more. Day three with proper focus and it is easier to stay firm. Just eaten a proper lunch at lunch time. And had a good solid breakfast. Tea is planned but I need to tweak it as it is light on the veg and fairly heavy on protein but seeing as breakfast was scrambled eggs, bacon and mushrooms and lunch was mince, mushrooms and leeks with "gravy" and cheese I think I need to add some more veg to the day. Not sure how as it is left over mince for tea as it really needs eating up and it has been too long made up to consider sticking in the freezer really. Any ideas?

Bronx - can't believe BIWI hasn't commented but hot chocolate!!!! On Bootcamp! Nooooo! It's full of sugar. I think the milk was the least of the problem!

Well I had an odd day yesterday. Woke up headachy and everything tasted off. Especially water. Didn't drink nearly enough as really struggled with it for some reason. Food wise I was ok.

D - couldn't be bothered cooking what I'd planned and really wanted comfort food so had some bolognaise with grated cheese.
Resisted the wine at PTA meeting and just had fizzy water. Did have a couple of glasses of water when I got home too.

Today is busy and I'm flying to Dublin early in the morning so using up stuff in the fridge.

Just been to the health shop and bought a load of herbal tea so looking forward to trying them. Im hopingtthat they are all ok to have. Had a look at the coconut slices thinking that they would be nice to put in my yoghurt. I put them straight back down when I saw there was 44g of carbs per 100g!

Purple - herbal teas should be ok - I drink rooibos, with coconut oil at breakfast, without rest of the time. I also have some liquorice tea which i drink if i'm craving something sweet - it is strangely sweet but has no carbs.

BIWI- here's what I had today- after what you wrote I made myself have some chunks of cheddar, but I really wasnt bothered and its very unusual for me to snack!!
I've been lc since jan, and don't tend to eat unless I'm hungry, I found this a slow process of stoping carbs.


2 coffees with dash of cream
Brunch as I don't feel hungry at all in the morning, and I go to the gym straight after drop off and can't exercise properly if I have eaten.
Brunch was left over courgettes and leeks fried in butter with a handful of grated cheese on top and microwaved.
Dinner - roast belly of pork, asparagus and sweet corn.

I will have drunk 3 litres of water by bedtime. I don't feel hungry at all, and don't feel inclined to snack ever.. It comes up as 25g which is the most for one day this bootcamp.
If I'm not at the gym, I might have a BAB with the dc, but then just salad with sardines for lunch as I am so full.

What do you think? I always cook a roast for the dc with veg and its dripping with butter, fat and some olive oil. Yum!

For some reason I'm craving sweet stuff today. It's the first time it's bothered me. Luckily I haven't anything in the house! Wish I could think of something that would satisfy my cravings that is low carb. I'm trying to cut down on dairy a bit, as it sometimes makes me nauseous and if I'm not careful it stops me losing weight. But I know from past experience this is quite frustrating, as it limits what I can eat.

Have had way too much cheese today - but dinner was bolognaise sauce with shredded cabbage and I am stuffed now.

I have had a strange day food wise - I just don't seem to feel hungry until about 5pm and then I am suddenly starving! Not helpful for meal times with DP confused
I had a bulletproof coffee and a protein shake with soy milk for breakfast and then another protein shake after the gym.
Wasn't hungry at lunchtime so I had some yogurt and a babybel, coffee with cream around 2pm then had another babybel at 3.30.
Demolished some leftover meatballs in tomato sauce at 5.30 (didn't even heat them up!) when DS was having his dinner and now I'm full.
I really should have had some veg! Is anyone else having issues with not feeling hungry enough to eat at the right times? I just feel sick at the thought of food if I'm not properly hungry sad

I am, but my dd is a pita if we don't eat together so I make myself have something.

B: grated cauli, 2 rashers of bacon fried together then an egg stirred in and a tiny bit of cheese on top.

L: tuna, cucumber & mayo with half a bag of leaves and a few cherry tomatoes, with a bit of olive oil.

D: 1 1/2 pork loin chops, with steamed swede & brocilli & courgette strips fried in buttr.

