Low-carb diets

Probably stupid question about meat and fat

Hello all,

I'm planning starting a Paleo inspired lower carb diet. I'm drawing inspiration from some Paleo books and from the website Mark's Daily Apple. I'm doing a slow start because it takes me ages to get things into gear in terms of food planning and so on.

Anyway I had a question about meat and fat. I know you are supposed to eat fat on this diet, and I'm using full fat and natural products such as butter, coconut oil etc.

My concern is the meat. I can't bear fatty meat, I find it really really unpalatable. If I make a beef stew or cook bacon I will cut off all visible fat because I find it a disgusting taste and texture.

I'm I denying myself essential fats if I do this?

I'm not expert, but I don't think you'd be missing out on anything vital. Maybe try to have some avocados, also nuts, olives, extra butter with your boiled eggs? Also fatty fish if you can manage it, and/or omega 3 supplements.

Good luck. I feel like a different person on paleo, and you get used to eating this way (esp with dark chocolate most days Blush )

I don't think its essential for the fat to come from your meat. Its simply an easy way to get good fat if you can eat it. Because of growing up in a low fat culture a lot of people just can't stomach it. Sometimes there are others in the family still eating low fat so adaptations have to be made to simplify mealtimes. Just add fat in other ways. Mayo, extra butter, avocados, fry don't grill. If you really think you aren't getting enough theres always fat bombs to fall back on. (Loads of recipes if you Google)

Hi
If you don't like the taste then you don't have to eat it. MDA is a fan of offal which I can't stomach. We all have our tastes. You could use lard or dripping in cooking if you don't mind their tastes? Dripping I think is the king of fats. You also can use duck and goose fat. All are fab for frying an egg and roasting potatoes (ok not strictly primal but heh). Don't know if you have tried them but apart from lard I would say they don't taste of geese/duck etc.

Ps I recommend chicken breast chopped up, marinated in buttermilk over night and fried in duck fat. Think I may have got that off MDA!!

Yes, I make my own Greek yoghurt and I save the whey and use that to marinade chicken in place of buttermilk. Its lovely and moist.

I always use olive oil for everything it has so many health benefits, esp. if you don't like animal fats don't force yourself to eat them. I even have olive oil on toasted ryvitas etc. !
