Low-carb diets

Paleo - bloating / uncomfortable / cramps

I've been on the paleo diet for around 12 weeks. Lost over a stone and generally become a lot fitter and found eating this way fairly easy. Both DP and I have been doing it and it seems to suit us. We occasionally have treats or don't quite follow it to the letter but generally speaking we're on form most weeks.

I'm getting horrible stomach bloating and / or cramps when I do have a treat or add something back in to my diet that I've not had for a while.

I have self diagnosed (still not 100% sure) that I have an intolerance to bananas, something I've always eaten but on this diet, they give me awful bloating and it's like they sit on my chest just under the my diaphragm so my smoothies are now crap as I can't have banana

Tonight, I've treated myself to vodka and coke with my chicken salad and it's the same kind of reaction to the bananas. I look 3 months pregnant, I've bloated that much. I feel really bloaty and in pain with it too. These are just two examples.

I had this on holiday 3 weeks ago and assumed it was the bananas, but now I'm worried that this is something more serious - could it be IBS?

Help, I feel really shitty and don't know what's causing this.

I was like this when I had started low carb, I had a burger inna bun about three months in and the next day was spent in pain and on the loo. Blush But over time it got better and now I can tolerate the occasional carby day without any issues. Look up metabolic flexibility, that's where your body can freely switch between using fat and using carbs. In my case I suspect there was some metabolic derangement in leptin levels, insulin levels etc. A few months on a low carb primal diet were enough to get my body working the way it should be.

Stuntnun thank you for replying. I went to bed early last night I was so uncomfortable. I will look that up. It's like any crap I have, it bloats me.

I ended up making myself sick last night I felt that bad. I did this in holiday the other week and it is definitely not a habit I want to get in to.

Read up on that Stunt, lost after 3 sentences!! It's so confusing Blush

I've had a little bread today with breakfast and was fine, so it's certain foods.

Bump for anyone else who might know what's going on

It is possible to develop banana intolerance my son was addicted to bananas and it seemed to cause eczema on his face. This discussion suggests it can be part of latex sensitivity paleohacks.com/bananas/has-anyone-experienced-sudden-banana-intolerance-7374

But let's face it coke is shit (and vodka depresses dh immediately) and so are burgers, the wheat is a known problem for most people (see a book called Wheat Belly by William Davis M.D.). Your bodies are reacting to them especially because you haven't had crap food for a while!! Some people are not good with bananas. We're not all the same.