No snacks. 2 cups of tea with a dash of milk. Mega sore throat so water is slow going. Will be at 3.5l by bedrime.

Battery gone in scales so my daily obsessive weigh in is out. Jane feel loose but I bet I'll be disappointed come Monday weigh.

Cider, no sugar at all! I made it with cocoa powder + milk, so by reading the back of the cocoa powder (0.3g of carbs? 3g of carbs? Something with a 3 wink) I thought, oh, brilliant, I can still have hot chocolate.

I was shock. Thought I'd had a good day!

Today is the first day I've experienced the not being hungry thing! Really busy at work and didn't get a break until 4pm. Only then did I realise I hadn't had lunch, just didn't miss it. Before bootcamp if this has happened I'm getting weak and shaky by 2pm and end up eating whatever biscuits etc are around but that didn't occur to me today.

So what I want to know is: is the shaky feeling just a sugar crash rather than hunger? - I always thought I needed to snack often so it didn't happen. This is something of a revelation for me.

Anyway quite a good day today
B: bulletproof coffee, scrambled egg and some asparagus
L: salad and mackerel (with lots of lemon juice and pepper) and mayo
D: liver stroganoff - adapted from this Delia recipe just substituted shallots and double cream for the onion and creme fraiche served with buttered steamed cabbage

Wow, bullet - that's a lot of dairy there! Why protein shakes? Can you not eat a proper breakfast? And some proper food after the gym? Just have a look at the ingredients in your protein shake!

You must plan in some real meals - so you can eat enough veg/salad - your day today has not really been a good one ...

I've always used protein shakes biwi, I'm happy with the ingredients smile I realise they aren't bootcamp. But they are low in carbs.
There's no way I could eat solid food immediately after the gym. I usually have my BP coffee, do the school run then have breakfast but I went straight to the gym this morning.
I do plan meals but if I just don't feel hungry then I don't eat them. I've now had a small steak and a pile of broccoli with lots of butter. I'll veg it up tomorrow!

bullet - Why do you have a shake after the gym if you've had one before? Do you actually need it? You would, actually, be far better going to the gym in a fasted state and then having the protein afterwards. They may be low carb, but they are full of shit over-processed stuff.

stepping - that shaky feeling is low blood sugar, which your body translates as hunger. This is why we aim to keep our blood sugar levels stable, so that we don't experience this. (That said, if you hadn't eaten anything till 4pm, I'm not surprised you were hungry!)

Because that's what my trainer recommends smile

Hello . Bit of a crappy eating day today spent 8 hour total in various tidgy airports with hardly any food availble. Very tempted to buy something carby but resisted. You are right that we need to be organised as doing it on the hoof is neigh on impossible here in the arse end of nowhere.

B cup of tea, 2 egg mayo on cucmber slices
L 40 g peanuts (no other food availble 4g carb so I may not see the sharp end of BIWI's big stick.)
S few feta cubes
D bolognese sauce including courgettes, celery, butter eaten on cucmber slices.... cucumber is my new bread.
S boiled egg with cream, 5 macademia nuts

Also 1 coffee and 1 tea

I am hinting around for a snack after dinner and wondering what you eat to satisfy that gap after dinner. Or should I reprogramme oot tell myself that the gap is wrong and just an od sweettooth habit?

I just want the scales to be kind this week. Twould be a real bugger if there was no change after all this willpower.

whodunnit - the limit on cheese isn't anything to do with carbs - there are not carbs in cheese. It's about whether or not you're sensitive to dairy. There is also the issue of calories. At this stage, you don't need to worry about calories, but as you get nearer to your target weight you may have to take this into account, which means you may have to think about how much cheese you're eating, as it is quite calorific.

bullet - I'm glad your trainer is supportive of low carbing - that makes life so much easier. But I think you really need to look at what you're eating and how it fits with Bootcamp rules. You're not really planning your meals, you're eating a lot of processed stuff and (from your posts last week) you are also cheating.

I'm glad that you find yourself not feeling hungry, as this is evidence that you are in ketosis, so this WOE should be working for you. But I worry that you're not eating properly. You aren't eating enough veg/salad - and you're leaving eating until you are ravenously hungry, instead of eating regularly.

It's up to you, obviously, if you choose to follow Bootcamp rules.

Cheese! Well I ate cheese (as snacks and in broccoli and stilton soup) on Monday and on Tuesday morning was 2lb up. So on Tuesday I ate no cheese, this morning I was 3lb down. Which could be the Cheese, Gromit; or it could be natural fluctuations and a slapped wrist for weighing daily.

But of course I'm suspecting the cheese!

When I read Dr Briffa's book last week it said that, despite not containing carbs, cheese can increase your insulin production (just like carbs do - and insulin makes you deposit fat). But it's usually counteracted by some other chemical that it increases which has an opposite effect. I guess this works differently on different people, so cheese can stall some people.

I wouldn't have got this far without cheese though - and its way better to snack on cheese than toast!

Bullet- protein shakes are great if you are trying to build muscle. Are you? You have 2 in a very short space of time. Does your trainer know you are replacing meals iwth them?

And you have had NO veg at all today. Honestly you need veg for fibre and bowel health.


Bootcamp rules are quite prescriptive and for good reason.

You aren't really low carbing there - just replacing meals with processed crap and having one meal a day. You may as well be on slim fast.

Been feeling a bit rough this week with annoying virus but still feeling massively calmer and healthier than before bootcamp. Had a big wobble this afternoon when I went food shopping hungry and all I could thing of that I fancied eating involved beans or rice. I was looking longingly at the biscuits that they strew around so temptingly, too. hmm It's really dangerous for me to let myself get hungry - made me start thinking wistfully about wine, too, and I've been amazingly (for boozy me) good in cutting my alcohol like this. Much harder to resist the wine than the forbidden foods, tbh.

Anyway I bought a crab pate and ate the whole tub when I got in with cucumber sticks. It was lovely! The meal situation was saved by some really great reductions on the fish counter, so got a load of squid for around £3 (half price) and a sea bream with fennel butter for £3.29 (reduced from £6.29). It fed both of us so that was a bargain!

B/L - tuna and cheese patties (DD loves these!) with fried tomatoes
S - crab pâté and cucumber sticks
D - sea bream with mashed buttery swede and spinach cooked with shallot, garlic and a dash of cream. It was bloody lovely!
Too much tea, plenty of water.

OMG - after a slow start, I am now 8lb down! I can't believe it! Even when I was running 4 or 5 times a week and training for a half marathon I just couldn't seem to get below 11st. I'm now 10.5. I must admit, I'm looking forward to being able to reintroduce a little carb, but am definitely not going back to my old carby twat ways. And I'm certainly not going back to carby breakfasts - they set you up so badly for the day.

Holmes - I totally agree about the carby breakfasts! When an ad for some wholewheat sugary cereal comes on, rabbiting about how it 'fills you up till Lunch' I have to restrain myself from yelling at te screen 'No it doesn't! Not unless Lunch is 2 hours after breakfast!'
God I used to have to eat every 2 hours, before, even on stuff like FruitnFibre.

Captain I so agree - every single other "diet" I've been on went wrong 2 hours after breakfast actually probably as soon as I'd done the school run

Would the briffa book help me with DD and her insane activity schedule?

I have just posted on the nutrition Q&A. Twice a week she does gymnastics from 4 until 6, then has to be at the pool at 6.45 to swim until 9.05.
Someone at the swimming club advised yogurt or a cereal bar hmm

I am giving her a wholewheat sandwich with chicken and sweet corn, some fruit and a drink then something hot in the car or the way home.

But the sports nutritionists keep pointing at carby carb carbs and we (as a family) just don't process carbs well.

Would it help <clings to people's legs crying a bit>

Right, this is the last I am going to say about protein shakes! I am building muscle, so I need a lot of protein and at regular intervals. I am not generally using them to replace meals, yesterday was an exception due to a very busy day and needing to fit the gym in somewhere. I am happy using them, my trainer is happy with me using them and I don't think they impede my weight loss.

Yesterday was an exceptional day for me, I do not usually go most of the day without eating vegetable or salad, and I rarely skip breakfast.
Also I did eat some vegetables in the evening - this is what I ate yesterday again

B- bulletproof coffee, protein shake with soy milk
S- protein shake
L - 150g yogurt, babybel
S - babybel
D - meatballs in tomato sauce (hm sauce of celery, tomat0, shallot a little carrot)
2nd D - small feather steak, pile of tenderstem broccoli, butter.

So, I know I should have eaten more veggies but I don't think it's quite as bad as you are all making out!
I appreciate there are rules and I am trying to stick to them but sometimes it is difficult and days are busy and I am finding eating when I am not hungry very difficult.

And biwi I am very grateful for the support of this thread and all the work you put in to making this possible. I know it might sound like I'm not - but I really am! thanks

Pag I'd give her a light protein based meal before... Something like chicken with sweetcorn and baby tomatoes in mayonnaise. Then some nuts and berries eg almonds and blueberries, in between training sessions. Then whatever you usually give her afterwards. And loads of water.

Would she eat that? Then you've got plenty of protein but some complex carbs for immediate (but gradual) glucose release too.

Loopy - BIWI will no doubt start the week3 thread with warnings about not being disheartened by NO losses in week3/4 sometimes 5. The losses in the first few weeks are mainly water weight with a bit of fat, and the biggest change is converting your body to fat-burning. After this the weight loss will be much slower, as the glycogen stores (which house instant-access fat/water) are already empty and the body is now looking at your long-term fat stores.

OK so my old scales say 10 stone, and the newer ones I bought which used to always show me lighter than the old ones, say 10 stone 9 one minute and 10 stone 7 the next. Then I go back to the old ones and they start saying 10 stone 2.

My aim is to see a 9.

I think the god of LC is sending me a message, via possession of the scales, and the message is of course step away from the scales Nigella

Tape measure or the fit of clothes are always going to be your best bet Nigella.
I am avoiding the scales until monday (probably tuesday if we are honest as there seems to just be something about monday mornings)

Pag - Briffa probably won't be much help in your DD's specific situation. And most sports nutritionists will still advise you to eat carbs. This book is more likely to be helpful

Your DD certainly needs energy, and so I'd be focussing on giving her more fat. The complication you have is obviously that you need to be giving her something portable. I'd ditch the fruit, personally. Does she like milk? How about a full fat chocolate milk? (Although chances are, all the ones that are ready made will be low fat!)

Nigella My old scales broke so I bought new handy-dandy ones which give hugely fluctuating readings. Incidentally I think ours are sexist as they give the same all the time to DH and DS yet vary for me and DD until they send us shreiking from the bathroom! I go on fit of clothes.

My weight has not changed much over the last few months yet I have gone down a clothes size and am getting comments on my weight loss confused

Captainmummy - I too have to restrain myself from ranting about cereal - Dh already thinks I'm crazy for low carbing. He was a bit shock at the speedy weight loss though, and may have stopped making scathing remarks!

Yeah, she does need carbs, she a kid. But they only suggest carb and it drives me batshit " what about some pasta and a yogurt or a cereal bar?"

I guess making a good chicken mix to eat with a small amount of wholewheat pasta is a good basis. Or perhaps some chunky soup?

Oh btw - lunch is aubergine melts. They are cooking right now. If they turn out well, I might go and put my first entry on the recipes thread.

Breakfasts have been egg mayo with LC sausage or bacon or mushroom, lunch has been either chicken drumsticks or cold bacon or tuna mayo with salad, dinner has been chilli without beans or roast pork with veg and swede, things like that.

I have cut down on dairy as too much makes me nauseous, but also I think it does slow my weight loss down sometimes. But cheese and yoghurt are the most enjoyable things about this WOE for me hmm

I'm struggling to drink water now the weather has changed, but am drinking herbal tea instead.

The main problem today is I'm craving something sweet, preferably chocolate AND I got on the scales, only to find I hadn't lost, although I thought I had hmm

I know I need to step away from the scales. This happens to me every time. If I don't see a loss, I get disheartened and give up. I start to think, why bother if I'm not losing weight when I stick strictly to this WOE.

Originally I wasn't going to weigh myself at all, but then I decided I needed to see the weight coming off. Now I wish I hadn't hmm

loopy - don't worry about the whingeing - that's what we're here for!

Your meals look fine, but have you been keeping your fat levels up? It's difficult to tell from your descriptions.

And you really do need to make sure you're drinking the water.

I get what you say about cheese/yoghurt, but it may well be worth having a couple of days without either, just to see what happens.

But best to avoid the scales until Monday. And remember - we're really just only half way through week 2.

I found drinking lots of water easier when it was hot. At the moment all I want is hot drinks, I'm really feeling the cold sad. I guess peppermint tea is just hot water really though, no carbs?

I add HM mayo to meals wherever I can - recipe includes 1 egg yolk, 1.5 tbsp cider vinegar, 350 ml sunflower oil, salt and pepper, nothing else. I think that's fairly low carb?

I use full fat mince, eat the skin on chicken, eat pork crackling, have full fat yoghurt when I have it, add coconut cream to curry, fry everything in butter and add butter to veg, so I think I should be getting enough fat.

I think I'm just having a rubbish day mood-wise sad My usual way of coping would be a bar of chocolate or a trip to the local cafe if possible, that is all not possible now. I know this is emotional eating and that is my biggest problem. I'm never hungry, but have realised how much of my eating is emotional.

You sound like you're doing great Loopy - stay on the wagon long enough to see the effects. Remember you've already lost 6 packs of lard (!!) You are allowed low-carb snacks if you have to indulge that emotional eating thing (I know all about that.)

I'm really feeling the cold this week too, I'm going to have to find alternatives to salad for lunch, I've had soup some of this week but was back to a chilly salad today.

Someone was mixing boiled water with tap water so they could drink it more comfortably - could be one to try?

The reason for the water is, it flushes out the ketones (into your wee). Ketones are produced when we burn our own fat (or something like that). But if they get to a certain level in our blood, that all stops, we stop burning our own fat. So keep drinking the water, to keep burning our fat. Motivating, no?

Slow and steady weight loss is good because it gives your skin a chance to catch up with the new you.

newstart and vipers you're right about focusing on the measurements rather than scales. Another good day here. I'm very much of the eat when I'm hungry school of thought. Sometimes I go for ages between meals. I know this WOE makes me fuller for longer - I stay full overnight too.

I'm still reeling from some of those bodybuilder links. That last one BIWI posted. What's all that about? Looks like she's pulled on some kind of fake suit.
Still on track here food-wise those def not enough water yesterday and today after being really good with it up til now. Trying to remedy that but have to dash to supermarket and worry I'll have to leave my trolley down one of the aisles to rush for a wee...
God, Pag that's am amazing schedule your DD has. Pity she doesn't like nuts for fast re-fuelling – what about peanut butter that someone suggested earlier? My DD used to swim in our local squad but gave up when she was around 13 – and after all those trips to the ruddy pool. The least she could have done was become an olympic athlete. (just kidding) She has a lovely lean figure after all that sport, lucky thing.

D tbc maybe lamb chops with buttery greens

snacks radishes with butter, cheese slices with marmite,
dinner will be roast pork with crackling and roast cauli and prob some other veg too.

Sounds like you might not be eating enough, and possibly not enough fat. List out for me what you've been eating/drinking over the last few days.

Dh made me a coffee this morning and put in more than my normal dash of cream. He was very heavy handed- it tasted really sweet and I was sure he had put sugar in until I tried his sugary coffee and it was foulsmile

... and could also mean that you have a problem with your electrolyte balance. Are you eating plenty of salt? Salmon, spinach and avocado all good things to eat to ensure you're getting sufficient sodium, potassium and magnesium, along with the salt.

Try drinking a hot drink made with Oxo or Marmite or Bovril - that should help with the salt, and make sure you're cooking with it/using it on your food.

Weird. I tried hard last week and only lost a pound. Got fed up of the headaches and feeling exhausted so pretty much gave up....since then I seem to have lost another 3lbs!
Don't know where I'm at now - what works and what doesn't. However am thinner, and that's all that matters
